I was checking out some books and this book got my attention so I decided to purchase and see for myself if the author could deliver what he wrote and he did. The book is illustrated with chess boards and the positions of the pieces with arrows that show where each piece can move. The author explains what each chess piece can and can't do and also shows a chess board with arrows showing where the piece can move. Playing chess is not that hard after all.

If you are looking for detailed instruction on how to win at chess, you will not find it in this book. However, if you are now to chess, exploring the possibilities of chess, or returning to chess after a long absence (as I am), you might this book a good way to start. It is brief introduction to how each chess pierce moves and the basic strategy of the game. The author suggests that the best way to learn is to play, not read books, and that may not be bad advice.

The Tonton Zola Moukoko of Football Manager books By Amazon Customer Personally I didn't expect much from a book about Football Manager (even though I'm a fan of both the game and football in general). So imagine my surprise when this turned out to be witty, insightful and really rather well put together. In fact, this is great read for football fans in general - whether they play Football Manager or not!

By Mahlon Christensen The Football Manager's guide to football management is just what fans of the FM franchise need to combat The boredom until FM16 is released. Iain Macintosh has written a humorous book you don't have to be a fan of The game to enjoy. The section on player roles and the chapter on transfers will be very helpful to those that play the game.

The Jock. The Brain. The Hustler. The Princess. The Fashionista. The Nerd. Bayside's iconic six vowed to be friends forever. It wasn't even true backstage. So Excited, So Scared delves into the full history of the show and its players, from its unlikely creation and unlikelier success, to what happened when the cameras stopped rolling. Was it a hormonal, dating free-for-all behind the scenes, and was Dustin Diamond really the despised outsider of legend? The centrepiece of Millard's unauthorised trip back to Bayside is a comprehensive, show-by-show breakdown of all 86 episodes. Relive the sociopathic scams of Zack Morris, the story of history's greatest romantic coupling, and memorable guest faces like Maxwell Nerdstrom, Jeff Hunter, and Rod “call me Rod” Belding, plus the scattershot continuity of Malibu Sands and Tori Scott; which evolves into full-on quantum theory; in the most complete take on SBTB ever put to print. With no stone unturned, revisit every classic moment; such as Jessie's freak-out, the rise and fall of Zack Attack, and No Hope with Dope; and discover how a day-glo, nineties teen sitcom become one of the most culturally influential shows of the last thirty years, changing the entire landscape of entertainment along the way. This is a book no Tigers-cheering, chair-straddling Saved by the Bell fan can live without, so c'mon, Preppy; don't be an A.C. Hater.

Bronze medal winner, 2016 Independent Publisher Book Awards (biography)Ina Coolbrith: The Bittersweet Song of California's First Poet Laureateis a new biography about a pioneer poet, Oakland's first publiclibrarian, and the most popular literary ambassador in the earlyAmerican West. In post-Gold Rush San Francisco, she was known as the pearl of her tribe, a tribe that included Bret Harte, Mark Twain, and John Muir. Jack London and Isadora Duncan considered her their literary godmother, and John Greenleaf Whittier knew more of her poems by heart than she did his. Regardless of the acclaim from others, Coolbrith faced a series of challenges throughout her life that tested her devotion to her art. In the end, she put her full faith in poetry and her story reveals the saving grace of creativity in a woman's life.George's deftly told and deeply researched book follows the struggles and triumphs of Coolbrith from her birth in 1841 as a niece of Mormon founder Joseph Smith to her death in 1928 as California's most beloved poet.California crowned Coolbrith its first poet laureate in 1915 during San Francisco's Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and 2015 marks the centennial of her being named America's first state laureate.

Through George’s writing, she incorporates all senses engaging the reader with the sensation of being right there in history. From Ina’s awareness of California nature, to the love of music coupled with her natural ability to write, it is no wonder Coolbrith was a poet. However, the difficulties of being a woman among patriarchal ways of thinking, often her voice was unheard. Writers such as Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Jack London, and Charles Stoddard, although were friends, were among those with whom she had to compete. George also uncovers many secrets in Ina’s life that greatly impacted her efforts to survive in this male domination. Her struggles on this tumultuous trail are a heartfelt story. Aleta George has skillfully captured every moment!Suzanne Bruce, poetFairfield, CA

An intimate look into the relationships and events that shaped a remarkable woman By Keith Skinner I was quickly drawn into this story that begins with fifteen year old Ina Coolbrith attending school for the first time in Los Angeles and being inspired by her discovery of the self-educated poet Edward Pollack. Until then, Ina had been exposed to more classical forms of poetry. “Pollock’s poem was set in a place she knew, and that cracked open a landscape of possibility inside of her. It served as a ‘revelation that poetry was, or could be, written in California.’” That revelation would lead her to write a poem for school that would become the teenager’s first published work.Aleta George spent ten years pouring over newspaper and journal clippings, diaries, literary works, and even Coolbrith’s scrapbook to unearth the quotes, observations and insights that provide an intimate look into the relationships and events that shaped this remarkable woman, one who actively tried to avoid such exposure. The first section of the book recounts Coolbrith’s early life among the Mormons of Illinois (she was the niece of Mormon founder Joseph Smith) and the move west to California. George carefully crafts the material into dramatic stories that, at times, are real nail-biters: the disturbing inner workings of the Mormon community, the tension between the government and an increasingly belligerent Mormon leadership, the fallout from Coolbrith’s first marriage, and the family’s eventual move to San Francisco where they reinvent themselves. It’s in San Francisco that Coolbrith blooms and matures: in notoriety, wit, and ambition. As her reputation as a poet grows, so does her confidence and the texture of her personality. George takes us into living rooms, parlors, and editorial offices where Coolbrith consoles, cajoles, and spars with the likes of Brett Harte, Charles Warren Stoddard, and Mark Twain. Throughout, George weaves exquisite historical detail into the story, rendering 1860s San Francisco as a vivid stage for the narrative. One of my favorite literary scenes was a gathering of writers at the Oakland hills ranch of Adeline Knapp in 1895. From notes taken by a reporter in attendance, we are are allowed to eavesdrop on what became something of a scholarly donnybrook over poetry. After a few lofty statements about it being “the language of the gods,” the hostess proclaims, “[Poets] tear the language from limb to limb in their efforts to express what is inexpressible, unexistent. They give us words, words, words, wrenched from their natural meanings, and arranged in all sorts of unnatural forms…” It’s just one example of the often caustic banter Coolbrith and her contemporaries toss at each other throughout the book.George probes many of Coolbrith’s relationships throughout her life. Being a Charles Keeler fan, I was particularly touched by the accounts of their long, close friendship. Of a collection of her poetry Keeler once wrote, “It may not have been great poetry, but we were sure that it was genuine. It rang true.” But as time passes, we see the relationship between them grow and deepen. Keeler becomes a champion of Coolbrith’s work and later likens her to “a poet with the artistry of an English Tennyson.”As the title suggests, we witness much of Coolbrith’s life wracked with hardship, adversity and loss. At times, she must abandon her art altogether. Speaking of her poetry at one point, she tells her brother, “The bird forgot its notes and the wings their flight.” George does a good job of letting us feel the impact of these personal tragedies without becoming morose. Quite the opposite, we see in Coolbrith a resilience and determination to survive. In the preface, George tells us, “Writing a biography is an intimate affair. I love spending time with Coolbrith…” Further on, she continues, “She loved California and worked to capture its natural beauty in language, something that I also strive for in my work.” We see that dynamic in play in George’s prose which is finely turned yet unobtrusive throughout. It is her enthusiasm and affection for Coolbrith and California that gives this biography its vitality and crystal clear resonance.

Bittersweet Song Indeed By Wallace Ravven A deep and sensitive portrait of a passionate, sometimes tortured artist -- America’s first state Poet Laureate. With a rich historical perspective and respect for the creative spirit, Aleta George uncovers the joy and tumult of a poet who often struggled and sometimes thrived in the rapidly changing new world of California’s artistic awakening. A woman we would today call a feminist artist, Ina Coolbrith, was friend and likely intimate of Mark Twain and Bret Harte, and a mentor to Jack London, Isadora Duncan and Mary Austin. This book shine new light on a champion of the west coast’s raw beauty.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Expect the unexpected By Deedles This book was not AT ALL what I expected. Actually, I'm not really sure what I expected. But I know this was not it.I've read some of Ms. Thalassa's other books, and her female leads tend to be a bit on the sassy and snarky side, but Angel takes the cake. Seriously, I choked on my gum, I was laughing so hard. I mean, being a superhero is rough, so I guess you need a little sass to get you through the day.The Executioner, or X, as he's called. He's a supervillian with a heart, if that makes sense. He kills people with his touch, so his life has been pretty lonely. But all that changes when he realizes he can touch Angel and not kill her. His whole psyche changes after that, and I felt myself grinning with giddiness to see these two work out their issues. Honestly, I didn't know how Ms. Thalassa would do it, because it seemed so impossible. But this author sure has some tricks up her sleeve!Yeah, yeah, I know. Superhero romance book. BUT seriously! Read it! Because...well, yeah. Just do it.

Have I?I'm a romance girl, but if there's some *sskickin' action in there, I'm all for it.Laura Thalassa had me from the first page, where Angel explained the inadequacies of her tight superhero outfit with no pockets for her phone. She jabs it into her cleavage, and from then and on the story straight out skyrockets. At breakneck speed, I'm introduced to the hero.Wait. Villain.Wait...?And he's hot as all get-out, dangerous as sh*t, and freaking just—straight out delicious; did I hear "Book Boyfriend from the roams of superheroes-slash-villains?" Or I could just say, in the words of Twitter: #alltheloveA last warning for the weak of heart: there isn't just some *sskickin' action involved. No. There's a hell-of-alot of *sskickin' action involved, and man is it worth it. To get to that end? That beautiful, awesome, my-kind-of end? I was in heaven while holding my breath through it all.

If I could afford to I would purchase it and just give it away. My favorite poem is The Crucifixion. I pray that she continues the course God has placed her on.

Boston Private Investigator James Hillton doesn’t carry a gun, just a load of BS in. . . DOUBLE ENDORSEMENT VIRGINIA DOYLE IS convinced her connection to an insurance fraud scheme has led to something she’d never bargained for — murder! Now she wants to come clean and it’s up to swish Boston attorney Madeleine V. LaCroix and her colleague, James P. Hillton, an off-the-cuff Army veteran turned private investigator, to prove Doyle innocent. But, more bloodshed, extortion, unshakable alibis, a groovy professor, a by-the-book insurance investigator, and a religious fanatic all seem to conspire to thwart the investigation. Double Endorsement is an original suspense novel, which #1 New York Times best-seller Robin Moore says, “Grips the reader’s attention from start to finish.” COMBINING LEGAL KNOWLEDGE and splendid wit, Andrew McAleer, who himself served as a criminal defense attorney, prosecutor, and Army Sergeant, spins a genuine tale of mystery and suspense — both in plot and character!

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Series with Potential By Elizabeth There is a tinge of MOONLIGHTING about this second novel in Mr. McAleer's PI series, the result of introducing a blond bombshell who at first glance appears to personify the cliche. Whether Sophia Blossom will turn out in subsequent installments to be more than she appears remains to be seen. This book makes no pretense of being anything other than entertainment. The dialogue is snappy and silly and lots of fun, the mystery sufficiently convoluted and the pacing adequate to keep the reader engaged. No one wallows in despair or self-analysis, and the characters are as quirky as this kind of fiction requires. The main drawback of the work is that it definitely would have benefited from the services of a competent editor. Various misspellings and grammar stumbles aside, the plot gapes in several places. A partial explanation of one such--the question of how our hero and his intrepid assistant managed to masquerade as grad students--does arise later but not in a way that is satisfactory. It certainly doesn't speak well of James Hilton's talent for subterfuge. This series has considerable potential, as Mr. McAleer has a deft hand with the kind of dialogue that makes it work. His characters are amusing, and his economical writing style doesn't bog the reader down. Hopefully, he'll find a good editor for book three.

By A Customer NEW YORK TIMES bestseller of THE FRENCH CONNECTION, Robin Moore, calls Andrew McAleer's DOUBLE ENDORSEMENT "An intricate and original private eye mystery. Andrew McAleer's DOUBLE ENDORSEMENT grips the reader's attention from start to finish and is one of the most humorous novels I've read in a long, long time. A wit and pace reminiscent of P.G. Wodehouse." And I think Moore is right on target. Rex Stout fans will particularly take delight in this mystery novel. Enjoy!

I love well-written series infused with humor and wit. Double Endorsement is not only a delight to read, but zooms along at a Nascar pace. From the clever PI to his able colleague to the blonde babe who lights up the pages, the characters lend sizzle and flash. A yummy treat, I'm looking forward to the author's next outing.

Alice`s Adventures in Arkansas By Sarah Phipps Alice`s wrestling escapades with the prickly tea party political view point puts a razar edge to the preposterous shift in the wayward wiles of where the rules are set. She has turned it into the laughing stock of a read.
