Tristan Fairholm is an ordinary teenager who would give his own heart to save his brother. Suddenly his life is turned upside down when an earthquake hits his sleepy town of Valley City, North Dakota. He panics, and makes a fatal decision that lands him in court. While stuck in limbo at Juvie, he is cut off from his family, tormented by bullies, and treated like a criminal. Worst of all, no one believes him. After all, no one else felt the earthquake. Is he lying? Or are darker forces at play? The Last Day of Freedom is the first book in the young adult fantasy series, The Natural Order.

Easy to read with great protagonist character development. I haven't read The Natural Order, but if the prequel's intriguing storyline is any indication of this author's style, it'll be on my list. Tristan is both stubborn and lovable and the loss he suffers is painfully portrayed in a way that makes me want to hug him. Simple yet articulate writing. I look forward to more from R.J. Vickers.

Vickers book, The Natural Order (half-way through), so when I discovered that she had written a prequel, I immediately purchased it. I'm so glad that I did! This short, quick-to-read, compelling back story of how Tristan ended up in juvie provides just the perfect complement to the full-version novel. In the prequel, we are finally granted the opportunity to really understand Tristan's internal story, his thoughts and his beliefs. We learn about the tragic incident that changed his life by living it with him, and with that, we feel with him- for me, exactly what a good book should do. This is what has been missing for me during my reading of The Natural Order. Every page I kept hoping to uncover the whys and hows of Tristan as the protagonist because I want to be sympathetic and like him, but I haven't been able to. Now I can, and I can't wait to go back and start the Natural Order over again with this brilliant bit of new information. The Last Day of Freedom is a must-read, and then should be immediately followed-up with The Natural Order for a total fantastical reading experience. Well-done R.J. Vickers!

Two boys, devoted to each other, are caught in an emergency situation (earthquake) with dire consequences. Bad things happen, and then get worse and worse. R. J. Vickers really knows how to build suspense -- every premonition of trouble is followed by glimmers of hope and then deepening disaster.I especially liked the subtlety of the title, "The Last Day of Freedom." Since the prequel starts with a disaster and the timeframe of the aftermath spans months in various stages of lockup, we are uncertain exactly which day is the last day of freedom. At first, we think the last day is the day of the earthquake, but by the end of the prequel, we are almost sure that the "Last Day of Freedom" is taking place in the final car ride. The Last Day of Freedom: A prequel to The Natural OrderFantastic set up for "The Natural Order," the first book in Vickers' new fantasy series. At the end of "The Last Day of Freedom," we are led to believe that all the disasters have been explained in natural terms. But put that thought aside. Vickers' writes so well, something tells me there's a lot more to this story, and "The Natural Order" will be a natural winner.
