THE SYNTHESIS AND THE ANIMUSTHE PHANTOM OF THE EARTH: BOOK THREE In the Great Commonwealth of Beimeni, a subterranean civilization in North America, expansion long ago gave way to peace and prosperity in the face of the history's most devastating plague. Immortality is the reward for service and loyalty in Beimeni, a place where the physical blends with the metaphysical and power consolidates in the hands of those with a genetic edge. The fissures first spread slowly, then swiftly, until now the Great Commonwealth finds itself on the brink of economic devastation, challenged by forces from within that know its secrets and its crimes. At the center of the conflict lie the Selendias of Piscator, founders of the resistance with an uncanny connection to the zeropoint field, and the Barão Strike Team, three researchers tasked with finding a cure to the Reassortment Strain, the plague that nearly wiped transhumankind from the Earth. Traveling from the uninhabitable but pristine surface to the habitable but inhospitable underground, this is a story about dedication to dreams, battle for survival, discovery and connection, song and celebration, undoing past misdeeds, and sacrifice for the greater good.In The Synthesis and the Animus, former RDD scientist Antosha Zereoue has returned to Beimeni from the Lower Level, while Captain Broden Barão is challenged by the Liberation Front. As the commonwealth prepares to honor two hundred years of Chancellor Atticus Masimovian's rule, disparate sides will reconcile differences and form an accord with consequences that shake the underground. MORE ABOUT THE PHANTOM OF THE EARTHThe Phantom of the Earth is a thought-provoking post-apocalyptic science fiction series. It relies heavily upon synthetic biology and quantum physics.

The Synthesis and the Animus (The Phantom of the Earth Book 3), by Raeden Zen

Review David Estes, Author of The Moon Dwellers -- "[THE SONG OF THE JUBILEE] is a major SciFi book. It is extremely well-written and has a compelling post-apocalyptic hook. The characters and their situations are interesting (scientist, rebel leader, etc.). The underground but highly technologically based setting is vividly described." IndieReader Official Review -- "In a post-apocalyptic world, trans-human scientists fight a deadly disease while rebels battle with the leaders of Earth's last Commonwealth. ... This is the beginning of a complicated and intricate science fiction epic. ... The characters' personalities and backgrounds are revealed bit by bit in the course of the story, naturally and believably, so that they appear as three-dimensional people with real backgrounds and understandable motivations - no cardboard heroes or villains here. THE SONG OF THE JUBILEE is a vigorous yet thorough introduction to a very promising new science fiction world."  Rowena Hoseason, Top 50 Reviewer (Amazon UK) -- "Dazzling. That's the impact of this intro to an extensive dystopian sci-fi saga. The first book in a series of five, [THE SONG OF THE JUBILEE] sets the scene and themes in a complex, carefully crafted future history. ... [It's] a relatively short book. It contains a complete story arc, but it is only the tip of the overall tale. If you find yourself intrigued by the extensive cast of characters and the unfolding multiple scenarios, then you'll want to hop straight on to the next in the series, [THE GAMBIT WITH PERFECTION]."  What readers are saying:"The Phantom of the Earth is very thought-provoking and raises questions not just about what we would do in the event of an apocalypse but how we associate today in our society.""For me, a physics major, the high point was the scientific accuracy of the many elements used to create the world under the surface, and to create the material goods and human skills that make this world habitable.""Mr. Zen has created vivid, complex characters who populate a fully realized and gorgeous world where he spins storylines that capture your imagination and attention and holds it through the entire series of books.""An epic sci-fi adventure spread across a collection of five books in this special bundle.""There is no doubt that this series is a must read for all the lovers of science fiction and I wouldn't be surprised if I see it on the big screen someday.""As an engineer, I appreciated the author's commitment to scientific accuracy. He clearly consulted scientists and engineers about the subject matter, which emphasizes biology and genetic engineering.""Above all, this impressively detailed, passionately created glimpse of a possible post-human future is sure to be regarded as a notable addition to science fiction literature.""From one plot twist to another, Raeden Zen managed to deliver a solid succession of cliffhangers and resolutions from the first book to the last.""If I had one word to describe this omnibus edition of Raeden Zen's The Phantom of the Earth series it would be: spectacular."

From the Author FROM THE EDITORIt was a pleasure to edit Raeden Zen's Phantom of the Earth Series, a subterranean post-apocalyptic that readers of hard science fiction will enjoy. As much credit as Raeden deserves for getting the science right, consulting with leading researchers in the field of synthetic biology and synthesizing information from a wealth of primary sources, what makes this series most compelling for me is the intergenerational conflict it explores. At its heart, this is a story about two families, the Selendias and the Barão-Rheas, who share a common goal of reclaiming earth's surface for humanity. But they come from factions with very different ideas about how much personal liberty the citizens of Beimeni should sacrifice to achieve this aim.  Eternal partners Broden Barão and Damosel Rhea, both scientists, work within Chancellor Masimovian's regime to defeat the plague that drove humankind underground. High achievers within a society that prizes scientific progress, they have every reason to accept the status quo, even if that means banishing underachievers to the Lower Level and sending insurgents to their deaths on the earth's surface. At the series' outset, the Barão-Rheas consider their lives forfeit to the greater cause of humanity's survival, just like anyone else.  Meanwhile, Johann Selendia, interim president of the resistance movement, strives to free his father from imprisonment and keep his underdeveloped brother from harm. The urgency behind this mission is both tactical and personal given that Johann's father, the founder of the Liberation Front, stands to reveal sensitive secrets if he cracks under interrogation. At stake are the lives of millions of members of the Liberation Front, including children, a rare sight in the commonwealth, where babies are developed into adults in a matter of days.  What I so enjoy about this series is that neither death nor banishment can extinguish the true history of the Great Commonwealth of Beimeni, which surfaces bit by bit despite the efforts of those in power to snuff it out. A five-book series is the perfect format to advance this big-canvas story, giving us first a glimpse, then a footing, and finally the full scope of the world Raeden Zen has created. From book to book, children, siblings, and compatriots take up the flag for their cause before it hits the ground. Endings are therefore beginnings, the line between good and evil blurry at best. Discovering Beimeni along with its characters is an intense ride that reaches epic heights by the series' end--an experience not to be missed. -Erin Wilcox, EditorABOUT THE EDITORThe former nonfiction editor of Drunken Boat and copyeditor for Alaska Quarterly Review, Erin Wilcox has edited some of the finest talent of our day, from literary legend Grace Paley to 2015 Pulitzer Prize winner Gregory Pardlo. From the Inside Flap Wilcox Editing Services Q&A with Author Raeden Zen Erin Wilcox: Hi, I'm Erin Wilcox and I'm here with author Raeden Zen, who is a client of mine and the author of the Phantom of the Earth series. How are you, Raeden? Raeden Zen: I'm doing well, how are you? EW: Excellent, and I'm very excited to be talking with you today about your books. Would you run down, just very quickly, what are the titles of the five books that you've written? RZ: Sure, so there are five books and the first book is The Song of the Jubilee, the second book is The Gambit with Perfection, the third book is The Synthesis and the Animus, the fourth book is The Descent into the Maelstrom, and the fifth book is The Restoration of Flaws. EW: And all told, how many pages have you written? Or words, or however you want to measure? RZ: In total it's about 415,000 words or about 1,650 pages. EW: Wow. So it's this huge big-canvas story, and there's just a whole lot of great world stuff, and there's always that question about how are we going to enter this world and find a way in. So I'm curious, and I'm sure our listeners are also curious, who is the main character that we meet first in book one? RZ: The first main character is Johann Selendia, and he is the son of the resistance leader. Initially, the conflict begins where the government has apprehended his father and Johann must act as leader of the resistance in his father's place. EW: And he is the resistance leader for what movement? What conflict is Johann engaged in? RZ: So the conflict is called the Evolutionary War and it's basically a decades-long guerilla war between the Liberation Front and the government of Atticus Masimovian. Johann's father and his mother founded the movement, although at the time of the story his mother has already been killed by the government, and his father at the start of the story has been taken captive. So Johann has to make a choice when his older brother unexpectedly arrives at his inaugural celebration, and he delivers new intel. His name is Zorian, and he lets Johann know he has new intel and schematics to the prison where he tells Johann that their father is being held. EW: Okay, so the plan is prison break--and spring Dad. Alright, very good, and where is all this happening? RZ: So it's happening inside the earth. It's really a three-dimensional setting, but the main setting is 2,500 meters deep inside the earth. That's where the main commonwealth lies, and then the rebels are sort of holed up in a shallower depth of 300 meters, but all of the story ... most of the story ... is inside the earth. EW: The rebels and the resistance leaders are one side in the Evolutionary War, and would you outline the other side? RZ: Yeah, so the main other side is the commonwealth--it's the Great Commonwealth of Beimeni. It's led by Atticus Masimovian and his wife, Isabelle Lutetia. Basically, it comes down to a vision for how to lead humanity in this sort of advanced world where everyone can live forever. If they serve the government, the government will allow them access to gene therapy that will enable them to live forever, and it's sort of a conflict between how to handle that kind of technology, how to handle immortality. The government handles it one way, where if you serve them you get it and have access to it, and the rebels don't feel that's the way the world should be run. They think everyone should have equal opportunity to basically live their lives the way they want, and that's essentially what the battle is over... Read and/or listen to the rest of the interview at wilcoxediting.com.

The tension really increased in this one and I found myself reading it faster and faster with each part. Lady Isabelle truly believes in what she’s doing and that makes her a far more dangerous antagonist than she otherwise might be, while Antosha is just a poetic slug. The ending was so fast-paced and surprising I had to immediately jump into THE DESCENT INTO THE MAELSTROM. Good on the author for publishing them all at the same time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fast paced and well worth the read By Portia Kai This is the third book in "the phantom of the earth" series. I am getting really enveloped in this post apocalyptic world and the characters. I highly recommend starting with the first book and continuing with the second before you start this one. The writers style is different from other writers which I find rather enchanting. I am intrigued by the clinical trials and the deadly disease that has run rapid and at the end of the previous two books I was left wanting to know more and continue on with the book. I'm glad there's a 4th book to read I plan on starting that this weekend. I always hate it when you loose a character you have grown to like, worse when it's more than one, and then new ones are introduced and you hate them only because they are filling the void the ones you grew to love are gone, then they slowly grow on you the way the old ones did. I feel like I want to hate Lady Isabelle and yet I get that she is passionate about her cause and she really thinks she is doing the right thing to better the world but at the same time you just really want to hate her. In this book you find out more about Antosha's plan which adds to the plot of Synthesis and the Animus. I like how Raeden Zen's books are fast paced and the rhythm of the book is very fast which keeps you excited to keep reading and not stop until the book is finished.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This series just gets better and better!!! By Takesha In book three there is so much more going on, as it is obviously going to get juicer with each book of this series. The BP's plan really sets into motion during this part of the story, which was refreshing and put a good spin on things. Diving in, and connecting with new characters, and sadly loose a couple of well known, and liked characters. You find out a more deep understanding of what Antosha Zereoue has up his sleeve, yet not the complete scenario. A tactic I don't mind, I love the mysteriousness of his whole character. I was so glad to see Conner proving himself, and also see some of his ability with the ZPM pan out, as well as my suspicion of Zorian played out to be more of what I 'hoped' rather than what I was thinking:) The story is really captivating, and heating up by the chapter.

Poetry and prayer have a number of things in common. Both push language to its limits in an attempt to describe the expanse of the human condition, as well as articulate our earthly perspective on divine-human interface. They are equal respecters of blank space and silence, because these are the places where others are invited to join the conversation – both the “other” of God and the “other” of neighbor. Tuesday’s Muse is an invitation for readers to join their own stories with those of the community of faith.

Beverly Hills, 90210's Jennie Garth shares her life experiences both on screen and off in this humorous and heartwarming memoir...“Revealing myself in these pages has been at times terrifying, but also one of the most liberating experiences of my life.…” In this candid and intimate memoir, Jennie Garth explores the highs and lows of her life, both in front of the camera and behind closed doors, revealing the joys and sorrows, successes and failures that have made her one unforgettable Hollywood blonde. From her rise to fame as a golden-haired teen beauty, to redefining herself as a single working mother, Jennie Garth has defied the odds and thrived in a town that can be more than a little tough on its blondes. Since Jennie landed in Hollywood at just sixteen, she has built an enduring career as a television and film actress, producer, and director, beginning with her iconic turn as Kelly Taylor on Aaron Spelling’s smash hit Beverly Hills, 90210, a show that ran for a decade and that cemented Jennie’s place in American pop culture. Recently, Jennie found herself facing her forties from a place she never expected to be in: newly single, in demand again as an actress after years spent focusing on her family, and all over the tabloids. With candor and a bawdy sense of humor, this is the real Jennie Garth—smart, funny, and stronger than she ever realized.

99 of 108 people found the following review helpful. I hate to do this By Emily Writing this review kills me in a way because I am a HUGE "90210" and Jennie Garth fan, but I was sadly unimpressed with this book and feel compelled to make potential readers aware. I understand the courage it takes to tell your story, and I commend Jennie for putting herself out there, but unfortunately this memoir was haphazardly put together, and as a result, the reader suffers. I actually found myself wondering why co-writer Emily Heckman failed to put this story into a cohesive narrative by the time I got to chapter four. As the assumed professional writer, she is the one I hold most responsible. As previous reviewers have mentioned, there are basic and jarring fact checking errors regarding "90210" that I can't find any excuse for. When you know that your readers are largely huge fans of the show, getting the high school name wrong (repeatedly referring to it as "Beverly High School" instead of "West Beverly") and claiming that Kelly Taylor was in high school at the end of season 7 ("the gang" graduates college in this season's finale) makes the story surrounding her experiences sound ridiculous. She mentions that it was hard playing an "angsty teen" while she was pregnant, and I suppose this would be hard except that it didn't happen- the Kelly character was already 22 by this point. She also references Luke joining the show in the summer of 1991 when he actually began his run on "90210" in season 1, episode 2.Putting hiccups on "90210" trivia aside, the overall content of this story leaves something to be desired. On the "90210," section, Jennie talks at length about the decor and color of her dressing room. Sadly, that's also the only new information she provides about the show. Other "behind the scenes" stories have all been told countless times: the jet ski accident, the binaca incident, shooting in gritty Van Nuys, her admission that she was initially rude to Tiffani (yet quizzically ommitting any direct mention of their subsequent fall-out), the "red dress controversy," her brush with agoraphobia... if you've followed the show at all, you've heard this all before. And if you haven't followed the show, I would imagine it might be hard to follow her recollections of the show since they include plenty of vagueness and innuendo. For instance, she refers to Shannen at one point as "one girl who was wearing black." Just say "Shannen." It's been 20 years.I believe Jennie is someone with a sweet spirit, and my favorite part of the book is about her childhood, growing up on a farm in Illinois which she successfully describes as an idyllic upbringing. After that, the timeline takes a nose-dive, jumping around in chronological order, and becoming very fuzzy on the details. I could read one chapter fifty times and still not have a clear sense as to which family members moved with her to Arizona even though she cites this relocation, having to leave some family members behind, as life changing. It doesn't help that she also gets years and ages wrong, persistently comparing her time working on "90210" to life in a normal high school, implying that she and the other actors were of high school age at the time...(she and Shannen were 18 & 19 when they started working on "90210" and Jason was 21)."90210" aside, I'm confused with how the writers and editors decided which stories would make this book. Early on, there is an entire chapter dedicated to her habit of zoning out in business meetings that makes very little sense and isn't connected to the rest of the narrative. There is another chapter about kombucha that is supposed to be funny but isn't and doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the story either. She glosses over big details (her first marriage and divorce is covered in what feels like 100 words) yet continues on for paragraphs with one analogy after another describing life in general: "putting the oxygen on yourself before helping others is what it's like raising kids" and hundreds more just like that. Novel adjectives ("badass" among others) are funny the first times they're used but lose their punches when repeated two paragraphs later. A professional editor should know to look for this kind of thing, yet these rooky mistakes are pervasive throughout the book.I am critical of the book, but I feel compassion for Jennie and again blame co-writer Emily Heckman and the editors for schlocking this story together and pasting the actress' face on the cover. She's an actress, not a writer, and someone should've more closely monitored the final product. The chapter about her father's death is heartbreakingly personal and touching, and it's too bad this tone isn't consistent throughout. As her father is deceased and wasn't in the public eye, I almost get the sense that she feels free to discuss him whereas she obviously holds back when referring to her co-workers and Peter. This hesitancy is certainly understandable (and I know Peter is the father of her children), but when you're asking people to shell out $25.00 to read your story, you do owe them at least their money's worth. I'm not suggesting that she should've done a racy tell-all, but the descriptions of her experiences going through divorce are filled with stock examples of being sad and depressed without much true candor or emotion. Overall, I'm left trying to figure out which type of book the writers were attempting to achieve: it's not a well-written personal account like Carole Radziwill's "What Remains;" it's not a funny book of essays or narratives ala Chelsea Handler or Tina Fey; and it's not an advice book like Jessica Alba's "The Honest Life." Instead, it teeters uneasily between the three styles, never quite hitting any of them. For "90210" fans, I recommend "Stori Telling" by Tori Spelling as an alternative. I love Jennie, but for the typical reader "Hollywood Blonde" is truly hard to stick with, and Jennie lacks the natural sense of humor that comes so easily to Tori (to her credit though, Jennie acknowledges in the book that she isn't funny). One thing I've always noticed and admired about Jennie is that her three girls all seem to be the sweetest and most loving children imaginable so maybe a self-help book on motherhood is more up her alley. She's definitely doing something right, unfortunately though, it just isn't showcased here. However as always, I do look forward to her next project!

By grounden1985 I bought this mainly to get some behind-the-scenes dirt on what happened on the set of Beverly Hills, 90210, as it was the first show I watched religiously as a teenager in the 1990s.But Jennie seems very...confused...about the timeline of certain things regarding the show, and it makes me wonder if she's "all there."For example, she talks about how the show's producers decided to do a summer season of the show at the beginning of season two, which is true, but she goes on to mention that they made a brilliant decision in bringing on a new character named Dylan (played by Luke Perry) to be the "rebel" of the show in a short arc. The problem is that Dylan was introduced in the second episode of the first season...certainly not season two.She also spends some time talking about her first pregnancy and how the producers decided to hide it because they didn't want her character to be the poster child for underage pregnancy, despite the fact that at this point in time her character was no longer underage in the show. Then she talks about shooting one of the season finales and trying to hide her baby bump. She mentions how weird it was to still be playing a high school girl while pregnant, and mentions this was around the seventh or eighth season of the show. Um, Jennie...by the seventh or eighth season, your character had been out of high school for four years. Remember, you kind of all graduated at the end of season three? The characters were graduating college by the end of the seventh season, and yet she mentions she was still playing a high school girl. It's little details like this that irked me about the book. She seems not very well-informed on the very show she starred in for 10 years, and it makes me wonder if she is remembering everything else clearly or not.She also mentions just showing up to work one day to find her co-star Shannen Doherty no longer there. She acts like this was a complete mystery to her, and indeed her wording of Doherty's exit from the show makes it sound like she was literally there on set one day and gone the next with no explanation. Jennie acts like she had no idea what happened to her and proceeds to talk about how she took over her old dressing room. Well, Shannen Doherty left the show at the end of the fourth season after the finale was filmed, so there was actually a pretty long hiatus between the finale and the beginning of filming for season five, so how exactly was Doherty there one day and gone the next? Either Jennie's memory is worse than I imagined, or she is trying to act like she had no knowledge of Doherty exiting the show prior to actually showing up on set and realizing she was gone, which, I'm sorry, is total crap. There is no way the producers or writers did not mention to her that Doherty would not be returning to the show, especially considering the whole world knew about it at this point. Come on, Jennie.I give her applause for admitting she wasn't always the easiest person to get along with on set, and she specifically mentions being a bitch to Tiffani Thiessen in the beginning despite making amends as the show went on.All in all, it was nice to get some backstory on the goings-on of the show, but Jennie's confusion about certain things really hampered my enjoyment of this memoir a lot.

This is the third, unabridged edition of a comics-format book that was first published in 1991. It is essentially the same book as the second edition, expect that it has been reformatted to 7.5” x 9.25,” to match the author’s other books. The first edition offered Steven M. Johnson's illustrations of his preposterous, plausible and prophetic inventions and scenes of the future. For the second edition, the author-illustrator dug into old files and located 96 concept sketches that had not appeared in the first book, and redrew them when they needed more definition. The book gives a unique and imaginative view of possible future scenes based on technologies and cultural trends in 1990. Many familiar features of the world today, such as small smart phones and the World Wide Web, did not exist then. Some readers will discover that the book's vivid, strange or humorous images still seem fresh, and that today's America looks a lot like what Mr. Johnson imagined 24 years earlier.

Public Therapy Buses, Information Specialty Bums, Solar Cook-A-Mats and Other Visions of the 21st Century: Third Edition, Unabridged, by Steven M. Johnson

About the Author In 1974, at age 35 Steven M. Johnson had a sideline business creating cartoons for publication in magazines. His satirical images on environmental issues were appearing each issue in The Sierra Club Bulletin, later renamed Sierra Magazine. An editor asked him to invent and draw 16 satirical images of future recreation vehicles and he produced more than 100 ideas before he decided to stop. Since then, his whimsical inventions have appeared in magazines newspapers and books in the U.S., Japan and Sweden. They are often seen online at sites that feature unusual ideas for products and inventions. His three books display his often odd, whimsical, plausible and at times prophetic ideas. His three careers have all touched on the subject of the future, first as an urban planner working on future city plans, second as a newspaper illustrator creating a weekly cartoon panel that showed his ideas for future products, and lastly in the R&D section of a Japanese auto maker working as a futurist working in a small department that studied future trends and scenarios.

AS A JOURNALIST, TOM PHILLIPS covered the turbulent second half of the 20th century from New York, Moscow, Prague, Beijing, South Africa and Somalia. As a seeker, he hitch-hiked across America, rode the rails to the four corners of India, sat with a Japanese Zen master, and encountered Christianity on a subway escalator. That's just the surface of this engaging memoir, both a panorama of history and a personal account of a beginner's life-one adventure after another.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A reluctant journalist's remarkable journey By Nuzmon Tom Phillips writes a wonderful memoir of a reluctant journalist, a man who would rather be a folksinger or a ballet dancer or a whirling dervish, but who jumps at a chance to chase stories around the world from the Velvet Revolution to Tiananmen Square to Nelson Mandela's release."My true nature is the present moment," Phillips announces as his moment of Zen epiphany. His journey through journalism and life has a bit of phenomenology about it, a sense that the meaning of our existence is created by what people do in each moment. It is an extremely kind book by a writer who prefers self-deprecation to criticism of others, but it offers insights into the incredible characters who entered Phillips life, from Walter Cronkite to Peter Matthiessen to Dan Rather. He calls his memoir "A Beginner's Life" in recognition not only that he continually redefines himself, but also that he approaches each episode with the relish of a novice. Though at times he portrays himself as Willy Loman, he generally approaches the world with optimism, seeking truth and beauty on a path that carries him to the clubs of San Francisco in the '60s, ashrams of India in the '70s and the revolutions in Czechoslovakia, China and South Africa in the '80s and '90s.His search carries him through two families, the news desks of two famous news anchors, and the doctrines of two great religions. He looks coolly at his own failures, and is too hard on himself, but that's one thing that makes this book so human. As a journalist and man, he has witnessed great great moments in history. But his life is made of much smaller things -- talented children, a warm and devout wife, and long years playing fiddle for a band named the Fish Family. But that makes the story larger, for as I read it seems we are on a shared journey, one that takes us perhaps not to great heights of success but instead to powerful moments of joy and understanding.I am biased, of course. Tom Phillips was my professor and remains my mentor and role model. And he says exceedingly kind things about me in his book. I picked up the book because I know him and I wanted to read what he said about me. But I completed the book because it spoke in clear words -- the language of a great television news writer -- of a deep and representative life. His memoir resonates in me because he asked so many of the same questions I did, but pursued the answers with a vigor that people like me can only imagine.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. funny and poignant By Joyce Hamlin This book is indeed an adventure. It's honest, well written, funny and poignant. Phillip's journey encourages us all on our own adventures.Like many men, Tom Phillips was determined to be successful. And he did well. As a journalist, he worked for Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather and Katie Couric. He witnessed Gorbachev's Moscow, the Velvet Revolution in Czechosolovakia, Tienanmin Square and Nelson Mandela's return from prison. Phillips met life head on (and it gave him plenty of knocks). But Phillips also sought meaning in life. He learned about Judaism, meditated at Zen Buddhist retreats and studied at India's ashrams before he encountered Christianity while coming out of a New York subway. The book is a great read!

Brown A wonderful memoir of a remarkable life told by a master story-teller with an incredible memory! From an unusual childhood to the ballet, to India and the study of Zen, to journalism, to a career in journalism that allowed him to witness history first hand, to a stunning epiphany, to a life with a warm, loving family. Highly recommended!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the book you begin with. It's a challenge for those with more-than-beginner skills. By Lorraine Berry I started doing codeword puzzles this past summer, when my mum got me interested. I thought that I had become good at it, and have found other codeword books to be filled with puzzles that were not much of a challenge. Not this one. Whereas I used to be able to sit and do several puzzles in a row, with the TELEGRAPH's book, I sit with one puzzle and it takes me a while to finish it. Nothing is obvious, and some of the easy ways of figuring things out -- looking for the "ing" combinations, for example -- are not relevant in this book. Each puzzle has been tough, although not impossible, and I've loved feeling as if I'm starting all over again with learning the skills.

Both Funny and Serious Collection of Stories, Plays, Poems, and Essays By Diane H This book seemed at first like I was reading the required daily writing journal of the quiet, nerdy boy next to me in my 11th grade Creative Writing class. It contains a variety of items including essays, stories, plays, poems and Shakespearian play updates. Most are funny, especially the footnotes. What's not to like about a second generation American seeing Superman as an "immigration story"? The QR code links to YouTube contain images you are unlikely to forget. There are a few serious stories like The Girl Who Became a Gun.In the third section of the book, the author finally begins to discuss libertarianism in extremely serious blog reposts. He makes a great point that using government funds received by taxing artists to fund other, possibly lesser, artists makes absolutely no sense. The selection of what is good art is always subjective and having a huge bureaucracy do it is absurd. I also have wondered why there are few people interested in serious issues anymore but instead just want to watch the same recycled plots over and over again in movies and plays.I enjoyed both sections of the book but I believe the lack of transition between the two types of writing was too abrupt. It would have better to separate the two into two books. I spent the first two thirds of the book wondering how the title related to what I was reading because the title covers only the topics in the last third of the book.I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway but that did not impact my review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent piece from a immensely talented writer. By LauraLee Miller In this book phillip andrew bennet low puts to shame the notion: "Brevity is the soul of wit." Filled with insightful comments, concerns, and questions this book is an excellent choice for those unwilling to trust a government but are willing to trust the opinions of an artist. With his offbeat sense of humour, he offers up a desperate cry for common sense for the country, if not the world. However, I would say that this book is suited for ages 17 up. Maybe 18. Okay, maybe 57. What I mean to say is it have foul language, sexual references and discusses dark themes in places. If any of these sound displeasing this is not the book for you. However, if what I have just written intrigues you should purchase this book and enjoy. I highly recommend his other work as well.Semper Inquirentes.-Tristan

Wickedly funny and viciously intelligent By Eve's Folly I was unexpectedly given a copy of this book for an honest review, and I'll tell you, I didn't know what to think at first glance. Was it random political ranting by a flat-out crazypants? Once I actually turned my brain on and got a closer look, I started to chuckle, and by halfway through I was an absolute fan. The author may keep a low profile (pun intended) but he is an accomplished writer and performer with a wonderfully wicked sense of humour. He is also viciously intelligent and terrifyingly well-read. This book ranges from sophomoric laughs to incisive political and cultural observations. All the stories are clever, funny, and engaging, and even those wildly uninterested in politics should read it.

Good story line By Amazon Customer This, as well as the first two n the series, were very well written and highly entertaining Fans of the post apocalyptic genre will enjoy these. Grammatical errors were hardly noticeable For me, that is indicative of a highly entertaining work. Hate waiting on more installments.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great read ... By mgentry These books are great but the readers need more material. To read. I really enjoy these books. As a reader, you will learn how to do things, how to prepare, and the mental attitude that it takes to survive. Don and Kate are role models, so read, enjoy, learn, and save some food.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good story. But again too short and do not like gimmick to make it appear longer. By Avid Reader Author has a good story line but plays too many editorial tricks to make a couple of long chapter appear like a book. In the first of this series it was a very short book but with normal line spacing and margins. In book II he doubled the margins and line spacing in an apparent attempt to make the "book" appear longer. Quite a few comments on how short the book was and one reviewer even sent pictures of the spacing. Although I enjoyed the story I did not enjoy this gimmick or the author's dismissive way of responding to the issue so I did not continue to buy the short stories until last night. Hoping the author had learned from the complaints I purchased book III. Again good story and the author had corrected the line spacing but with "Justified" margins that are twice the width of a normal Kindle book. Wish authors would spend their time on fleshing out the book more and less on editorial gimmicks to meet deadlines.

"Properly, the Jew ought hardly to be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk. His contributions to the world's list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and abstruse learning are also away out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers ..." Mark Twain Concerning The Jews Harpers, 1899 What Steven L. Pease did in 2009 with his book The Golden Age of Jewish Achievement an exhaustive 624-page compendium has been more than matched by The Debate Over Jewish Achievement, a thoughtful, balanced and ultimately astounding exploration of the why behind the what of Jewish achievement. Pease traces more than 100 years of major theories put forth to explain the phenomenon, using the technique of a Chronology to expose the strengths and flaws of each theory over time. He puts nature (genetics) and nurture (Jewish culture) under an unrelenting microscope, drawing on recent research into the impacts of culture as well as the breakthroughs in genetics following completion of the Human Genome Project. Some of that research has established, beyond any reasonable doubt, the genetic heritage and linkages between most of the world s Jews dating back thousands of years: the Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrahim and others. Pease also explores how new ways of thinking, such as epigenetics, are moving beyond conventional genetics to present new insights into how nature and nurture may interact to shape what we become. While Pease invites readers to keep an open mind during the time travel of his Chronology, he himself comes down firmly on the side of culture as the most important driving influence behind Jewish achievement. And he is orthright about what he sees as the critical lessons to be gleaned from Jewish achievement, as they relate to us all.

The Debate Over Jewish Achievement: Exploring the Nature and Nurture of Human Accomplishment, by Steven L. Pease

Review

Six years ago, businessman-turned-author Steven Pease published a remarkable book, The Golden Age of Jewish Achievement, a compendium that convincingly chronicled the disproportionate level of Jewish accomplishment in virtually every area of human endeavor.

That was the what of the author s objective. The current book, The Debate Over Jewish Achievement, seeks to find and isolate the why.

Pease, a bright and perceptive writer, has his own theories about this. In a nutshell, he hypothesizes that centuries of hard-earned mental discipline through Torah, Talmudic and rabbinical studies uniquely prepared the Jewish mind for demanding tasks in realms beyond religion.

These tasks began to become manifest in the early 19th century, when the Enlightenment opened doors to Jewish thinkers most importantly in the arts and sciences that had heretofore been closed to them.

After that, look out. Jewish achievement suddenly found itself on the fast track. Pease s theoretical foundation, of course, is much deeper and more complex than that. He explores such areas as epigenetics, a relatively new science that seeks answers from both nature and nurture in characterizing and gauging human development.

He does not, however, limit his research to those areas most likely to support his own theses, nor does he insist that his own take on such questions is the only valid path. Pease examines current research in a variety of fields genetics, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, child development and sociology and wisely leaves the ultimate conclusions to his readers.

Although obviously fascinated by Jews and Jewish culture, Pease comes from a non-Jewish background and assures his readers that he is not aspiring to become Jewish.

His sole objective, he writes, is encouraging human achievement.

In other words, what Jews have accomplished, despite millennia of persecution and oppression, can provide valuable lessons for the human race in general.

Jewish culture is unique, the author writes, but its elements are not. We can learn from them.

By Chris Leppek, IJN Assistant Editor --Intermountain Jewish News, July 17, 2015Pease (The Golden Age of Jewish Achievement, 2009) weighs the concepts of nature and nurture in a quest to explain the many accomplishments of Jewish people over the past 200 years.

The author, a venture capitalist and self-described lapsed Presbyterian, comes again to the topic of Jewish exceptionalism as a Protestant outsider. Indeed, had he been Jewish, parts of this sequel would read like a prolonged boast instead of an unabashed paean to secular Jewry.

Pease explains that he s simply chronicling an undisputable, contemporary phenomenon of achievement. He reprises several facts here to prove it, such as the inordinate number of Jewish Nobel laureates, including such notables as Elie Wiesel and Albert Einstein. But his deeper interest is how and why the globally miniscule Jewish population came to prominence in so many fields, particularly in the United States and among the Ashkenazi.

His goal, he says, is the most complete review of all the significant theories and arguments about why it happened, and he largely accomplishes that here.

This engagingly written commentary draws heavily on contemporary studies on both sides of the nature/nurture debate, as pre-digested by columnists and science writers for the New York Times (particularly columnist David Brooks), the Wall Street Journal, and a short list of other publications. However, scientists rapidly evolving understanding of genetics and advances in epigenetics doom the book s compelling nature portion to a short shelf life.

Pease himself comes down most strongly on the side of nurture, and in the case of Jews, he cites the uplifting effects of an ancient framework that has long emphasized study and learning: I believe the strongest case squarely favors Jewish culture as the most important force behind the performance, he writes, adding that nature/nurture is a false dichotomy, and it s their blending that matters most.

Despite the author s aim to appeal to a wide audience, this book will inevitably hold the greatest appeal for Jewish readers and in others, it may provoke feelings of inferiority.

A cogent, thoughtfully presented synopsis of contemporary research material. --Kirkus Reviews

Wonderful, thoroughly enjoyed reading it By Isaac H The author must be commended for the depth and diverse research presented in this highly readable work.Mr, Pease seemingly has no agenda, and is simply exploring how to extend this unbelievable, in-explainable, completely defying logic, yet undeniable, history of far too out of proportional historical record of achievement of one tiny & scattered nation, to the rest of mankind. He presents, with great clarity, a wealth of opinions, and breakthroughs in modern research in the field of dna, psychology, & most important, epigenetics. His arguments against any simple thinking are most convincing. My one correction to his work would be to set straight his scorn of what he labels as "hareidim", While it can't be denied that in their younger years they are brought up any significant education in 'secular learning', the author fails to recognize that this only because of their great responsibility to achieve a strong foundation in their religion. As is quoted in the book, from Pew Studies, they are what are sustaining the current Jewish numbers - with a horrifying 71% of intermarriage, they are desperately needed! (as this book points out, by the entire world!)Furthermore, the Hareidim must be recognized for the unparalleled value & meaning to life that they give & sustain the entire world with. Who else can logically argue against intermarriage? Abortion? Eugenics? As the author humbly concludes that the search for the right source & explanation is far from over, this critic must suggest an avenue not yet mentioned - the soul. Now thats another book...

In a bit of irony, some 2000 years of Gentile anti-Semitism helped to create a tough, clever and highly intelligent People. Jews have contributed great things to society, disproportionate to their small numbers.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating and Comprehensive By Linda Sawyer Kuhns If possible, I am an even bigger fan of Mr. Pease's second book. The case studies are at least as compelling as the mini-biographies, the latest scientific data staggering, and the conclusions both logical and fair. I usually read two books at once - one for educational content and/or literary excellence, the other to make time pass on the stationary bicycle. This book covers it all.
