By the author of Edgar Kennedy-Master of the Slow Burn and Vernon Dent-Stooge Heavy. Discover the missing back-story of the dawn of The Three Stooges in this groundbreaking full-length biography of Ted Healy.

Millions of comedy movie fans still enjoy watching The Three Stooges, but few know the Ted Healy story or the mysterious circumstances that surrounded his untimely death. He began his show business career in Vaudeville and climbed to the pinnacle of fame as a movie star, appearing in dozens of films, such as Dancing Lady (1933) with Joan Crawford and Clark Gable, Fugitive Lovers (1934) with Robert Montgomery, Operator 13 (1934) with Gary Cooper and Marion Davies, Reckless (1935) with Jean Harlow, and the Academy Award-winning San Francisco (1936) with Jeanette MacDonald, Spencer Tracy, and Gable.

Healy's sudden death at age forty-one just days after the birth of his son has long been surrounded in mystery and scandal. Was his death by natural causes or did foul play involving an alleged MGM/Wallace Beery murder cover up the truth? Author Bill Cassara, a retired law enforcement professional, digs deep into the annals of film history to uncover the riveting, tragic, and at times hilarious truth about Ted Healy, the unjustly forgotten, innovative funnyman. Includes a richly detailed biography that draws from many never before seen sources, a Filmography, photos and illustrations, an Index, and a Bibliography

Enjoyable and True Story of the Man Who "Created" The Three Stooges By Brent Seguine Ted Healy was much more than a piece of The Three Stooges' early history, and Bill Cassara details the man's fascinating life and career in complete perspective. Readers will learn of Ted's early life in Texas and NY (and introduction to Moe and Shemp Howard), his west coast introduction to showbiz, to his (and first wife Betty Braun) success as one of the most popular vaudeville and big stage revue performers in the country. Ted not only hired the Howard brothers, and later Larry Fine, he mentored his "stooges" and provided the circumstances that led them to their own success in the 1930s. In the final years of his life, Ted Healy was one of the busiest, in-demand featured supports at the MGM and Warner Bros. studios, a film career cut short by his tragic death in 1937.There are many myths and generalizations about Ted Healy, most of which are unfair and inaccurate. In truth he was a complicated man who fought alcoholism, but also a generous man with his talent and money, who forged relationships and respect from some of the greatest names on stage, film and radio. Bill Cassara's research debunks many stories that cloud Healy's actual legacy, most notably the conspiracy tales behind his death, e.g., the untrue Wallace Beery legend."Nobody's Stooge: Ted Healy" is a valuable, welcome and highly recommended addition to everyone's entertainment library.

Greene After tackling Edgar Kennedy and Vernon Dent, Bill Cassara's third book really puts his detective skills to work in telling the story of the short but vibrant life of Ted Healy. It covers far more than the birth of The Three Stooges, it brings to life the complex and brash personality of Healy, seemingly impossible to do with no first-person interviews available. Cassara must have spent countless hours scouring the newspaper archives of the world to piece together a compelling, interesting, funny theatrical life of someone who deserves the effort. Healy is so much more than a footnote in the careers of Moe, Larry and Curly, although that professional and personal relationship (which includes Shemp, to be sure) is at the heart of this tome. Mid-way through, Healy dies mysteriously and the back half of the book has Detective Cassara meticulously examining the wild murder theories and debunking most of them. I learned so much I didn't know... Ted Healy starred in a silent comedy at Hal Roach Studios directed by Stan Laurel, there is a Healy connection to the L&H feature 'Our Relations', one of the murder theories includes future James Bond film producer Albert R. Broccoli, and other jaw dropping revelations. Did MGM star Wallace Beery murder Ted Healy?? There are twists and turns aplenty and Bill Cassara keeps it all perking along in a readable, factual style that incorporates hundreds of newspaper article references and the most complete Ted Healy filmography ever compiled. An amazing, compelling work and I can't wait, once again, to see which film icon Cassara tackles next...

By Steve Cox Finally, maybe this book will put to rest the ridiculous conspiracy theories regarding the mysterious death of Ted Healy. This book completes the task of a thorough and factual investigation into the death of Healy as well as a thoughtful look into the comedian's brief life. There are some interesting facts about the Stooges which had not been published---until now. It's a must for any hardcore Stooges fan.
