From the heart of a survivor is a selection of poems, created by a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, the poems are captured in the book in the order they were written, during a difficult period of time, from reporting, up to court and then into therapy, I believe it offers a glimpse into the heart and mind of a survivor, and the trials and tribulations often faced years after the abuse has ended.

Ohlsen After buying this collection I realized that there is no table of contents, which makes it problematic to navigate. Granted, most poems only have a number in Latin numerals as their title, but still.I was happy to recognize the poems and look through them. The language used in this translation is showing its age though. It can be argued that this is a good illustration of the text's age, from 87 - 54bc, but in my opinion it would help present day readers to have a more modern language version available. If you are looking for a version of Catullus' poems to browse through and don't need to look up specific texts then it'll do just fine - Catullus' emotional and at times graphic language comes through just fine.

Helmke No Starch Press has published a number of programming books that impress me, both in their depth and in their accessibility.Build an HTML5 Game is intended for people who already have a basic familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This book takes you beyond the typical “let’s introduce tags and build basic web pages” stuff you usually see and walks the reader through building an entire browser-based game, start to finish. The programming starts immediately in Chapter 1, which is cool. All the important facets are covered from sprite animation, transitions and transforms, game logic, levels and sound, and quite a bit more. The reader who is most likely to benefit is the one who has at least a little programming experience, but wants to broaden their skills with an entry into game development. To that end, I suggest you already have a little experience making web sites and using JavaScript and jQuery. If you have previous experience developing Flash games and want to move to the present and future with HTML5, you will also find this book useful and an enjoyable way to get started.I really enjoyed reading Build an HTML5 Game. The writing is clear and easy to follow, the examples are good, and the concepts provide a solid foundation on which you can build. This is not a comprehensive “everything you will ever need or want to know about game programming” sort of book, but rather a clean and enjoyable entry that helps you over the first hurdle of writing that first game. It then gives you ideas and tips to help you know what else is out there so you have a bit of a roadmap to continue learning as you figure out what sorts of games you want to create.

Great for budding programmers By ChristCenteredGamer Thank you No Starch Press for sending us a copy of this book to review! My kids have learned many programming languages like JavaScript and Ruby thanks to the helpful books published by No Starch Press. Build an HTML5 Game assumes that you are familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and will teach you how to create a game from start to finish using them. You don't have to be an advanced coder to read this book, but some foreknowledge will go a long way since you won't be learning the basics of these programming/scripting languages. This 198 page book written by Karl Bunyan will teach you how to make a browser based bubble popping game similar to Bust-A-move. There are eight chapters and the first seven are dedicated to programming the game while the final chapter discusses other HTML5 capabilities such as retrieving data, webSockets, WebGL (for 3D) and security. The final chapter also makes some suggestions on other games HTML5 would be well suited for including solitaire, platformers and match-3 games like Bejeweled. You won't be getting any history lessons as the first chapter has you diving in and coding right away. Some of the goals achieved during the development process include randomizing the game board, calculating the firing angle and stopping point for the bubbles fired, dealing with collisions, keeping track of the score and handling new levels and the game's ending.Throughout the book, there are many helpful explanations and points to consider. While the author recommends using Google's jQuery files, we have found the program to run better with them hosted locally. The source code is readily available to download and view if you're stuck and can't figure out why the game isn't running. The price of the physical copy is a reasonable $22 which is much cheaper than taking a college course on browser based game development. The Kindle version is even cheaper at less than $14.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Advanced-level programming book focused on game development By John Caddell This is a book that many teens will get value from - almost every one I know (my kid is 14) has an idea for a game or would like to be in the gaming world doing something. For these kids, "Build an HTML 5 Game" will be a great gift. The book is expressly designed to help coders learn the mechanics of building an online game, and goes step by step through the process of building a version of a bubble shooter game. One thing to note - this is not an introductory programming book. It assumes the reader has already mastered the basics of programming, and glosses over some steps (setting up a server environment, for example) that could bewilder a novice. That said, it covers many bases and includes examples of many types of web-game components, including CSS, Javascript, jQuery, etc.So, if you are interested in this book but don't know how to program yet, consider also buying a book like "Javascript for Kids" and working through that first.

Rain of Gold is a true-life saga of love, family and destiny that pulses with bold vitality, sweeping from the war-ravaged Mexican mountains of Pancho Villa s revolution to the days of Prohibition in California. It all began when Villasenor s maternal grandmother sat him down in their little home in the barrio of Carlsbad, California, gave him sweet bread and told him the story of their past. Of his mother Lupe, the most beautiful girl in the whole village who was only a child when Villa s men came shooting into their canyon. And of his father Juan and his family, reduced to rags and starvation as they sought refuge across the border, where they believed that endless opportunity awaited. Lupe and Juan met and fell in love in California, but they found that the doors to the Promised Land were often closed to those from south of the border. His father was forced to take the law into his own hands, in spite of his wife s objections. With love and humor, Villasenor shares this passionate love story that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit. An all-American story of struggle and success, Rain of Gold focuses on three generations of Villasenor s kin, their spiritual and cultural roots back in Mexico, their immigration to California and overcoming poverty, prejudice and economic exploitation. It is the warm-hearted and spirited account of the wily, wary and persevering forebears of Victor Villasenor.

History of Southern California during prohibition along with the migrant workers in the fields. These life stories were filled with emotion, struggles and the faith that brought all through times of hardship. This is definitely a tribute to the ancestors of the author.

Did you know the human body contains silicon, a common component in computer devices? The silicon in the human body could be used to operate the device you are using right now. Unless you favor old-school communication, in which case you may prefer a pencil. There’s enough carbon in the human body to make 16,000 pencils. In the event you run out of paper, you could scribble on your arms, legs, and back. After all, the human body is covered with about two square yards of skin...plenty of writing surface to spare. The human body is a wonderful resource...mustn’t let it go to waste. That’s the point behind Grave Anatomy: 101 Uses for a Dead Human Body, a lighthearted, whimsical, well-researched look into what makes up the human body...and what can be made out of it. Examining the historical, scientific, and speculative benefits of a stiff, this book discusses: how 19th century British colonists in Egypt supposedly used mummies to power locomotives, because wood and coal were scarce; how some of the key ingredients to a 4th of July picnic (charcoal bricks, matches, fireworks) are all found in the human body; and how a long-distance runner could stay hydrated for over 40 hours with the 10 gallons of water found in the average person.

LIVE VERSE is fast-moving underdog poetry that has its own view of humanity's disorderly conduct as it deals with love and politics, music and baseball, hard times and corporate greed. Live Verse is conversational, down-to-earth poetry with a bemused view of the world from the bottom looking up. It reflects the author's life as an often-out-of work traveling musician whose resume of odd jobs is way past colorful. For music lovers the bonus is a first-hand account of the boisterous journey of American popular music from ragtime to rap. Live Verse comes from America's bars, ballparks and truck stops. From a country music bar in Anchorage, Alaska and from a jazz joint on Frenchmen Street in New Orleans. It comes from an all-night diner in Bakersfield where the juke box is playing Merle Haggard's "The Bottle Let Me Down." It comes from Dodger Stadium on the day that every baseball player wears number 42 to honor Jackie Robinson. It comes from a bus depot in Cincinnati where a mute TV shows President Obama speaking in front of the presidential seal and two American flags while a few distracted travelers sit staring at the screen and wonder if any of it matters. It comes from every union hall that celebrates the American wage slave who creates our prosperity but is still fighting for a fair share of it. It comes from the Capitol steps in Washington, D.C., where some noisy demonstrators brave snow flurries to wave signs declaring that capitalism is the legitimate racket of the ruling class and that Wall Street is a high crime area. At the same time, on the floor of the Senate, a senator from an oil patch state shows off a snow ball and declares global warming to be a hoax. A keen observer of political absurdities, the author claims that "politics has gone from bad to verse" and goes on to prove it. For the reader who is trying to make sense of mankind's twenty-first century mess and doesn't know whether to laugh or cry, LIVE VERSE is here to help.

Live Verse: A Tilted View of Humanity's Disorderly Conduct, by Ellen Griffith

About the Author Ellen Griffith started at the bottom playing guitar in a skid row bar and ended up at the bottom as a starving songwriter. And much of what happened in between can be found in this collection of LIVE VERSE and Leftover Prose. She blew off higher education to follow her heart as an often-out-of-work traveling musician. Lack of full employment in her chosen field led to a colorful resume of incidental jobs. She discovered that "blue collar" actually means dirty-boots jobs, rubber-gloves jobs, mop-and-broom jobs and a lot worse. She worked as a car hop, dog washer, cab driver, ranch hand and warehouse clerk, to name a few, before she finally learned to type so she could sit down. Typing led to a graphic artist job, and when a musician friend became entertainment editor at the Santa Monica Outlook, she moonlighted for ten years covering the music beat for the Outlook. In 2005 she produced an album, Songwriters Choice, containing 17 original songs with a hand-picked studio band known as the Demonstrators. She fell in love with rhymed verse as a child (don't we all?) but in high school literature class, she learned that serious poetry doesn't rhyme anymore, and it seemed to be intentionally abstract and intimidating. And what's worse, it was a homework assignment. She remembers that it took an emergency trip to the library to reassure her that much glorious rhymed verse exists from an earlier time when poetry was widely popular and a lot more fun. LIVE VERSE won't bring back the 1870's, but it won't be a homework assignment, either.

Pincus Ellen Griffith’s “Live Verse” is a remarkably American collection of poetry and prose about blues, jazz, and rock ‘n roll; baseball, trains, and cowboys; families, government, and business. Whether singing the praises of Eubie Blake, Carl Perkins, New Orleans, or the Los Angeles Dodgers; telling charming stories of her childhood and of raising her own children; or mercilessly skewering atavistic politicians, insatiable corporations, or today's celebration of ignorance over knowledge, Ms. Griffith consistently delivers her messages with compassion, humor, and pinpoint accuracy. I recommend “Live Verse” not only for its brilliant insights, but for its comprehensive view of American life over the past half century.

A pioneer for her time, and for all times. The book moves along in harmonic fashion, and once you join the iambic pentameter of her literary style, you too will laugh at the wonderful life she led. An inspirationfor all women, young and old, who follow their hearts on their journey through life.

In a folk artist's manner, Ellen Griffith has combined these into a poetry covering topics like class inequality, war, media coverage and baseball. The manner is a mixture of Will Rogers and Pete Seeger. The poems show both a love for America and the love to criticize the inequities and the vices within our great country. A wonderful read.

Best PDF Ebook Torn: The Story of an Undeserving Wallaby Drowning in a Septic Tank., by Mr. Simon John Williams

The book is a humorous memoir of the laughs, confusion and observations during transplantation from my life in Australia to the USA to start my first job twenty years ago. This is juxtaposed against the sadness I had in the present day living with the abduction of my only son to Brazil five years ago. Only a bloody Australian would be crazy enough to write a funny book about their child’s abduction but when everything in your life is taken from you, you had better get busy laughing or there will be nothing left of you if the moment comes to see your child again. And miraculously for me that moment happened.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Awesome sarcasm By SNJ Loved the humor in this book. Didn't love all of the seppo jokes. But still an interesting look at America from another perspective. Worth the read for sure!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Funny and serious By Sid Nuncius I enjoyed this book. I was sent a copy for review and although it has its flaws, I found it generally well-written, funny in places and with a good many shrewd observations to make.Simon Williams tells the story of how, as an Australian from a small town in Queensland, he ended up working as a physiotherapist in Florida. His often humorous experiences of the USA and its people and his infatuation with playing rugby make up the majority of the book, but his motivation for writing it was really to expose the terrible pain and injustice he has suffered as his wife illegally abducted his son to Brazil, and the impotence of any agency to help. It's a harrowing tale and one to make you very angry on his behalf - and on behalf of others who have suffered similarly - but the bulk of the book is a rather Bill Bryson-esque account of the quirks of the USA as seen by an outsider. These - especially his observations on the health system - are shrewd and witty, and the whole book has a humorous tone to it which I enjoyed.I have to say that the story of his son's abduction seemed oddly placed here and because of its scattered nature it lost some of its impact for me, but overall it's a very enjoyable, readable book. Some interest in rugby would help but it's not essential, and I can recommend this: it made me smile a lot and says important things, too.

Comical and Heartwrenching By ReadingOtherPeople I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a book called "Torn: The Story of an Undeserving Wallaby Drowning in a Septic Tank." I knew what a wallaby was, and I know a bit about Australia, but nothing prepared me for Simon Williams' charming and heart-wrenching tale of tragedy and hope.Written in a sort of stream of consciousness type style, Simon Williams tells a story that is not only true, but extremely insightful. There are equal parts humor and sadness, but Williams manages to tie in all of his seemingly random thought processes into one cohesive whole memoir.Williams details his move from the land down under to the US to work. These experiences are highlighted with wit and endearing banter. Contrary to these light, comical experiences is the author's terrible experience of the abduction of his son in Brazil. It is this contrast between life's literal highest highs and lowest lows that Williams shines as an author. He richly describes the events that befall him in a non-victim kind of way. He acknowledges that life is unfair, and if humor is not a part of your daily regime, a living existence could be fatal. As you know, I enjoy books where I learn something new about life, be it fictional or based on real events. In Torn, Simon Williams captivated my attention with ever single Australian-laden word and turn of phrase.

PRAISE FOR *ELIOT’S VIOLIN*: “Kevin Rabas continues to poetically explore what it means to have wonder in the world with his collection. He explores childhood, children growing up, growing old, and the power we each have in whatever station in life we find ourselves. Kevin's poems about his son show how magic can be found in a bowstring or a cellphone: 'blue and white fire / in one cupped palm.' Also poems about Kevin's own childhood and formative years convey the magic and tragedy of what being human means, surrounded by 'the shadows of bullies right outside.' Just as his poem "Kansas City" explains, ‘That kid. He does us good.’" ~ Dennis Etzel Jr. ** Note: Despite what is listed below, this title is published by Oil Hill Press (El Dorado, KS), John Jenkinson, editor. **

Before the dawn of political correctness and the almost choking fear of offending someone, there was a brand of humor that deemed no one sacred. In the world of law enforcement lived those who dared to trample upon everything from the sanctity of motherhood to race and religion. There were no exemptions or exclusions and anyone could fall prey to a trivial barb or a very elaborate prank. Cartoons, poems, letters and living creatures from cats to snakes were just a few of the "tools" of the police humor trade. Of course, the calls for assistance often provided some moments of side splitting laughter and comic relief. The mere twisting of a single word could alter the response to call or cause dozens of police cars to rush, with lights flashing and sirens sounding, to a home or business. Seconds later they could be left scratching their heads and asking how a bird became a burglar. Back in those bygone days of policing, a tough guy who boasted, "If you didn't have that badge and gun, I'd stomp your ass," often found his wish granted. And, on some of those occasions when the badge and gun came off, bets were placed on the outcome.

By Deborra Wagster As an FOP wife whose husband was "on the job" at the same time as the author and contributors, I have heard my fair share of stories. Some in the book were amusing and interesting, but feel some were juvenile. Others without connection to officers who were on duty during this time may find much of the book to be politically incorrect and perhaps the book or the ad for the book should have some sort of disclaimer to warn of this.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Really funny, one problem By C. Gilbert Really cute and funny - I love the condiment stickers and foil-pouch envelopes. They're great until you try to use them. The cards don't fit in the envelopes! You have to re-fold the top flap a little higher up to get it to close. Not the end of the world, I know, but it doesn't look very nice once the envelope is sealed.

The only problem is that the yellow corn taco shell card is a little too big for the envelope but I fixed that by just cutting a tiny bit of it off with scissors and it works just fine.

“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer.  You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.” – Stuart Scott The fearless, intimate, and inspiring story behind ESPN anchor Stuart Scott’s unrelenting fight against cancer, with a foreword by Robin Roberts. Shortly before he passed away, on January 4, 2015, Stuart Scott completed work on this memoir. It was both a labor of love and a love letter to life itself. Not only did Stuart relate his personal story—his childhood in North Carolina, his supportive family, his athletic escapades, his on-the-job training as a fledgling sportscaster, his being hired and eventual triumphs at ESPN—he shared his intimate struggles to keep his story going. Struck by appendiceal cancer in 2007, Stuart battled this rare disease with an unimaginable tenacity and vigor. Countless surgeries, enervating chemotherapies, endless shuttling from home to hospital to office and back—Stuart continued defying fate, pushing himself through exercises and workout routines that kept him strong. He wanted to be there for his teenage daughters, Sydni and Taelor, not simply as their dad, but as an immutable example of determination and courage. Every Day I Fight is a saga of love, an inspiration to us all. From the Hardcover edition.

Every Day I Fight, by Stuart Scott, Larry Platt

Review

“In Every Day I Fight, ESPN anchor Stuart Scott’s posthumous memoir, his voice is as distinctive and memorable as it ever was on-air.” – Sherryl Connelly, New York Daily News

"There’s a lot of pain and sadness within the covers of this book, but there’s inspiration and humor, too. To the very end, Scott was, as he would say, “cooler than the other side of the pillow." —Booklist"If you get that dire diagnosis, I hope by seeing Stu in action, that it will take away some of the anxiety that you can't live your life, that you can't work out, that you can't work. And seeing him thriving—not surviving, but thriving—I think people will take that and apply it to whatever it is that they are faced with." —Robin Roberts"There are a lot of people who see [Scott] as a beacon of light, and something that they can relate to....I hear from people every day. He's on TV and he's doing what he loves. They take strength from the fact that he has not been paralyzed by his illness and that he has decided to live life on his own terms." —Doug Ulman, president and CEO of the Livestrong Foundation"I thought I knew what tough was. But, in his battle with cancer, Stuart Scott is the strongest person I know. The courage he shows in Every Day I Fight will inspire you, as he has inspired me." —Charles Barkley"I've known Stuart Scott since we were undergrads at UNC and I watched him become a groundbreaking sportscaster. But Every Day I Fight shows his greatest accomplishment: as a dad, who fights for his daughters every day. As a journalist, a dad and a cancer fighter, there's no quit in Stuart." —Michael Jordan

About the Author Stuart Scott’s groundbreaking style made him one of television’s most influential broadcasters. As an anchor and commentator for SportsCenter, he became the face of ESPN, the most popular and recognized anchor of his generation. As lead host of the NBA on ESPN and ABC, as well as a host of Monday Night Football on ESPN, Scott redefined the telecasting of modern sports events. He received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the 2014 ESPY ceremony. Stuart Scott died in January 2015.Larry Platt is the former editor of Philadelphia magazine and the Philadelphia Daily News. He is the author of Only the Strong Survive: The Odyssey of Allen Iverson and coauthor of Just Tell Me I Can’t: How Jamie Moyer Defied the Radar Gun and Defeated Time. His writing has appeared in GQ, New York, The New York Times Magazine, and Sports Illustrated, among other publications. He lives outside Philadelphia with his wife, Bet.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. INTRODUCTION   WHY I FIGHT  My phone was blowing up. The text messages were coming nonstop, and, with each one, I was feeling more and more like an imposter. There were hundreds of them, almost all using words like “courageous,” “brave,” “inspirational.” Only I felt like none of those things. No, the only thing I felt, the only thing I’ve ever felt since the day in 2007 I learned that what I thought was appendicitis was actually a rare form of cancer, was . . . fear. To readers of that morning’s New York Times, I may have seemed courageous. But trust me: I ain’t courageous. I just don’t want to die. The article, on this March day in 2014, was headlined “A Story of Perseverance: ESPN Anchor’s Private Battle with Cancer Becomes a Public One” and it had all the background. It had the three surgeries that had removed my appendix, large intestine, some lymph nodes, other organs; the fifty-eight infusions of chemotherapy I’d undergone to that point; the Wound VAC that drained the foot-long scar that ran from chest to belly button and that had taken two months to heal after a ten-hour surgery in the fall of 2013. And it had me wearing a black “Everyday I Fight” T-shirt at the mixed martial arts studio near my Connecticut home, where I go straight from chemotherapy to jab and hook and kick until I collapse, drained. But that’s not courage. That’s survival. When cancer storms into your life, you have a choice: fight, or curl up and just be a cancer patient. That doesn’t mean I don’t have my moments. There are times when I say to myself, It’s too much, I don’t have the energy for this fight. There are times I bawl my eyes out and tell my girlfriend, Kristin, who has slept on a cot by my bedside throughout countless hospital stays, “I’m scared, I’m really scared.” I come from jockdom; what guy likes being that vulnerable? I have many such moments, but they’re not the last moment I have. And they’re not my most enduring moments.Because having cancer, it turns out, is more complicated than you’d think. Like any great opponent, cancer is in your face. It practices the art of intimidation. It gets inside your head and messes with your thinking. It takes its toll on you physically, but the real burden is mental. I’ve told my doctors I don’t want to know my prognosis: “I’m not interested in hearing how long you think I might have.” That would be just another thing to be frightened of and obsess over. But let’s keep this real. I’m forty-nine. There’s a good chance I’m going to die a helluva lot earlier than I ever wanted to. There’s a good chance I’m going to die soon. And I know it. I know it every moment of every day. And that reality is never not with me.So this book is a chronicle of my fight against cancer, but it’s even more than that. It’s really a memoir of a life well fought; in sports, the media, or the cancer ward, the one true thing I’ve learned is that life is hard but that there is redemption in the struggle.Cancer is just the latest, and most terrifying, fight. Though I hate this most unwanted of companions, I respect it for its power—and there are even times when I’m grateful for what it’s given me. Don’t get me wrong: From day one, I was committed to beating it. But along the way, I’ve learned how paradoxical the relationship between patient and disease really is; cancer turns the old cliché on its head. It can kill you and make you stronger, all at the same time. That’s why words like “brave” don’t really apply when confronting cancer. When you first hear that you have it—a doctor prefaced breaking the news to me by saying, “Things just got more complicated”—you say to yourself: I’m going to die. And, in my case, the very next thought was even more of a sledgehammer: I won’t be here for my two daughters. After a while, once the sting subsides, you ask yourself: How do I fight cancer? Here’s what I knew about cancer: You get it, you die. But I’d always been a competitive sonofabitch. I turned down a couple of football scholarships out of high school to attend my dream school, the University of North Carolina, where I was friendly with Michael Jordan before he was the greatest who ever lived; I planned on being a walk-on wide receiver there, but an eye disease, keratoconus, ended my collegiate career before it began. As a sports broadcaster debuting on ESPN in the early nineties, I brought the in-your-face attitude of the music I came up on— hip-hop—to SportsCenter. That wasn’t a planned thing; it was just who I was. Yeah, I’m young, I’m African-American, and I’m telling you about this game like I’m talking trash with my boys back home: “Man, Mike about to put it on these boys! Mike about to mess them up!” Even my most famous catchphrase—Boo-yah!— was all about capturing those adrenaline-fueled moments of intimidation in sports.Yet behind the on-air bravado was a craftsman; I actually kept a running chart of how many statistics colleagues like Keith Olbermann, Dan Patrick, and Chris “Boomer” Berman used in their broadcasts because I was determined to lead the nation in giving the audience cold, hard facts behind the loudness. You could hate me for my style, but my substance was going to be beyond reproach. On the football field or the TV set, the only way I knew how to succeed was to push myself, to be stronger than my opponent, to work harder. But now there I was, forty-two years old, and the opponent before me was a freakin’ assassin. How do you work harder than cancer? I didn’t know. But when I want to work hard, I go to the gym. After my first four-hour chemo treatment, I was hooked up to a two-day chemo drip in a little bag that attached to a port in my stomach—and thirty minutes later, I was in the gym. On the elliptical machine, I looked down and noticed the name of the medicine dripping into my body: It was called fluorouracil, or 5-FU for short.I smiled, said a little prayer, and then stuck that pack into the pocket of my gym shorts and said to myself: FU, cancer. The athlete in me realized: This thing growing inside me was trying to kick my ass. Well, I’ve gotta hit first and kick its ass. So I attacked the elliptical and made a promise to myself: From then on, I’d be working out within thirty minutes of each chemo treatment. Later, I’d skip the gym—there were too many inquiries about my health; they were well-meaning, but we members of the alternative universe that is CancerWorld chuckle at the overly earnest, stage-whispered “how you feeling” queries meant to convey deep concern—and instead I started doing P90X or mixed martial arts in the living room of my house. From day one, working out was my own private “FU” to cancer.Because cancer is trying to rob the most precious thing in the world to me: time with my daughters, Sydni, fifteen, and Taelor, nineteen. They’re why I say “FU” to cancer every day. When I have those moments—when I say to myself, This is too hard, I’m too tired to go on—I remind myself that cancer forced me to reconsider my life’s goal and that I haven’t reached it yet: I want to walk Taelor and Sydni down the aisle. I don’t want them with an uncle or some father figure; that’s my place.I hate that a group of abnormal cells inside my body has such control over my life. At the same time, I can’t deny that cancer has actually given me something. Because it gives every moment meaning. Because I’m on a time clock and I don’t know what that time clock says. And no moments are deeper than those with my knuckleheaded daughters, for whom I fight every day.   A few weeks ago, Sydni came home—I share custody with my ex-wife—and asked if her girlfriends could come over and get ready with her for that night’s dance. And, of course, could I drive them to it?Hell, yes. “Do you want me to get some chips?” I called to her.“Sure, Dad,” she said. “Get some chips.” I could almost hear the eye roll through her closed bedroom door. Sydni is beautiful and talented—she’s the soloist in her school choir—but she’s at that age where anything Dad does, by virtue of him having done it, is uncool. On our way to the dance, the classic old-school tune “Cameosis” by Cameo came on. I reached for the volume and cranked it up, bellowing, “Now, this is when music was music!” and started singing along:  When you hear a group that moves you And feel it in your feet You ask yourself, hold on a minute What group now can this be.   The girls were all laughing, but Sydni wasn’t having it: “All right, Dad, whatever,” she said, insisting on a newer sound track. Kendrick Lamar came on, and now the girls were the ones singing, Sydni most of all, all of them smiling—they were showing the old man something. And I just looked at them through that rearview mirror and thought: This is so cool. I’ll never do something more important than this. Taking my daughter and her friends to a dance. This is what cancer does. It makes you look fresh at small moments and see them—really see them—as if for the first time. Pre-cancer, the ride to the dance would have been merely fun, and then I wouldn’t have thought about it again. But it wouldn’t have hit deep. It wouldn’t have seared into my mind’s eye the image of Sydni’s smiling, singing face.During Super Bowl week last year, I met Taelor for lunch in New York City. She was between classes at Barnard College. We sat there, my firstborn and I, as she chatted away: about an assignment for sociology, her roommate, a boy who might possibly like her. My phone was vibrating, again and again. The old me would have answered. There’s always time for my girls, after all, right? Not the cancer me. Let it go, man, the cancer me said. Nothing’s more important than being with this person who, together with Sydni, changed my life more than anyone. Later, Kristin would say: “I called you today,” and I’d reply: “I was with Taelor.” ’Nuff said.I’m not trying to “Kumbaya” you. My daughters are teenagers, man. Sydni is in perpetual eye-roll mode and Taelor is a typical college student; she’ll call for advice or to ask for money or to share a joke—only, of course, not as often as her needy Dad wishes she would. Teenage girls are a whole ’nother thing. They get angry with me, annoyed, embarrassed. Friends tell me they’ll come around. Teenage girls always come around to their dad eventually. But that well-meaning advice strikes to the heart of my fear. I don’t have “eventually.” The truth is, I’m not as afraid of dying as I am of not being here for my daughters’ aha moment. I’m on the clock and I want to be here when they get it—when they get what I got about my dad: that all the stuff he did that ticked me off ? He did that for me.Ray Scott was a federal postal inspector—the dude carried a gun and cuffs; I’d grow muscles when the neighborhood kids would see him. He promised his four kids that he’d pay our college tuition if we maintained a 2.0 grade point average. After my sophomore year, I was skating along with a 2.7. Dad said he was restructuring our deal—he’d only pay if I kept a 3.0 or better. “That’s crap,” I said. That wasn’t the deal. It wasn’t fair—a common refrain from my teenagers today. But then something happened: In the fall of my junior year, I was heavily involved with my fraternity, I played club football, and I posted a 3.2 GPA. The next semester, I upped that to 3.6. The following one, 3.4. I remained pissed until years later, when it dawned on me: Dad knew I was better than a 2.7 student. And he knew I needed to be pushed. Funny, isn’t it, how much smarter our dads are when we get older? That was my aha moment about my dad. Will Sydni and Taelor have theirs about me in time? Maybe that’s self ish of me to wonder. Maybe their aha moment about me is for them—not me. But I can’t help myself. I want them to realize that everything I do, I do with their best interests at heart—and I want that to happen while I’m still around for them to talk to me about it, like I did with my dad. This is what cancer does. It makes everything profound. It makes everything urgent.   A couple of years ago, during a game of the NBA Finals, a couple of security guards were escorting Sydni, Taelor, and me through the concourse; we were on our way to see the family of a friend who was an NBA executive. Because I’m on TV, I tend to get recognized when I’m out, but this was a sports-centric crowd, so I was being swarmed. As fans saw me, they started to call to me. Some asked for autographs. One guy planted himself in front of me.“Sorry, man,” I said, “can’t—in a hurry,” as security helped us sidestep him.“You’re an asshole!” he called out.I laughed. Taelor was shocked: “Dad, that guy called you an asshole!” she exclaimed. “I mean, you can be an asshole, but he doesn’t know that!”I cracked up. But back at SportsCenter, the anecdote prompted a bull session hypothetical. A bunch of middle-aged sportscasters started to wonder: What would it take for each of us to throw down?“Man, someone calling me a name or cross-eyed, that’s funny,” I said. “That ain’t worth stepping outside.”Now, I know how to fight. I train. I know how to punch, how to kick. But you’re not going to call me a name and get me to fight. Then the question came: What would you do if someone called one of your daughters a name? I paused. “I’d put him down,” I said. That might sound like a contradiction, but it’s actually very calculated. I want my girls to see me walk away if someone calls me a name. But I also want them to know that I won’t let anybody mess with them. I want them to know I’ll protect them. Maybe I’m wrong. But I feel this overwhelming need to show them how much I’m willing to fight for them. And that’s what I’m doing every day against cancer: fighting for them. This book is about my fight against cancer, yes, but it’s also about why I fight, whom I’m fighting for, and how I find the energy to stay in the ring. It’s also about the central paradox of that fight: You hate this thing inside you. You want to rid your body of it. At the same time, you’re aware of what it’s done to you: how it gives you an urgency to live—really live—every day; how it makes you see the profound in the everyday; how it teaches patience and humility. The contradiction is as top-of-mind as the fact of the cancer itself: Cancer can kill you, but it can also make you the man you always wanted to be.

There is some really emotional powerful messages shared by Stuart Scott about how to live life to the fullest and how to understand what someone with cancer is going through. I don't say that to mean, that you actually know how someone feels physically or even emotionally, but it explains well the perspective of someone going through cancer and was really eye opening. I have a cousin who was recently diagnosed and this book encouraged me to open up a dialogue and ask him what kind of support works for him instead of offering support he may not want. Often it was the unsolicited quick acts that had the most impact on Scott.I thought this book would be a memoir about all of the cool sports things that Stuart Scott has been able to do in his life, but I'm glad it didn't focus on that aspect of his life, although there are some cool stories. Instead, Scott talks about the love he has for life, for his family, and for those around him. He talks about how the most meaningful conversations he has had with Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, etc. are about their kids and being a dad. This book does a great job of sounding like it is coming right from Stuart's mouth. You'll often hear his voice in your mind as you read some of the passages, especially when he talks about where he got some of his more well known catchphrases. The biggest takeaway from this book is how you live life, with cancer or not. Stuart's famous speech about how you beat cancer with the way you live is really powerful and invokes the reader to consider how they live and what they focus on in life. This is a tremendously inspiring book about living life to the fullest and always fighting for what is most important to you.

He's always been a huge inspiration (and yes, I'm partial, I'm from NC)! I laughed, I cried, and I learned that if this man can kick cancer's ass with just grace and dignity, then there isn't anything I can't do! This book is a wonderful reminder of the important things in life! The world lost a wonderful man when he died, but in his beautiful words "When you die, it does not mean you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live." Stuart Scott didn't lose to cancer!

I was 18/19 years old with my first apartment living the “American Dream”. I know that sounds a little dramatic, but moving out on your own for the first time felt like a dream. Back to Stu…I remember being mesmerized by his words and his technique of reporting the sports updates. I wasn’t familiar with who or what teams were in the playoffs but Stuart had a way of making you want to learn more about sports. Stuart Scott played himself on an episode of one of my favorite shows, Soulfood. How cool is that?Every day I Fight invites readers behind the curtain of Stuart Scott’s life. Stuart Scott was never a person to mince his words, so I knew he was going to give it straight – no filters. The beginning of the book Stuart shared a lot of his childhood and the lessons that he learned along the way. He told stories of his father and other people that help shaped him into the man he was. Wow… I had to pause for a minute. THE MAN HE WAS… I get choked up when I think about the word WAS when I refer to Stuart Scott.I went back and forth listening to the audio version and reading the hardcover copy of this book. I was also granted permission to read the electronic arc (Advance Readers Copy) of the book, but there are some books that you need to hold in your hand, and this book is one of them. I also have to say that Adam Lazarre-White did an exceptional job narrating the audiobook version. There were a few times I had to pause the audio, because he sounded and captured the essence of Stuart Scott so much I thought it was Stuart talking to me.Stuart Scott shares with readers the moment he found out he had cancer, the treatments he went through, and how his family & friends stepped up to the plate to be there for him. Scott did make it clear that was no need to go into graphic details of everything he endured during his fight with cancer. The things he did share was more than enough to give us an idea of what he went through on a daily basis. Stuart Scott was a father first – the love he shared for his girls was immeasurable.Stuart Scott endured a lot with his bout with cancer, but every day he rose to the occasion of Life. The book will leave readers with an important message – Do the things that matter in your life! Show up for Life!!Thank you, Stuart Scott for leaving your fans with gems that they will hold on to for the rest of their days. You will continue to live in our hearts. Forever.

Richard Seff has spent 60 years in the theatrical jungle as actor, playwright, librettist, agent, investor and now memoirist. He first acted professionally in 1946 and his last engagement onstage was in 2006. He took a 22 year leave of absence from the stage after a long run on Broadway in support of Claude Rains and on tour with Edward G. Robinson in the prize winning Darkness At Noon. During those 22 years he represented artists in the musical theatre. He left the talent agency in 1974 at the height of his career to return to the stage. In the 30 years that have followed, he’s appeared in some 25 plays, for one of which (Angels Fall) he won the Carbonell Award for ‘Best Supporting Actor In A Play’. He’s been in 7 feature films and over 50 television series, soap operas, TV films and mini-series. He is the author of Paris Is Out! which brightened Broadway in 1970 for 104 performances. The musical Shine! for which he wrote the book, won a National Music Theatre Network Award in 2001 and has been published by Samuel French, Inc. and recorded by Original Cast Records. Hit the dressing rooms with him and discover what goes on backstage, in the wings, and behind closed doors. Learn about theatre investing in the Golden Age, when one could buy a piece of a show in the intermission on opening night. He’s got tales to tell! Join him on this fun filled odyssey through the decades in shows starring Alan Alda, Ethel Merman, Chita Rivera, Dick Van Dyke, William Hurt, Christopher Reeve, Richard Thomas, Judd Hirsch, Jason Robards, in others directed by Hal Prince and written by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Come on along and listen to — well, you know what. He’s Got Tales to Tell! “Richard Seff’s career in the theatre represents active participation as agent, producing associate, librettist, and, ultimately, as a skilled actor … In fact, he was responsible for recommending me to, among others, John Kander and James and William Goldman, to take over the direction of A Family Affair in Philadelphia on its way to Broadway … It turns out he’s a fine writer as well, and this chronicle of an unusual and varied life in the theatre makes excellent and valuable reading.” — Hal Prince “Oh, what a journey we’ve had. I thank Richard Seff for helping mold the life that I am still enjoying today. To live it again, through his own words, fills my heart.” — Chita Rivera “He is a clever old sausage. Far more interesting to see written from his perspective than from a grander vantage point. Far more revealing and very redolent of the profession and its various joys, tribulations, and humiliations. Well done!” — Emma Thompson “A very interesting look at our business from an angle most people never are aware of, including those who are most visibly involved.” — Alan Alda “For years Richard Seff has been one of the wittiest raconteurs on the Rialto, but a pleasure known only to the cognoscenti. Now he has gone public with a biographical reminiscence brimming with anecdota, insight and intelligence. Bravo!” — Stefan Kanfer author of Ball of Fire

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It is a lively, lovely read By Heroicman Normally the theater is not my standard reading material, but I found this a very entertaining and heart warming book. Mr. Seff knows the business well and has a knack with words. The result is an entertaining and often funny look at the "behind the scenes" happenings in modern theater. Filled with many well know personalities, even to this non-theater buff, the book leaves one wishing they had been there. I particularly enjoyed the sense of getting to know Mr. Seff and all his comrades, and was reluctant to put the book down and no longer be part of their lives.

By Bert Cohen I am not in theatre, but I love going to theatre, and after reading Richard Seff's informed and informative memoir, I feel I've just relived the last 50 years of my life. He has captured the Golden Age of Broadway, and put it all down with insight, humor, and great joy. I've seen so many of the shows with which he was involved, but it was great fun 'going backstage' with him, eavesdropping and listening in on all those goings on.Bert Cohen

Japely If you're interested in what it's like to live your life in the theater, you should read this book.I wanted to read a book highlighting some of the past fifty years of work from someone who was truly on the inside, and I'm glad I picked this up. It's a fast paced tour of the life of a talent who didn't chase leading roles but enjoyed the work of a character actor, playwright, agent, and investor in all aspects of theater. He describes life on the road, in summer stock, and on Broadway with many of the stars of the last half century. It's a page-turning story of someone whose heart was in the theater and made a fascinating life out of it.Well recommended.
