About the Author Raised on a farm outside of Prosser, WA, Mr Dow graduated with a degree in Education from Washington State University. He began smokejumping in McCall, ID in 1968 and transferred to the Alaska base in 1975. Over 32 years he jumped 286 fires in nine Western states. He remained at the bottom level of the jumper base his entire career in order to jump more fires. He has hitchhiked over 50,000 miles in the US and Mexico and enjoys foreign travel, reading, hiking, camping, woodworking, and fly fishing. He currently lives with his wife and teenage boy in a log house he built several miles off the grid in central Washington.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Human Spirit and Close Friendships By Andy In full disclosure, I know at least 80% of the individuals named and participated on/with them in AK. I truly enjoyed the quick short recollection of the time and happenings of many of these events. It is well worth reading and I smiled as I remembered a number of the stories. If you are interested in the human spirit and craziness that happens, fire fighting, outdoors camping in the wilderness, etc., this book is for you.I must thank Rod for his efforts! I would hate to forget some of these fun stories in my old age and this book is just the ticket to remind me.

But for years I have been listening to my husband's stories about his smokejumping experiences. He is a wonderful storyteller. His stories are very entertaining - and make me wish that I had considered a career in fire. His story collection reveals his sense of humor and his love of jumping. Makes a wife proud.

Great Read By Nichole Having worked up in Alaska with Rod Dow and many of the other smokejumpers mentioned in the book, I found it highly entertaining. Rod Dow has a riveting sense for story-telling and after just one story I was completely absorbed. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing so many stories; a few of which I remembered while many of them were new to me (especially ones of which contained memories of people I held such high respect for). Whether you are familiar with the life of a smokejumper or not from front cover to back this collection of memories will leave you entranced so you cannot put it down until you are finished.
