"off the path and straight into the woods", by C. L. Martin

About the Author Probably just like you, the author draws from all manner of life experiences and sensory input to become who they are, including how they communicate. Simply doing only that and then endeavoring to include a few of the multiple layers that reside in every thought and conversation, the author seems to have stumbled upon a written word style that reveals more subtleties to any basic story with a little keener focus and effort in writing them out in a manner that creates multiple reads. That is the unique poetry of C.L. Martin.

The New York Times bestseller from the beloved author of A Three Dog Life—an exhilarating, superbly written memoir on friendship, family, creativity, tragedy, and the richness of life: “If you only read one book this year, make it this one” (Ann Patchett). In her bestselling memoir A Three Dog Life, Abigail Thomas wrote about the devastating loss of her husband. In What Comes Next and How to Like It, “a keenly observed memoir…Thomas writes of the changes aging brings us all and of coping through love: of family, dogs, a well-turned phrase. She is superb company” (People). Thomas was startled to overhear herself described as “a nice old lady with a tattoo,” because she thinks of herself as not nice, not old, nor a lady. But she has wondered: what comes next? What comes after the death of a spouse? What form does a lifelong friendship take after deepest betrayal? How does a mother cope with her child’s dire illness? Or the death of a cherished dog? And how to like it? How to accept, appreciate, enjoy? How to find solace and pleasure? How to sustain and be sustained by our most trusted, valuable companions? At its heart, What Comes Next and How to Like It is about the complicated friendship between Thomas and a man she met thirty-five years ago—a rich bond that has lasted through marriages, child-raising, and the vicissitudes and tragedies of life. “After all,” she writes, “there are those people we love, and then there are those we recognize. These are the unbreakable connections.” Exquisitely observed, lush with sentences you will read over and over again, What Comes Next and How to Like It “is a beautifully felt, deeply moving memoir, the best work yet by a woman who has already done some of the best work in the field. Abigail Thomas is the Emily Dickinson of memoirists, and so much of this book’s wisdom is between the lines and in the white spaces. It may only take you two days to read, but the impact will stay with you for a long, long time” (Stephen King). This is a glorious guide to living imperfectly and exuberantly.

What Comes Next and How to Like It: A Memoir, by Abigail Thomas

Review "What Comes Next and How to Like It is a beautifully felt, deeply moving memoir, the best work yet by a woman who has already done some of the best work in the field. It's about friendship, and the shocks friendship can endure when it's true and deep. It's about the rueful pleasures (not to mention the jarring pitfalls) of getting old. It's about enduring tragedy, sickness, and loss. Thomas speaks of these big things by scattering the ordinary jewelry of everyday life: loving dogs (even when they chew your most precious possessions), Googling old boyfriends, rescuing an orphan mouse, and trees that try to grow in the crack between boards. Small speaks for large here, in a calm voice that talks to the mind while it fills the heart. Abigail Thomas is the Emily Dickinson of memoirists, and so much of this book's wisdom is between the lines and in the white spaces. It may only take you two days to read, but the impact will stay with you for a long, long time. Abigail Thomas fills memory with living breath." (Stephen King)"This may be the most honest book I've ever read, by one of the most beautiful writers I know-- dizzyingly truthful, often funny, lyrical, wise." (Anne Lamott)"I would follow Abigail Thomas on any journey she ever takes. The arrival of a new book from this master is always a cause for celebration, because I know right away that I'm about to learn something important about the art of writing and the art of living, both. I come to her books as though to a feast, and leave fulfilled and transformed." (Elizabeth Gilbert)"This episodic memoir is full of love and life. Readers will identify with the feelings and the people even as they realize how different they are, how wondrous." (Eloise Kinney Booklist)“Bighearted…frank and funny andunpretentious…[Thomas’s] gratitude and amazement abound.” (Catherine Newman More)“A former book editor and memoirist's accountof the remarkable 35-year friendship that sustained her through the trials andtribulations of adult life…A moving andeloquent memoir.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Irreverent, wise, and boundlessly generous." (Elissa Schappell Vanity Fair)"Infused with [Thomas’s] signature sense of mordancy and wit…. all about depth offeeling, the experience of being a mother and a friend…its disparate piecesfall into exquisite place." (David Ulin Los Angeles Times)“Full of love, humor, anger and a certain amount of uncertainty…. Although most of these passages are very short and read almost like journal entries, the overall picture Thomas conveys is that of the deep, soul-level relationships that exist between her and her family and with Chuck, connections that make all the highs and lows of life livable." (Lee E. Cart Shelf Awareness)“A keenly observed memoir…[Thomas] writes of the changes aging brings us all and of coping through love: of family, dogs, a well-turned phrase. She is superb company." (People Magazine)"Beautifully written...wry...resilient. Her mature bones may not be all that flexible but her topics and sentences flip and cartwheel with the greatest of ease." (Maureen Corrigan Fresh Air)“What Comes Next and How to Like It is the story ofhow Abigail Thomas manages to survive all the beauty and sadness life has givenher. If you only read one book this year, make it this one.” (Ann Patchett)"I want to grow oldthe way Abigail Thomas is growing old — with grace and wit, humor and honesty, dogs and dear friends. What Comes Next and How to Like It is plain-spoken and wise. Thomas's chapters are brief (some just a paragraph, none longer than three pages), but they feel complete and full. She says what she means and no more. (But she says it beautifully.)” (Laurie Hertzel Minneapolis Star Tribune)"A nearly unforgivable betrayal in the middle of [a] long friendship somehow didn’t end it… and it’s this spirit of stalwart love and loyalty that makes Thomas’s work so moving... The result is a book that reads very quickly, but lingers long after." (Kate Tuttle Boston Globe)“Abigail Thomas knows adversity and how to make some kind of joy out of it… a meditation on aging and family that brings to mind Anne Lamott or Anna Quindlen… her gift is to never ponder too long on life’s woes." (Nora Krug The Washington Post)“Hilarious, wise, generous…full of interesting places and people and art and feeling and moment and thought." (Dinah Lenney Los Angeles Review of Books)“[Thomas] is in total control of the narrative even when she feels that she’s not—a string of tragedies pieced together with undeterred grace.…each scene feels fresh and alive.” (Alex Layman Kirkus Reviews)“Thomas has another winner with WHAT COMES NEXT AND HOW TO LIKE IT… a rich, multifaceted portrait of the author’s daily life in Woodstock, New York, with her beloved dogs. She is both forthright and self-deprecatingly funny … readers will treasure this journey with a writer who comes across as a compelling, lively friend." (Alice Cary Bookpage)“Beautiful… Thomas writes arrestingly about the trials and gifts of friendship What Comes Next and How to Like It is ultimately about how to live with the hand one is dealt: its disappointments and surprises, the grief and the grace... The result is a thing of beauty, largely owing to the author’s utter fearlessness in the face of the unexpected.” (The Economist)“The astonishingly rhapsodic What Comes Next and How to Like It is this master stylist's best work yet…One of the many gifts of What Comes Next is the news Thomas brings us from the front lines of old age, peppery and witty, neither romanticized nor denied." (Meredith Maran Chicago Tribune)

About the Author Abigail Thomas, the daughter of renowned science writer Lewis Thomas (The Lives of a Cell), is the mother of four children and the grandmother of twelve. She is the author of six previous books, including the memoir A Three Dog Life, which was named one of the best books of 2006 by the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post. She teaches writing and lives in Woodstock.

22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Mistress of White Space By Nancy Rossman This newest memoir is like SAFEKEEPING in format and style. However, deeply etched with personal feelings: love, trust, betrayal, anger and last (most important) forgiveness. We have all been there in some form. And the hurt from a family member is hardest to accept and then recover from in order to get to discussion in all forms of "what happened." Often with humor, one of Abby's greatest gifts.Abigail Thomas has the ability to cross boundaries without alienation. She uses her background as editor, agent, and finally writer and teacher to spin this analysis and reflection of life in general. Not preachy, but challenging thoughts about our mortality, our weaknesses, the limited time we have, and what's most important along the way as we all take the journey. If you are not ready to do the work, as in fill in the blanks of all the 'white space,' this won't be for you. But if you have loved her other work, and have been up to the challenge of thinking after these snippets of incredibly tight writing, you will also love this. And thus, what I mean by you, as the reader, need to fill in all the white space with your own consideration.Years in the making. Years in the thinking. Years of crying, crumpling up pages, and then thinking some more of "how to find the way into the story" (a favorite expression of the author) and it was worth the wait. I highly recommend this especially to those of us over sixty.

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. memoir on life & growing older By Rumeur This book is actually written in the way that when I see a book categorized as a memoir--it's in this wayThe author writes in little snippets, almost like a diary but not dated, they're titledShe writes about good times, bad, jobs , family, aging, many many topics but what stands out most is her 30+ year friendship with Chuck. He's mentioned in most all the stories, yet they remain friends through everything. There was a period in time they had their little "spat" but they managed to get past that too, by sitting & talking like the adults they were , & their friendship eventually came backShe also puts stories of her glass painting in between her life happening stories & I believe they're well placed as to how she's feeling at time of the stories. She's not only creative as a writer, but also loves to paint. Loves her family , & her dogs but writes that she's not sure she could share her life again with a man living with her. She seems very content with the way her life has gone & although there were illnesses, animosities, fights, general bad times --she was able to see through it all & take something from all her experiences both good & badRecommend this book if you enjoy memoirs, a fast read but also a very deep read, considering the stories are short. The length of the stories might easily be read, but it's sometimes more about what she may not have written in that story!! Well put togetherThank you to Simon & Schuster/Scribner for the contest giveaway!

She gently and fiercely draws us into her beautiful and painful world, making us nod in agreement like of course we understand, because she is talking about everyone’s life on earth. She casts a remarkably wide net with her attention to the daily details of life and death. Read this book.

By Matteo This book provides a quick walkthrough to vRealize Orchestrator(most of the book content will be still be useful to users of vSphere 5.5) showing what to do to set it up and to create your first automation workflows. Orchestrator documentation is kinda scarce so if you plan to set it up you should give this book a shot!

Great tutorial to get acquainted and start productive work with vRO By Stefan As reviewer of this book and a complete novice to Orchestrator, this book turned out to be the ideal introduction to this topic that I ever wanted to dive into but never had the time for. Without consuming much time, it quickly leads to productive and motivating results. It is much more useful than any other introduction to this topic (including tutorials by VMware).Especially, I like chapter 6 where you get a very good and practical introduction into JavaScript.

We live in a world that's very different from the one in which Emily Post came of age. Many of us who are nice (but who also sometimes say "f*ck") are frequently at a loss for guidelines about how to be a good person who deals effectively with the onslaught of rudeness we all encounter. To lead us through this this miasma of modern manners, syndicated columnist Amy Alkon - The Advice Goddess - gives us a new set of manners for our 21st-century lives. In chapters titled "The Telephone", "The Internet", "The Apology", and "Communicating", among others, Alkon maps out new rules that go beyond what fork to use to answer real questions we all have:

  • When is it okay to phone somebody instead of emailing or texting? When is it rude?
  • Why shouldn't you tweet about a guest at a private dinner party? Everybody knows privacy is dead, right?
  • How do you shut the guy up in the pharmacy line with his cellphone on speaker?
  • When is it right to approach somebody who's crying in public and when is it right to leave him alone?
  • When should you unfriend somebody on Facebook and what do you say when she calls you on it?
  • If you have an STD, when do you tell people, what do you say, and do you have to contact everyone you've ever had sex with?

Real advice for today with more than a touch of humor, Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck is destined to give good old Emily a shove off the etiquette shelf (if that's not too rude to say).

24 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Good information for a world of better people By R. Manhard I doubt anyone is expecting a standard guide to etiquette when they see a title like this and they'd be right. But this makes so much more sense as a guide to etiquette in the connected world. This book is just groaning with good advice livened by both Amy's personal anecdotes and her research into the psychological background of the personal interactions of modern life. She will use a charmingly old-fashioned word like "masher" in reference to a possible Facebook creep and then use a wonderfully modern 'mot juste' like "moochspam" in reference to people trying to hit up their entire contact list for some crowd funding project. The book is laid out in highly digestible bites but is also engaging and amusing enough to reward deep draughts as well (to mix a consuming metaphor). This a book for anyone and everyone. Those [people who say "f*ck" all the time and those who never do. Reading this book will make you a better person and since I have to live in a world with you, I tell you: buy this book!

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Smart, funny, interesting on every page By Adam F I thought this book was terrific. It's really much more than a manners book. It was almost like a guide to better living. You just feel like you know how to be a slightly better person when you finish each section. The premise that we're being rude because humans have spent most of our history in tribes of 150 people and our brains aren't accustomed to huge cities rang totally true to me.And I laughed on almost every page. On random friends who hit you up for money on Kickstarter: "He contacted me to ask me to pay into his Kickstarter fund to finance the distribution of some indie film he’d made. My response: “I would like to get a new pair of boots. Please send me $200 via PayPal.”On talking with the person next to you on a plane: "Even when a seatmate seems open to chatting, you should look for signs suggesting his openness has closed, such as fidgeting or a little trickle of blood coming from his ear."I'd post a bunch more but Amazon is being a real prude about curse words!Great read, great science, full of life tips that are actually interesting, and funny throughout. I also think it would make a fun, cheeky gift to give a friend who's a bit of an a-hole...I have several in mind...

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Read this book if you want to enhance your every day life and interactions. By Patricia buckley After reading Advice Goddess in my local paper and noticing the author's email address, I took the liberty of telling the author how hilarious her advice was. Amy Alkon has an ability to say what is on her mind in such a way that the reader sees the world in a whole new way. She has an educated understanding of psychology and technology coupled with a warm embrace of humanity. After buying "Good Manners" which I thoroughly enjoyed from cover to cover, I realized that the behavior of certain people upsets each one of us but the majority of us just walk away. As an activist for preventing further actions that cause misery to others, Amy differentiates from most people. She is a champion in this regard and takes action. We need more people in the world to step up to the plate and say or do something when slighted or offended.

Man has theorised that if you put a hundred monkeys in a room with typewriters, they will eventually by law of averages write the works of Shakespeare. This book was created in much the same way. Ada Dickey and Kevin Crew have worked some pretty crummy jobs in their respective histories, and as such are always on the lookout for the next brilliant get-rich-quick schemes. In this book, they share with you some of their latest ideas for making money where others fear to tread. From the delights of Canned Vomit to the horrors of Animal Slippers, via the craziness of such jobs as Sleeping Bag Buddy or Farm Fluffer, here is the definitive list of occupations you never knew you needed! Both equal parts offensive and informative, within days of buying this book you could be making a fortune tapping an unrecognised financial market! Alternatively, you might be under arrest. Either way. you’ve paid for this book so the authors don’t really care. Good Luck!

About the Author Ada Dickey lives in a fictional world and drives around in a VW bus. Touring the country with her cats and Siamese fighting fish, she only stops long enough to visit friends and upload her next book via Wi-Fi. Her “geek erotica” and other writings can be found on Amazon.com. Kevin Crew is a professional chef and unprofessional writer who lives in self-imposed exile on a small island off of the south coast of England. Here he spends his days alternating between cooking hearty feasts for local farmers and walking the beaches, muttering to himself and throwing sticks at gulls. He has worked with people from every walk of life, and based on his experiences now prefers to spend most of his time with his collection of snakes. He lives with his long-suffering wife Emily and their two children.

It will make you laugh so much that you will spit out your coffee and also cause you to want to vomit up your breakfast. Yet in the end you will find it an incredibly enjoyable read that will most definitely raise your spirits!Ada and Kevin are eloquent writers with, as they put "a questionable sense of humour" that they share with you in the form of ideas for business ventures I am sure most of us never thought could make us money! They share with you some terms that you may never have heard before, and coin some new ones that I personally would like to toss around in conversation, such as my want to call stupid people "ass apples" now. There are some chapters of the book that will make you bust out laughing, to where the person sitting near you on the bus will question your mental stability and others that are very difficult to read without getting nauseous to the point where having a trash can near by just in case is a good idea. If someone can make you do both of those things in a span of seconds then I think their book needs to be shared!Sincerely though, with the depressing news and daily frustrations we all go through, this book is a bit of joy that will make you smile and not take life so seriously after reading it. And that is a gift we all need!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Written in wonderfully bad taste... By Wendy Callahan This book is no joke. (OK, that was a pun, because it's April Fool's Day, and... um... Right.)So I am going to confess now that I love lowbrow humor. It might even be a not-so-secret fact that I love fart jokes. Knowing Kevin's style of writing (via his blog, Social Assassin), I couldn't resist trying this book. The authors do not disappoint in the inappropriate humor sector. As promised, their ideas are horrifyingly hilarious. Each money-making scheme is really just a thinly-veiled reason to behave like a complete sociopath. This book takes everything you should never, ever do and plays Devil's advocate, justifying these awful deeds.Drowning kittens? Excellent way to rid your neighborhood of those little nighttime yowlers that keep everyone awake. Found fresh road kill? Don't let it go to waste - grill it and share it with everyone! I actually considered trying to implement a few of them... but then decided I didn't need money quite that desperately. Still, some of these ideas do look surprisingly viable, such as teaching people how to insult others with British slang. This book is unapologetically rude, intentionally imperfect, and the cover, art, and writing style reminiscent of a 1970's or 1980's info-pamphlet by trans-Atlantic collaborators. So if you need an inappropriate giggle or a break from political correctness, check it out. If bad taste is your cup of tea, this will be delicious.

When I first saw the title, it reminded of a similarly titled bad humor book that I read in my teens back in the eighties. This book far surpasses that book in its bad humor. But, it is good bad humor. While I could not help but shouting out loud, “Man that’s sick,” I still found myself chuckling and snorting all the way through the book.

About the Author To list Isaac Asimov's honors, as to list his books, would be excessive. Let it simply be noted that Isaac Asimov was the most famous, most honored, most widely read, and most beloved science fiction author of all time. In his five decades as an author, he wrote more than four hundred books, won every award his readers and colleagues could contrive to give him, and provided pleasure and insight to millions. He died in 1992, still at work.

Epic By Thomas Wikman The Foundation trilogy (three first books) and the Foundation series (all seven) are often regarded as the greatest set of Science Fiction literature ever produced. The Foundation series won the one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. Isaac Asimov was among the world's best authors, an accomplished scientist, and he was also a genius with an IQ above 170, and it shows in the intelligently concocted but complex plots and narrative. There are already 331 reviews for this Science Fiction novel, however, I still believe I have something unqiue to contribute which is stated in my last paragraph. This book and the rest in the series take place far in the future (allegedly 50,000 years) at a time when people live throughout the Galaxy. A mathematician Hari Seldon has developed a new branch of mathematics known as psychohistory. Using the law of mass action, it can roughly predict the future on a large scale. Hari Seldon predicts the demise of the Galactic Empire and creates a plan to save the knowledge of the human race in a huge encyclopedia and also to shorten the barbaric period expected to follow the demise from 30,000 years to 1,000 years. A select people are chosen to write the Encyclopedia and to unknowingly carry out the plan to re-create the Galactic Empire. What unfolds in this book and in the books that follow is the future history of the demise and re-emergence of a Galactic Empire, written as a series of adventures, in a similar fashion to the Star Wars series.Even though this is arguably the greatest set of Science Fiction novels ever written, I do not recommend it to those who are only mildly interested in Science Fiction. Character development is not the focus of these novels and the large amount of technical/scientific details, schemes and plots can become both confusing and heavy for the unitiated Science Fiction reader. If you read this one you will feel the need to read the others which may take a long time. If you are new to Science Fiction start with something lighter and when you are hooked you can continue with this series. Also, in my opinion the second and third books were better than the first.

Callen This review is specifically of the Kindle edition, published by Ballantine/Bantam.The Foundation Trilogy is a wonderful piece of work, but the Kindle edition butchers it! Someone has decided to water down Asimov's prose, eliminating some of the more enjoyable passages of the book. Here are some examples, found by comparison with an old Bantam Doubleday hardcover edition.Several pages into chapter 3, Salvor Hardin is arguing with the Encyclopedists about the decline of the Empire.Original: "If you ask me,", he cried, "THE GALAXY IS GOING TO POT!"Kindle: "If you ask me,", he cried, "THE GALACTIC EMPIRE IS DYING!"In chapter 5, Hardin is again meeting with the Encyclopedists and discussing the threat received from Anacreon.Original: The message from Anacreon ... boils down easily and straightforwardly to the unqualified statement ... "You give us what we want in a week, or we beat the hell out of you and take it anyway."Kindle: The message from Anacreon ... boils down easily and straightforwardly to the unqualified statement ... "You give us what we want in a week, or we take it by force."I'm going to be asking for a refund.

This series is science fiction on a grand scale. When you keep in mind that this story originated in 1951, it is easy to see how much Star Trek, Star Wars and yes even Heinlein's & Clarke's later works borrowed from these ideas.Anyway, Asimov at his best was a creator; he had amazing ideas of the universe, how it worked, and how to structure stories that manipulated the readers expectations. The Foundation series is like a spider web that continues to become more intricate and complex with each chapter. The intricacy of the plotting is amazing, although honestly it's not self-evident in the first few stories of the first novel, given that they were published independantly, as serialized short stories told one at a time.Only with the second book did this change. The basic premise: The rise and fall of the roman empire, told on a galactic scale from a historian living in the 2nd empire a thousand years later. The setup: One man creates a science, called Psychohistory, a fictional precursor to Chaos Math (a real statistical science today). This psychohistorian, Hari Seldon, predicted that the vast Galactic Empire is about to crumble, dropping humanity back into the dark ages. This dark ages was due to last 30,000 years (I believe), and while it is too late to prevent this horrible breakdown of society, Seldon believes he can use this new math to shorten the time period between empires. To do so, he establishes two "Foundations" made up of scientists, one at the outer edge of the galaxy, and the other at "Star's End". In advance, Seldon plots out the future (using the math of psychohistory), and sets in motion a series of "domino" events. The Foundation faces crises and problems, forcing change in both strategy and focus for the next several hundred years. But Asmimov continues to modulate the story throughout each of the books, and building upon the previously-understood structure. In fact, once you think you've read enough permutations on the same idea, Asimov starts tearing the structure down, introducing variables into the story that further complicate matters.A caveat about the most often-touted complaint about Asimov: His writing style (or lack thereof):In 1951, when these stories were first published, Asimov was not a great writer - as in, a writer of literature. His descriptions, characterizations and storytelling technique all left a lot to be desired. His technique got better with the passing years, such that any of his fiction written after 1970 or so reads easily. But that is not the point, here. Asimov didn't create great characters (save for his robot stories) - he came up with mind-bending ideas and subsequent permutations. The litmus test of whether or not Asimov is for you: Read 'The Last Question'. It's a 12-page short story. Not brilliantly written, but a fantastic story with amazing ideas contained inside. When you get to the last sentence of it, you will probably be blown away. If you are, Foundation is for you.Read them - and commit to all of them, because they get better as they go, generally speaking. The first three were written in 1950 - 53. But the fans demanded that he someday continue the story, so he continued with a fourth book in 1983, and the last in 1986. Some complain that the last book is overlong - and I agree - but the last sentence of the last book is...amazing.The books:FoundationFoundation and EmpireSecond Foundation (contains the best story - Search By The Mule)Foundation's Edge (best overall book)Foundation and EarthAfterward, Asimov went back and wrote prequel novels (Prelude to Foundation, Foundation's End) taking place prior to and concurrently with events from the first book. He later admitted that he wrote prequels because the main story had gotten so complicated, he felt he'd taken the story as far as it could go.The prequels aren't too bad, but they are completely non-essential.

Chambers writing as Val St. Crowe Nora Sparrow believes Owen Asher wants to protect her. But then he succeeds, and they are flung back into Helicon, where she is expected to do nothing but create and inspire. Except Owen never did mean to protect her. Instead, he only wants to control her, to possess her. He sees it as love, but he is twisted and broken in a way she never realized. He wants to control Helicon too. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining, with a few grammar issues. By Jennifer Woo Overall, this is an entertaining series. I would recommend it to older teens and twenty-somethings who are very open-minded. It includes some pretty graphic sex scenes, both heterosexual and homosexual. The style is very teen-oriented, but the sex scenes bump it up. My biggest issue with the series is the grammar errors. If you are a grammar Nazi (like I admit I am), this will annoy the heck out of you. For example, there are at least a dozen places where the author uses the word less when she should have used fewer ("There were less and less people feeding them less and less magic.") I very much enjoyed the universe she created and enjoyed the books enough that I purchased book 5 in the series as well.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. hard to love By Stacey Harper I really wanted to like this more but i really struggled with these novels, the character development is a little off and is just written in as 'they don't know any better' the constant looping to the same threats and the long periods of angst for the teenage characters which are never really resolved and merely glossed over most of the time. I think my review is going much the books and rambling so i'm going to finish here

From one of Europe’s most prominent and celebrated poets, a collection remarkable for its graceful lyricism. With acute irony tempered by a generous curiosity, Szymborska documents life’s improbability as well as its transient beauty to capture the wonder of existence. Preface by Mark Strand. Translated by Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Cavanagh, winners of the PEN Translation Prize.

View with a Grain of Sand: Selected Poems, by Wislawa Szymborska

Amazon.com Review True, the gentlemen of the Swedish Academy have made more than their share of bloopers. But when they bestowed the Nobel Prize upon Wislawa Szymborska in 1996, they got it right, rescuing a major poet from minor obscurity. Two previous collections of her work had appeared in English, of course. Yet View with a Grain of Sand is by far the best introduction to the Polish writer, conveying not only the fantastic lightness of her touch but the entire worlds she manages to pack into, as it were, a grain of sand. Miniscule wonders are her specialty, such as the tableau she records in "Miracle Fair": "The usual miracle: / invisible dogs barking / in the dead of night. / One of many miracles: / a small and airy cloud / is able to upstage the massive moon." Yet Szymborska is also a love poet of peculiar tartness:

True love. Is it really necessary? Tact and common sense tell us to pass over it in silence, like a scandal in Life's highest circles. Perfectly good children are born without its help. It couldn't populate the planet in a million years, it comes along so rarely.

What comes along so rarely, in fact, is a writer of this quality--and a translation that does her justice. Szymborska's brilliance would probably overpower even a second-rate rendering into English. But thanks to the efforts of Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Cavanagh, she is not only brilliant but supremely readable--an intellectual comedian for whom "there's nothing more debauched than thinking."

By A Customer Ahh... where do I begin to explain why I admire, adore, and revel in Szymborska's poetry? It all began in roughly 1996-97 when I learned that this Polish poet, previously unbeknown to me, had been awarded the Nobel Prize. While I don't consider the Swedish Academy to be the ultimate authority on good literature and count only several of the previous prize winners among my favorite authors (Solzhenitsyn, Pasternak, O'Neill to name a few), I anticipated that an encounter with her poetry is bound to be special. The brief biographical sketches I then read and her photograph emitted wisdom, modesty, and wit. Or at least that what I think I must have sensed at the moment. In any case, after reading several of Szymborska's poems on-line (at a wonderful site called 'Poems from the Planet Earth') I was irrevocably enamored with her verses. Since then I have read and reread them on occasions too numerous to be counted, and I've read them to friends and strangers.I find that Szymborska writes with great clarity, never failing to gracefully walk the fine line between excessive (hmm..) eloquence and ascetic laconism. Her metaphors and characterizations are incredibly precise, and her poetry is rich with aphorisms. At the same time, it has somewhat of a haiku-like quality. Whether writing of grand and global matters or of minute things and creatures she is critical yet humane, and -- very genuine. The poems are sharp and witty but never cynical. Simply put, Szymborska's work is sheer brilliance from a poet with love for the human and the inanimate.I wonder whether the paperback scheduled for release this autumn will contain new poems... On a final note -- all translations I have had the privelege to read (Maguire, Baranczak, Cavanagh) are marvelous -- an occurence that is very unusual, and, hence, very precious.

Another praise, from a younger reader By Shu This book was and still is my first poetry book; not because I haven't read anyone else's, but it's the first compilation that I was really willing to pay the often outrageous prices for. (LOL) I am not an avid poetry reader, nor am I familiar with the current favorite contemporary poets, but I find that she really does succinctly portray "life's improbability as well as its transient beauty" quite well.As a younger reader , I do have a bit of a problem identifying with the poetry that she writes pre-1972 (that is, the first few sections before the 'Could Have' section), because I don't really know much about it. As a note though, I probably should say that 'Nothing Twice,' which is about the probabilities of chance, from the pre-1972 section has been a real gem. Anyhow, the travelogues, the places, the books are things that frankly, I'd ask my parents and they probably wouldn't know either, or know very little about. I suppose if I researched enough, I would have no trouble understanding her message, but the stuff I really bought this book for was the pro-1972 sections. I can identify the issues because they're fairly general knowledge and have a certain mocking humor to some of them, but the words do just pull you in. The poems are addressed to one, and to all, and you feel like you're part of the whole. There are instances in which you feel like she's writing about you and the instances you've gone through, and that's what makes you feel amazed at the depth of understanding she has on these matters.I first discovered her poetry in my high school English class and was surprised to find this book as the only book available in my favorite bookstore (and costing almost triple the cost of a volume of poetry that must have been 600 pages long, with of course long-dead, long-cherished poets). Oh, wait--I did find another book containing her work (that I don't remember the name of) but I bought this one because there were simply more poems that I liked. After a month or two of muddling around and waiting for the price drop (which it didn't), I just gave up and bought it. I can't say that I've regretted that decision.And...if you still have trouble deciding, the Nobel Prize for Literature she won should be more than enough of a pull to help you decide. It wasn't as much of a deciding factor for me, but it's always nice to know that somewhere in the depths of the blackhole that is my room, I actually have nobel prize literature that I understand and can recommend to others...My favorite poems from her have been 'Could Have,' 'The Onion,' 'Discovery,' 'True love,' 'Under One Small Star,' 'Pi,' of course 'View with a grain of Sand' because of wordplay, but I find that every time I re-read it, I uncover more about the poems and so that favorites list keeps on getting longer and longer. It may sound a little strange, but I keep it with me when I travel for long periods of time away from home and turn to it when I have that rare solitary moment to really think about life and what its inner workings are because it just gives such a realistic criticism that you sort of go...wow. Never really thought about it like that before.

I - who some might consider uneducated - am curious about what is experienced, within us and without us, in life. Still, I find a lot of poetry difficult to understand since an education from Oxford or Harvard seems a requirment to get through it. This wasn't the case with the poems in this book. I'm able to digest much of the words and pharses in Szymborska's poetry which evoke different images, feelings and thoughts as easily as reading fictional prose. I even had shivers sent through my body reading a poem in this book. This existential jolt happens only rarely and only when I listen to music which affects me deeply. This is poetry I can appreciate.

Ada-Emilia Valmori was my daughter who died through negligence on the eleventh of June 2011. I stood in the shadow of her life; watched my daughter as she faded away within three weeks. They who controlled the winds, are the ghost makers! He who threw tissue at the deceased, row the boats; They captained the planes of death! Ada-Emilia's blood is a stain all over their palms! they can try and wash their hands thousands of times daily, their hands would never be cleaned! my voice may not be as loud as thunder's storms; nor as oceans waves; but no matter how much, they will try to thwart; the voice of my silenced through me would be heard

Poetry. Women's Studies. African American Studies. Native American Studies. With lyric and narrative language OCCOQUAN maps the lives of nineteenth century slaves and of women who championed the twentieth century struggle for the right to vote. The protagonists include incarcerated, hunger-striking suffragists, a sadistic workhouse warden, a bohemian journalists reporting on women of the Russian revolution, an anarchist who may become a saint, the brilliant suffragists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. OCCOQUAN's compass enables us to journey through all these and back to the river's indomitable wilderness. "I admire Gary Worth Moody's work for its long, haunting lines, for its connection to the historic record, for its humanity, and for its ambition. His connection to Black Mountain poets is present on the ranging fields of his pages and also his concerns with deep geography—here the remaining imprints of slavery and feminist struggles. This poet ignites words with fire. In reading Occoquan, I enter timeless conflagrations of events. This book is a live ember."—Denise Low, Kansas Poet Laureate 2007-09, author of MÉLANGE BLOCK

It really goes into detail of how to make the best use of your Amazon Echo. Before reading it I had very little knowledge of how to leverage all the apps and voice command capabilities. But after reading this guide I know exactly what I have to do and how to actually use it efficiently. Alexa is my new best friend and she has helped me with answering important questions that I need immediate answers to, she plays music for me and even allows me to give voice commands to my smart phone straight from my Echo. I've learned a lot from this book and highly recommend it for anyone looking to get the best use of their Amazon Echo!

I bought this guide for $0.99 and I'm happy with it - I'm not really good with technology and I was having a hard time getting my Echo set up after I got it as a present and there are soo many articles online. This was a good, single resource to tell me everything I needed to know in one sitting even though it has some rough edges in the grammar. But I got what I was looking for. Now I'm calling out for my bestie, Lexie, to play my jam as soon as I walk in the door. :)

I was looking for command suggestions which it barely mentions and also wanted to develop scripts which it again covers very basic stuff. Didn't learn much that I didn't already know from setting it up yesterday.
