Poetry. Doren Robins calls Devreaux Baker's new book, "lyrical-emotional meditations on the meaning of existence, family, self-reflection and marriage in time of war and environmental destruction." OUT OF THE BONES OF EARTH is a tapestry of interconnected voices that moves with ease from Barcelona to Basra and Tel Aviv to Afghanistan, from the domestic interiors of a daughter seeking reconciliation with lost ancestors to migrants seeking solace in a new land, to reveal the deep and profound truths of our interconnectedness and common humanity. This inspired collection of poems reflects pathos and love, compassion and wry humor, and reminds us how to transform fear into solace and hatred into love in the 'year of the drone.' "Baker's is a powerful voice, a wise voice. Listen closely." —Pamela Uschuk

They are well-crafted, smart, full of surprise, gut-wrenching and relevant to the modern social and political world. If you are a fan of Joy Harjo, Lucille Clifton, Connie Fife, Andrea Gibson or Derrick Brown, then do not hesitate but hurry to get this book.

By Thomas Roberdeau Devreaux Baker's new book is profound in its emotional arc, addressing war, famine, rape, love, birth, passion, unity, community and the idea of a universal consciousness that permeates all without being named. Her lyrical poems link to a mythical past as they emerge from the colorful dreamscape of our present, linking time together, merging the centuries... stopping time - no easy feat for any writer. In an era of self-centered writing, Baker looms larger than this, seeking a universal truth that places the individual on the borderline of legend, not in the center of vanity. These are attempts in writing to understand all that is expressible, to reflect upon the greatest depths of life... always emerging from the darkness with open eyes and an open heart. To read this book is to have a rich, completely fullfilling experience. Baker should be widely, nationally known. Perhaps this book will propel her into the brighter spotlight she deserves.
