Experts agree that regularly solving tactics is a vital component of chess training. However, it's also widely acknowledged that there is one drawback of traditional chess puzzles―when solving them students know for sure that there is a genuine tactic in the position, whereas during a real game there is no such guarantee. In this workbook, Volker Schlepütz and Grandmaster John Emms offer a unique framework to study chess tactics independent of themes, difficulty and―most importantly―even the existence of an actual tactic in a given position. Analyzing carefully selected games, from beginner level through to club and tournament level, the reader assumes the role of a tactics detective, checking for mistakes and missed opportunities by both sides without the help of a chess engine. This training method resembles live play far more realistically than solving puzzles, because each move has to be analyzed with respect to tactical possibilities―whether they exist or not. The same thinking processes used in the training can then be applied in real games.

  • A unique framework to practice chess tactics
  • Exercises resemble over-the-board situations
  • Ideal for beginners, intermediate and club players

Coleman Jr. It's true, as the negative review says, that this book doesn't teach you how to find tactics. But that's not the purpose of the book, and the book says so explicitly. The purpose of the book is to get improving players started on with a rudimentary process of how to analyze their games. A full analysis of a game would include positional play, but that's harder for beginners and intermediate players to grasp, so blunder checks are a good starting point. The book outlines a basic process for blunder checks, then provides plenty of example games to use for practice. Answers with explanations are at the end of each section and can be used to check your work and get explanations of tactics you missed. That last part is what you won't get just by analyzing a game you found somewhere and checking it with an engine. Once you have the process down, you can add positional considerations and even use the process during games.

When I first got this book, I expecting a technique on how to spot tactics. basically all this book does is tell you replay a game you have played and see if you missed something, then play your game again but from the opposite colors perspective and see of you missed something. Basically its telling you to do a post mortem of you own game. Post mortem are helpful, but what if you dont spot a better move. Also it really does not do much for overthe board play. Save your money, if you want to do a post mortem of your game its better to enter your game into a chess software and let the comouter determine if you missed a good move.
