The fifteenth fostering memoir by Cathy Glass.Danny was petrified and clung to me in desperation as I carried him to my car. Trapped in his own dark world, he couldn't understand why his parents no longer loved or wanted him, and were sending him away.

While Danny’s parents have everything they could wish for in material terms, they are unable to care for their only child. This is where Cathy comes in. On a cold dark evening Danny finds a place in her home where he can be himself; away from his parents’ impatience and frustration. Often in his own little world, six-year-old Danny finds it difficult to communicate, finding solace in his best friend and confidant George – his rabbit.Cathy quickly becomes aware of his obsessively meticulous behaviour in addition to his love of patterns, he sees them everywhere and creates them at any opportunity – in his play and also with his food. She realises that patience is the key to looking after Danny as well as her well-tried strategies for managing children’s behaviour. With his father refusing to cooperate, it becomes increasingly likely that Danny will be living with Cathy permanently until she gets an opportunity to speak her piece.

This book is the "Hello, World" tutorial for building products, technologies, and teams in a startup environment. It's based on the experiences of the author, Yevgeniy (Jim) Brikman, as well as interviews with programmers from some of the most successful startups of the last decade, including Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, GitHub, Stripe, Instagram, AdMob, Pinterest, and many others.

Hello, Startup is a practical, how-to guide that consists of three parts: Products, Technologies, and Teams. Although at its core, this is a book for programmers, by programmers, only Part II (Technologies) is significantly technical, while the rest should be accessible to technical and non-technical audiences alike.

If you’re at all interested in startups—whether you’re a programmer at the beginning of your career, a seasoned developer bored with large company politics, or a manager looking to motivate your engineers—this book is for you.

Hello, Startup: A Programmer's Guide to Building Products, Technologies, and Teams, by Yevgeniy Brikman

Review "I wish I'd had a book like this when I was getting my start in the industry." - Jay Kreps, CEO, Confluent Inc "Jim will give you a guided and well-informed look at what it takes to build a software startup. There is no jargon or fluff--just practical, simple, and proven advice, presented in an easily readable book." - Eugene Mirkin, Entrepreneur in Residence, Array Ventures

From the Author I wish I had a book like Hello, Startup back when I was in college. By the time I graduated, I had a BS, a Masters, a bunch of internship experiences--and absolutely no idea what I was doing. What technologies should I learn and use? How do I build a user interface that doesn't look terrible? How do I negotiate a job offer? Should I negotiate for more salary or more equity? What is equity, anyway? Should I work at a large company or join a startup? I learned the answers to these questions, and many others, the hard way--through trial and error. I also learned that thousands of other developers before me went through the same inefficient trial and error process. It doesn't have to be this way. While there are a small number of lessons that you can only learn by making your own mistakes, my hope is that you can learn everything else by studying the successes, failures, and stories in Hello, Startup.

About the Author

Yevgeniy (Jim) Brikman loves programming, writing, speaking, traveling, and lifting heavy things. He does not love talking about himself in the 3rd person. He is the co-founder of Gruntwork, a company that helps startups get up and running on AWS with DevOps best practices and world-class infrastructure. He's also the author of "Hello, Startup: A Programmer's Guide to Building Products, Technologies, and Teams," a book published by O'Reilly Media that has a 4.9/5.0 rating on Amazon and 4.5/5.0 rating on GoodReads. Previously, he worked as a software engineer at LinkedIn, TripAdvisor, Cisco Systems, and Thomson Financial and got his BS and Masters at Cornell University. For more info, check out ybrikman.com.

An Outstanding Way to Access Silicon Valley's Best Practices By Joshua Padnick Disclosure: I work with Jim Brikman in a DevOps consulting business, however long before I'd ever met Jim, I independently read an early access release, and later the full book after it was published. This book is an incredible resource. I was drawn to it because I've worked in tech for my entire career but never in Silicon Valley. I wanted to know the lessons learned in those companies so I could apply them to my own endeavors.Although the book appears to be targeted only at someone starting a startup, it's really more of a "Silicon Valley best practices" guide to all aspects of building software: conceiving of it, designing it, coding it, and building a team around it all.My favorite parts were on coding it, and building a team around it. On the coding side, Jim does an outstanding job of providing a bird's eye view of technology decisions: which language to choose, what framework, etc. For non-technical readers, this is written in such a way that it assumes limited pre-existing knowledge and yet dives very deep. I think it'd be especially valuable for those who manage software engineers but who may not know the key technical concepts in depth themselves.I've been a software engineer for over a decade, and the coding part of the book was also extremely valuable for me. Sure, I knew some of the material or basics already, but it was instructive to read a comprehensive bird's eye view and absorb best practices. For example, since reading this book, I now write my git comments in a more thoughtful way, I have a more intuitive understanding of the functional programming paradigm, and I feel I have a richer perspective on the different languages and frameworks. On the team-buildings side -- "Part III. Teams" in the book -- this was fascinating and illuminating. Getting an insight into how major tech companies run their cultures and their day-to-day was awesome. For example, Jim goes in depth on the subject of open floor plan vs. private offices, and talks about pro's/con's, and how all the different tech companies approach this.I think this issue sums up a lot of how to use this book. You're probably not interested in the open floor plan vs. private offices debate at all until you actually have to deal with it. But then you want rich, detailed information. This book gives you that kind of deep analysis across the entire breadth of "how to build a product."If I were to give a criticism of the book, I would say that perhaps the book doesn't clarify enough how it should be read. As I just said, I think this book is best as a reference on key areas you have an interest in. I tend to read books cover-to-cover by default, and there is so much good content here that it is perhaps daunting to undertake this book in that way.Overall, this is an outstanding work. It is a wealth of knowledge that is usually straightforward to understand but hard to acquire. Thanks for writing this, Jim. I learned a huge amount.

Brikman's writing is more like a novel than a tutorial; this makes the book easily digestible.Hello, Startup begins by explaining non-technical aspects like why you might want to work at a startup. He gave a lot of clear insights into the startup industry using examples from his personal knowledge at LinkedIn, along with many links and resources. The second part of the book is technical aspects of a startup. This is where the book really shined for me. For example, his discussion of choosing a technology stack was highly informative. What the book points out is that you are not just choosing a programming language, you are also picking a community of other developers. There were relevant details about how the tech stack choice depends on your employee's skill set. After the coding examples, which were really useful, he gives some more business minded tips. One section was how to make an offer to a potential employee that they will not be able to refuse... he does this by breaking down equity calculations. Brikman gives formulas for how to calculate equity and compare this to an offer that is purely salary. The formulas were well articulated and I learned a lot about evaluating an offer as well as extending an offer.I doubt there is a more complete book on startups out there. The technologies discussed here are still cutting edge, so everything is relevant. I would recommend this book to non-programmers as well... I think it is good that they see how many aspects you need to cover for a technical startup.A minor critique is that the author relied on his LinkedIn experiences quite a lot, as many chapters make reference to this. I cannot fault Brikman too much for this though as many of the examples were relevant and he worked there when LinkedIn still a private startup.

Vincent If you're thinking of entering the tech industry, you need to read this (along with a book like "Cracking the Coding Interview" or "Programming Interviews Exposed"), as it'll change your perspective on where you want to work and how to think about your career. If you're in the industry and not already at a top-tier tech company (FB, Google) you should also read it: it could help you land the next job or (possibly even better) help you improve the company you're already at.

How much of what exceptional people achieve can be put down to their own efforts and inner drive, and how much to fate? In this groundbreaking study, the authors argue that the extraordinary achievements of key figures in Irish history were indeed unstoppable - a product of their character and unique way of interacting with the world. In a series of fascinating character studies, Antoinette Walker and Michael Fitzgerald argue that many of those who were crucial to the development of Ireland's political, scientific and artistic traditions - the revolutionaries Robert Emmet, Pádraig Pearse and Éamon de Valera; the scientist Robert Boyle, mathematician William Rowan Hamilton and ethnographer Daisy Bates; and the poet W. B. Yeats and writers James Joyce and Samuel Beckett - would, if they were alive today, be diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. The authors examine the character quirks that lead them to believe that all nine can be seen as 'Asperger geniuses'. They assert that this condition meant that all nine were virtually predestined to become exceptional figures in their chosen field and that, moreover, Asperger's syndrome can be seen as the key to genius in all ages and all cultures.

By Amazon Customer As an artist (recently diagnosed with) who has experienced personally the profound, benign and challenging effects of Asperger's I found the book a page-turner, fascinating, gripping and enlightening.. I have no doubt from my personal experience that almost all the suggestions within are true. It is a strange and still-mysterious 'condition' which should be better understood and this book contributes considerably to that understanding, both for those with the condition and those attempting to understand them..As someone with the condition I found it particularly helpful and recommend it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. sweet, lighthearted, and touching By Shauna N Hann This book is a series of stories by bunnies who are waiting for a forever home, it is touching and just really good. I got the Kindle version and found this book to be heartwarming and easy to read because the prose is very clear and engaging. It draws you in as the author does a great job of giving the bunnies an innocent voice that the reader really cares about. Their voices stay in your heart. The prose is beautiful. The tone is touching. The message is heartfelt. I highly recommend it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a Wonderful, Bunderful Book! By Judy The first time I read Tales from Hunter Hollow, I read it straight through. I laughed out loud, cried and had to wipe my eyes to see the print. Then, I re-read it and savored all the precious bunny personalities within - Frick and Frack, the sisterly bookbuns, Gruff Perry, adventure-seeking Cauliflower, Daisy, the romantic. Annie-Laurie Hunter leads a privileged life, caring for huge bunny souls in tiny, sometimes damaged, bodies. In addition to being a home inspector, bunny rescuer and tireless nurturer, Hunter can add another well-deserved title: accomplished story-teller. Tales from Hunter Hollow is a joy to read, despite some harsh realities. Lovingly crafted, the book will delight young and old alike. Although I bought it for my Kindle, I am going to buy the paperback as well, and shelve it right next to my worn out copy of "Watership Down". I know it will become equally worn over time. A wonderful, bunderful book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tales From Hunter Hollow is an absolute joy to read By T. Crawford Tales From Hunter Hollow is an absolute joy to read! I sat down with the paperback one evening and read from cover to cover!! The book is written by Annie-Laurie Hunter, a Bunny Foster Mom, who knows the language of Bunnies. She tells the tales with the help of several big-hearted and courageous rabbits. The stories are interwoven, and lovingly crafted to show some of the joys and sorrows of being a bunny. The stories have both wisdom and humor, joy and heartbreak, and there are lessons about life that the rabbits--the real heroes of the book--give to all of us, readers of all ages. I look very much forward to further tales from Hunter Hollow, and more of Annie-Laurie Hunter's loving portrayal of what it means to be a bunny. 10 Stars!!!!

This script is for a one-act stage play. It is set in and inspired by the infamous Voltaire's Basement, a downtown branch of the central Texas chain of used bookstores run by John and Marquetta Tilton. In this fictional story, three women try to earn a living by running a used bookstore in a seedy part of downtown Austin, Texas. The owner, Joy, is in her late 50s; Elle is a writer in her late 40s; Nina is an innocent 16-year-old. Their loose business practices and the location next door to a homeless shelter prevent the store from reaching its maximum potential. The Mamet-styled portrayal is stark and filled with innuendo.

Satire in the Theatre By Chuck Taylor One sometimes has the feeling that theatre is dead in the United States, especially if one looks to Broadway in New York City, which focuses these days on inane musicals and spin offs from animated cartoons, like the Lion King. But heartfelt and exploratory theater, meaningful theatre, continues regionally across the United States. "Beasts and Saints" is an example of such regional theatre from Texas. The setting is a bookstore operated by a cast of Bohemians who haven't the faintest idea on how to turn a buck in the business. Bohemians are not heroic figures in this play, but objects of satire and, at times, sadness. Gorski has the amazing ability to make these Quixote idealists come alive on stage and does a great job of portraying both their beast and saint sides. A lovely read, and based upon an actual bookstore that operated in downtown Austin.

There is a lot of implication here that is dramatic in the dialogue creating much tension, which is something I like. Also, all the main characters are women, and this is unusual, too, especially for satire or settings like this one, a used bookstore in a seedy part of town. I enjoyed reading this and it was easy to understand. I'm not sure what sorts of controversy arose around this play, something mentioned in the introduction, but I can see where this play on stage might not be everyone's favorite cup of tea. I highly recommend it, nonetheless.

"Life's Questions": The Poetic Works of Sanjay A. Caines, by Mr Sanjay Alonzo Caines

Review These poems are a decent collection of thoughts and messages that straddle a number of relevant themes and appeal to the various emotions of the reader. I recommend the anthology as fit for meditation, introspection, adulation and relaxation. Michael S. Blake (Educator)

From the Author This book is one with a purpose. In today's world many are confused because they are pressed by the powers that be to move along a particular part to achieve success. Higher education is one example. Some persons spend their entire productive life chasing education only to realize they have not fulfilled their God ordained purpose on earth which is sometimes as simple as using the talents He gave us. My own life is an example. I am now more concerned about what God require of me than my own ambitions SIMPLY BECAUSE GOD HAS MADE AND EQUIPPED US ALL FOR SUCCESS. We must allow world accepted views to alter the original good success that God intended. THIS ONLY FRUSTRATES YOU BY COMPARING YOURSELF WITH THE MILLIONS, MANY HOUSES AND CARS ILLUSION OF SUCCESS. This book of poems would help you to zero in on what is the true definition of success in your own life by asking the right questions. Leaders of any type of institution and motivational speakers will need to have this book in their chest of inspirational books. It will overtime stand out from the rest as the Spirit of God being present with this work will lead you and others to God's good success.

About the Author Sanjay Caines is a Computer Technician and businessman with very humble beginnings. Born on December 20th, 1980 to father Michael Caines, a locally popular mechanic/businessman, and Mother Phyllis Brookes, an office clerk, he was raised in an area of Basseterre called Mac Knight on the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts. Sanjay's Primary Education started at George Moody Stuart School (Factory School). It was certainly the most prestigious private school at the time. His being there was made possible by his father's business, and it was just a stone's throw away from the sugar factory that was at the centre of the island economy then. At an early age, Sanjay showed signs of a God-given writing talent by composing songs for a church group called 'Holy Vessels' while he attended the Basseterre Church of God.

The book calls for deep self introspection and solitude. It addresses themes such as religion and spirituality, love, slavery, culture, man in his environment, and society. The book is a reflection of the author's personal growth and development. The questions that he asked along the way mirror the questions that anyone would ask during their search for self. The author's writing is bare of complexities. It is simple and honest- the kind of language required when addressing Life's Questions. The book's artwork also features the author's homeland and culture which blends well with the book's content. Life's Questions is thought provoking and is a valuable addition to anyone's book collection.

“Am I the only one?” That question sent Lee Warren on a pilgrimage in which he visited thirty coffee shops in Omaha, Nebraska. This collection of heartfelt insights about love, loss, loneliness, and the deep need for connection is the result. He ended up spending $136.42 on coffee and a few donuts, but it was a small price to pay for the commonality he felt between the patrons, baristas, and himself. And standing on common ground gave him strength in the most unexpected of ways. Maybe it will do the same for you.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Hooked from page one...and still smiling. By Jeanie J. In Lee Warren's book, Common Grounds, he hooked me with these questions:"Am I the only large, shy person who tries to blend in wherever he goes?"and"Am I the only one who just needs to be around people sometimes, even if we don't have a conversation?"His "pilgrimage of observation" mixes a skillful blend of wit and honesty that runs the gamut from thought provoking to humorous. As I read the book I heard the background music, smelled the fresh cappuccino, and gained new insight through his eyes. From the hilarious "rabbishgrobber" child at Dunkin' Donuts to the achingly tender memory of a friend's lost battle with cancer, the author weaves warm-hearted vignettes, sans saccharine.Don't expect dry, dull essays. The chapters are poignant glimpses into the author's heart, similar to reading a friend's diary over his shoulder. After reading this book I wanted to sling my arm around the author's shoulder and buy him his trademark Skinny Vanilla Latte.I recommend this book for people watchers and especially for those seeking connections. If you see life's coffee cup as half empty, Common Grounds provides an unlimited refill. As the author says, "We're all peculiar, walking contradictions. And that's a beautiful thing."

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. You'll Never Look at Your Coffee Stop the Same! By Delores Liesner This book was a perfect fit for a life-long people watcher. I've often wondered, as Lee Warren does, of the rest of the story behind the characters that walk through our lives. I very much enjoyed the sneak peeks of his observations during each coffee stop and to be the 'mouse in the corner' knowing what that guy in the corner is really writing on his laptop! Besides a mini-trip into the world of a free-lance writer and the world of coffee, I found his unexpected connections, adventures and useful knowledge especially enjoyable because of Lee's vulnerability and his quirky sense of humor.Quick reads for your next coffee stop that will make you take a second look at the world around you.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Am I the Only One? By Stanley H. Hall From the first pages, this book starts to answer the question that many of us have asked, am I the only one? Each of us has a story and Lee has found a way to learn some of these stories while visiting coffee shops and observing the employees and other customers. He uses his talent as a writer and his honesty and courage to relate these observations to challenges in his own life. I share many of the challenges that Lee describes and this book has caused me to realize that I am also not alone when it comes to handling the situations faced each day. I highly recommend this book and hope you will have similar realizations concerning your own life.

Sapiens This book is well laid out and useful to both a beginner a player who's been at it a bit. It is clearly written using language that is easy to read and will not be a problem for good readers 10+. It explains everything from the purpose/goal of Minecraft to details (hunger management - nutritional guide) to tips and tricks starting from Day 1 through the end and beyond with each chapter ending with a succinct Bottom Line to bring it all together.Pros:Starts at beginning - explaining the platform differencesGood Day 1 information - including when to respawnClearly written with purposeful graphicsBook is fairly compact and all language purposeful - keeps it from being overwhelmingGood use of bullet pointsTips in orange boxes & Notes in purple to grab your eye and make them easy to findCaution boxes in blue to share critical warnings/remindersI now know what the heck my kids have been talking about the last several yearsIndex and ContentsEach Chapter starts with a bullet list of what will be coveredEach page - chapter # and title on Left but... on right... what is being covered on these pages - brilliantCons:Not much focus on multiplayer - but this is not the purpose of this book, look elsewhere if you are into mods and multiplayer worlds. There is an advanced version of this book that my daughter (11) who just finished Java for Minecraft would recommend instead. So, determine where your needs are and get the right book.Bottom line: This is a really good *starter* manual - what is Minecraft? Why Minecraft? What is the purpose? How the heck to get there. It is well laid out, extremely visually appealing, and explains how to begin playing and jump in there without it being daunting. Highly Recommended.

By Jerry Saperstein The first edition of this book helped me learn Minecraft well enough to keep up with my grandson . . . for a little while, at least. He moved through his Minecraft phase and on to online First Person Shooters all too fast. So now Minecraft in Creative mode is where I spend my time and that, incidentally, is my only criticism of this otherwise excellent guide: it is focused primarily on Survival mode, which I don’t find to be fun. But kids love the kill-or-be-killed aspect of Survival mode and kids are who this book is written for. Fortunately nearly all the information is applicable to all Minecraft modes. (By the way, you can set the mayhem to low in Survival mode, but I just don’t care for the competitive aspect. I’d rather spend all my time creating new worlds.) The Third Edition is about 40 pages longer than the First Edition and covers the progressive additions and changes to the Minecraft program itself. The key question: can you learn Minecraft well from this single book? Yes. Part of that is due to the brilliant design of Minecraft. But this is a well-written, amply illustrated, step-by-step guide to Minecraft and it does the job well. Read the text, study the illustrations, keep Minecraft running on your computer and you’ll learn how to play the game. You can also supplement this with online tips and recipes at the author’s website. In addition, if more is needed, there are tons of tutorials on the web.` Overall, while I don’t think the “Ultimate” label in the title is entirely justified, this is certainly among the best of the Minecraft playing guides.Jerry

Simple and Comprehensive but Not as Good as the For Dummies Version By Kyle Slayzar Minecraft, to anyone not familiar with the franchise, is a simple yet increasingly sophisticated building game that has been equated to Legos for adults. Players of all ages can learn and hone several skills including architecture, engineering, resource management, and broaden their overall creativity. However, while the game is easy to pick up, it can be difficult to master, especially the red stone mechanics that gives Minecraft more challenge. There are a LOT of guides out there that claim to help assist the reader with learning the ins and outs of Minecraft. I was particularly impressed with the Minecraft Guide for Dummies as it not only broke down the game perfectly for anyone to understand but also had a "For Parents" section that explained how Minecraft can be a great learning tool (albeit much more articulate than I). The Ultimate Player's Guide to Minecraft is a great reference guide as it breaks down everything into comprehensive chapters for anyone above a 3rd grade level to read including red stone mechanics. The chapters are organized and the language easy to understand. However, I felt as though the Dummies version gives a more conversational, yet informative, approach that everyone, including parents, can appreciate. This isn't to say The Ultimate version is no good, far from it as it sits quite proudly next to my Dummies version on my shelf, but I would rather recommend the For Dummies version instead.Still a great read, but I'd recommend Minecraft For Dummies first.

Like most draft guides, they've got you covered for daily, redraft, keeper, dynasty and auction leagues. That's not where they separate from the rest of the pack. PFF provides the stat and numbers that help you uncover trends that will lead you in the right direction on who to target and avoid in your fantasy drafts. I'm talking everything you need to know about every running back's offensive line, how a running back operates independent of his line, offensive coaching tendencies/philosophies/personnel packages---and really that is just the tip of the ice burg. All of these things may sound like information that will help you become a more knowledgeable real football fan, and while that is true, they will also provide you with the small edge needed to make the right decisions on draft day.

Contains a lot of extremely useful and interesting data. And there is so much information that I keep finding new things to read and study in the book. I also found their recommendations a good read even though I didn't agree with many of them.

Goldfarb makes Dante's platonic love sensible—his use of the Muse indispensable. If "Muse" is in both "amuse" and "museum," the work passes muster with both. The reader, not necessarily the Muse, ends up falling in love with this poet—with his gentle nature, his genteel old-fashioned wrestling with desire & insistence on feelings having presence & body—without flesh. Goldfarb makes the reader into a poetry-sensitive nymphette. —Andrei Codrescu, author of So Recently Rent a World: New and Selected Poems I Goldfarb celebrates an idealization of chaste love in K: A 21st Century Canzoniere, a sonnet storybook set on a contemporary campus where a beautiful student inspires an aging professor to fathom their relationship through devotional lyric. Written at the intersection between metaphysical spirit and psychological soul, K: A 21st Century Canzoniere tenderly lays on the line Goldfarb’s life-changing encounter with a student marvel radiant enough to morph into his Muse and as such to inspire 590 songs. Goldfarb’s model is, of course, The Canzoniere of the Italian poet Petrarch, who in the church of Saint Clare saw and fell in love with the young woman whom he called Laura. From Petrarch comes the lesson that a young woman’s image is the means for the poet to cultivate a transcendent perspective on his life and personality. —Ken Warren, Author of Captain Poetry’s Sucker Punch K: A 21st Century Canzoniere presents a future for poetry while embracing its historical arrangements. The specificity and attention of the language provides us a collection of contemporary sonnets through a music which is neither clichéd nor portentous. Goldfarb silhouettes his chosen form with precision and sparkle, and accentuates the poetic dynamics through which the sonnet can further display the depths of possibility and imagination. This is a book of rare intensity. — Geoffrey Gatza, author of APOLLO The Canzoniere of I Goldfarb is inspired. From the outset, with this title, it stakes its claim to the continuity of the Petrarchan tradition. It is inscribed in the rivalry of poets. The sonnet does not hide this. The held breath at the two modes of appearance of the beloved, her perception in beauty and her "image" in absence, scarcely is it "at an end" at the conclusion of a sonnet or sestina than it catches its breath, takes off again in poetry, both enslaved and free, grateful and inventive, dependent and emancipated, debt-ridden and prodigal, 590 times; an exploit, a resource, a pace both regular and surprising: the surprise is handled in the "conventional" form, the first all the more powerful as the second is more "classical." I admire in I Goldfarb this copiousness of density, this fecundity of the sonnet form, invented eight centuries ago, and still giving of itself. — Michel Deguy, prominent French poet

When does erotic intensity seek out and embrace chastity and abstinence as its highest form of fulfillment? Imagine being consumed by a love that will never known consummation and that ultimately will find its bliss in the evocation of its loss. This is what you will find in the beautiful and haunting book "A 21st Century Canzoniere" by I. Goldfarb. It contains 590 sonnets written in a style that Petrarch, Guido Cavalcanti, and the troubadours would have felt instantly at home with. Yet it is very much a 21st century book due to its scope, its literary allusions (Baudelaire, Proust), its artistic and cinematic references (Cleo de 5 a 7, Gustave Courbet), all combined with a touch of Jewish mysticismGoldfarb's "Canzoniere" is nothing less than the daily diary, written in strict sonnet form, of a tortured soul in search of its "anima". It could be said more simply: it's a poetic saga of an older man's love for a much younger woman. It's an attempt to find a language that will correspond to the ecstastic search of the lover for the beloved. In the end it becomes a homage to a pure state of immaterial love detached from the object that brought it into being.Goldfarb expresses it better: "To see you is to be/caressed by the ineffable/to possess in my soul/what possesses us all".Reading this book will help you to realize that absence and presence are one, and that the absence of the loved can lead, in love, to an even higher, more exalted state of being. The goal of desire is joy and that joy finds its highest and best expression in the possession of that which can never be possessed. To quote Goldfarb again: "God gave me for my pardon/the greatest love of all/to love a lovely woman/as if a little girl/without possession's passion/or bodily desire".Easier said than done, however, as Goldfarb goes on to say: "However chaste the love I feel/I love a soul enfleshed and real".This is the dynamic tension that informs his book and creates an erotic suspense. "The perfect love is not to touch/the body that I love so much/but lie instead within your soul/where mind and body make a whole".If you wish to know the outcome of this spiritual struggle, you will have to buy the book.

Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (Annotated), by Herman Melville

From Library Journal After publishing five novels, some of which flourished and others that floundered, Melville turned his pen to poetry. Melville based his Civil War poems on firsthand experience, and rather than glorify battle, he depicts the horrors and the waste of it.Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Cox I am one of the editors of the Prometheus Books edition of Melville's superb book on the Civil War. Alas, the Library Journal review, posted for the volume, is pathetic: two sentences, only one on Melville's poems, and that one half wrong, for Melville had NO direct experience of actual fighting in the war. What is more, there is no reference to the extensive supplementary material in our volume--including fine essays by Helen Vendler and Rosanna Warren. Caveat emptor regarding any such "review" of the "critics."

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Herman Melville's Civil War Poetry By Robin Friedman Melville's "Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War" (1867) intersects two of my great interests: the Civil War and American literature. This collection of poetry has never been well-known and critical opinion about it has always been varied and mostly lukewarm. But I have returned to it many times for its meditiative quality, for Melville's varied and conflicted insights about the Civil War, and for the tortuous quality of its poetry. This collection includes the full text of Melville's poems, including his notes to the poems and the prose essay, titled "Supplement", with which the book concludes. I find the book invaluable and eloquent in understanding the Civil War, contemporary reactions to it, and Melville himself. In his short introduction, Melville tells the reader that the poems were almost entirely composed following the conclusion of the War. They were composed at different times and with no thought of unity in the collection. Thus they are not an epic or informed by a single theme (although the unfinished dome of the Capitol runst through them as a metaphor) but rather present a series of separate, disjointed thoughts on the war. Most of the descriptions in the book derive from journalistic reports, although Melville had more first-hand experience with the Civil War than is sometimes realized. The major part of the collection, "Battle-Pieces" begins with John Brown's raid and ends with a poem title "America" in which Melville ponders the changes the Civil War had already wrought, and would bring about in the future in the United States. As a student of the Civil War, I find it valuable to read this book for Melville's depictions of conflicts, including Fort Donelson, Shiloh, the clash between the Monitor and the Virginia, Stones River, Antietam, Vicksburg, the Wilderness, Appomatox, and much else. He gives some details of the battles while reflecting on the courage of the soldiers, the terrible carnage of the War, the scourge of slavery that brought it about, and the uncertain and ambiguous future of the United States upon the War's conclusion. Melville realized that the War did not lead to clear conclusions or to false optimism. His poetry reflects the difficulty of a complex mind thinking about a terrible war. For this reason, the book has seemed pallid to some readers. But its lack of force is due to the depth of the struggle in Melville's mind to understand the conflict. The book is written in verse with meters and rhymes that frequently are awkward. Here again, some readers take this as a sign that poetry was not a congenial form to a Melville burned-out from the effort of writing his novels. But for much of the verse, the awkwardness of the poetry reflects the difficulty of the War as Melville works to understand the conflict and to present differing perspectives. Some of the selections, including "The Portent", "Shiloh","Rebel Colorbearers at Shiloh", the two poems about Stonewall Jackson, "Formerly a Slave", "On the Slain Collegians", and "America" seem to me to work as poetry. Other individual poems are, perhaps, more valuable for what they try to say than for Melville's poetical skills in saying it. On the whole, I think the quality of these jagged works is high. When read with Mellville's notes, they have a quality of trying to communicate directly with the reader. Most of the successful poems in this collection are short, but I found some of the longer ones, such as "Donelson," "The Amries of the Wilderness" and "Lee in the Capitol" cast important light upon their subjects. It is interesting that in much of the poetry and in the "Supplement" with which the book concludes, Melville took a reconciliatisnt view of the conflict and its aftermath. Brave committed Americans fought on both sides, Melville tells the reader, although one side had right with it, and he urged Americans and their leaders to put aside their differences and work towards reuniting the Nation. This view has come under deserved scrutiny in recent years, as many have questioned whether it did justice to the needs of freed African Americans. But it is valuable to be reminded of how contemporaries saw the issue, as reflected in the words of some highly complex and thoughtful minds.Although Melville's Civil War poetry will never win widespread critical or popular appeal, I have gained a great deal from repeated readings of this work. Students of the Civil War and of American literature can only benefit from knowing and reflecting upon it.Robin Friedman

12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Poetic Prose, but not Prosaic Verse By A Customer It has been said of Herman Melville that his prose is poetic, but his poetry is not. In his time, in fact, his poetry was little-read and quite unpopular. Of course, _Moby Dick_ received only a lukewarm reception back then. Now, his poetry deserves a reassessment.First, _Battle-Pieces_ should be credited as artistic, sometimes beautiful, poetry. Some of the poems are somewhat doggeral, and would be much improved by a few less forced rhymes. Others, however, are truly moving. In these latter poems, Melville conveys the horrors of the war--and occasionally the humanity that shone through, uniting the brothers across the battlefield. Few men or women of the time had the experience (he participated in a chase of a Southern soldier) and writing ability to show us this time so effectively. As a result, he produced what, in my opinion, is a book at least as good as his most well-known novel. At the end of the book he includes an essay on Reconstruction, in which he pleads for an easy reconciliation with the conquered South, more along the lines with Lincoln and Johnson's plans than the Radicals'. While somewhat disappointing (we'd like the man who created QueeQueg to support Southern blacks' rights a little more), the essay is well-written, and allows us to read the nonfictional beliefs of a man we usually associate with fiction--just as the poems let us read the verse of a writer of prose.
