It’s the perfect gift for the prepper, zombie fan, and techie on your list this holiday season.Even if you’re the type to be a little skeptical of the idea that your friends and neighbors will ever turn into flesh-eating monsters, you might find a lot to like in The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Designed with the average Joe in mind, so the projects in it are accessible for just about anyone to attempt. There are clear step-by-step instructions, supply lists that include where to find parts both pre and post apocalypse, and even some extra “basics” instructions in the back of the book for the true beginners.The book is set up in various sections, beginning with simple projects that build on each other to create the more sophisticated projects at the end of the book. After all, before you can set up a wireless communication system, you’ll need to figure out to get power. Because this a zombie type book, most of the projects fall under the apocalypse heading (and the book stays well in that theme, with amusing commentary accompanying each one. That being said, anyone who likes to tinker will enjoy these projects, even if they don’t believe a zombie threat is imminent.The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse takes an entertaining view of the apocalypse, giving readers a chance to try out tons of helpful projects well before doom is nigh. I've read other books that try to ride the Zombie meme, but most of them either try too hard or lose track of the plot. By comparison, The Makers Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (TMGTTZA) rides this theme in a fun, lighthearted, and interesting way throughout.This is the sort of book I would have loved when I was a lad (assuming we had today's technology around back then). It starts of by telling you how to generate electricity using a solar panel or a car alternator and how to store it in a car battery. It provides suggested sources for everything you need pre-apocalypse (eBay, Sparkfun, auto-part stores) and post-apocalypse (scavenge etc.).Once you have your power source, the book guides you in protecting your base, starting by making zombie detectors (from simple trip-wires triggering alarms to more sophisticated solutions), then electro-mechanical door locks, then zombie detractors. It builds up from simple sketches running on Arduinos to more sophisticated systems like motion-detecting cameras triggering intrusion alarms.I can see this being a great parent-kid joint activity -- something everyone can get involved in and a really good way to bond and to share ones experience with ones offspring.The only problem with this book is that I didn't write it myself!

Not just for "Zombie" home protection and security By Guitar Man It deals with setting up home security (surveillance cameras, alarm systems, etc.) for a "zombie apocalypse" but it's really just some good technical advice and plans for home security for any number of reasons. This gets very technical into wiring circuit boards and programming using Raspberry Pi devices (or any Linux based device, really)...so this isn't really for non-technical people. As a programmer by trade, I found this book handy and very interesting, and I plan to try setting up a couple of the ideas using Raspberry Pi devices. The "zombie" aspect of this book just made the material a little less dry and a bit amusing at times. Thumbs up!
