“In Flanders Fields,” the iconic poem which gives its title to this collection of poems and selected prose, is one of Canada’s — and the world’s — best known poems of the Great War. It was written in 1915 by Canadian John McCrae, an artillery man, poet, and medical doctor, upon the death of a friend and fellow soldier during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915.This is a faithful reissue of the Canadian first edition of McCrae’s writings, originally issued by his friends in 1919 in his honour and memory. It includes the best of his poetry and selections of his letters from the front lines together with a thoughtful essay of appreciation by his friend and fellow medical officer, Sir Andrew Macphail.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved and now we lie

          In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch:  be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die.

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

          In Flanders fields.

At least three people stopped to ask me about it because they were so taken by the illustrations. This picture book for young people intersperses breathtaking illustrations for the poem "In Flanders Field" with background on World War I and the story of the writing of this poem. A deeply affecting and touching book, it will give young people a personal view of war, particularly this war. Unfortunately, many children as well as adults know nothing about World War I. This book is a fine introduction and a good war to broach a painful topic. By any standard, it is well-well written and thoughtful.

Beautiful Yet Haunting Illustration of the Poem By Nicola Mansfield Reason for Reading: Read aloud to the 10yo as part of our history curriculum. This is a book I've read several times. I've read the entire book to myself and aloud to each of my children plus I've read the poem from the book numerous times. This is not really a book about World War 1, or the Great War as it lets children know it was once called. Plenty of information about the war is imparted but that is through the telling of the story of Lt. Col. John McCrae, Canadian soldier and poet, how he came to write the poem "In Flanders Fields" and the impact that poem had on the people at the time as well as its lasting effect.Textually, the book starts with a copy of the poem written in McCrae's own hand. Then there is a very brief set up for WWI, and a brief background on John McCrae before he was in Flanders. It then goes on to describe in detail the conditions of war at Flanders and McCrae is quoted from his own letters. We are given the story, well the two variations, of how and why John wrote the poem and the public's immediate overwhelming response to its heartfelt message. Then how the imagery of poppies became incorporated into war posters, advertisements for Victory Bonds and quotes from "In Flanders Fields" were used as taglines to inspire people. We get a good look at McCrae's war life as a surgeon and how he lived out his life, eventually dying on the front lines of pneumonia. But the message of the poppy didn't end with Lt. Col. John McCrae's death nor the end of WWI, it became a symbol of remembrance of those who have fallen in wars to fight for our freedom and the custom of wearing a poppy, which started during McCrae's life, is still followed today in many countries throughout the world as they honour a national day of Remembrance on November 11th.Visually, the text pages are illustrated with a few drawings, photographs, postcards, and artifacts such as medals. But the true impact of this book comes from the beautiful yet haunting paintings of Janet Wilson which illustrate the poem a few lines at a time. In between the text pages every so often the poem is slowly told a few lines at a time using a two page spread entirely filled with the painting while the words are written along the bottom of the page. These paintings truly bring the poem's meaning forward to anyone who looks at them. Words and picture combine to tell the haunting, powerful cry of the poem. One cannot read the poem along with these paintings and not feel this poem in their gut, perhaps have their voice crack; it gets to me every time. While I certainly love this book as a whole I would recommend it solely for the illustrated version of the poem alone.

Every Rememberence Day[Nov.11th], we recited it, wore our poppies and then walked down to the cemetery to commemorate all the soldiers who died during the different wars. We talked about it in class for a few weeks.I gave it to my children after I found the book at a Canadian bookstore the week of it's release. They in turn took it school and their teachers read it to their classes. As a education major, I will use it in my studies and then as a teacher for my class to learn about the World Wars. The art work is beautiful and the story enclosed is lovely too, if ever can be of a book about war. It's too bad this isn't used over here in the States.

Every year or so you hear the big pitch: Windows is finally going to be awesome again. The new update is big, grander and a huge overhaul. And then it comes and it’s more buggy, weirder, and less functional than the version that came before! That’s probably what made you consider making the switch—you’re tired of the excuses and you want a computer that just works! Whether you are a new convert to Mac, still thinking about making the switch, or just want to learn more about Macs, this book will guide you through the Mac OS and help you see how making the switch really isn’t the great leap that you once thought it was. This is a condensed version of my other book "The Complete Beginners Guide to Mac OS X El Capitan." It is meant to go over the basics much more quickly, and is ideal for people wanting to dive into learning how to use Mac more quickly. Please note, while every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, this book is not endorsed by Apple and should be consider unofficial.

“In 1982 I was travelling in a suburban train between Boston and New York. I suddenly felt a stirring at the base of my spine and a trickle quickly turned into a rush of energy moving upward. Another will seemed to be working within me and I felt a mandate to shift my posture. Feeling awkward and embarrassed I assumed a lotus posture in the public carriage and waited for the next event. A flood of blissful fluid rushed up my spine emerging out of my heart. My journey with Kundalini had begun which would dominate and shape my life for the next twenty years.” Making of a Man is a personal disclosure. Dr. Woodcock tells for the first time those intensely intimate experiences with Kundalini (the divine mother) that both deconstructed his personality and transformed it. The content of the book may look like poetry but in fact is the residue of a poesis, a making. These word forms are virtually unedited since the time he wrote them down during a long period of ecstatic vision. This book is thus the record of an intense sustained spiritual process during which Dr. Woodcock reached a region of reality where he experienced the love, power and wisdom of the creative word. What was spoken thus became so! A man was transformed and an aspect of spirit incarnated.

Review on Making of a man: Initiation through the Divine Mother By Kindle Customer Is it possible that the future of man will be defined by an internal-chip set to one global ritualistic belief, one way to be, one perspective to follow? Freedom to think individually permitted only for selected leaders in a community chosen by a Global order?Or could it be that, as consciousness research is beginning to show, the definition of consciousness itself is love for being unique and the freedom for individualistic ritual decision of thought. Possibly even the need to return religious practices each back to their very early and unique characteristic rituals, individually differentiated but empowered by a global mystic thought belonging to all.Is it an undifferentiated global mass following the though of a differentiated leadership or is it individual thoughts participating in the making together of an undifferentiated Global truth representing them all?The word that makes the difference is not ego, self or soul but "participation" and among the several recent Jungian theorists, the one that is incorporating the concept of "participation" within an "itself confronted perspective" and with attention to the making of future is John Woodcock. He does it by making the first extraordinary attempt to blend the thought of Carl Jung with Owen Barfield's idea of an evolutionary consciousness and its concept of "final participation".Every moment of Soul display is uniquely participatory and for a psychological theory that is alive, the concept of participation is a key factor in order to understand and capture the essence of an individuated global mankind.Ubaldo Morales-Ramos

Twenty-two years ago an eleven year old girl wrote a poem that would change her life (and career) forever. It also grew into many poems that, collectively, became Chemistry, Not Science-the words transcending time as they draw upon ageless subjects of love, loss, loneliness, persistence, change and renewal. Written with grace and wit, this contemporary work of poetry aims to pull at one's heartstrings while at the same time eliciting recognitions-Hey, I've felt this way, too!-attempting to both challenge and heal the modern human soul.

Not Science" gives the reader a preview of what's to come - smart, intelligent By JustinSacramento The title of Caroline Wright's poetry collection "Chemistry, Not Science" gives the reader a preview of what's to come - smart, intelligent, thought provoking creativity. I never was one much for poetry. Sure, I read poetry in school like everyone else, and lyrics of songs certainly qualify. But never did I sit down and read an entire book of it. I did with "Chemistry, Not Science". I found myself reading each poem two or three times, and each time it hit me in a different way. I would always try to figure out what Caroline is saying about herself after the first read, but soon found that with each reading, the poem became a reflection of me, spoke to my heart, my mind, my life. I really became hooked, and found myself even going back to poems I had already read to see if my initial impression would change after putting the book down. And it always did. Caroline's poetry is smart, and challenges the reader to not simply read, but understand and feel. Her use of phrasing and language is so creative. Caroline clearly possesses the "science" necessary for poetry, but it's that "chemistry" she references in her title that makes her and her talent special. Preach Caroline! I am a poetry convert!

By Jeff Gaydash I am by no means an expert on poetry, but after only a few lines of reading "Chemistry, Not Science" I knew I was experiencing something special. It takes great courage to expose ones deeply personal feelings and Caroline does it so well in this intensely personal collection of poems. Love, loss, hope, fear and anger are all fair game. Highly personal yet universal themes make for a very accessible read, many readers may find themselves relating to the words presented within more than they care to admit! The accompanying photographs by lidija Fremeau are a perfect compliment to Caroline’s carefully crafted words.

Todas me miraron extrañadas, no sabían a qué yo me estaba refiriendo. . Esa noche iba a llover . . .

Arraras begins with an intro that states "she knows Selena's secret" and ends by explaining that, since Yolanda Saldivar told her the "secret" off the record, Arraras cannot reveal it. She says the reader needs to read between the lines to discover aspects of the secret that have since become public knowledge and were therefore OK for her to include in her book.I'm not a big Selena fan and this account seemed balanced for the most part-- but I can see that serious fans would be upset because Arraras insists on treating Yolanda and the Saldivar family with "respect"-- she allows them their say. Although Arraras admits that Yolanda is manipulative, evasive and less than honest, Arraras seems to let this pass, avoiding confrontation in order to preserve her exclusive relationship with Yolanda and the Saldivars.SPOILER: For what it's worth, the secret apparently was that Selena may have been planning to leave her husband, may have been romantically involved with a plastic surgeon in Mexico, may have been planning to take up residence in Mexico and open a clothing factory there, pursuing a career in the fashion industry against her father's wishes.

Could Tam, a Rangers fan he meets in the local kebab shop, provide the key to Rab’s success? As well as being a riveting adventure, If you fly with the crows… explores the use of Scots in 21st century Scotland, laughs at religious bigotry and sexual prudence and demonstrates how internet is taking over our lives. ‘A comic tour de force, with more than a few laughs along the way” Hi-Arts, sponsored by Scottish Arts Council

About the Author

After a fateful journey to the West Coast, where his life began to crumble, Travis Barnes acquired substantial credentials and experience in personal fitness. With perseverance and conviction, he and his wife, Cyndy, started on their way to success by first opening one Journey Fitness center and then a second.

With a third center planned, Journey Fitness could soon branch into the world of franchising. The facilities are not just exercise gyms, but also nonjudgmental personal spaces that encourage healthy living through diet and exercise—as well as spiritual self-awareness.

Barnes is a member of several prestigious professional organizations. In addition, he is the coauthor of Results Fitness, which he created in collaboration with Rachel and Alwyn Cosgrove.

Today he is busy creating a brighter future for himself and his family in upstate New York.

By Lindsay I found this book to be a quick read, and it revealed a very inspirational story about overcoming adversity and rising to meet life's challenges. The author lays out numerous events, each of which would be an impressive accomplishment for any person: overcoming addiction, coming out of prison and immediately becoming a productive member in society, finding God, starting a small business and through it all helping countless people along the way. Whether your goals are to improve your fitness, find inspiration or you are looking for a role model of someone who has hit beyond rock bottom and come out on top, this book is for you. The author, Barnes, can serve in one way or another, as a role model for us all. There is some challenge, or "step" on his journey that nearly everyone will relate to.I would highly recommend this book for someone who may be stumbling on their own path, regardless of which demon of adversity you face.

The results since I joined last August are tremendous. Not only have I lost weight, I am strong both physically and mentally! When you read this book you will understand. Travis and Cyndy have created an amazing fitness family here in Upstate NY. They are both so genuine and truly care about every one of their members and this book tells the story of how they got to this point. This book at times was hard to read because it brought me to tears at times yet it also made me laugh. It is a story about love, heartbreak, determination, selflessness, faith, overcoming obstacles and pouring your heart into your business. Thank you for sharing your story Travis and Cyndy and for guiding me along my own Journey!

The relationship between him and his wife, Cyndy was a classic love story! I really think this book could be a movie! It was THAT good! I highly recommend!

Windows 10 Step by Step, by Joan Lambert, Steve Lambert

About the Author Joan Lambert has worked closely with Microsoft technologies since 1986, and in the training and certification industry since 1997. As President and CEO of Online Training Solutions, Inc. (OTSI), Joan guides the translation of technical information and requirements into useful, relevant, and measurable resources for people who are seeking certification of their computer skills or who simply want to get things done efficiently. Joan is the author or coauthor of more than three dozen books about Windows and Office (for Windows, Mac, and iPad), video-based training courses for SharePoint and OneNote, and three generations of Microsoft Office Specialist certification study guides. She provides certification development consulting services to software companies, universities, and certification vendors, and enjoys communicating about the benefits of technology at onsite training events. Joan is a Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Office Specialist Master (for all Office versions since Office 2007), Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (for Windows and Windows Server), Microsoft Certified Technology Associate (for Windows), Microsoft Dynamics Specialist, and Microsoft Certified Trainer. Joan currently lives in a small town in Texas with her simply divine daughter, Trinity; an ever-growing menagerie of dogs, cats, and fish (and the occasional frog, lizard, or vole); and the DeLonghi Gran Dama super-automatic espresso machine that runs the house. Joan’s first publishing collaboration with her father, Steve, was the inclusion of her depiction of Robots in Love in one of his earliest books, Presentation Graphics on the Apple Macintosh. Steve Lambert started playing with computers in the mid-1970s. As computers evolved from wire-wrap and solder to consumer products, he evolved from hardware geek to programmer and writer. Steve has written or co-written more than 20 books on developing technologies, including Presentation Graphics on the Apple Macintosh, Creative Programming in Microsoft Basic, the CD-ROM The New Papyrus, and Internet Basics: Your Online Access to the Global Electronic Superhighway. Steve is also the author of Built by Anhalt, a biographical exploration into the life and architecture of the famed Seattle architect Fred Anhalt. Steve has specialized for many years in the conversion of content from one format to another, including projects such as the Microsoft Programmer’s Library in 1988 and the conversion of the 25-volume Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia for the initial Microsoft Encarta CD-ROM. He has created several content authoring and delivery systems, including those used by the Microsoft Mastering Series, the Quick Course Series, and numerous pubStudio titles that are published by Microsoft and several US government agencies. He is a strong advocate of good template design and of using Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) automation to smooth out the conversion, assembly, formatting, and validation of content for delivery via print, ebook, or web.

By Mark H I have become so accustomed to books about Microsoft's Windows Operating Systems being bad, that I actually didn't know how to react to the descriptive and thorough information provided in this remarkably comprehensive reference. The title is simple and accurate but what I didn't expect was to be led into the depth - the reasoning - the logic behind the functions I've only known to click, but never understood why.Steve and Joan are a father and daughter team and they do a very impressive job at identifying how and why we do what we do in Windows 10. For example, one Windows book I had checked out from the library mentions "Fetch" as a program you pull other files from!? Ridiculous! The Lamberts explain the Fetch is a program tied to One Drive. It explains that we can store our files on One Drive and that Fetch's job is to go and get those files at our request from ANY computer. But it goes on to suggest tips for using it and how to set it up, almost as if each segues to another chapter. This is a classic example of the difference between this book and MOST other Windows books - explanation of the function. This book naturally teaches us. It organizes the information with an impeccable series of appendixes that covers every switch on the keyboard to every word you may ever want to know the definition of. Ever hear of an app? Well, it's in there.I will keep this book as a reference for a long time. It's one of the few reference books that I actually WANT to read from cover to cover. The Lamberts are true teachers and owning this book would make you one of their students and eventually one expert in Windows 10.

All of the others that I have seen are too superficial, boring, and incomplete. This book is much more complete than the others, but also also caters to beginners. There are 12 chapters split into 3 major parts. Part 1 (the first 5 chapters) covers the basic user interface for Windows 10. Many readers will be happy with just that material and never need to look at the second half of the book. Parts 2 and 3 cover more advanced material like managing user accounts, your Internet connections, and peripheral devices. If you need the more advanced material, it is good to have here. All of the chapters are written clearly and completely, unlike many of the other books that have huge gaps in detail and depth. This book is a heavy 600+ pages, but the chapters are laid out to make finding what you need pretty easy. There is a good table of contents as well as a good index and glossary. So many computer referebce books lack indexes these days, which I think is a really terrible idea.

WINDOWS 10 STEP BY STEP is the official Microsoft guide to learning the Windows 10 operating system. It is intended for "home and business users of desktop and portable computers and devices running Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro"--users who are Windows beginners and users who are already familiar with Windows. However, it is primarily a practical learning book (with practice files covering basic Windows operations, and configuration explanations accompanied by screen shots). It is not a complete Win10 OS reference book.Specifically, this guide covers the features of the Windows 10 operating system itself. It explains "how you can use the operating system and the included tools, such as File Explorer, to access and manage the apps and data files you use in your work and play". It sometimes mentions the apps that are included with the Win10 software (e.g., Maps, Photos, Mail, Calendar, Groove Music, Windows DVD Player), but it is NOT a guide to using these apps.WINDOWS STEP BY STEP is a very good practical guide to learning Win10, but it is probably NOT the best choice for experienced Windows users who are upgrading from earlier Windows versions and merely want to get going quickly with Win10. For those people, I would recommend My Windows 10, which is more of a quick reference book. The chapter titles give you a good idea of the scope of the WINDOWS 10 STEP BY STEP coverage:Chapter 1. Get started using Windows 10Chapter 2. Personalize your working environmentChapter 3. Manage folders and filesChapter 4. Work with apps and notificationsChapter 5. Safely and efficiently browse the InternetChapter 6. Manage peripheral devicesChapter 7. Manage network and storage resourcesChapter 8. Manage user accounts and settingsChapter 9. Manage computer settingsChapter 10. Manage power and access optionsChapter 11. Work more efficientlyChapter 12. Protect your computer and dataAppendix A. Install or upgrade to Windows 10Appendix B. Keyboard shortcuts and touchscreen tipsThis guide also has a glossary of computer terms (e.g., broadband connection, flick, IP address, parallel port), and a rather extensive index.
