In Taking our love offline, Chuck Wanager wields a scalpel to slice and dice and a sledgehammer to bludgeon a poem into shape with equal skill. His writing is sharp, incisive, thoughtful, twisting and twisted. Chuck pays attention to details to create poetry that provokes readers to deep thought and feeling. The poems surprise and challenge readers; they are absorbing, and, yes, sometimes skewed because Chuck often sees the world from the other side of the looking glass. --Dr. Eleanor Wolfe Hoomes, Author of DRIVING WITH MY BLINKER ON Chuck Wanager’s poetry collection Taking our love offline will make the reader see the world in a new way. His poetry is edgy and sometimes shocking in its approach to its subject matter. From poems about personal experiences to poems about world events, Chuck grabs the reader’s attention. His vivid images and use of the vernacular provide a vision and sometimes a re-vision of contemporary issues. Like the Beat Poets of the 50’s, Chuck Wanager relies on concrete language and images to make the reader take note of the world made fresh. --Dr. Robert C. The Storied Life Of A. J. Fikry (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition), by Gabrielle Zevin

From Booklist In this sweet, uplifting homage to bookstores, Zevin perfectly captures the joy of connecting people and books. A. J. Fikry, the cantankerous owner of Island Books, is despondent after losing his beloved wife and witnessing the ever-declining number of sales at his small, quirky bookstore. In short order, he loses all patience with the new Knightly Press sales rep, his prized rare edition of Tamerlane is stolen, and someone leaves a baby at his store. That baby immediately steals A. J.’s heart and unleashes a dramatic transformation. Suddenly, the picture-book section is overflowing with new titles, and the bookstore becomes home to a burgeoning number of book clubs. With business on the uptick and love in his heart, A. J. finds himself becoming an essential new part of his longtime community, going so far as to woo the aforementioned sales rep (who loves drinking Queequeg cocktails at the Pequod Restaurant). Filled with interesting characters, a deep knowledge of bookselling, wonderful critiques of classic titles, and very funny depictions of book clubs and author events, this will prove irresistible to book lovers everywhere. --Joanne Wilkinson

From the Inside Flap

We are not quite novels. We are not quite short stories. In the end, we are collected works.A. J. Fikry's life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died; his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history; and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. Slowly but surely, he is isolating himself from all the people of Alice Island--from Chief Lambiase, the well-intentioned police officer who s always felt kindly toward him; from Ismay, his sister-in-law, who is hell-bent on saving A.J. from his dreary self; from Amelia, the lovely and idealistic (if eccentric) Knightley Press sales rep who persists in taking the ferry to Alice Island, refusing to be deterred by A.J. s bad attitude. Even the books in his store have stopped holding pleasure for him. These days, he can only see them as a sign of a world that is changing too rapidly. And then a mysterious package appears at the bookstore. It s a small package, though large in weight--an unexpected arrival that gives A.J. the opportunity to make his life over, the ability to see everything anew. It doesn t take long for the locals to notice the change overcoming A.J., for the determined sales rep Amelia to see her curmudgeonly client in a new light, for the wisdom of all those books to become again the lifeblood of A.J. s world. Or for everything to twist again into a version of his life that he didn t see coming. As surprising as it is moving, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is an unforgettable tale of transformation and second chances, an irresistible affirmation of why we read, and why we love."

Fikry is the owner of a small, independent bookstore on the small Alice Island in the Northeast. He is cynical, cranky, and depressed...and not without reason. The recent death of his beloved wife has left him a widower at the age of thirty-nine. Their shared love of books seems to have died with his wife and A.J. is left behind with only bitterness.Enter an absolutely delightful cast of secondary characters who populate the island and A.J.'s life. You're bound to love at least one - if not all - of them.Next we have the unexpected hope and redemption of A.J. I'm not giving any spoilers here. Yes, it's a feel-good book. But it's more than that: it's a love letter to the power books have in our lives. If you have ever felt changed by a book, this novel will speak to you....you'll "get" it. And if you loved "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" or "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" you'll find lots to love here, as well - not because the plots are similar, but because of the similar feel to the novels that comes from a good cast of eccentric townsfolk, a small community, and a sense of closeness among the characters. So I'll leave you with this: if you love reading books, do not miss this one. (I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it made into a movie!)

Some make good use of both; I'm thinking here of works like "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore". Most, though, use a book as a sort of MacGuffin and it could just as easily be a butter dish. Or, the action takes place in a nice atmospheric bookstore that could just as easily be an auto repair shop. "Fikry", though, is different and belongs to that small category of works that really have something to say about books and bookstores and, in this case, booksellers. And that's great.Fikry is not just a bookseller. He filters his experiences, his thoughts, even pretty much how he lives his life by reference to his favorite books. Everything he perceives has some analogue in a book he once read, and when he isn't living his life he is thinking about or talking about books. It is no accident that the first major character we meet here is a publisher's rep who begins to play a larger and larger role in Fikry's life. And, because Fikry's opinions are strong and well-informed, the book is interesting enough even if you don't care for the plot at all. This book has been heavily promoted as "in the spirit" of "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society". That's probably good marketing - "Guernsey..." is a well-loved book, although I thought it was a little bland and flabby. But, this book is a lot better, or at least more appealing to me, in one particular regard. A.J. Fikry is a prickly character with a lot of strong opinions and a not entirely likeable or appealing world view. This is not some grand multi-generational saga; it is more of a character sketch, focused on an unusual character. More important - on a thought provoking and sometimes difficult character. So, no spoilers here. The blurbs give you a good idea of how this story develops. What is important is simply to note that Fikry is interesting and what he says and thinks about books is interesting. Bottom line - if you like amiable shaggy dog life stories, or if you don't usually but you do like reading about interesting people thinking about interesting books, then you might very much enjoy this. I did. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

It moves along at a fair pace. The characters are somewhat interesting for the most part. I have nothing particularly negative to say about the story.I didn't, however, especially like the book. I didn't dislike it either. It was a nice story. It was a safe story. It was gentle and sweet and cozy and predictable. For many readers, those are all excellent qualities. But if you, like myself, prefer books with at least a few edges, a few uncertainties, a little darkness, a little messiness, and some deeper character development, then this isn't the book for you. It's simply a matter of preference.

A frank and hilarious guide to every man’s mind-numbing nemesis: Shopping. Guys: spent one too many Saturdays marooned at The Mall? Rejuvenate your manhood with the Shopping Survival Guide for Men. This indispensable sanity-saver exposes the hidden history and insidious psychology of shopping (Hint: it’s crazy), plus cool-headedly guides you through the treacherous, credit card-melting mazes of: * Shoes: “If you've ever been in the shoe section of any major department store, you now know what the gross national product of Belgium would look like if it consisted of footwear, which, for all I know about Belgium, it does.” * Makeup: “Egyptians used cochineal bugs to make red dye for their lips, and I don’t even care what ‘cochineal' means because the word ‘bugs' is after it.” * Prom Dress Shopping: “Like most men, all you know about prom dresses is that they are more expensive than a good set of tires.” * Fashion Terminology: “Puckered Bodice: A banned professional wrestling move involving a lemon, a folding chair, and a car battery.” * Shopping History: “1687: Isaac Newton develops the law of universal gravity after his wife’s shoe rack collapses on him.” Melding together the whimsical wit of Douglas Adams, the laugh-out-loud narratives of Dave Barry, and the pop-culture cleverness of James Lileks, Dan Van Oss crafts a fresh and funny guide for any man who’s ever been trapped in the Seventh Circle of Dillard’s. * Learn about the Five Stages of Shopping Grief: “(Stage Four - Depression. That's it. I'm going to die here, right here by this bored-looking, no-armed mannequin with a size zero waist wearing something that looks like it was sneezed out of Barbie's closet.”) * Get tips on how to avoid shopping on Black Friday (“Hit yourself on the head with the Shiatsu Neck Massager with the Kung Fu Grip your wife bought for 75% off at last year's Black Friday sale, and pretend you no longer speak your native language.”) * Identify the “Shopping Bends” (“...where the male body attempts to compensate for the relative drop in logic and bank account levels, and the corresponding increase in estrogen levels, by trying to die.”) Comical bonus quizzes (“Shoe Brand, Kentucky Derby Horse or Hipster Band Name?”) help you pass the time until you’re asked to haul the bags out to the minivan. Don’t get dragged to The Mall without it!

Dave Berry meet Ray Romano in this quick witted satire on shopping By Brian Shopping Survival Guide is a humor book written for men who are dating or married to the girl who loves to shop. Luckily I am not one of these guys, but I was at one point. It is full of funny tidbits on how to get through and the “history” of shopping. The narration was done very well by Johnny Heller. He uses his tone to conjure up the humor that is written, and allows the reader to feel like he is getting his money worth while listening to this. The book is short, but there were no issues in production quality at all. This is one of those books you could listen to while you and your shopaholic other half were out… shopping of course. It’s a quick 2.5-hour audiobook that doesn’t leave much to the imagination.Starting off the author explains his reasoning behind writing this book, and explains the way it’s going to go. It’s a pretty simple and easy to follow book. But, I’m glad that I got the audiobook, humor books always have a little more to them when they are read. Normally I’m listening to a memoir by a comedian read by the comedian, but this was similar enough that I enjoyed it.This book will not be for everyone, it’s funny, short and to the point. The stories and tales from within conjure up a good chuckle of days past when I was dating a girl who just loved to shop. She would spend a hobo’s money if she could (I don’t miss her at all, can you tell).Needless to say, Van Oss’s writing style reminds me of a Dave Berry and a little bit of Ray Romano. It was a quick painless read that helped me get through this week. Now... off to go shopping! Just kidding.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Review of Shopping Survival Guide for Men By Dayna Leigh Cheser In one word, hysterical.I chuckled and outright laughed my way through this book, and even read selected passages aloud to my husband – who, lucky for me, doesn’t mind shopping at all. While not a ‘survival’ guide (as you might get from Homeland Security or The Sierra Club), it does poke some serious fun at the ‘art’ of shopping, covering everything from getting roped into going shopping, to navigating the various sections of a department store including terms to remember, to the trip back home … plus returns and more shopping. The author offers specifics for each section (with special attention to the shoe department), and even provides quizzes to make sure you’re learning what you need to know (answers provided). It’s humorous - well, OK … it’s downright funny - with abundant use of double-meaning words, and even made-up words. It made me think of Norm Crosby (the ‘Master of Malaprop’), the stand-up comedian whose fractured English conversations who entertained us for many years. If you have friends or family where the husband would do almost anything to get out of going shopping, but gets dragged along anyway (to carry the bags and ‘watch the purse’, among other things), this would make an excellent fun gift – both the husband and wife will see shopping in a whole different light.I enjoyed this ‘change of pace’ book, but found that the very reason it’s so funny and entertaining is the reason why I’m only giving the book 4-stars – The misuse and fracturing of the English language makes it sometimes difficult to read.By Dayna Leigh Cheser, Author

Review Praise for My Shoes are Killing Me

“So assured and musical is the hand that shaped them that these poems tend to memorize themselves, as though they had always formed part of our experience.”—Eric Ormsby

“The cool delight of her poetry is to turn those subjects of routine forgetfulness into words that quiver in the heart … Sarah knows the language: its pressure points, its traditions, its crevices. Trained as a musician, she also understands flow and timing, when to sing and when to keep silent.”—Montreal Gazette

“The vigour gets into Sarah’s rhythms and rhymes, as always, but they play here against a melancholic sense, as in blues music.”—Canadian Literature

“Her precise descriptive siftings…promote a vision of abundance as composed of luminous bits and pieces that never take up more room than they need.”—Arc Poetry Magazine

“[Robyn Sarah’s] concerns haven’t changed. But her eye on “the beginning of dwindle”—an already oft-quoted mantra from her title poem—has her probing them here with a new urgency, even a kind of abandon. The ‘nine movements’ that make up “My Feet Are Killing Me” rally defiantly and almost joyfully against that dwindling”—Anita Lahey, The Fiddlehead

“[Sarah’s] biggest gift is her ability to weave a number of complex themes into a seemingly straightforward yarn … She can take a perfectly ordinary event and transform it into something magical. Again and again.”—New Canadian Magazine

“Natural, musical, meditative, warm, and unexpectedly funny, this is a restorative and moving collections from one of Canada’s most well-regarded poets.”—49th Shelf

“As [Wallace] Stevens writes in The Plain Sense of Things, ‘The absence of the imagination had itself to be imagined.’ Robyn Sarah is one of our poet’s in Canada who has attended most readily and vigorously to this hard work, and we are forever indebted to her for it.”—Jeweller’s Eye

I don't know how I hadn't heard of Robyn Sarah before, but she is one of the most engaging voices I have heard in a while. She reminds me of what I like about Susan MItchell, Tony Hoagland, Eavan Boland, and Kathleen Graber. If that list means anything to you, I recommend this book.

Postcards to and from the past By Bruce Henricksen In this collection, Robyn Sarah meditates on memory, on personal memories as well as those woven into the fabric of Jewish identity. She is lyrical while avoiding the sentimental mists that often surround poems that travel similar paths.

In the great tradition of Forrest Gump, Eddie Ocean is an ordinary young man whose extraordinary zest for life makes waves for everyone around him. Packed with action, laden with humor and double meaning, and bursting with one young man’s passion for adventure, Crocodile Island is a tale about growing up, following your dreams, and forging lifelong friendships.

It’s not surprising that a young man named Eddie Ocean would be born with a restless soul. After a childhood spent roaming the woods of Kentucky—and his lifelong dream of being a sea captain—Eddie just isn’t content living in a city and working a normal job. So he does what few people have the courage to do: he sells all his possessions, moves to Miami, and buys a boat painted like a watermelon from an old Cuban sea captain.

Set in south Florida in the 1970s, Crocodile Island blends the magic of being young and invincible with the reality of life’s hard knocks. Join Eddie and his friends as they inspire cultural trends, hobnob with stars, fall in love, fight crocodiles, evade pirates, and weather all manner of life’s literal and figurative storms.

Review "Editing this book was one of the most fun assignments I have ever taken on. The book is a total hoot and working on it was purely a romp. If you like to read with a smile on your face, I recommend Eddie Ocean's Secret Diary to you unreservedly. The author has promised me there will be a sequel. I can hardly wait!"                                Cynthia MacGregor                                Freelance writer/ Editor

About the Author    E.O. Test worked in South Florida in the medical imaging field for twenty-two years. In 1983 Test helped to develop early N.M.R. pulse sequences (now called M.R.I.) with a .5 Tesla magnet, one of the first super conductive magnets to be installed in Florida. This early work helped magnetic resonance imaging gain FDA approval.    Upon leaving the medical field in 1993, Test bought land in Florida and constructed an equestrian facility. The small, family owned stable offered boarding and training for horses. Riding lessons for all ages were available year round. Winter "show riding" and summer "horse camp" was provided for the children. Test became a certified farrier before selling the business and then retiring in 2014.    He and his wife live in North Palm Beach, Florida. They have a son and a daughter. In his spare time, Test enjoys boating, fishing, sailing, and writing.

The author quoted some well known saying (sometimes tweaked just a little) at the end of each chapter and I found myself mentally trying to guess what each one would be. I recommend this to anyone who just enjoys reading a good story.Because of some mild adult humor I wouldn't recommend for "tweens' but it could be read aloud to very young children who wouldn't get the few double entendres anyway.Anyone growing up in the 1960's and 1970's will enjoy the inside jokes for that era.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A laugh out loud MUST read! By Douglas L Kisling I would LOVE to spend an afternoon with Mr. E. Test, sitting under a palm tree, drink in hand!!! What a mind!! I would just love to give him ANY topic and let him go!! He is one of the wittiest, clever writers I have read in many years. I seldom laugh aloud, but it happened so many times while reading Sun Chaser's adventures. I also read passages out loud to my husband who now wants to read the book!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!Karrie Kisling

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read! Very fun and whimsical By Mary Davis Great read! Very fun and whimsical, Crocodile Island had me laughing out loud more than a few times. The cleverly disguised adult humor is especially refreshing. The captivating storytelling is aided by the authors own childish, if somewhat bizarre illustrations. A great read and thoroughly enjoyable, I highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys an imaginative and humorous read. I can't wait for volume 2!

The Sanren-Sei, which consists of three stones played in a row on the star-points on one side, is the most powerful and dramatic of modern fuseki patterns, yet it is the easiest to master. He has enjoyed consistent popularity ever since it was invented because of its emphasis on developing a bold, attacking style. In this lucid explanation, Takagawa Shukaku helps you grasp its key concepts and shows you how to use it to secure center influence and build large moyos. He gives a comprehensive coverage of Sanren-Sei basics, then shows it in action in top-level professional play. Sanren-sai strategy is easy both to understand and to apply. The main themes of this opening are clear and compelling, and there are relatively few josekis to memorize, yet by the time you finish this book you will understand why it has been the favorite fuseki of so many great players.

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: Japanese

About the Author Kaku Takagawa also known as Shukaku Takagawa was one of the most successful professional Go players of the twentieth century. He was born on September 21, 1915. Kaku Takagawa won the Honinbo title nine times in a row, from 1952 to 1960, and was subsequently awarded the permanent title of Honorary Honinbo. He then chose Shukaku as his Honinbo name. He is one of the few Honorary Honinbos. He was known for having a healthy rivalry with Sakata Eio. This could be seen as Sakata would constantly beat Takagawa from 1959 to 1966 in the finals of major tournaments. Takagawa's books, translated from their original Japanese, were instrumental in educating Westerners in the ways of Go. He also wrote a series of articles from 1961 through 1977 for the Nihon Ki-in which was the primary English source of information about Go during that period. These articles were later compiled into Improve Your Intuition, still considered a valuable guide for Go players. He died on November 26, 1986.

Poetry. Doren Robins calls Devreaux Baker's new book, "lyrical-emotional meditations on the meaning of existence, family, self-reflection and marriage in time of war and environmental destruction." OUT OF THE BONES OF EARTH is a tapestry of interconnected voices that moves with ease from Barcelona to Basra and Tel Aviv to Afghanistan, from the domestic interiors of a daughter seeking reconciliation with lost ancestors to migrants seeking solace in a new land, to reveal the deep and profound truths of our interconnectedness and common humanity. This inspired collection of poems reflects pathos and love, compassion and wry humor, and reminds us how to transform fear into solace and hatred into love in the 'year of the drone.' "Baker's is a powerful voice, a wise voice. Listen closely." —Pamela Uschuk

They are well-crafted, smart, full of surprise, gut-wrenching and relevant to the modern social and political world. If you are a fan of Joy Harjo, Lucille Clifton, Connie Fife, Andrea Gibson or Derrick Brown, then do not hesitate but hurry to get this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great poet. By Thomas Roberdeau Devreaux Baker's new book is profound in its emotional arc, addressing war, famine, rape, love, birth, passion, unity, community and the idea of a universal consciousness that permeates all without being named. Her lyrical poems link to a mythical past as they emerge from the colorful dreamscape of our present, linking time together, merging the centuries... stopping time - no easy feat for any writer. In an era of self-centered writing, Baker looms larger than this, seeking a universal truth that places the individual on the borderline of legend, not in the center of vanity. These are attempts in writing to understand all that is expressible, to reflect upon the greatest depths of life... always emerging from the darkness with open eyes and an open heart. To read this book is to have a rich, completely fullfilling experience. Baker should be widely, nationally known. Perhaps this book will propel her into the brighter spotlight she deserves.
