Poet and artist Alice Lee retraces her life in Alaska, China, Italy and elsewhere, exploring in this memoir how she reinvents herself, refusing to be defined by her genetic inheritance. While the family illnesses of schizophrenia and ataxia are the stones that weight her shoulders, Lee wears the necklace with grace. She travels, teaches, raises two daughters, creates art, finds love and writes of houses, floods and sex as part of her personal mythology. Hers is a vision of the whole woman with a past, a voice, responsibilities and an open heart.

Quiet and reflective By small monkey This is a meditative blend of poetry and prose that allows the narrator to look over her adulthood as a traveler, parent, lover, teacher, and artist. Easily readable in an afternoon, Necklace of Stones provides insights into the subject's challenges with a set of hereditary conditions that, while limiting in the long run, also provide her with different and important perspectives.

Adam Borstein is a formerly struggling writer and performer who saw the light, quit, and went to law school. In his first collection of essays, he takes you on his odd journey from comic to corporate lawyer and touches on themes of guilt, obligation, family and God...and other light fare from the Jewish gastro-literary diet. And from stage to studio law department, Borstein attempts to find humor in the painful, mundane lessons of life, in the manner of David Sedaris, David Rakoff and other really great writers who aren't named David.

By Laurie Bernhard I read this book in one sitting after hearing about it from a friend. The humor could be kind of dark at times, but that made it feel very real and honest.I really felt like I got to know the author and appreciated getting a glimpse into his journey from childhood through adulthood. There were moments that felt repetitive, with information repeated from one chapter to the next, rather than blended together to form a continuous narrative. It was nice to see that the author, who had his share of personal and family dysfunction, could reach adulthood not blaming others, but with humor and insight. Well done.

Definitely worth reading By Leslie White I devoured this book in 2 sittings, perhaps because I identified so much with the author, although most of the circumstances of our lives are different. Dysfunction and addiction are great fodder for humor for those who live to tell the tale. Adam Borstein has clearly honed some mad skills at describing some of life's ugly truths by packaging them inside a wry smile. There are moments of brilliance in this book.(There are also far too many typos, and I wish I could have proofread it before it went "to print", so I could have given it all 5 stars.) Even though he's "kvetching", he's also sharing some real hard-won wisdom and sharing his true appreciation for life's blessings, which is also fun to identify with. I hope to read more from this author.

Borstein throws his hat into the jewish, middle class, what do I really have to complain about, memoir ring with a profane, original vengeance. With astute and painful observation of his family and himself, Borstein pinpoints the ugly truth of growing up relatively privileged and relatively talented--mediocrity sometimes feels like a fate worse than death. That Borstein relinquished his unsuccessful acting and writing career for a successful one as an entertainment lawyer seems to have freed him from the fears that kept his creativity in check. Maybe he should pitch a script about that guy. Keep it up, Adam.

With eyes wide open to the world around her, Mary Anne Morefield explores hedgerow and pasture, the plants and animals and humans that inhabit an 18th-century Pennsylvania farm. She broadens her search to the wider world of ideas, to other cultures, to Aleppo and the West Bank. She looks directly at Hurricane Sandy and sits beside death. She examines the region of widowhood, laces up her hiking boots and explores new territory in the flora, fauna and mountains of Arizona. There new colors catch her eye, new sounds enchant her ears. The poems speak to living deeply and fully in the world.

Earth, Grass, Trees and Stone: Poems, by Mary Anne Morefield

Review

"Mary Anne Morefield's debut collection overflows with the primacy of living, with the most elemental actions of groundhogs and lambs, with the exuberant colors of cholla and prickly pear, with what she rightly calls 'the ache of prayer.' Here is a writer offering wisdom and beauty, humbly teaching us how to live, how to journey toward death with a loved one, how to find strength, even joy, despite grief's shadow. These poems chant both praise and lamentation. They show us the way toward an earthly resurrection of sorts. They admonish the reader to 'Let yourself be air.' With a hard-earned gladness, they say 'Amen.'"

--Todd Davis, author of In the Kingdom of the Ditch and The Least of These

"Mary Anne Morefield's collection reflects the poet's meticulous observation of the natural world, but the poems belie their sometimes beautiful surfaces. Their subjects are as various as the forms they take (haibun, sonnet, ode, and more) and encompass vastly different geographies. This is true of the physical worlds the poems evoke: Pennsylvania's woods, hills, and farmlands and Arizona's desert landscape. This is also true of the psychic space they conjure, one often marked by loss, both personal and public. Beginning with the opening, title poem and extended in the third, the book contains a number of elegies and could be read as a moving lament for a lost spouse. Yet inside the elegy resides the ode, and these poems insist that we remember the full range of human experience: 'Rain or Sun? Must I Choose/between them?' the poet asks at the conclusion of one of her poems. The answer the collection overwhelmingly suggests is: No. The point is not to 'choose' but rather to learn to live 'in the space between/the nothing, the everything, the all.'"

--Shara McCallum, poet

"These poems celebrate and mourn, ache and ask. Morefield has received her life, moment by moment, in all its fullness, and she gives it back to us in a voice of gentle and reflective contemplation."

--Margaret Gibson, author of Broken Cup

About the Author Born and raised in the Mid-West, Mary Anne Morefield lives a tri-partite life in Central Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Chautauqua, New York. She served as Vice President of The Writers’ Center, and as President of the Chautauqua Literary Arts Friends. Mary Anne is a member of the Seminary Ridge Foundation in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which oversees the Seminary Ridge Museum. Her work has appeared in various journals, including Poet Lore, Poetry East, Atlanta Review, The MacGuffin and Chautauqua. Her poem, “Requiem,” will be set to music for the Susquehanna Chorale in 2015 by Bob Chilcott. For more information, go to www.maryannemorefield.com.

EARTH, GRASS, TREES AND STONE IS BRILLIANT, FIERCE AND TENDER By Marian Dornell In the opening lines of this finely-honed poetry collection, Earth, Grass, Trees and Stone, Mary Anne Morefield invites us to open our hearts to vulnerability and to immerse ourselves in the solitary dance after the death of a loved one. "For the first time since we left you / in this place of earth, grass, trees and stone, / I've come to hear its silence and its sounds, / to learn the beauty of granite . . .”After 9/11 Morefield reminds us that crickets and tree toads are "out there chirping, / filling up the dusk with song / beneath a sliver moon. /Earth, Grass, Trees and Stone coaxes the reader toward the light of its truth- that loss fuels the push of time's passage in such a way that we can emerge anew, reborn. Earth, Grass, Trees and Stone will be trusted companion and partner in any journey toward wholeness after any loss but most especially after the death of a loved one.Marian Cannon Dornell, author of Unicorn in Captivity

Like many Black Americans of the mid-twentieth century, Phyllis Lawson’s parents moved from their hometown of Livingston, Alabama to the big city in search of a better life. It wasn’t long before hardships left them unable to provide.

Soon, four-year-old Phyllis is plucked off her front porch, ripped away from the only family she knows, and sent to live with her grandmother Lula on an Alabama farm with no electricity, plumbing, or running water.

Heartbroken by her mother’s abandonment, Phyllis struggles to acclimate to her new surroundings. Thanks to the unconditional love of Grandma Lula and the healing powers of an old, tattered quilt, she is finally able to adjust to her new life.

In Quilt of Souls, Lawson documents her childhood growing up with the incredible woman who raised her and the powerful family heirloom that served as the cloth that would forever stitch their lives together.

With its tales of family, despair, freedom and hope, the true story behind this deeply personal memoir serves as the inspiration for http://www.quiltofsouls.com, where individuals share relics and stories from their own family histories.

A Blanket of Love By Teachernut Quilt of Souls was recommended to me by a friend who had it come up in her Facebook newsfeed, just the way so many books do. Knowing I was a quilter and historical fiction lover, she thought of me the minute she saw the posting. I am so indebted to her, because this book has become one of the favorites of my lifetime. It made me laugh, cry, get angry and remind me what forgiveness means. It is said that a “quilt is a blanket of love” and the love stitched together in this book shines through the incredibly touching story it tells. Miss Lula is exactly the kind of grandmother I want to be to my own grandchildren. I only wish my Grandma had told me the kind of family stories Miss Lula told her granddaughter, Phyllis. Another reviewer mentioned she saw connections to Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, and Ralph Emerson. For me it brought back memories of Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chaverini, The Last Runaway by Tracy Chelvalier, and Natchez Burning by Greg Isles. There are so many reasons to read this book. If you are a lover of American History, a quilter, a Detroiter, a grandma, a teacher, a storyteller, a writer or someone who just enjoys a marvelous book. This is the one for you.

The next time I started reading it..I finished it. It's a great book and I was so into it..I just didn't want it to end. I'm an avid reader..of fiction and books not dealing in anyway with slavery...this book took me out of my comfort zone and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed, cried and remembered.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Amazing story. By Linda Amazing is a word that is over used in today's vernacular, but it completely describes this book and the woman who wrote it. I found myself unwilling to put it down until I finished it. Grandma Lula was a force to be reckoned with but also a perfect example of a life lived from the highest reaches of the heart. I believe this book will make it's mark with the likes of The Help and The Color Purple. What a great read and an incredible story.

"A down-to-earth, inspiring book about the American promise fulfilled." -President Bill Clinton"Fascinating . . . . Made me wish I had been born in the Bronx." -Barbara Walters

A touching and provocative collection of memories that evoke the history of one of America's most influential boroughs-the Bronx-through some of its many success stories

The vivid oral histories in Arlene Alda's Just Kids from the Bronx reveal what it was like to grow up in the place that bred the influencers in just about every field of endeavor. The Bronx is where Michael Kay, the New York Yankees' play-by-play broadcaster, first experienced baseball; where J. Crew's CEO Millard ("Mickey") Drexler found his ambition; where Neil deGrasse Tyson and Dava Sobel fell in love with science; and where local music making inspired singer-songwriter Dion DiMucci and hip-hop's Grandmaster Melle Mel.

The parks, the pickup games, the tough and tender mothers, the politics, the gangs, the food-for people who grew up in the Bronx, childhood recollections are fresh. Arlene Alda's own Bronx memories were a jumping-off point from which to reminisce with a nun, a police officer, an urban planner, and with Al Pacino, Carl Reiner, Colin Powell, Maira Kalman, Bobby Bonilla, Mary Higgins Clark, and many other leading artists, athletes, scientists, and entrepreneurs-experiences spanning six decades of Bronx living. Alda then arranged these pieces of the past, from looking for violets along the banks of the Bronx River to the wake-up calls from teachers who recognized potential, into one great collective story, a filmlike portrait of the Bronx from the early twentieth century until today.

Just Kids from the Bronx: Telling It the Way It Was: An Oral History, by Arlene Alda

Review

“A complex, compelling oral history.” ―The Wall Street Journal

“More than 60 evocative oral histories . . . Just look at the angelic faces captured in the photographs that accompany each of the essays and ponder the question she [Arlene Alda] poses: 'How did they find a place for themselves?'” ―The New York Times

“A loving portrait of a borough . . . Every story is a gem.” ―The Huffington Post

“A nostalgic, sober and touching look at "Da Bronx" . . . will make you laugh and cry . . . . The four years it took to complete the book were worth the time; the project started "as a lark," and the end result is a home run, just like the kind Bobby Bonilla (also in the book) knows well.” ―Philadelphia Examiner

“An amazing cross section of personal stories that takes the reader through the Bronx in the eyes-and the words-of some of the borough's most famous sons and daughters.” ―New York Daily News

“A wonderful collection of oral histories . . . . Funny, poignant, revelatory.” ―Brooklyn Magazine

“Illuminating.” ―New York Observer

“A fabulous collection of 65 brief oral histories . . . . There are few readers who won't be touched by this affectionate look backward, which is as much about the universal state of childhood as the specific borough of the Bronx.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Whether it was the women's changing room at Loehmann's department store, riding a bike to Pelham Bay Park or running to an apartment block to fetch someone for a telephone call at the corner store, living in the Bronx made an impression on all of them as they worked their way up the American dream ladder. . . . Entertaining and informative cherished memories from a diverse group from the Bronx.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Arlene Alda must be a great listener because all kinds of amazing people tell her remarkable things in Just Kids from the Bronx. No matter where you grew up, you'll find this a down-to-earth, inspiring book about the American promise fulfilled.” ―President Bill Clinton

“Reading these interviews is akin to sitting on a stoop or a rooftop in any teeming Bronx neighborhood while voices with various accents, telling tales of various triumphs and adventures, rise up from the streets. Just Kids from the Bronx is both a cacophony and a chorus: a diverse collection of childhood memories that together form the singular, and very American, story of a remarkable place.” ―Alice McDermott, National Book Award for Fiction winner and author of New York Times bestselling novel Someone

“The childhood recollections in Arlene Alda's fascinating Just Kids from the Bronx run the gamut from surprisingly funny to painfully shocking. For anyone anywhere who has wanted to achieve their heart's desire, Just Kids from the Bronx shows the early days of successful risk takers from that borough who have done it, each in his or her own way. Made me wish I had been born in the Bronx.” ―Barbara Walters

“In these funny, intelligent, generous-spirited reminiscences, an extremely diverse group of Bronxites pay tribute to the borough where they were raised. Many of these are rags-to-riches impresarios whose riches are better known than their rags. Here, they give voice to the place that made them and in doing so, they make you fall in love with the Bronx, and with the resilience and moxy it seems to have bred in its sons and daughters. This is an enchanting collection.” ―Andrew Solomon, New York Times bestselling author of Far From the Tree and National Book Award-winning author of The Noonday Demon

“I was mesmerized reading about the childhoods of celebrities and leaders in fields from art to science, revealing the roots that launched their journeys from humble beginnings in the Bronx to extraordinary success. An eye-opener into what drives the creation of remarkable lives. I will long remember this wonderful book.” ―Walter Mischel, author of The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self-Control, Professor of Psychology, Columbia University

“Among the wonders of Arlene Alda's wondrous book is the stunning quality of the storytelling. Just Kids from the Bronx is a Bronx tale, to be sure--a collective picture of a place characterized by citizen yearnings to be elsewhere and the glorious discoveries and self-discoveries that come with staying put. But the parts that go into this whole are equally rich as pieces of literature. Nearly every one of these offerings, including the author's own, is a little work of art, each contributor foraging for the meaning and the music of a life. The result is America in a borough--at once hopeful, dangerous, regenerative, tough, joyous, and in the end, beautiful.” ―Roger Rosenblatt, New York Times bestselling author of Making Toast and of The Boy Detective: A New York Childhood

“A terrific oral history . . . . Of the thousands of books I've read, this is the one I wish I had written. [But] I'm not claiming that I would have done it as well as Arlene Alda. . . . Of interest even to those who were not lucky enough to grow up Bronx.” ―The Star-Ledger

About the Author Arlene Alda graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Hunter College, received a Fulbright Scholarship, and realized her dream of becoming a professional clarinetist, playing in the Houston Symphony under the baton of Leopold Stokowski. She switched careers when her children were young and became an award-winning photographer and author who has written nineteen books, including Just Kids from the Bronx. She is the mother of three daughters and the grandmother of eight. She and her husband, actor Alan Alda, live in New York City and Long Island.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Over the course of six compact discs there were enough good memories triggered to make the purchase worthwhile though I ... By I. Fleishman I have just finished listening to the audio cd version of this book and after reading some of the other reviews, it is reasonable to say that there is some truth to all of the reviews. I was hoping for a nostalgic look back at my home borough through the eyes and ears of other people raised in the Bronx. While there are some descriptive narratives of life in the Bronx, the balance weighs in favor of autobiographical statements, some of which are a bit narcissistic in tone. You might think in response to many of the stories...why are you telling me about how you were the smartest in your class or how you lived in a house that was nicer than a famous neighbor composer when I want to hear about how the Bronx impacted your life growing up. At the same time, if you were looking forward to reading vignettes about the lives and times of famous people who grew up in the Bronx with the emphasis on "famous", this collection will be satisfying. I didn't find the writing very capturing or compelling as suggest by the professional reviews. Over the course of six compact discs there were enough good memories triggered to make the purchase worthwhile though I would suggest tempering your expectations.

A tribute to The Bronx By Helpful Advice ‘Just Kids from the Bronx’ written by Arlene Alda is a nicely compiled collection of author’s memories about growing up in The Bronx, a book that shows how special place this borough of New York is, where many famous persons from each profession you can think of were born and raised, a real tribute to The Bronx.Alda gave us a possibility to travel with her back in time, to experience with her eyes everything that was happening in The Bronx during those years of her youth – the good and bad things, just like life is.And it’s not necessary to be from The Bronx, NY or even from US at all, author’s uncompromising love for neighborhood of her childhood, her unconditional love for The Bronx is obvious from each and every line of her work. Similar like I wrote yesterday in review for ‘Home’ by Carson Ellis, with this book Arlene Alda shows what home means – from people that live and events that happen around us, from the familiar sounds and even known smells that remind us to that special place, there is only one place on Earth that can be called home. And for Arlene Alda The Bronx is home. There are many known figures from past and present connected to The Bronx, the world of literature, movies, sports, politics and science have been marked by people who made first steps in The Bronx, who learned to survive in that special environment that eventually lead them to the top.For all those reasons, for all known and unknown people who were born and grown there, for all hard working members of The Bronx community that inspired author in writing this book, ‘Just Kids from the Bronx’ is valuable document about past and inspiration for future, a book you’ll be happy to spend time with.

If you are part of the Diaspora of New Yorkers with roots in The Bronx you will find this book more like your own personal DeLor By Grandma Bee I purchased this book at the Marcus Jewish Community Center here in Atlanta (sorry Amazon) where Arlene and Alan Alda were participating in the 24th Edition of The Book Festival of the MJCCA. The Alda's talk about her new book was spell binding. If you are part of the Diaspora of New Yorkers with roots in The Bronx you will find this book more like your own personal DeLorean time machine. The author interviewed countless people who grew up in The Bronx and went on to claim fame in all sorts of endeavors...Within their descriptions of growing up in The Bronx you will yourself time travel back to your memories.....some of them long forgotten. The little candy store which seemed to be on every other block and sold everything from comic books to the Jewish Daily Forward as well as amazingly tasty and generous malteds... .....The various iterations of baseball, stick ball and the like all played either in empty lots or cement paved playgrounds. This book brought back memories of my own time spent visiting my grandpa as well as my aunts and uncles who all lived in The Bronx. Thank you Mrs. Alda for helping me travel back to a special place and a special time.....

Yildirim's words are insightful and thought provoking. Is it her journey reflected through these emotional words that pull you in or that her words resonate your own journey so profoundly? Either way, you will find that it is skillfully and exquisitely written.

This is a book of poems by the Russell Scott Day whose destiny goals are to prevent atomic war, or what now better defines as the apocalyptic riot. I was honest in these poems that I wrote from the early 1970s till the mid 90s. Honesty and truth are not much preferred by many in power. Still if your writing doesn't get you in trouble you are probably not very good.

Psychiatrists Love Insanity, by Russell Day

From the Author This is the bravest book I could put together.  It takes more out of you to publish the truth than the fashionistas grasp when trying to figure out what to buy, or wear to get on with the in crowd.  Lots of people will hate you for telling the truth.  Truth is beauty is the old man's 20th Century quest for a life of the mind.  The greats like Shirer, Fussel, cummings, Kees, Litvinoff, Sherman (Dan) Foote, Mailer, Dos Passos, Kafka, in fiction and history and poetry prose and even photographs made or even just posed in give me warning and sometimes somehow made me bright eyed and laughing to read to my girl out loud.  There are sentences William Faulkner left laying around for us than can entertain for sometimes lifetimes.  Absolam, Absolam! is the greatest poem I've ever read.Well anyway, this is my main addition to the life of the mind., up to this point, yeah.

About the Author Mr. Day is fighting the Civil War from a small Fixed Base Operation at the end of a dead end street.  He has taken up the mission of building with shipping containers so there is a surplus of housing so a dollar will buy you a place to live regardless of your particular status or affiliations, and as if you had the right to privacy."Hey, I'm new in town."The wage slaves need to be living better together without theses invasions and steel will stop a bullet too.  It is just a benefit.  It is just a little thing."We like having a poet around who knows how to get things done."That was the best compliment Mr. Day remembers right now.All is for strength, wisdom, beauty, and humor.

Great Collection Of Poems By Bruce McLaren This is a really great collection of poems by one of the more laterally thinking artists out there, Russell Scott Day. Some of the poems are a mere four lines, some are four pages, but what holds it all together is the voice of RSD, with it's tales about people dying in school, the albino girl who hangs herself, through to the recurring theme of drinking and bars and alcohol, the voice of RSD is consistent and strong, squarely facing against the stream, This is a fine collection of poems and I would recommend them for anyone interested in poetry. Perhaps the farewell poem "The Outsider" ties everything together best, the view from a fighter, one who dares look straight into the eyes of the storm, to battle with the ambivalence of nature in the search to find the good hidden within.

While generally speaking, my childhood was more stable, I still experienced emotional and other abuse and grew up in a "broken family" without my mother. When we finally made a connection when I went to college, it was short lived. A series of heartbreaking events in her life and between us ended in her taking her life. The emotions you write so clearly about, are many of the same I experienced. Not only around her suicide (which for many years I was horrified for anyone to know and did not tell my children until they were older), but similar feelings toward my wonderful husband who I felt rescued me. And I also had seven children. I am fortunate that a few years ago, I was led to healing techniques that helped the heartache in my heart resolve. And have helped bring more balance to my life. May you have many more blessings and may the past be conquered permanently. I have felt very happy that I chose a new life for myself (that took a TON of work) and that my children will not suffer the things I did, and my family before me. Thank you for your honest story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Resolution for goodness By Debbie Bertoldo I read the book and was intrigued by the author’s constant desire to stay obedient to God. After tragic events, people generally blame God and go through their lives trying to figure out what they did to deserve such tragedies or give up trying to be good and do go good. Mechelle McDermott, instills a resolution for goodness in her readers that no matter what happens to us in this life, we always have a choice to listen to the Lord and to follow his safe plan for us.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Heart healing! By Bruce Mitchell I couldn't put this book down, it was so sincere and heartfelt. As I read everything the author had been through and overcome, I felt my own strength and relationship with God renew! I was also grateful for the insights I gained about how to handle suicide. Especially how God reaches out to help those who have taken their own life to be able to continue on their journey in heaven. Thanks Shelle for sharing your story! Jennifer Mitchell

(New and Improved Kindle Version! Bugs Fixed!!) ATTENTION REPUBLICANS! Please use this book to beat yourselves about the head until November 2008! DUMBASS is the complete collection of outrageous quotes from President George W Bush, the world's most powerful moron. Both hysterically funny and utterly infuriating, DUMBASS escorts readers humorously through years of George's verbal carnage and leaves us wondering HOW and WHY someone so stupid was permitted to usurp America and orchestrate the greatest foreign relations disaster in history. Not your average quote book, DUMBASS reflects W's own words through the unforgiving lens of popular culture and history as Carlysle utilizes clever quips, quotes, jokes and essays to draw greater (albeit disturbing) insight into the mind of this spectacularly and uniquely inept man. A scathing combination of humor and serious commentary, DUMBASS is a book you will read, re-read and share with your friends for years to come. (Or until the end of the world...whichever comes first) From the Publisher DUMBASS Just Got Smarter! (the book, not the president unfortunately) Horton Press is pleased to re-release DUMBASS in it's new revised and updated format. Her book may be incredibly funny, but Carlysle isn’t just playing for "yucks." DUMBASS skewers Bush with his own words while delivering an opportunity for thoughtful analysis of how the issues shaping our future are mirroring the issues that shaped our past. More than just a funny quote book, Carlysle hopes DUMBASS drives home a much bigger message, that America and the very principles she holds dear are in imminent danger. Carlysle says, "We are watching a poorly staged rendition of Wag the Dog, interpreted for the morbidly stupid and performed by the criminally insane." You may not agree with everything she has to say, but it’s hard not to enjoy the way she says it.

From the Author It's funny -- after 'lo these many years -- this man still gets my blood boiling. I covered every quote when re-editing and even though I have read them all a thousand times before, it still turns my stomach. The man is a reprobate and an ignoramous; I am as sure of it now as I was in 2004, when I started this whole thing. That's not to say the book isn't funny -- I still laugh out loud too. Watch for my next book due out late fall 2012. Cheers!

About the Author Acclaimed humorist, Jules Carlysle rose from the obscurity of the far-far-FAR North to become one of the most quoted names on the Internet. She lives her life peacefully with a cocker spaniel and a small magician.

Bush is made to look like a fool because he is a fool and then some. If you are a big fan of George W Bush than buying this book is probably a mistake but if you are like the rest of us, it's a lot of fun and quite informative. The fact is it's funny. period. It's nice to have for the cover alone. I'm giving it for Christmas gifts this year.

By Arsby The fellow who calls GW Bush a "superb manager" should consider that a good manager must be able to communicate his thoughts clearly. This book makes it abundantly clear that when he goes off-script, Bush can't string two coherent sentences together. He falls back on platitudes and cliches, and often gets them wrong. This book makes it clear that he really doesn't have a clue how to explain his administration's policies on complex matters like social security and health care. Perhaps "Dumbass" is too severe. "Incoherent Dimwit" might be better. There are almost 1200 Bush quotes in the book, and they are interspersed with (coherent) quotes from comedians, philosophers, and other politicians. The inclusion of those quotes are what makes this book a superbly entertaining read.It provides some good family fun. My kids and I get a kick out of finding and sharing some of the more stupid/incoherent/bizarre quotes. Makes for some great laughs.

23 of 27 people found the following review helpful. NOT FUNNY and WHO WOULD ENDORSE THIS are fooled again. By Michael A. Martin This book is a compilation of quotes from George W. Bush so you cannot spin the stupidity and downright ignorance of the most powerful man in the world that has his finger on the button. I started feeling sick very early on in the book. I do not expect perfection from my president when it comes to speaking English but I would like him to at least get a passing grade. George W Bush fails miserably on this subject and no matter how you spin it, this is the way I think he thinks. I laugh out loud at NOT FUNNY and WHO WOULD ENDORSE THIS. I just love it when "they" talk about National Defense or 9/11(how many are dead and wounded in Iraq by the way which had nothing to do with 9/11?) Oh, yes, and be sure to blame Clinton for the way Bush speaks. What a bunch of losers that try to spin that angle. jules carlysle has written in my opinion the best book on George W Bush yet because these are his own words in mostly chronological order. He has only himself to blame and no one else, period. He damages his credibility with each and every sentence he spouts out of his mouth. jules also puts sarcasm after many of the sayings and believe me, I understand each and every one of them. I also like the jokes in-between told by some of the finest one-liner comics in the business: Leno, Maher, Stewart, Letterman and a few others. This is a must read for everyone that knows what's really going on. We could have done better let me tell you. This book is a keeper. Buy it.

Ken Fontenot's fourth book of poems continues the fine balance of "things both practical and sublime" that he developed with subtlety and flare in his previous book, In a Kingdom of Birds-poems that explore the personal as well as the grander themes of life, with music presiding. "The songs of my time insist we listen attentively. / Take Fleetwood Mac. They incite, almost all melody, / which is the pie's filling, the alcohol in a mixed / drink." Images of childhood (gathering eggs, his grandfather's tractor, butchering a hog) and wildlife (hummingbirds, hyenas, lions, snakes) share meditations with figures encountered during a learned life-Beethoven, Goethe, Shakespeare, Mahler, Brahms, Bruckner, Buddha, Whitman, Melville, Aristotle. "Mostly, / though, I would have wanted Boccherini's dates: / 1743-1805. Was it a great time to be alive? / Of course, the music itself seems to say so." And throughout-he weighs and balances a lifetime of choices. "I wanted to have a distinct plan, yet it changed / as I changed. Even the pines were insightful. / And the cows returned to the barn in their slow way." Poets on Ken Fontenot's In a Kingdom of Birds "Fontenot's keen observation and original intelligence make his poetry well worth reading and a joy to examine ... southern regionalism combines with cosmopolitan sensitivity."-Harry de la Houssaye, Xavier Review "For Fontenot, the act of reading is one such expression of that desire: 'Readers, after all, view the world most passionately- / as if their own lives were at stake.' And this stellar collection of Fontenot's mature years fully persuades, by its metaphorical and imagistic thinking, that our own lives are truly at stake."-Kurt Heinzelman, Borderlands "Any reader's way of looking at and comprehending the world will be vastly expanded and improved by Fontenot's fresh and thought-provoking poems."-Dave Oliphant, Southwestern American Literature

About the Author Chef Suzie Snow Peas grew up in both Washington, D.C., and Beijing, but she credits her grandmother, her "Ah Paw," with being the biggest influence on both her ever-wondering outlook on life and her overwhelming interest in all things culinary. "My Ah Paw was raised in Guangzhou," Suzie says, "and she learned the old ways, the respectful ways, and she passed along her reverence to me. Come join us as Suzie leads us through some of her favorite traditional Chinese recipes. They won't be hard. You won't have to find some specialty oriental market. You won't even need more than one good-sized wok! All you'll need is her book, and a craving for great food!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very cute. I'm looking forward to trying the recipes. By Delta Stet This is a cute little cook book. It has less than ten recipes in it, but they are written in such an interesting way. The book is written as if a dog was cooking, measuring ingredients in paws and scoops, with a little story before each recipe. I thought the layout of the recipes was excellent; the ingredients are listed as they are needed in the process instead of all at the beginning. It might make it a bit more difficult to gather ingredients (although, not much), but you don't have to flip back and forth to see how much and which ingredients to add to your flaming hot wok.Very cute. I'm looking forward to trying the recipes.**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
