It’s not a question, it’s a declaration as he bares his soul with the blunt and unapologetic writings of a man struggling through his miseries and joys. There’s wit and humor on nearly every page of his latest, Random Thoughts of a Lunatic… Going Insane, and here’s an artist that shows no fear of interjecting the lowest of his desires in the middle of any heartfelt subject. A man doesn’t deserve respect just because he admits where his sun rises and sets but it’s easy to applaud him when in one sentence he’s offering apologies to all those he ever hurt in life and then ten seconds later he’s requesting a pair of Tyra’s panties. I can relate! A man has needs…Some of us judge how high we soar by how far we fall and that’s one of the strongest impressions I felt while reading this book. Never eloquent in the classical sense, but there’s a harmony in the desperation of his words. He confesses the shortcomings in his character and asks the unanswerable questions that all those with wounded souls ask while not making the mistake of letting his preaching’s and rants grow louder than his own single voice. That’s a quality to be respected, in my experience. If you ever need to be reminded or reassured that you’re not the only one struggling nearly every day without someone shaking a finger at you or telling you how to fix yourself, Mr. Guidry offers his random thoughts. I enjoyed reading them.

There were so many artists represented in the book. I remember so much of the 80s music and it was so interesting to read the back stories of the artists. It was fun to read about the artists and their music that was so present in my life at that time. My favorite chapter was the one on Jennifer Rush. Loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loved the music of the 80's. Time to look at the other books written by this author.

Bitcoin Basics: 101 Questions and Answers, by Eric Sammons

From the Author Bitcoin today is like email in the early 90's - and it has the potential to be as much a part of our life in the future as email is today. Since its origin in 2008, its popularity has exploded. Now economists, venture capitalists, financial executives, and even some politicians are embracing what a few years ago was a fringe interest of a handful of technical hobbyists. Nevertheless most "regular" people have no idea what Bitcoin is, even if they've heard of it. They might have some vague impressions - "Isn't that like Internet money?" or "Don't people buy drugs with that?" - but they don't really understand Bitcoin, or why anyone would be interested in using it, or how to use it themselves.  That is the purpose of this book. If you are one of those "regular" people who is interested in Bitcoin but doesn't know where to start, then Bitcoin Basics: 101 Questions and Answers will help you navigate this quickly developing technology.  Perhaps you're already familiar with Bitcoin. If you bring up Bitcoin to a friend, and he gives you a quizzical look, hand him this book. If you mention Bitcoin at your family Thanksgiving dinner, and your cousin says, "I don't really understand that," send her a copy of this book.  Although Bitcoin Basics: 101 Questions and Answers explains the technical and economic ideas behind Bitcoin, it is intended for the non-technician, the non-economist. Anyone who knows how to use email and how to pay for something online with a credit card can read this book profitably. Some parts of the book cover the more practical aspects of Bitcoin - how to spend and receive it, how to store it, etc. - and other parts explain the reasons behind the creation of Bitcoin and the problems it is intended to solve. You only need to know the former to use Bitcoin, but knowing the latter can give you a leg up in becoming knowledgeable about this new and exciting phenomenon.  No one knows the future of Bitcoin, but it has the potential to do for money what the Internet has done for communications. And if this happens, everyone will need to understand at least the basics of Bitcoin. This little book will help you do that. The table of contents gives a general layout of the topics covered:

  • Bitcoin Basics
  • Bitcoin as a Payment Network
  • Bitcoin as Currency
  • Ownership of Bitcoin Network
  • Technological Advantages of Bitcoin
  • Economic Advantages of Bitcoin
  • Using Bitcoin
  • Cost of Using Bitcoin
  • Bitcoin Mining
  • Anonymity of Using Bitcoin
  • Security of Bitcoin
  • Value of Bitcoin
  • Objections to Bitcoin
  • The Future of Bitcoin
  • It is my hope that Bitcoin Basics: 101 Questions and Answers will make the sometimes-confusing subject of Bitcoin more accessible to everyone.

From the Back Cover What is Bitcoin and why should I care?  Bitcoin has thrust itself into the marketplace - and the national consciousness. One day in the not-too-distant future we may view this digital currency and payment network as revolutionary. Just as the Internet profoundly impacted the everyday lives of people the world over, Bitcoin has the potential to change the way we think about money, economics, communication, and data. Perhaps, like most people, you're not even sure what exactly Bitcoin is - let alone how or why to use it. Bitcoin Basics answers all your questions. After reading it you'll be ready - and excited - to begin your own Bitcoin adventure.  You don't have to be an expert to use Bitcoin, but after reading this book you'll be on your way to becoming one!

About the Author Eric Sammons is the author of several books and holds a degree in Systems Analysis with a concentration in Economics from Miami University in Ohio. He worked for more than 15 years in the software development field, including 10 years as the owner of his own software firm.

The Perfect Introduction to Bitcoin By Devin Rose I had followed the news headlines about Bitcoin over the past several years, but only knew a little about it. I generally didn't trust it based on the Mt. Gox exchange fraud stories I had read, plus the volatility of the currency.Yet I've been intrigued by it, and this book explained with the perfect level of depth what Bitcoin is, how it works, and why people should be interested in it.Sammons breaks down Bitcoin into simple questions and answers. Each answer is short and to the point. This is Bitcoin 101, accessible to everyone, a handy primer on the crypto-currency.I was disappointed to learn from the book that "mining" bitcoins is now out of the reach of most people, as that sounded like a cool way to make money. But it is still possible if you are motivated enough and get some special hardware.More and more businesses are accepting bitcoins as payment, though from what I saw the number is still relatively small. That said, the book made me think about Bitcoin as an investment. This technology is quite promising: decentralized, electronic, and with the potential to connect people across the globe and avoid big banks and financial institutions.Sammons has written a very helpful guide: succinct and informative. Highly recommended.

Seibert This has the qualities one seeks in a short introductory book. It is well-written, easy to read, and balanced. It tells the average reader what needs to be known about Bitcoin without wading into too much detail.Eric Sammons asked me to review this title on the strength of my review of The Age of Cryptocurrency . Both are excellent books, intended for different readerships. This book tells the reader how Bitcoin works and what makes it radically different from government-issued currencies. Without belaboring the point, Sammons outlines the shortcomings of government-issued fiat currencies. The chief one is this. They are issued via a political process, and they invariably succumb to political pressures to inflate. In time, they all fail. Every one. See This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly for an historical account, and The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve for a description of why.The problems with government are peripheral to the main thrust of the book. Bitcoin serves two of thee three major purposes of money: a means of exchange and a store of wealth. It could serve as the third, a unit of account, but the governments who demand financial accounting don't want to be reading profit-and-loss statements denominated in Bitcoins.Bitcoin is useful as a store of wealth only for those with strong stomachs. The value of a Bitcoin has soared from 1/5000 of a PapaJohn pizza (the first transaction) to over $1000, and fallen back to around $200. Governments, which depend on printing money in order to have something to spend without raising taxes, are not keen on the emergence of competitive currencies. Moreover, Bitcoin's anonymity is at odds with their objective of making all transactions visible, and hence easily taxed. There is strong evidence that government entities are suppressing the value of Bitcoin just as vigorously as they are that of another competitor, precious metals. Some try, with varying levels of success, to make Bitcoin illegal, expensive or difficult to use.Sammons tells the reader why Bitcoin can be trusted for financial transactions, at least as much as government-issued currencies processed by credit card issuers and banks. He goes into the convenience factor – or lack thereof. A person comfortable with computers can get started cheaply and easily. Others, who are more comfortable offloading the bits and bytes to somebody else, can find those who wil make it easy. Again there is a trade-off. Most of the rip-offs in the Bitcoin sphere have been by such go-betweens. There has not yet been a failure attributable to the architecture of Bitcoin itself.Bitcoin has several advantages. There is no need for a trusted third party such as a bank, credit card company or government. When a Bitcoin transaction completes, it is as thoroughly done as when you hand somebody a gold coin. The process is fast – measured in minutes – and cheap, measured in pennies. Bitcoin is absolutely international. There may be costs converting to and from national currencies, but there is no cost in sending Bitcoins overseas. The Internet does not recognize national boundaries.Sammons' description of the mechanics of the blockchain technology is clear enough and at an adequate depth for the average reader. See Age of Cryptocurrency for a more thorough description, and Nine Algorithms That Changed the Future: The Ingenious Ideas That Drive Today's Computers for a clear description of public key cryptography, the bit of technical genius that makes Internet privacy and secrecy possible. If there is one cloud on the horizon, it is that quantum computing could theoretically develop to the point of being able to break public key cryptography. That would affect all Internet encyrption, not just Bitcoin. For a discussion of the issues, Google " Bitcoin Is Not Quantum-Safe, And How We Can Fix It When Needed."Altogether a five-star effort. It expects a bit more of the reader than a "For Dummies" book, but is equally efficient in providing the reader with a clear understanding in a short period of time.

Get a Solid Understanding of Bitcoin By John Tarvardian If you're looking for a solid understanding of what Bitcoin is, how it works, and how you can use it for purchases then you should read this book. The technology Bitcoin uses and the abstract economic and monetary theories it's applied to are not simple concepts. However, the author has a talent for explaining such complexities in ways that are easy to understand and apply. This is a fast read and well worth it. In the end, you'll know how Bitcoin works and why. You'll see that in many ways it's a superior and far more secure monetary system than the one we currently use. More importantly, I think, is you'll be able to see that Bitcoin is a disruptive technology that will become as important and useful to us one day as email, another disruptive technology in its day, has since become.I highly recommend this book.

Bring up their name to any American or even ask about slapstick comedy, and invariably, certain images will come to mind, most of which came from the comedy shorts featuring three bumbling but likable fools getting into all sorts of trouble due to their inability to think or behave properly. Moe, Larry and Curly quickly became a hit in comedy shorts on screen, and even as other similar acts like Abbot & Costello went on to make full length films, the Stooges continued to star in shorts, producing the iconic scenes that everyone associates with them, from Larry asking what he did wrong to Moe trying to hit Curly and Curly’s efforts to block him. By the 1920s, English comic Stan Laurel had been in dozens of films and American Oliver Hardy had appeared in hundreds, but it was not until they formed a duo together in 1926 that they began to truly be noticed. Once they did, however, Laurel & Hardy became one of the most famous comedy teams in American history, with a career that spanned 4 decades and included over 100 combined shorts and feature films. Even today, nearly 60 years after their last performances together, Laurel & Hardy are still popular, alongside legends like The Three Stooges and Abbott & Costello, and their routines are still watched across the globe. Ironically, one of America’s most famous comedy duos, and the performers of the country’s most famous skit, came together in part because Lou Costello had already failed to cut it in the film industry. In fact, Costello had appeared in a Laurel & Hardy film in 1927 before meeting his partner, Bud Abbott, on the burlesque circuit in New York City. In fact, the two first performed together in 1935 only because Abbott filled in for Costello’s usual partner, who happened to be ill one fateful day. Over time, Abbott & Costello perfected their routine, which typically consisted of Abbott playing the straight man while his dimwit partner acted foolishly and interrupted his plans. It was a shtick that also did well on radio, albeit one that required Costello to modify his voice with a higher pitch that not only differentiated his from Abbott but also made him sound appropriately dumber. By 1940, they were not only successful on the radio but also among America’s most popular movie stars, a status they held almost consistently throughout the decade and into the early 1950s. Working as “Martin and Lewis”, the team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis became the most popular nightclub act in America, commanding huge fees for their appearances all across the country. Perhaps the most ironic aspect of their success is that Dean Martin was not a comedian in any real sense of the word, and even during their act, he essentially served as the straight man to Jerry Lewis. The routine ensured that critics took more notice of Jerry Lewis, who intentionally came across as an awkward figure with a brand of bodily humor that was borrowed from a lineage of Yiddish humor predicated on physical slapstick. And just as Martin benefited from Lewis’ comedic skills, Lewis also further developed a singing career thanks to the more famous Martin’s crooning. Though it's often forgotten now, the duo eventually broke up in the mid-1950s because Lewis was starting to outshine Martin in their joint film career.

"If anyone at my funeral has a long face, I'll never speak to him again." - Stan Laurel By Don Kidwell Laudable collection of comedians that are easily stars in their own right, throw in Burns & Allen and I'd of given this book the full 5 stars! I had already read and reviewed the "Three Stooges" segment back in August, as enjoyable as these brief bios are given the topic matter I stretched them out and read each of the others (Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello and Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis) over the course of three separate evenings (excellent table of contents, by the way, with handy links so you can read it in any order you choose). I came away really impressed with the info regarding Abbott & Costello - I had no idea Bud was drugged and dragged aboard a ship to Norway at age 15 and had to find his way back or that Costello was both a statewide foul-shot basketball champion and one-time professional boxer (Costello was the guy I would have liked to meet as he seemed like an all-around nice fellow with regards to all the charitable work he accomplished). I also liked learning about how Jerry Lewis went on to teach a course at USC that included the likes of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Real interesting, good value and also includes the full transcript of "Who's on First?" at the close making it a keeper in my opinion. How about one last passage by Oliver Hardy for the send-off, "Life is serious enough, anyway, so why do a lot of worrying. Just take things as they come." Very good book!

Forgotten Race Saving Grace, By Tina Huerta. Learning how to have reading practice resembles learning to try for consuming something that you actually don't want. It will need even more times to help. Additionally, it will certainly additionally little bit make to serve the food to your mouth and swallow it. Well, as reading a publication Forgotten Race Saving Grace, By Tina Huerta, in some cases, if you should read something for your brand-new jobs, you will feel so woozy of it. Even it is a book like Forgotten Race Saving Grace, By Tina Huerta; it will make you really feel so bad.

Dream Poetry By AngieF This collection contains poems of a dreamlike quality with vivid imagery that the reader can easily visualize in the mind’s eye. The author draws heavily from mythology as in the poem “Labyrinth,” but also writes of more everyday subjects as in “The Importance of Cat Exercising.” Whether drawing on fantasy or reality, the poems all seem to be firmly grounded in the emotions and personal history of the author. My favorites in this collection include “Before” which is filled with a mysterious longing and “Muse Variation” which captures the sense of movement and dancing of its subjects through a mixture of surreal imagery and sensuous clarity of words.

Sullivan Having never installed or played around with a Hadoop environment myself, I was on the look out for an intro style book that would give me the basics and enough info to start me off. When browsing this one caught my eye as I didn’t even realise there was a Hadoop 2 and the title was pretty much spot on for what I was looking for so decided to give it a shot.Overall, I enjoyed the book and it was spot on for what I was looking for. It’s a traditional tutorial/walk through type of book on how to get a Hadoop cluster up and running and how to admin/interact with it, but it also covers enough theory that you don’t need to have any prior experience with Hadoop to follow along. However, I would say that I think it’s overpriced in the paper edition and retail price ebook so if you’re interested in this book, try and read it on Safari or get a Kindle edition to make it affordable. Other than that definitely recommended. The book starts off with a really good overview of what Hadoop is, the MapReduce pattern and the changes in Hadoop 2. Good intro material. The next chapter is a more traditional walk through on how to install Hadoop uses both the Hortonworks distribution and the Apache sources. It also covers use of Ambari for a simple web based admin console for your cluster. Nothing too detailed is explained here as it’s covered off later, but it’s a straight forward walk through so is spot on for that. The third chapter gives a really good intro to how HDFS works, covering the nodes involved, their roles and the approach taken to replication and then some basic file system commands. I particularly enjoyed this chapter as I hadn’t used HDFS before and so some of the concepts around the different nodes, compute following data, append only files and block sizes were spot on for what I needed to understand. The forth chapter covers running jobs and monitoring them in the web gui, along with some examples for base lining the performance of the cluster. The fifth and sixth chapters walks through the MapReduce approach to data analysis, using word counting in text files as the main example and then moves on to the basics of writing code to create MapReduce jobs, covering the basics in Java and Python. Simple and straightforward, but again spot on in term of depth. The seventh chapter runs through some of the other Apache tools within the Hadoop ecosystem, covering Pig, Hive, Sqoop, Flume, Oozie and HBase. These are just quick overviews but interesting as I wasn’t aware of some of these. The eight chapter is really nice in that it focuses exclusively on YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), which is new to Hadoop 2 and is one of the big differences in the new version. It walks through how to use YARN for things other than the traditional MapReduce pattern, using the YARN distributed shell as an example, before touching briefly on how some of the other Apache tools can be used with YARN.The last two chapters focus on admining Hadoop through the commands required and the Ambari interface. I skimmed these as I’m only doing a very basic setup to get my head around Hadoop but would look back to these as needed. In summary, the author notes initially that this book is written to a "hello world" level in terms of depth and that’s spot on across the book. It gives you enough info to get you to a working example, and then it’s up to you. I really liked this analogy and it’s exactly the level I was looking for. I also liked the author’s style of writing so will also be going looking for more of his book to find some more advanced material on Hadoop. If you looking for an intro to Hadoop that’s a nice combination of both theory and high level tech implementation, then this is definitely worth a read. One thing I would say is that I got through the book very quickly (3 hours roughly), and was surprised to see when I checked Amazon that the paper version is just over 300 pages as it really didn’t feel like that. It reads more like a book of around 150 pages, which in my head makes sense for quick start book. Why I highlight this is that while I really enjoyed the book, as I mention earlier, I don’t think it’s worth the price of $27 that the paper version is currently retailing for. For me it’s more in the $15 - $18 bracket and so if you’re going to read this then definitely try and go for the Kindle edition which is worth it at $17.

This book is a quick read and an effective guide to getting started with Hadoop. For me, it took the nebulous world of Hadoop and brought it into the realm of understanding with real-world scenarios and practical usage. I've been working with relational databases for over two decades and to be honest the world of big data seemed overwhelming. After reading this book, I have an understanding of Hadoop and the potential solutions to managing big data needs. I would definitely recommend this book.

Great Introduction & Reference to Hadoop 2 By Len Keighley - BCS Fellow The book really does take you from soup to nuts, as they say in the US, starting with an introduction to the concepts and history of Hadoop and Big Data, through installation, file system basics, MapReduce Framework & Programming, Hadoop Tools (including Yarn applications), and finally the management and administration of Hadoop under Apache Ambari. The book also has its own web site, complete with code downloads, question & answer forums, resources links and update information. In essence there is something in the Hadoop 2 Quick Start Guide for everyone, from some that just want to see what all the Hadoop noise is about, to those that are regular Hadoop users or administrators. The format used is excellent for this type of book, and one that should perhaps set the standard for other ‘quick start’ guides. The instructions and code examples are easy to follow and provide all the required background. The layout also aids the reader who wants to pick and choose what they read, dependent on their needs at that time, while still providing for the reader who needs to see the whole picture.Particularly interesting was the section on HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) which provides information on the background to the chosen structure for its storage and command environment. One of the Appendices even gives a summary of the additional resource content in the full sections so that the really high level ‘helicopter’ reader is also served.Obviously, as the title suggests, there is more detail to be had and I look forward to reading Douglas Eadline’s books at that level as well.

The paradox of machined nature By J/R Carlson "Belief Stones" covers an impressive array of voices from a diverse and engaging cast of characters. It is both familiar and unknown, comfortable and arresting, spiritual and glib, natural and machined. Bisser's use of language is polished and deliberate, even when it is abrasive. His stories are carefully crafted, making this a collection of poems worth delving into.

Clements Belief Stones holds a number of provocative, conflicting, oppositional, and loving looks at things that are simply – and not so simply – life. The events and the particular “eye” Joel Bisser offers is keen, humorous, new, sometimes disparaging and sometimes hopeful. His observations and comparisons (for instance, the blazing orange of a Fleet Farm hunting cap being the same orange as Chaoattika, the Buddhist monks’ robes in Bisser’s poem, “Anicca (Impermanence)”, brings up a multitude of responses from within the reader. In “Another Evening”, it’s almost scary the way Bisser knows what it is like to be female and repeatedly scared, contrasted with “song” which sees and honors the many faces of female. Bisser’s poetry touches your beliefs and brings up strong new insights into the reader’s own world and moral view. Challenging and meaningful.T. C.

It is refreshing to hear the passionate voice of a person who places his personal responses to life within contextual historical circles that impose and weigh on all of us. There are brilliant moments here and there in the individual poems, and a voice that we should be grateful is not to be silenced. His are not “pretty” poems, for he does not allow us to look away from individual ills or those larger malign ones visited on us by leaders in high places. If some of the poems lack traditional forms, they also reflect the fragmentations that make them, as expressions of our culture, reflections of who we have become. I welcome his strong voice and daring to speak out. More power of belief stones to you, Joel.

Raspberry Pi LED Blueprints By Annette Herbst When I first saw the title of the book I thought by my self, why for god sake does someone publish a book on such a seemingly simple task on how to switch LEDs on and off with a Raspberry Pi (RPi). But curiosity won and I bought the book.Chapter 1 shortly introduces the raspberry and gives hints to install the required software. The first project starts already on page 7: It is (of course) a "Hello World project”: Three LEDs will blink, a GPIO will be read and several colors will be displayed using a RGB LED.Chapter 2 deals with 7-segment displays, shift registers and the design and implementation of a countdown timer.Chapter 3 describes a 4-digit-7-segment digital clock, introduces the I2C Bus and implements a digital clock using an OLED Graphic display. In Chapter 4 the author "plays" with an 8x8 LED dot matrix display in connection with the integrated circuit MAX7219.Chapter 5 describes a traffic light controller. In course of this project a channel relay module is introduced, a method is presented which allows the expansion of the number of GPIOs of the RPI. Finally, the author connects several integrated circuits of type MCP23017 to build a cascaded traffic light controller.Chapter 6 shows how to set up Bluetooth and establishing Bluetooth communication between a RPi und an Android Device in order to build a remote LED light controller.Chapter 7 is the most interesting part of the book because it deals with controlling LEDs via the Internet ("Internet of Things"). The chapter starts showing how to connect the RPI to a network (cable and WiFi), it then demonstrates how to implement Node.js on the RPi. After building a simple webserver using Node.js the author implements a RESTful system using Express for Node.js. He uses JSON to exchange data between the server and the client. Then he develops a program that allows the user to control LEDs connected to the RPi by a browser running on another (distant) computer. In the final part of this chapter the author develops an Android App by means of PhoneGap, a tool developed to build a cross-platform mobile app. This PhoneGap App combined with the above mentioned program enables the user to switch on 3 LEDs with his mobile Android device. To summarize:I don’t regret that I bought the book. It is well written and you don't have to be an EE-student to understand the technical content of chapter 1-6. The material presented in chapter 7 is quite ambitious for a newbie and it takes further reading of the given references to fully understand what’s going on.In order to really benefit from this book the reader should have some knowledge of Python, Java, Node.js, JSON etc. But even if he doesn't have prior knowledge, this book will provide him with well-documented "blueprints" which enables him to build the projects described therein himself. With minor changes he may use the blueprints to control other sensors or actuator.

Reading through it was a breeze and following the example provided a lot of insight in gpio programming in python and with the raspberry in general. I'm looking forward to get a bigger led matrix panel and build a huge led clock :-DNext I'd like to try a few of the examples on the windows 10 iot core operating system, since working with visual studio and c# is also a lot of fun.

Many of the stories had me laughing out loud briefly in spurts, which were quickly stifled as I realized I had performed similar acts of stupidity to those described by the author...still its good to know I'm not the only one.

About the Author William Blake (1757–1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognized during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry has led one British art journalist to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". Although he lived in London his entire life except for three years spent in Felpham he produced a diverse and symbolically rich corpus, which embraced the imagination as "the body of God", or "Human existence itself". Considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, Blake is held in high regard by later critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His paintings and poetry have been characterized as part of both the Romantic movement and "Pre-Romantic", for its large appearance in the 18th century. Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the Church of England, Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American revolutions, as well as by such thinkers as Jakob Böhme and Emanuel Swedenborg. Despite these known influences, the singularity of Blake's work makes him difficult to classify. The 19th century scholar William Rossetti characterised Blake as a "glorious luminary," and as "a man not forestalled by predecessors, nor to be classed with contemporaries, nor to be replaced by known or readily surmisable successors." Historian Peter Marshall has classified Blake as one of the forerunners of modern anarchism, along with Blake's contemporary William Godwin.

From AudioFile Both the student and connoisseur of the classics will enjoy this series of inexpensive audiobooks, each of which includes a Dover-Thrift edition of the text. The newcomer to classic poetry and prose, in particular, may experience in their spoken form an awakening to the beauty and power of these literary masters. It's hard to imagine a better introduction to William Blake's poetry than stage actors Brian Murray's and Suzanne Toren's audio rendition of SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE. Their alternating readings of Songs of Innocence vibrate with the reverence of Blake's vision of childhood as paradise lost; in Songs of Experience one fully senses Blake's later disillusion. The two books provide counterpoint to each other, an effect enhanced by the use of male and female readers. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

This book is not the book the other reviewers are talking about By Soski Other Amazon users may be familiar with the Amazon.com practice of posting the Editorial reviews from a SIMILAR product and adding marginal and easy-to-overlook footnotes stating that the posted reviews actually refer to an "alternate paperback edition." I was not aware of the practice before purchasing this book, but aside from that there is no twin footnote floating around the section below the Editorials to tell you that the reviews provided are from a different book as well, nor can you see what book is ACTUALLY being reviewed unless you leave the book's page and go to See All. Most of the reviews are for this book:Songs of Innocence and Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul, 1789-1794 (Worlds Classics) [Paperback] William Blake (Author, Illustrator), Sir Geoffrey Keynes (Introduction) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0192810898/ref=dp_proddesc_2?ie=UTF8&n=283155Why post reviews of a book that the reviews are not for, on its own page? That is not only confusing, but misleading. The book I bought and received is the one with a portrait of Blake on the cover, and its ISBN is 97816119492998--which is not the ISBN posted in Amazon.com's section, as of June 1, 2012. Amazon lists it as xxxxxxxxxx2997.There are NO illustrations in this edition. In fact, there isn't any publisher information beyond "Printed in the USA" on the bottom of the first page after the cover. I have not read this book, and am not familiar enough with Blake's work to be able to determine off the cuff if there are any errors or typos. I am assuming that if you only want the poetry of Songs of Innocence and Experience, than it is probably fine--and yes, most likely free of errors/typos. But this book is not an Oxford or any other dependably high-quality published edition. Most importantly, it is not the book that other customers reviewed, it is not a very high-quality or compelling edition in general, and it has no illustration plates. Do not buy this edition if you are a bibliophile looking for a beautiful and collectible book and/or you really want to experience the work of William Blake as it is meant to be experienced--that is, with his illustrations.

He is often overlooked because of the obliqueness of many of his poems. But this affordable (read: cheap) collection of poems is well worth the price of admission. Most of Blakes most famous and well loved poems are included in this volume. Most of us had to read at least a couple of these poems in school. The Tyger still stands as one of the great poems of the English language. The Fly, The Lamb, Children of a Future Age, London and Ah, Sunflower are all included here. These are some of the most beautiful poems ever written. Even if you struggle to understand the meaning, the sheer beauty and music of the verses can still carry you away. Anyone interested in poetry needs to read these poems. It is among the best ever written.

28 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Not for the tone deaf By Giuseppe C. To begin with, it can be helpful to distinguish between "aesthetic" worldly poets/musicians and "vatic"/prophetic artists. Keats and Shakespeare, Ellington and Bill Evans belong in the first category; Shelley and Milton (and, of course, Dante) along with John Coltrane and Sun Ra belong in the second.Blake is the foremost representative of the latter group--the bards (Milton was his hero; America's Ezra Pound his foremost descendant). Of all the so-called "Romantic" poets, he is in many respects the most atypical. Time, its passing, its presence as "personal memory," specific referents to particular places, the fleshing-out of human figures, whether upper or lower class--all this is of little interest to the visionary prophet written off as "crazy" during his life-time, eventually canonized by the Beatniks in the 1950s, and finally admitted to respectable academia. Earthly phenomena are of little interest to him because, frankly, they have no status in reality. I deliberately steer students away from his graphic art, because its symbolic nature is poorly understood by a generation brought up on images that glorify the material world (if the emphasis isn't on the "real," it's on the surreal or "hyper-real"--but the real with which today's readers identify is anything but the spiritual cosmos that Blake finds everywhere, whether a tiger or a grain of sand. (Pity his wife, who understandably had little patience with him.) More often than not, Blake's pictures nowadays detract from, rather than support, the poetry. When Blake said, "the eye can see more than the heart can know," he envisioned a human potential which few are able to realize--the sort of epiphany granted to the prophet who, after a lifetime of struggle, sees the New Jerusalem or, like Dante, the Godhead itself (the spinning wheel at the end of The Paradiso).Blake's poetry, in both the Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, is music that, even when tranquil and serene on the surface, is never resolved in its minor modalities and dissonant counter-themes. In the second set of poems, that verbal music rises to a deafening fortissimo in the poem "London," in which the speaker, above all, "hears" in every cry--from the infant's to the prostitute's to the numerous thralls of the church, state and crown--a threnody of pain and suffering that climaxes in an uproar of righteous anger and indignation at the horrible realization of the consequences of "mind-forged manacles" upon the world and its inhabitants. But even in the poems from the early collection, the tone is characterized by ever-present irony--the disjuncture between the voice of the innocent child and that of the poet who knows all too well what is in store, or the disparity between the trusting faith of the child and the selfish scenarios of the "wise" keepers--the grey-haired beadles--who will violate that trust with their well-laid plans. Blake's message is unceasingly twofold--first, a testament to the holy birthright of the human child and, second, withering criticism of the "rational engines" of society that will act to estrange the child from the Father, from the Son, from its own spiritual identity. Each of the poems may be read simply, but make no mistake about it: each is ironic and complex, inexhaustibly so. The reader must, with each passing word, be attuned, above all, to irony, ambiguity, and radical shifts in tone--or risk inflicting upon the poet the same distortions the poet finds in human society. The "enemy" is not the "Tiger" which, like the Lamb, is merely evidence of Divine Mystery and Power--but of another order. For Blake, the Lamb, the Tiger, the babe--and a poisonous reptile or virus--are created by God and are equally holy. And now the true antagonist makes its appearance: human reason and its institutions--climaxing in the state-sanctioned marriage of children and parents to the "bridegroom" of organized government and religion. It can be discouraging to read these poems with students and discover, practically without fail, that a large majority will misinterpret them, frequently coming to conclusions opposite to the evidence of the poems individually as well as collectively. The reasons are at least three-fold: fast and careless readings of short poems that often require (and deserve) the amount of time devoted to a novel; imposition of one's own belief system (or instilled principles and conventional aphorisms); the sheer challenge offered by Blake's "radical" ideas and their deceptive expression. Those who are serious about poetry and Blake will no doubt soon infer his "message": we must see not with the eye of reason, which measures and "charters" the flowing Thames as readily as it maps out the dehumanizing streets of London, but with the imagination, with the symbolic faculty that enables us to see the underlying spiritual basis of all material reality and thus to empathize with all living things and to live in harmony only with what is alive and vital. Blake is the first thinker I'm familiar with who puts the child first and foremost--and not until the early 19th century. For the Age of Enlightenment (The Age of Reason), children simply don't count. They have no individualism, no identity, no status in art and literature. In his own time, children were little more than the utilitarian objects of the Church-State, deployed to sweep chimneys, then disposed of. The dying chimney sweep of the first "Chimney Sweeper" poem (how regrettable that many readers do not even understand that little Tommy Dacer's "awakening" at the end of the poem is possible only because of his "murder" by the church) is, in the 2nd poem of the same title, a dead child, whose excoriating criticism includes his parents but is leveled primarily at the church. Some readers dismiss the second poem because it doesn't make sense to have a dead child lying in the snow and speaking--it's not rational. But that's to place ourselves at the mercy of the poems' judgments--as misguided tools of Reason, deaf to the harmonious world and the discordant society around us. If it helps to postpone taking on some of the more difficult poems in either collection, fine. But each poem, each ironic line and musical phrase, each word and note of sorrow or joy is integral with the whole, each part absolutely and completely consistent with the overall theme, meaning and purpose. Seeing with the imagination requires practice and patience: reclaiming one's inner child (Wordsworth's "child-philosopher" who, trailing clouds of glory, is borne of another realm and place) is not a piece of cake. Neither is reading Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience.
