1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sometimes Amusing Collection of Movie Tidbits! By Mike O'Connor British film critic Quentin Falk offers up cinematic snapshots from some 300 films spanning the years from the 1890s to 2004 in this volume from Robson Books. Though rarely living up to the title, most of the tales told in Falk's book could be of interest to film fans on both sides of the Atlantic.Sub-titled EXTRAORDINARY BUT TRUE TALES FROM THE HISTORY OF FILM, Falk's book is chronologically arranged, beginning with the French silent flick "A Train Arriving at a Station" (1895) and ending with "The Passion," Mel Gibson's 2004 ode to sadism. Along the way Falk visits films both classic and clunker - "Casablanca" vs. "Plan 9 from Outer Space," for example - relating anecdotes of goofs and gaffes, fluffs and boners, overblown egos and mindnumbing corporate stupidity. To be honest, the title is hyperbole. I found almost none of the entries/incidents to be "strange" although the incident of the Russian Army refreezing a partially frozen lake for "The Barber of Siberia" flick - see p. 295 - certainly qualified. Likewise any hardcore film fan will probably be familiar with many of the stories. On balance, CINEMA'S STRANGEST MOMENTS is lightweight fare - interesting, informative, occasionally funny but NOT strange. Film fans might want to pick up a copy; price-tag: $14.00. Methinks an optional purchase.
