Poetry. "Allie Marini Batts' Before Fire: Divorce Poems is a steel-girded elegy that instructs, 'I have taught you well / how to leave me.' Batts' speaker masterfully mourns and acts; she is the voice of the put upon wife but also the wanderer who knows her secret freedoms. In these embodied words, littered with domestic menageries such as 'wings fluttering like sheaves of unpaid bills,' it is explicit that divorce has given more than it has taken. Separation brings about Batts' stunning linguistic transparency in stanzas like, 'The house smells of smoke / and spilled drinks, your loud stories / and my lonely heart.' BEFORE FIRE is an exquisite dissection of femininity and feminism, a blue flame that simultaneously combusts and illuminates our definition of 'wife.'"—Sandra Marchetti, author of Confluence and The Canopy

Before Fire, resonates and haunts with such awe-inspiring poems you will not soon forget By aerolls Robert Cormie once said, “It’s amazing that the heart makes no noise when it cracks.”Batts' poems in Before Fire are vivid pieces, reflections from the ash after the painful dissolution of a marriage. The theme of Batts book could be summed up in this one line, from “So Close,” “one pause, all it takes, eaten alive.” It’s as if this stunning line encapsulates the evolution of the speaker’s marriage. Its lines and poems like “ringfinger” in this heart-wrenching yet stirring collection that just slayed me. But not all poems can be joyous and at least Allie Marini Batts found a voice in the sadness; sparked from former flames, Before Fire, resonates and haunts with such awe-inspiring poems like “The Loneliest Place in The World Is In a Crowded Room With You,” you will not soon forget.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Transformational Fire By Karrie Higgins Allie Marini Batts absolutely slays in these poems of mourning, heartbreak, rage, and love in the wake of divorce. As a wife, she is a caged bird, as in "So Close," where husbands "cannot know what it is to be a parakeet,/caged, wings clipped, performing an eggshell ballet." As a divorcee, she is overcome by the loss of her husband, as in "Unmade": "I can't wash the sheets, make the bed, or even fluff the pillows: if I/do, you'll be gone forever ... " The poems are raw, visceral, and painful, but the cumulative effect is more gain than loss. Reading these poems is witnessing a woman walking through a transformational fire.
