This is the story of my career of almost 20 years on patrol in the New York City Police Department. I battled the leaders of the department in an epic lawsuit for my equal rights while continuing to patrol the streets of northern Manhattan during the crack epidemic of the 1980's and 90's. I also wrote of my childhood, being raised by a drug addicted single mom in poverty and my struggles to make a normal life for myself in spite of my past.

By Momof5 I read this book with a heavy heart, I loved my career in the NYPD but this is a very true story of the inner walls. Thank you Marisa, you are a bold brave woman! I am the "Beth" in the book, and what she writes about... we lived. I wish you a happy life and am proud to say I was a small piece of your life. Everyone should read this book and buy it and pass it on to others. In my eyes, Marisa Perhaes Gorman.. you may have been a Sergeant..but SHOULD have been a CHIEF! Thank you for a great eye opening memory of horrible but true times. The blessing, we survived!

Gorman This book takes you behind the blue wall of silence that protects and covers-up the ugly sexism that permeates the NYPD. This author grew up on the streets of New York and took on the "establishment" of cowards and outright liars. Her story of grit and determination starts as a child where she developed the steel backbone to confront and actually defeat NYPD's brotherhood deceit, perjury and intimidation. Every women in law enforcement should read this as a primer on how to navigate, not only the streets of New York, but the hidden perils of becoming a female Police Officer. You may think you know the NYPD ---You don't.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. compelling personal story beautifully told By MikeShatzkin Marisa Perhaes Gorman is a great storyteller and her life gives her fabulous material. This narrative Aldo gives a clear picture of a changing New York and its Police Department. There are a few spots here that could have benefited from an editor, but those are details. There are no dull moments and you get a realistic picture throughout of what it was like to be a NYC cop in the 1980s and 90s and about the challenges of being a woman cop raising kids and coping with a totally sexist environment. And it is very entertaining.
