Review Reviewed by Cheryl E. Rodriguez for Readers' Favorite Gail Hickman, a Canadian Native American from the Okanagan tribe, writes a collection of meaningful poems in Reflections of the Soul. Thepoetry is divided into four categories: Family, Friendship, Condolences andLife Experiences. Hickman expresses: “We become our own art painting,a lifestyle of our choosing.” She asks the reader to take a journeythrough her eyes and to be inspired by her feelings, experiences andobservations of life and people. This collected work encompassesdecades. It is full of memories and inspiration to uplift your heart, healyour soul, and challenge your ideology. To add clarity to her poetry,Hickman includes illustrations by various artists and includes personalphotos as well. Rich in culture and insight, Reflections of the Soul by Gail Hickmanportrays the present and the past of the Okanagan lifestyle. Encouragingand relatable, her thoughts are blessings; words of thanksgiving woveninto poetic thoughts and ultimately placed on paper. These poems aremeant to be cherished for generations for those who take them to heart. Most of the poetry is free verse, but a few are written with a subtlerhyme scheme. As the author, Hickman is the speaker of her poems. Themood of the poetry is often somber, at times almost proverbial, butalways includes a touch of inspiration. She openly shares her religiousviews and native mystical philosophies in a manner to promote hope andwell being. Many of the poems were born out of things Hickman viewed orportions of history that inspired her to pen her ideas and thoughts.

About the Author My name is Gail Hickman, who is an Okanagan Indian from the Okanagan Indian Band located outside of Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. I am married with one son, and the oldest of nine children. As a child, I liked drawing, and then the desire to write poetry snuck up on me. I would write about my life, family, friends, nature, and what were being shown in the media. I would write a poem as a gift for someone I knew, and not keep a copy for myself. As a result, I lost poems between 1986–2007 because I wrote everything by hand. I didn’t own a computer or printer back then that would have made a difference in the world. It is my hope I will regain copies of poems from the past, because they capture my journey. Some of my best poems were written when I was living through different hardships and show how I’ve grown and evolved into a better person. Since 2007, my poetry became influenced by words spoken to my Spirit, vivid dreams/visions, and sometimes nightmares, which stayed with me until I would write the poem then they would disappear and I would be at peace. Other poems were written after watching a documentary or movie that gripped my emotions. I believe in God, His Personal name is Ehyeh/I AM, and that his Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth is our Lord and Saviour, and I share the word of God in poetry.

A unique view from a unique perspective By Liz Jensen I first met Gail when she was just starting to write poetry for publication and have watched her poetry deepen and mature over the years. Gail is a deeply spiritual person and has an innate sense of compassion for others. Her poetry reflects her inner strength and astute perceptions of people who have shaped her life. She offers her readers a unique perspective that is informed as much by her craft as it is by her world view. A poet to enjoy now and follow in the future.
