How did a father with no criminal history come to be on trial for the brutal murder of his wife? All marriages have their secrets. Things started to unravel for Gerard Baden-Clay the night his wife Allison vanished. Within days everything private would become public. Behind the façade of happiness their life together was riven with debt, infidelity, unfulfilled dreams, and bitter jealousy. It began with a phone call to police in Brisbane on April 20, 2012. Gerard wanted to report his wife missing. When officers arrived to investigate, they found the real estate agent neatly dressed for work. Weeping welts on the side of his face were simply shaving cuts, he told them. Police weren’t so sure and opened the book on one of Australia’s biggest-ever missing persons investigations, conducted in the heart of one of Brisbane’s wealthiest suburbs. The Baden-Clays had been married 14 years. They had three young daughters and were prominent figures within their well-heeled community. Gerard was the great grandson of Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell, president of the local chamber of commerce, and vice-president of the school P & C. His wife Allison was a one-time beauty queen who spoke six languages and was global human resources manager for a travel firm when she gave it all away to marry the man of her dreams. Together they made their home in Brookfield, an idyllic semi-rural suburb, but all was not as it seemed. 10 days after Gerard reported her missing, Allison’s body was discovered on a creek bank 14km from her home. This is the definitive story of a crime that captured the nation—the unbelievable twists, turns, secrets, and lies. Written by the journalist who covered the case from the outset, it weaves together exclusive interviews and police and court records to explain how a father with no criminal history came to be on trial for a brutal murder. It’s a story about love, lust, image, ambition, and marriage, and about every day choices and their consequences.

A thoroughly researched, true crime tale of a too-trusting wife with an astoundingly narcissistic husband. I was surprised by the number of people who fell for Gerard's facade, all flash and veneer. He seemed disingenuous in nearly every interaction. I struggled with why Allison could not see her husband for who he actually was. She was moving toward healthy self esteem and clarity, but not before it was too late. This is yet another cautionary tale about being careful about the people we allow into our lives. Gerard was a brash, pompous fraud, mesmerized by his own reflection. When he resorted to murder, it was just one more deplorable action on a long continuum of self interest. What Allison saw in him, I cannot fathom. She somehow fell for this arrogant, predatory player. Throughout the book, I kept wishing Allison would have chosen Drayton. This is a well written book that keeps the reader engaged and turning pages. It is interesting, sad and triumphant when justice prevails. Recommended.

Balanced and informative insight into tragic murder case By Kirsten This is the story of a gifted, loving mother who had already achieved so much yet died tragically before she could guide her daughters through childhood. It is also the story of a man who thrived on deception and secrets - a man who preached ethics and honesty to his staff as they watched him conduct an affair with one of his employees while running his business into debt. Even his surname demonstrated the value of seeming important rather than being genuine. This book summarises an emotional and suspenseful case...like many Australians, I knew as soon as Allison was reported missing that she must already be dead; I could see Gerard was lying at his only public statement; and I was worried that all the jury's delays and questions might have meant they were going to find him innocent. The book sifts through the lies and myths and gives a clear, full picture of both Allison and Gerard. Even if you followed the trial closely, you will still be drawn in by Allison's warmth and you will still be astounded at the depths of Gerard's arrogance and entitlement.

The Murder of Allison Baden-Clay By Beryl This book was very well written and I feel fortunate that one night while searching the various books offered on the Internet I happened to come across this one. The attention to detail was terrific, you come to know about every main person in the story, as well as the supporting members of this story. Each person keeps one's interest to the very conclusion of the book. I was happy to read at the end that the only conclusion for a jury to come to, did occur and without hesitation the Judge gave the only sentencing a person of this nature, and actions, deserved. All True Crime readers should enjoy this book from beginning to end.
