They were in and out in less than two minutes—that’s how they got away with millions. And for the duration of their reign, no bank robbers were more feared (though they never fired their guns) nor more pursued or more mythologized than the Stopwatch Gang. The members themselves were straight out of central casting: Lionel Wright, a meticulous introvert who could disappear in a room full of people; Paddy Mitchell, a charming and well-connected crook who saw an angle in everything and would go to any lengths to avoid the hell of being locked away; and Stephen Reid, a fearless point man who could find the weakness in any system and whose story—of addiction and descent into crime, of redemption and literary fame—was all prelude to a tragic but life-saving fall from grace. In The Life and Times of the Stopwatch Gang, Josh Dean reconstructs the Gang’s glory days and reveals how the real story, pieced together through months of research and reporting most prominently with Reid himself, as he comes to the end, at age 64, of his final days in the custody of the state—is more remarkable than the myth that has long been told.

Real life crime well told By Robert C Ross Marvelous real crime story, meticulously researched and well written. The Stopwatch Gang was three naturalized Canadians who made a living robbing banks in the United States and Canada — an estimated 100 banks and $15 million CDN. Paddy Mitchell, Lionel Wright and Stephen Reid were named by the FBI because one of them was photographed wearing a stop watch. They used the watch to synchronize their robberies, usually under 90 seconds. They set a California record at a Bank of America robbery in San Diego -- US$283,000. Stephen Reid later became a noted Canadian author after writing Jackrabbit Parole and being paroled. That is a fast paced, well written crime novel. In 1999, Reid was again arrested, was convicted, and was sentenced to 18 years in prison and released on day parole on January 28, 2008.Wikipedia: "The gang was famous for brilliant planning of their jobs. They were known for robbing banks in 90 seconds or less and getting away with no trace. The group got nicknamed 'The Stopwatch Gang' by the FBI because the gang leader was seen wearing a stopwatch around his neck while on the job. They carried out a large number of bank robberies in the 1980s along the California coast with large sums of money stolen."Josh Dean has done a marvelous job of filling in the details.Robert C. I am not suggesting bank robbers should be celebrated. After all, they traumatize those directly effected and make off with money not theirs. However, there is a weird nobility in how the Stopwatch Gang did "business" given they never fired their weapons. They made their trade a profession.I read Greg Weston's book, The Stopwatch Gang, years ago and was enthralled. The three Canadians who comprised the gang were audacious to say the least. What struck me about Josh Dean's update is the gang's research. They certainly robbed banks but they also pulled off a gold heist worth $750,000 from the Ottawa airport. How did they know about it? Where did they unload it? Supposedly, there is a movie in development and it is one that I would watch.
