Crush your enemies (and your family) in Scrabble with this book By David Sinick Each summer, my extended family goes on a trip to Bethany Beach, Delaware, and each summer, I am reminded of my inferior scrabble skills when I am inevitably crushed by my mother & my uncle. After reading this book, and practicing some more on words with friends (using some of the techniques that Dave teaches), I can assure you that this summer, I will be the one doing the crushing. DO YOU HEAR ME MOM? I READ THIS BOOK AND I'M COMING FOR YOU!Also, I will say that this book has helped me immensely when I'm procrastinating on words with friends, and just using his 97% rule for prefixes has already increased my average score significantly, and along with that, my win ratio. Should I probably spend more time working and less time playing scrabble on my phone? Yes. But with this book and my newfound improved skill, I'm not gonna lie, it's hard to stop.If you are a scrabble / words with friends addict like me, and are tired of getting your butt kicked -- get this book. Vengeance shall soon be in your grasp.

For fans of authors Bill Bryson, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, and Christopher Moore,  and movies and TV shows such as Harold & Kumar go to White Castle, Time Bandits, Third Rock from the Sun, Community, Groundhog Day, Hot Tub Time Machine, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Best pals Jason Medley and Theo Barnes barely survived a backpacking trip through Europe and New Zealand that -- thanks to a jar of Cosmic Building Material they found -- almost wiped out the galaxy. But just as they embrace a future without any more cosmic lunacy: The Earth has started fluxing in and out of Existence; Theo's twin girls are teleporting; and Jason can't tell which version of his life is real. All because of Milo, the Universe's ultimate gremlin. Joined by the mysterious Jamie -- a down-and-out hotel clerk from Eternity -- Jason and Theo reunite on a frantic, cross-country chase across America, praying they can retrieve that radioactive jar, circumvent Milo, and save the Earth from irrevocable disaster. In author Russ Colchamiro's uproarious sequel to FINDERS KEEPERS, he finally confirms what we've long suspected ... that there's just no de Milo quite like a GENIUS DE MILO.

Review "Finders Keepers is unique and funny. A very imaginative writer." -- Publishers Weekly"There are only a handful of comedic authors that I enjoy, tops among them being Douglas Adams and Christopher Moore. Add Russ Colchamiro to that list." -- Ruled by Books"Finders Keepers is a rollicking novel." -- Science Fiction & Fantasy Association of New Zealand"Finders Keepers is a crazy roller-coaster ride. ... Off-the-wall. ... A rich blend of fantasy and sci-fi. ... Like nothing else I've read before." -- SF Book Reviews

From the Back Cover Best pals Jason Medley and Theo Barnes barely survived a backpacking trip through Europe and New Zealand that -- thanks to a jar of Cosmic Building Material they found -- almost wiped out the galaxy. But just as they embrace a future without any more cosmic lunacy: The Earth has started fluxing in and out of Existence; Theo's twin girls are teleporting; and Jason can't tell which version of his life is real. About the Author Russ Colchamiro is the author of the rollicking space adventure CROSSLINE, the hilarious scifi backpacking comedy FINDERS KEEPERS, and the outrageous sequel, GENIUS DE MILO, all with Crazy 8 Press.  Russ lives in West Orange, NJ, with his wife, two children, and crazy dog, Simon, who may in fact be an alien himself. Russ is now at work on the final book in the FINDERS KEEPERS trilogy.  As a matter of full disclosure, readers should not be surprised if Russ spontaneously teleports in a blast of white light followed by screaming fluorescent color and the feeling of being sucked through a tornado. It's just how he gets around -- windier than the bus, for sure, but much quicker. Crazy Cool SF By Christina Paige If you love to laugh at irreverent, off-beat, sometimes vulgar but never mean fantasy, this is one to get.The Universe is in trouble, because a while ago a jar containing Cosmic Building Material got loose on earth, and while Theo Barnes and Jason Medley dealt with the problem, there have been after-effects. Theo’s twin daughters have the ability to teleport, and they seem to be telepathic as well. Sudden shifts to alternate realities are making it hard for Jason to concentrate on proposing to his girlfriend. And Milo, the spirit of unregulated mischief in an otherwise orderly universe, has decided to be as annoying as possible, since he’s the only one with the imagination and the chutzpah to oppose The Minder of the Universe. If Milo can get his hands on that missing jar and its contents, he can more or less remake the universe in his own image, or at least wipe out large swaths of the current formation, including that little blue-green planet the Minder is so singularly fond of, along with all its inhabitants.Jamie is not important in the cosmic scheme of things; she knows this, and she’s okay with that. But she misses her brother, Lex, who voluntarily accompanied galactic designer Emma to her punishment-exile on Earth. Jamie is astonished when the Minder himself chooses her to go down to earth to save it from Milo’s machinations, but if it gives her a chance to find and rescue Lex, how can she decline? As those alternate reality shifts become more frequent, Theo and Jason realize they are running out of time, and more than one character begins to seriously wonder if the Minder of the Universe isn’t… overdue for retirement. But what exactly would that mean for the universe? Without an observer, would it cease to exist?Full of lively character depictions and hilarious, spot-on descriptions of social phenomena, Genius de Milo is a joyous romp.

However, I felt it necessary to read the first of the series ("Finders Keepers") first, to get a feel of the mood. Wow! It was frenetic, insane, complex and thoroughly enjoyable. Approaching "Genius de Milo", I was expecting more of the same, but Mr. Colchamiro slowed the pace a bit and concentrated on a few select characters from the first, most notably the absolutely wonderful pairing of Jason and Theo. These are 2 guys I really cared about. I loved this book so much, I didn't want it to end.Russ Colchamiro has a writing style that's centered, focused and completely interesting at all times. I am a slow reader, and usually just read a few chapters at bedtime, but this is a real page-turner, rife with intrigue, deception and humor. As with the first book, one must suspend disbelief a great deal; the complex goings-on are very well explained and presented. His imagination is outrageous and so much fun.The best thing is that this book could very well stand on its own, without having read the first. Enough info is provided to create a complete narrative of non-stop action-adventure hilarity. The scary thing is that I know people like Emma and Brigsby, and they are dealt with appropriately. If there's a 3rd or 4th sequel, I will be the first to hop on and enjoy the ride. Thanks, Russ!

Genius de Milo (Finders Keepers) (Volume 2) By pirategrl1014 The whole I was reading this book I kept getting reminded of the old movie Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure. It had that same comedic, yet partially serious feel to it. There is so much going on in this story that you never know what the next page will hold. Will you meet another talking animal, star crossed lovers? Who knows. That was part of this amazing ride that Russ brings you on.Unfortunately, I did not get to the read the first book where Jason and Theo are introduced and start on their epic adventure, but I did not feel that I lost out by picking up in the second. If anything it gave me a deeper appreciation for the characters and a desire to go and read the first one. Although this is a fun filled sci-fi book, it still manages to touch on topics such as loyalty, world issues, and family ties while we journey the universe with these two 20 year olds searching for themselves and trying to save the universe at the same time. Cannot wait to read the first boo in this series and can easily recommend it to the YA audience, middle school kids and adults that need a good laugh.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author via Pump Up Your Books in exchange for my honest review, which I have given.

I have to admit that before reading this I knew almost nothing about Minecraft. My nephew is always asking me to play, so I thought I would figure out what this game is all about. This guide covers everything from downloading and setting up the game to how to use mods and create worlds. I loved the super detailed information on recipes, that tells you exactly what components are needed to create a number of items. I finally understand how to play now!

Many of the poems in this volume are love poems or poems about people and places whose memories are cherished by the author. Some other poems are about difficult challenges that arrive unannounced. All of the poems included in this volume are written on an intimate level of expression meant to draw the reader into the situation or experienced described in the poem. It is the hope of the poet that these simple poems will find a home in the readers' hearts.

Austere but beautiful vision By Warren This thin volume of 46 short poems deals mostly with, as you might expect from the title, themes of isolation, mortality and morbidity. In this sense the first poem is a trifle misleading, as it is lighter and happier (as well as one of the best). The poet has a fine talent for making the world of the mind real through metaphor (very much on display in the first poem) and is at her best when playful (ditto). At times (particularly on a first reading) the voice can seem strained, but on closer view this seems to be the result of the poet’s ambition. A good example is the poem entitled “They Say Love Must Be”, with its wonderful final couplet. This is a fine book and I recommend it unreservedly.

Each poem in this collection takes you on a journey through time and provokes insights into the reader's own personal life experiences regarding friendship and mortality. I particularly enjoyed the poem entitled, "She's Great," as it exemplifies her keen observation of others. Cannot wait to read her next collection!

Combining the excess of The Bling Ring with the intimacy of Blow and the charm of Catch Me If You Can, an outrageous, entertaining and true story of an aspiring young actress’ ill-fated friendship and unwitting alliance with a drug smuggling “heiress.”

Aspiring actress Meili Cady left small-town Washington State for the glamorous lure of Los Angeles. Young and alone, she was struggling to make her big break. Then she met Lisette Lee. Calling herself the “Korean Paris Hilton,” Lisette claimed she was a model and a Korean pop star, lived in a $1.2 million dollar apartment in West Hollywood, owned a fleet of luxury cars, and flitted from one red-carpet event to the next.

The connection was instant. Meili was enchanted by her friend’s extravagant lifestyle, while Lee claimed Meili was the real thing in a town full of phonies. Soon, the financially strapped Meili became her friend’s personal assistant—and found herself sucked into an audacious criminal enterprise. But when Meili finally realized what she was a part of it was too late—she was in too deep, caught in a terrifying relationship with a manipulative and abrasive con artist smuggling millions of dollars of pot into the Midwest.

Trapped in a precarious criminal world of money, drugs, and dangerous secrets, Meili struggled to understand the line between truth and lie. A once naive girl who fell down the rabbit hole, she could only watch helplessly as it all came crashing down around her. Smoke is her story—an electrifying tale of vice, corruption, hubris, and lost innocence as shocking and entertaining as The Wolf of Wall Street and Bringing Down the House.

Combining the excess of The Bling Ring with the intimacy of Blow, Smoke is the outrageous true story of an aspiring young actress's ill-fated friendship and unwitting alliance with a drug-smuggling con artist

By JaneAhloma Has the writer penned this tale to save her skin?In parts it reads with complete lack of honesty, gullibility that makes you cringe and stupidity you never wants to empathize with. However, an interesting romp through the tale of drug smuggling by a celebrity fantasist.Made me feel like taking a shower after I read it.

By Tara Leigh To be completely honest, I was skeptical about this book because of the comparisons made between it and Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman; I'm not a fan of that book for several reasons, one of which is the fact that Piper Kerman (by her own admission) is a little too high on the WASP scale for me and I don't find her very relatable. I love the Netflix series by the same title, but it's much different than the book and the supporting characters are what make the show, not Piper. I wanted to read Smoke in advance of the author's appearance at the 2015 Arkansas Literary Festival, to determine whether I'd want to attend her speaking engagement.I found myself immediately drawn in to Meili's story and, while I was often skeptical about some of the details, I couldn't stop wondering how her involvement with her L.A. "friend," Lisette, would come to a close. What I truly appreciate about Meili's story is the fact that she never attempts to diminish her involvement in the operation, nor does she try to hide the moment when she began to realize the magnitude of the crime. What skeptical readers must realize is that Meili, like I have done myself, was seeking acceptance in an intimidating environment and it allowed for a sort of mental suspension of disbelief; readers may perceive Lisette's tales as fantastical, but to a inexperienced young woman in need of support, her narrative was acceptable.Meili Cady was recently interviewed by a Los Angeles news affiliate and was asked that tough question, "Why?" Her response was succinct, yet protectively vague, and I found myself thinking about the unwise decisions I've made in my own life and why it is that those who are open about their mistakes are persecuted while others are allowed to mask theirs from public view. I respect Meili for sharing her experience and, as she mentioned once in her blog, "we are welcome to decide to be unhappy or look at the darker side of things, but at the same time we are just as welcome to embrace something better; to strive to make ourselves better and happier, and more able to give something back to the world."

I love Orange is the New Black and this is nowhere near it. Smoke is a story about what a person did to end up arrested. It is not a story about inside a woman's prison. The story and the characters are simplistic. Even, when the main character keeps reiterating how naive she is, it stretches one's credulity. This young woman, Meili, moves to California to follow her dream of acting. She has friends who just seem to pop into her life, the book giving no description of how they met. Then, she meets this Lissette character who seems, almost from the start, to have personality difficulties, but our girl stays with her - why, you may ask? Well, she has lots of money - might be an answer. They vow friendship with each other that is unlike any friendship I have had. You ask yourself, 'Are they gay, perhaps?' Or, maybe our heroine knows more than she lets on, and they are making a good living as partners in crime? Anyway, our little Meili, in the book, appears as a sort of groupie to this other women.Something that I also find unbelievable is why, when asked to flow money through her bank account, Meili does not just refuse. You see, 'normal' friends do that sort of thing. We all have barriers. Then, there is the time when she sees all that cash in luggage that they are moving - why didn't she just walk out? I would have gone to the cops with no problem at all. I would have realized I was being used and that the operation might not have been legal and asked the authorities to investigate. That Meili tolerated all of this makes you wonder at her upbringing.Maybe her acting training helped her to lose her interface with reality and lose the concept of what a solid and healthy friendship feels like. The book, to me, gives no good reason why she stuck with the drug smuggler other than she was getting money from it. At least her boyfriend, at the end, wanted no part of a felon, and I don't blame him. This is a quick book to get through and might be entertaining for beach or airplane reading. It in no way inspires thought and gives little insight to why a 'good' person goes bad. I probably would not have bought it, had I known what it was like.

Fresh, Vivid, and Different By krissyl I've read numerous non-fiction books by this author about diverse topics ranging from cherished childhood pets to life as an air force wife, but this is the first fiction book she's written, and I was excited to check it out. This fun, entertaining, and well-written novella begins with a brief description and history of square dancing, and then the story begins. Reggie and Abbie are looking for a new winter hobby, and Abbie convinces her reluctant husband to take up square dancing at the local church. Soon, the two find themselves swept up in the social whirl of the square dancing scene. As Reggie and Abbie hone their dancing skills, they begin participating in a traveling dance group, where they experience various cities and meet fascinating people, some of whom they like, and others that they would prefer to avoid.Sprinkled with humorous anecdotes, pictures, and square dance calls throughout, this is a fresh, vivid, and different read. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in dance.

From A Verse-Maker’s Diary is analogous to a bouquet. A corsage of poems that portray great versatility in both hue and fragrance. It courageously experiments with bold forms of poetry while gracefully hanging on to its sole purpose. For example, included in this collection are works such as a poem without words, a ‘phonem’ and an acrostic verse that will leave you stupefied. Every poem strives to pinch a distinct feeling. An ailment for the soul and candy for the tongue!

A dazzling collection of original essays by some of America's most notable young writers on the cultural impact of the Star Wars films

A Galaxy Not So Far Away is the first ever exploration of the innumerable ways the Star Wars films have forever altered our cultural and artistic landscape. Edited by Glenn Kenny, a senior editor and critic at Premiere magazine, this singular collection allows some of the nation's most acclaimed writers to anatomize, criticize, celebrate, and sometimes simply riff on the prismatic aftereffects of an unparalleled American phenomenon. Jonathan Lethem writes of the summer he saw Star Wars twenty-one times as his mother lay dying of cancer. Neal Pollack chips in with the putative memoir of a certain young man having problems with his father, written in the voice of Holden Caulfield. Erika Krouse ponders the code of the Jedi Knight and its relation to her own pursuit of the martial arts. New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell meditates upon the mysterious figure Lando Calrissian.

A classic assemblage of pop writing at its best, A Galaxy Not So Far Away is a book for everyone who loves Star Wars films and seeks to understand just what it is about these films that has so enchanted an entire generation of filmgoers.

A Galaxy Not So Far Away: Writers and Artists on Twenty-five Years of Star WarsFrom Holt Paperbacks

Amazon.com Review A Galaxy Not So Far Away is a collection of essays that set out to seriously explore the vast landscape of the Star Wars cultural phenomenon. Premiere magazine editor Glenn Kenny has complied 18 well-crafted pieces from a wide array of pop culture aficionados, including ribald filmmaker Kevin Smith and Onion satirist Todd Hanson.

The pieces range from serious scholarship to self-deprecating geek confessionals. Some--such as "Pale Starship, Pale Rider: The Ambiguous Appeal of Boba Fett" by Tom Bissell--tend toward the esoteric minutiae of fandom, and are sure to please the rabid devotee. But most are kindly universal and range far beyond the spacey subject matter into more human territory. Thankfully, most of the writers don't take themselves too seriously as they make the jump to hyperspace. Thus, the collection is a pleasure to read and an interesting foray into the passionate media culture surrounding the Star Wars universe. Overall, an excellent intellectual exercise for anyone who has ever found escape in a galaxy far, far away. --Jeremy Pugh

From Publishers Weekly The mention of Star Wars inspires fervor among many writers. For some, their viewing of the films was life-changing. Premiere magazine senior editor Kenny gathers essays that explore various takes on Star Wars from hip-hop activists, novelists, critics and others. Director Kevin Smith writes, "A brother just can't escape being a Star Wars dork sometimes"; writer Neal Pollack offers a parody that involves Osama bin Kenobi and Puke Skybarfer; Jonathan Lethem (Motherless Brooklyn) admits to seeing the original Star Wars 21 times in the summer of 1977; and book editor Webster Younce confesses that watching the Star Wars Holiday Special is "an agonizing experience."Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal "May the Force be with you" has been the mantra of Star Wars fans for a quarter century. In honor of the film's silver anniversary, 16 novelists, journalists, filmmakers, and critics offer personal reminiscences. Like the Force itself, there is a light and a dark side to these essays, ranging from Onion scribe Tod Hanson's hilarious yet adroit defense of The Phantom Menace to Lydia Millet's use of Darth Vader as a metaphor for the loss of humanity. What is sorely lacking is the voice of a diehard geek fanboy explaining why legions of people of all ages and backgrounds are stark raving bonkers over these B movies; why they dress up in costumes and replicate props, spend all their spare cash on paraphernalia, and queue up outside theaters months before the films open; and why they spend countless hours in chat rooms endlessly discussing every imaginable facet. Nonetheless, this is very entertaining, and Star Wars fans will love it. Michael Rogers, "Library Journal" Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Star Wars Realpolitik By A Customer Don't listen to disgruntled Star Wars fans on this book. There are only a few out and out negative pieces here (one, "Jedi Uber Alles" by Tom Carson, is actually pretty good); most are fond, respectful, but above all they're *interesting.* No, this isn't a licensed love fest. Nor does it claim to be. It's about how the movies have affected our culture and our minds, and it's done so in good and bad ways. Star Wars, as this book's editor Glenn Kenny points out, did not at all kill movies. But it seems pretty inarguable that it made them louder and dumber, which (again as Kenny points out) is weird because George Lucas is the world's biggest independent filmmaker who controls with an auteur's pickiness his own product. But anyway: The really good essays here are Jonathan Lethem's (about seeing Star Wars 21 times in one summer), Tom Bissell's (about Boba Fett), Todd Hanson's (about The Phantom Menance), Lydia Millet's (about Darth Vader), Elvis Mitchell's (about Lando), and the above-mentioned Carson essay which I hate as a fan but admit makes some good points. There are also some really quite dreadful essays (say nothing but good of the dead) which I won't stoop to name. All Star Wars fans should get this book; it's important, and it's funny, and it has smart, tough things to say.

By tvtv3 A GALAXY NOT SO FAR AWAY is a collection of essays that attempt to illustrate just how far reaching STAR WARS has impacted and influenced our society and culture. Most of the essays are positive, many are humorous, and several are nostaligiac in their reflections. Some, however are negative and a few are quite thought provoking. I especially enjoyed reading Kevin Smith's "Married to the Force" and Todd Hansen's "A Big Dumb Movie About Space Wizards". The two essays that paint the STAR WARS phenomenon in the most negative light "Jedi Uber Alles" and "Anakin, Get Your Gun" are also the two essays that made me pause and think the most. I also enjoyed the essay that illustrated just how STAR WARS has influenced hip-hop music, suggesting that hip-hop wouldn't exist (at least not in it's current form) without STAR WARS.This book is not a collection of essays about "What STAR WARS means to me" (though there are a few of those in here). Instead, it is a book illustrating just how huge and powerful the little space opera that could has influenced our society. This is a great book for most STAR WAR fans or for anyone interested in popular culture.

Smith I was just out of graduate school and working in my first professional position when the first Star Wars movie (now known as "Episode 4") came out. I loved it. I had been a confirmed pulp-sf addict since the mid-1950s, and I was predisposed to enjoy the film for what it was, not for what the critics thought it was (and what they apparently wanted me, as a card-carrying intellectual, to believe it was). But I'm not too proud to admit that I also loved "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" when they came out. I mean, this stuff is great fun, right? The stuffier film critics, though, decided that George Lucas had killed the movies -- just as there were cries of anguish back in the late '20s, when the movies began to talk. Yes, the Star Wars universe has had a great influence on culture, and not just "pop" culture, but so have Gucci and Ronald Reagan and McDonald's. Most of the contributors to this anthology are of an age to have grown up on Star Wars, and the distinction can easily be made between those who don't take it, or themselves, too seriously (Jonathem Lethem, Neal Pollack, Erika Krouse, and Elwood Reed), and those for whom Lucas is Evil incarnate (notably Arion Berger and Tom Carson). The book is an interesting read for those, like me, with an interest in film-making and screenwriting that goes beyond just sitting there with a bag of popcorn, but I could only shake my head at some of the breast-beating Jeremiads.

Seven full-length magical novels by seven bestselling urban fantasy authors. Included titles: Dire Straits by Helen Harper Dog with a Bone by Hailey Edwards Dead Rising by Debra Dunbar Influential Magic by Deanna Chase Forbidden by Selene Charles All for a Rose by Jennifer Blackstream The Keepers by Donna Augustine Dire Straits--A half-dead daemon, a massacre at her based PI firm and evidence that suggests she's the main suspect for both ... Bo Blackman is having a very bad week. She might be naive and inexperienced but she's determined to get to the bottom of the crimes, even if it means involving herself with one of London's most powerful vampire Families and their enigmatic leader. Dog with a Bone--Half-bloods with Thierry’s skill set are given two options. They can join the conclave’s marshal program, or they can pack their bags. Turn down the job offer, and you’ve just booked yourself a one-way ticket to Faerie. Texas is the only home Thierry has ever known, and she’s not going anywhere. Even if it means following in her notorious father’s footsteps as a peacekeeper. But pinning on the badge opens her eyes to the fact sometimes fae need protection too, and that sometimes humans are the real monsters. Dead Rising--Solaria Ainsworth was born a Templar, destined to take up the mantle of duty as her family’s Order had done for hundreds of years. Except she refuses to take her Oath of Knighthood. Barely making ends meet in Baltimore, Aria is offered a job by the Mistress of the local vampire family—to research a magical symbol. It’s an easy task for a woman who has spent every moment of her life either in armor or with her nose in ancient manuscripts. But when her research reveals a sordid connection between the vampires and a mass murder, Aria needs to decide who is worthy of her protection. Modern Templars believe only God should judge, but Aria must do exactly that or watch the Baltimore streets run red with blood. Influential Magic--Willow Rhoswen, part-time vampire hunter for the Void, is having a rough week. Four years after her twin brother’s mysterious death, Willow’s life is threatened and the director saddles her with a new partner—her ex-boyfriend turned vamp, David. But unsure of where David’s loyalties lie, Willow turns to Talisen, her childhood crush, for help. Caught between two gorgeous men and a director who’ll stop at nothing to control Willow’s gifts, she’ll have to follow her instincts and learn who to trust. Otherwise, she risks losing more than just her life. Forbidden--Flint DeLuca and her dad have moved three times in the past year. But that's the life of a carnie. Even an ex-carnie like her. Her father swears this is the last move. All Flint wants now is to graduate from High School and put the carnival life behind her. Unfortunately, one of the two ain't gonna happen. Cain. No last name. Wears shades in school. Dresses entirely in black. And only speaks to her when he's insulting her. And yet... there's something about the Goth boy that draws her like a moth to flame. God, she can't wait to graduate, only problem is she's pretty sure her high school’s infested by vampires. Cain might be one of them. And for some reason, she seems to be on their menu. All For a Rose-- A tale as old as time… An enchanted rose. A witch’s curse. A beast’s temper. A maiden who can see the potential for good even beneath the scales of a monster. It’s amazing what can transpire…All for a Rose. The Keepers-- Two days ago, Jo Davids was a waitress by night and a college kid by day, with the unnerving problem of objects floating around her. One Day ago, Jo's sexy boss, Cormac, noticed her for all the wrong reasons when she witnessed a man transform into a monster in the basement of his casino. Today, Cormac ordered her shot.

Every other review was 5 stars and I was completely disappointed. So this group of stories was a welcome and refreshing change. I only skipped two of the stories, and that was because I read them elsewhere! There were a couple stories I didn't enjoy as much, but they were still readable. I think I downloaded the samples for the next book for three of these stories, and would have downloaded a fourth but it's not available yet. I'd say that most of these are New Adult books. There was some swearing, most books stuck to sexual tension and no further.I wanted to add reviews for each story, because I find that really helpful as a reader:Dire Straits by Helen Harper: Bo Blackman is a low-level P.I. in London and right at the beginning is incriminated in an attempted murder, then witnesses multiple murders at her workplace. I really enjoyed this book. I am interested in reading more of this series. This is a vampire book done well.Dog with a Bone by Hailey Edwards: Thierry is a half-fae working towards becoming a marshall, which in this book are investigators who deal with fae crimes on earth. She is very powerful and works with the one other marshall who is immune to her power. This is an interesting read. I think it's the author's first book, or at least it feels that way. There is a lot of story that happens before the books begins, and the way that the author reveals it is a little frustrating because it takes needlessly long. I'm not sure I would keep reading this series except the reviews for her second book are excellent, so I downloaded a sample.A Demon Bound by Debra Dunbar: This is a very interesting concept with the main character being a demon that basically has to fight her own kill and destroy impulses the whole book. I did start to lose interest though, and skipped several chapters. I think other people would enjoy this more than me.Influential Magic by Deanna Chase: I've read this whole trilogy, and really enjoyed it. It takes place in New Orleans, and it's a world where people are aware of fae. The main character owns a bakery, dabbles in potion-making, and works part-time hunting vampires. She has special abilities that the Fae government takes advantage of. There are lots of fae and vampires in this book, and a love triangle. I'm a fan of most of Deanna Chase's books, and this one, to me, is a definite winner.Forbidden by Selene Charles: This is an interesting tale. The main character is a former circus worker, but she's still in high school. She's a skilled flyer and tightrope walker. Several times they mention how uncanny her skills are, but that's actually never explained. Huh, now that I think about it, I find that frustrating! Anyway, she befriends a skinny, geeky kid named Abel who has a hulking older brother that she can't get near without lots of sexual tension while he stares angrily. That part got a bit old. He has more mood swings than the worse caricature of a PMS-y woman. But it's still a well-written book, and I would have downloaded the next book if it were available. I'm not sure if I'll go seeking it out though. All for a Rose by Jennifer Blackstream: I've read all of her fairy tale books. This one is loosely connected. You can read it without having read her others, but the epilogue will probably be confusing because that's where it ties in to her series. I enjoyed this version of "Beauty and the Beast." I think this book is the only one with sexual content in the anthology, if I remember correctly. I actually read it a few weeks ago, but I remember liking it.The Keepers, by Donna Augustine: I really enjoyed this book. I didn't expect to, because the weird almost-prologue is too short and doesn't give enough info to really lure you in and make you actually feel bad for the heroine like it's supposed to. I would really flesh that out and rewrite that if I were the author. Anyway, other than that, it's an interesting read about a heroine who was abandoned as a baby and has weird powers that are actually never quite explained. I actually think that should have been explained more. All we know is that she got kicked out of lots of foster homes and can't have a close relationship because of her weirdness. She finally encounters possible answers to her heritage in an unlikely place--the casino where she works. Lots of books have relationships where one or more characters has to forgive the other for something they did. This book probably wins the award for most egregious thing to have to forgive! But I actually really enjoyed that part. I've already downloaded the sample for the next book in the series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great for YA readers, good for non YA readers By Leiah Really liked the ones I read. The ones I didn't are YA, which doesn't make them bad, just not my tastes.Anthologies. What could be better? I have found some truly wonderful “New to Me” authors in anthologies, as well as exclusive stories by authors I love. Wicked Magic doesn’t disappoint my expectations.Dire Straits by Helen Harper. I have had Bo Blackman on my “Read” list for quite a while, but haven’t had the opportunity to try yet. This story is the first in the Blackman series, and I loved it. We first meet Bo as she sits in a truly nasty neighborhood, waiting to serve papers on an errant halfbreed daemon. Well, needing to pee may have saved her this time. But who seems to want Bo locked away – and the world to change in cruel and terrifying ways. Helen jumps to my “Gonna Read for Sure” list. 5 of 5Dog With A Bone. Hailey Edwards. Thierry’s story is a YA. The daughter of Death, literally, Thierry has a very specialized, and very dangerous, skill. One that means she is a Paranormal Marshall – or she leaves her home in Texas for the wilds of faerie. The story itself is quite good, though the whole “Eighteen-year-old girl finds love and hot nookie with a man decades her senior” thing sort of creeps me out. Enjoyed it, but I am not a YA lover, so won’t add the series to my lists. 3 of 5A Demon Bound. Debra Dunbar. The first in the very popular Imp series. Samantha Martin is a slum lord. Well, an Imp as well. So, the whole ‘slum lord’ thing really sort of works, right? I was surprised at how much I liked Samantha. Quirky, mischievous, and generally likable, even if she is a minor demon. Besides, anyone who loves hellhounds and horses can’t be all bad, right? 4 of 5Influential Magic. Deanna Chase. IM is the first in a series subtitled Crescent City Fae. This new series stars Willow Rhoswen, owner of The Fated Cupcake and part-time vampire hunter for the Void. Oh, and she is also a faery – complete with wings and flight capabilities. Well, when she isn’t around vampires, whose walking death drains her earth magic, and thus her life force. A very uncomfortable position to be in when your evil faery auntie, who is also the Director of the Void policing agency partners you with a vampire in order to investigate dastardly deeds by the local vampire corporation. Especially when that vampire happens to be your ‘used-to-be-human’ boyfriend. A boyfriend, who suddenly dumped you with a quick text message (jerk!), then turns up later turned – literally. I read and reviewed previously, and own the whole series. Any series that includes a Shi Tzu who turns into a wolf is worth a read! 4 of 5Forbidden. Selene Charles. In my absolutely firm intention to not read books I don’t want to (Book Reader FlameOut is a depressing!) I didn’t read this one. If you like YA, give it a try. No rating. All for a Rose. Jennifer Blackstream. Another I didn’t read. Violent naga, rich girl turned poor. It simply didn’t spark my interest, though that is no reflection on the book. It just didn’t strike my fancy. No rating.

This is a great mix of stories By Kindle Customer You know you have a good anthology when you break after the first book to go get the rest in that series. The first sand last were my favourites and I did get their books. Anthologies are a great way to meet new authors and be introduced to their series. These stories are moistly fun with great characters. There are a few editing snafus but not many and certainly not enough to mar the storytelling. Overall, this is a good mix and well worth the time and cost.
