About This Book

  • Design software that is maintainable outside the ecosystem of their creators
  • Ensure quality by following patterns that have been proved to work
  • Over two dozen practical Architectural and Design patterns

Who This Book Is For

Learning Dynamics NAV Patterns is intended for developers, architects, (technical) consultants, and application managers. You may have very little or no knowledge about NAV patterns, but you should be acquainted with programming.

What You Will Learn

  • Apply object-oriented practices to C/AL programming
  • Structure your application to avoid merge conflicts
  • Refactor legacy code and avoid anti-patterns
  • Design decision trees to decide when to use which patterns
  • Clone codes and their application in Dynamics NAV
  • Make your application extensible by creating predefined hooks and facades

In Detail

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is a complete ERP system, which also contains a robust set of development tools to support customization and enhancement. These include an object designer for each of the seven application object types, a business application oriented programming language with .NET interface capability, a compiler, a debugger, and programming testing language support.

Learning Dynamics NAV Patterns will guide you through the NAV way of solving problems. This book will first introduce you to patterns and the software architecture of the NAV and then help you to build an example application. Then, it walks you through the details of architectural patterns, design patterns, and implementation patterns. This book will also talk about anti-patterns and handling legacy code. Finally, it teaches you to build solutions using patterns.

Proven patterns and best practices will help you create better solutions that are easy to maintain in larger teams across several locations. It will guide you through combining abstract patterns using easy-to-understand examples and will help you decide which patterns to use in which scenarios.

Style and approach

This book explains the concepts of patterns, code structuring, and object-oriented concepts in a way that is easy to understand for Dynamics NAV specialists through practical examples.

About the Author

Mark Brummel

Mark Brummel is a freelance all-round Microsoft Dynamics NAV specialist, focused on helping end users of the product. With http://nav-skills.com/, he evangelizes and documents the 'NAV way'. This is a combination of architectural principles and design best practices, formalized in a workshop called Master Class for Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Architecture and Design Patterns. The methodology helps in creating solutions that are easy to upgrade, recognizable for users, and maintainable outside the ecosystem of their creators. All three elements apply to the original Navision product that was shipped in 1995, and was extracted, updated, and documented in this methodology. In September 2015, Packt Publishing published his new book, Learning Dynamics NAV Patterns, which is about this methodology. He also organizes hands-on workshops together with a group of MVPs and MCTs from across the globe. Mark started in 1997 as an end user, and worked for 8 years for the NAV partners after this. Designing and maintaining add-on systems was his specialization. Some of these add-on systems exceed the standard product, when it comes to size and complexity. Coaching colleagues and troubleshooting complex problems is his passion and part of his day-to-day work. His first book, Dynamics NAV 2009 Application Design, was published in 2010 by Packt Publishing, and updated to Dynamics NAV 2013 Application Design, published by Packt Publishing, when a new release became available. Many end users of Microsoft Dynamics NAV struggle with the question of how to upgrade their two-tier solution to a three-tier solution. Mark can help you answer these questions and plot a roadmap to the future, retaining the investment in the solution. When Microsoft introduced the three-tier architecture in 2009, it meant a major shift for experienced NAV developers and consultants. Mark has trained most of those that live in the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2010, he started a think tank called Partner Ready Software together with four other Dynamics NAV experts. Partner Ready Software brings fresh ideas about designing applications in NAV, and creates awareness of applying Design Patterns in creating repeatable solutions. Mark is an associate in the Liberty Grove Software network, a member of the NAVUG advisory board, the co-founder of the Dutch Dynamics Community, the vice-president of the Association of Dynamics Professionals, and an advisor to Dynamics HUB. Mark has undertaken a special project and performance tuning of the Dynamics NAV product on SQL Server. As a unique specialist, he has done breakthrough research into improving the performance of Dynamics NAV on the SQL Server. On http://nav-skills.com/, Mark maintains a blog. This blog contains a wide range of articles about both the Microsoft Dynamics NAV and the SQL Server product. He is also a frequent speaker at Microsoft events, and publishes articles on Pulse for LinkedIn. Since 2006, Mark has been rewarded by Microsoft with the Most Valuable Professional award for his contribution to the online and offline communities. He has received this award ten times. Mark is married and a father of four, and lives in a small town in The Netherlands.

By Alain Krikilion I have read a lot of NAV books of which I thought: this is a book every C/AL developer (and preferably everyone somehow involved in NAV development) should read.I've also had some NAV books on which I preferred I never had my hands (or eyes) laid on it.Is this a book in either of these categories? No, it isn't!It is a book that every C/AL developer (and preferably everyone somehow involved in NAV development) MUST read! …. Twice! … At least! This is really the holy bible of C/AL development! The book explains how you should develop to make it more readable, maintainable, upgradeable.I am not going into details, because you should not read ABOUT it, but read it!

Mark took the better part of the past 2-3 years to actually think about capturing the essence of the patterns that we find in NAV. By breaking down the building blocks of the application, you get a great sense of how it all works, and how to use that knowledge to extend the application. This book is on my short list of must reads for consultants, business analysts, designers, and developers; anyone who works in this field really. If you deal with NAV in any way, this book will help you understand.

This book is an excellent resource for all IT staff involved in a NAV project. Mark Brummel is an advocate for standards and convention, and he describes his ideas very effectively and simply. In addition, this book highlights changes from previous versions of NAV, so this book is an invaluable resource on a project moving from an older version of NAV to a newer version.

About the Author I has been involved with art, poetry, dance, art, drumming in some form since I was little and I was published for one of my poems. Although i think it was to get me to buy their poetry book with one of my poems in it since the contest was advertised in the Sunday comics. I have been continually writing especially in transition times in my life, college, near death experience, traveling in Europe etc. I wrote a lot when learning disabilities almost stopped me from graduation, my emotional madness when I was first diagnosed a type 1 diabetic, and dealing with this transition. I have used poetry as a form of expression to deal with emotional challenges with in my life time

Bless You Bollywood!: A tribute to Hindi Cinema on completing 100 years, by Tilak Rishi

About the Author I was born in Lahore as the youngest sibling in a large well-off family of Punjab, where father, the sole provider, worked as the chief representative of Oxford University Press, London. I had just finished high school, winning merit scholarship from Punjab University, scoring very high marks when the family was forced to leave Lahore, which became a part of Pakistan after India's partition in 1947. The family moved to New Delhi to start from scratch, where after graduating with very high grades in law and MBA from Delhi University, I started my career as a corporate executive with Godrej, one of the most reputed companies in India, then the biggest manufacturers of bank lockers, steel cupboards, and furniture. After working there for the first twenty years of my corporate career, I moved on to avail better opportunities in other big companies, taking retirement after a well-rewarded service of over forty years in the corporate sector of India. In the postretirement period, I worked for a while as deputy director (publications) with Institute of Marketing and Management, New Delhi. Side by side, I passionately pursued my hobby for writing and remained a regular contributor to newspapers in India and later in USA. My "Letters to the Editor" in the Hindustan Times, New Delhi, and San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco, received great respect, as these were invariably published under three to four column headlines or placed prominently in a box. I moved to the United States in the '90s along with my wife, Inderjeet, former principal of senior secondary government girls' school in Delhi, to be with our only son Alok, settled here as a prominent software engineer in Silicon Valley. In the United States, I took to what I wanted to do all my life, writing a book. Many true happenings and characters I came across in life, including interaction with former US president, Bill Clinton, inspired my first book, Paradise Lost a

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Stellar,Thought-Provoking, and Entertaining! By Diva Rishi has written a remarkable book, ambitious in aim, comprehensive in scope, with dazzling depth. This is no dry review of 100 years of Indian cinema, nor an academic treatment of artsy film. No. We're treated to juicy bits of behind-the-scenes glimpses into Bollywood movies and lore. It's chock-ful of fun factoids from the past 100 years and while I'm no Bollywood buff, I found myself fascinated by little known tidbits, e.g. my favorite singer playback Kishore Kumar married to Madhubhala? Hmm, who knew?Though Indian, I'm a product of the Western 'tell-all,' half-truth confessionals. I'm sheepish to admit I wished for salacious bits of dirt. I longed for him to air tawdry laundry of the industry . . . no such luck! You'll find no mud-slinging here. The author is not invested in muck-raking, nor interested in making a buck off our prurient curiosity. Instead, not only do a wealth of films benefit from his obvious respect for the medium, but each individual movie star becomes illuminated by his joy in watching the movies.I stumbled upon an unexpected treasure in reading the book. After finishing it, I felt curiously humbled. But bewildered about why I should feel such. Why and about what was I humbled? I noted the stark dissonance between my expectations for lascivious details about movie stars, for ugly fictions about movies--this is NOT what I had just read. Rishi leaves out gossipy, potentially damning bits. He theoretically could've included them. He chose not to. Unfairly, I leapt to judgement, e.g. "it's incomplete, not the whole truth, etc." I was unwittingly measuring one cultural relativity standard for another--an impossible task!Whereas my expectations reflect my prevailing culture, Rishi's writing reflects his culture: the South Asian commitment to graciousness. The Indian ethos is beautifully reflected in the genteel treatment of his subject, where Rishi preserves the dignity not only of the actors' requisite reputation, but also of their humanity. My projections reflect my seeking cheap thrills, in contrast to this book, which delivers an honest rendering of a true film lover. Though key as entertainment, the deliciousness of this work lies in is its value as anthropological artifact! Reading this book--and reflecting on my responses to it--helped me examine my biases, question my notion of "truth," and expand my definition of what ought to be revealed and what ought to be concealed.I especially love the authors' tracing of silent films to talkies, and its corresponding social significance . . . women's liberation and arranged marriages. The author does not write in a vacuum. Rather, he places Bollywood squarely in historical/social context. This is where the work shines and approaches academia--as much as entertainment. And stimulating it is! The writing is down-to-earth, conversational, accessible; the book does not feel as a reference tome. Instead, as reading experience, it's seamless, effortless and breezy. My favorite chapters near the end of the book: top 100 movies, classic comedies, and costliest box-office crashes. In these, the author's passionate and his fevered enthusiasm shines! His excitement for the medium of film and near encyclopedic knowledge, his vivid memories of watching the movies, and exhaustive research . . . all these come into play. These chapters are a marvel. Of the 100 movies reviewed, I watched four at most. Yet I found myself curiously bewitched by Rishi's descriptions and rendering of each film. Each felt like a mini soap-opera with separate plot and characters . . . I found myself wanting to watch several of the movies he writes about. As a reader, this is the greatest testimony to the greatness of the book: I was left wanting to dive further into the magic of Bollywood :-)!

She lived in Seville, Spain for 23 years teaching English as a foreign language but now has returned to Scotland with her young daughter and devotes her time to writing spiritual books - to date she has published eleven books, collectively titled EXPERIENCING GOD. This volume is Volume V and Clare comments on this collection of her poems in her Introduction: `These poems were written while at prayer and reading the Holy Bible. They are divine inspirations, some of them from verses in the Old Testament, some are inspired from the Gospel, and others simply while at prayer. In them, God talks of the great blessings that He has for those who follow His teachings and are faithful to Him, but He also warns of His great anger and punishment for those who break the covenant that He made with mankind, found in these great and holy words of the sacred Bible. May these poems be in honour and glory of the one and only true living God.'This Great FearLittle one, this great fear of meis within those who are very nearand dear to me,in those whom I steer, for it is very clear to youthat I am the great Sire, the only one who can cause great fireor make things very dire,or who can take you higherfar above this great quagmire,I shall never tire of telling you,for only I can dwell in youand ring my great and holy bell in you, making all so well for you.But I can also make life hell for youand surround you with a very great smellif ye do not do as I tell.So live with this great and holy fear of me,and nothing shall smear you,for I shall clear a great and holypath for you,far from the daft, those who sit and laugh, this very great trash that hath nofear of meand is neither near nor dear to me,and most certainly shall be smeared by mewith this very evil mark, 666,by which they are bewitched andtorn apartby this great sharkthat hath no fear of me,nor any respect, neither he--this great pest--nor his little insects.Amen.The words are those of a woman who has experienced much and who continues to carry her redemption to those in need. She is a serious thinker and a soulful poet. Grady Harp, August 15

None of them are particularly long so even if you only have a minute you can easily finish a poem By alinefromabook This is a book of inspirational poetry. The poems have been written by the author during times of prayer and studying the Bible. The author states that the poems have been inspired by both the Old and New testaments and speak of God’s desire to bless His people.I did not find the poems to be particularly inspiring, but that is probably because I’m not especially fond of poetry. I found that the poems definitely referenced many portions of the Bible and I did not find anything in them that was theologically incorrect (always something I look for in a book that claims to be inspired by God). I think that lovers of poetry and lovers of God could find a lot of hope and comfort in these poems. None of them are particularly long so even if you only have a minute you can easily finish a poem. I would recommend reading them one at a time and taking time to ponder and let them sink in.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poems Crafted With Heartfelt Devotion By Marta Cheng Experiencing God (Volume V) is a collection of poems by Clare McNeill. The author states that her poems are “divine inspirations, some of them from verses in the Old Testament, some are inspired from the Gospel, and others simply while at prayer.” Religious and spiritual poems provide words of comfort and wisdom and acknowledge the sacrifice Jesus Christ made to save the souls of men, women and children. While the poems in Experiencing God (Volume V) follow no particular style or rhyming verse, it’s obvious that Ms. McNeill’s poems have been crafted with heartfelt belief and devotion. Notwithstanding, it would have been much more personal and interesting had the author provided some insight as to what particular moment, episode or incident had inspired her to write each (or a particular group) of poems.

The poems that make up Lost in the Telling present a scene change from the southern gothic narratives of Williams’ previous collections. These surreal little poems, most of them looser in form, explore dreams (both the day and night variety) and those worlds in which they are set. The would-be rock and roller longing for his suburban home, for peace and quiet in the day-to-day. Or the middle-aged office worker reminiscing over his past life—its smoky, blurry late nights on the road, its backstages and broken-down vans, its overdriven guitars and hangover cures. But more than being just a journal of dreams (a well-mined theme for poets since time immemorial), Lost in the Telling strives to translate these hazy hallucinations, and then inform the reader/fellow traveler of what he or she has seen, and of just what might be waiting around the next highway bend.

See New York Through A Fresh Lens By Art Betty Farber is a gifted poet who captures the ordinary happenings of New York City and turns them into the most remarkable experiences to share with her readers. Buying bagels becomes psychoanalysis, and watching the skyline becomes a high art form. You'll never see New York the same way again after reading Betty's poetry collection.

From wonder at Betty Farber’s insightful observations, to suspense in her everyday bravery, to admiration at her resourcefulness and making the most of life's gifts. This book made me laugh at small barbarians and marvel at umbrella graveyards and kind strangers. And it brought me unexpected tears in the Starbucks and over Echoes and the most Foolish Things. It is a treasure.

After a storm she sees, “Carcasses of umbrellas with ribs like tusks, Useless, abandoned, their lives at an end.” At the Philharmonic she describes “a sad pas de deux,” taking place in the audience: “Her head on his shoulder, his body unresponding.” Her book of poems offers a surprisingly tender and gentle view of city life.

EXCERPT:“Norman’s Woe” is the picturesque name of a rocky headland, reef, and islet on the coast of Massachusetts, between Gloucester and Magnolia. The special disaster in which the name originated had long been lost from memory when the poet Longfellow chose the spot as a background for his description of the “Wreck of the Hesperus,” and gave it an association that it will scarcely lose while the English language endures. Nor does it matter to the legend lover that the ill-fated schooner was not “gored” by the “cruel rocks” just at this point, but nearer to the Gloucester coast.

The Wreck of the Hesperus, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

About the Author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.

Where the saying "wreck of the Hesperus" comes from By Sue Young Many people, young and old, have used the phrase "It(or you)look like the wreck of the Hesperus" and after hearing it from so many people(who would say that but not know what the Hesperus was), I spent time on the web trying to find out. Learning it was a poem by Longfellow, my library had a copy and I read it. It is a sad tale of a shipwreck, written with such vivid detail that leaves you in awe of the work. I would suggest to the reader, if you, too, always wondered about this old saying, you find the book which contains the poem, and see for yourself how gripping a tale it is.

I loved the story, ,y mother used to recite it to me when we camped. The only hitch, the illustrations statred, are NOT in the book, but, not a biggy, the poen was wondrous

Having your cake and eating it too is something everyone on the planet wants in life. For some, it is the happy family with two monsters for kids that no matter what happens, they can do no wrong, some it is fame on the big screen, being stalked by paparazzi and others, it is to travel the world seeing all that mother nature has to offer. Gag me with an overstuffed pillow. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted it all, but my vision of happiness is the dream job, the dream car, the awesome apartment and a plate of bacon all to myself. The only thing I didn’t want was a man. In my experience, men only cloud your judgment and replace your dreams with theirs. Things were going according to plan until fate, karma, destiny, fortune or whatever you want to call it stepped in and said “Oh wait, no, I don’t think so.” and took it all from me. For now I’m stuck mooching off my best friend and working desperately trying to figure out a way to get it all back. That is until fate slaps a Jesse in my face. But let me start from the beginning. So grab a plate of Bacon or your favorite snack and let me tell you all about it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another laugh out loud hit! By Ana's Attic Humorous Contemporary Romance, Can stand aloneI was so excited to get my hands on Kelly! Sasha, the first book in this series of standalones, was one of my surprise favorites of 2014. I loved Rae's sense of silly humor, combined with a group of good friends and romance. For me, one of the keys to loving a book is loving the heroine. Even better, is when there is a group of friends I'm dying to hang with, that's how these books are. I'm dying to meet all these girls and hang out for the weekend (with lots of booze).Kelly was a social worker; her dream job, and all she ever wanted to do since she was 11 and a social worker helped her best friend. Life was good. New car, great job and great friends. Kelly wasn't looking for love. Her life was perfect. Until she got laid off. They promised they'd work it out for her to come back in a couple of months, but a year later, Kelly is waiting tables at Dukes instead of her dream job, and her awesome car was repossessed. There was only one good thing about Duke's. BACON. They add it to everything."I cannot tell you how much I love bacon...and smelling it all day was like a little slice of heaven in the hell on earth I now call my life."While Kelly doesn't normally do blind dates, she accepted one through a friend at work. When she was working, she couldn't care less about dating. But now, someone paying for a meal is a very welcome treat. Unless he is a Star Wars freak named Benji."Oh my God, somebody please come kidnap me. I won't struggle, won't scream. I will come with you quietly."Kelly's prayers were answered in the form of a gorgeous guy who interrupts her date."I couldn't help but notice you look extremely bored."...I'm pretty sure you are bored off your a$$ and that if you never hear another word about Star Wars again in your life it will be too soon."As he proceeds to educate Benji in proper dating technique, Kelly loves the nerve he has to do that. Plus he's hot and smells good."Oh hell, this man is going to give me a lady boner without even trying. He has to be one of the sexiest men I have ever had the pleasure of laying my eyes on. His words are not poetry, but the way they flow out of his mouth makes me weak."Despite the connection with Jesse, Kelly never uses the number he gives her. Until she gets herself into a pretty dangerous predicament, and she runs into him again. But of course, she embarrasses herself again..."Um, Ashley, you may want to avoid the bathroom for a good twenty minutes because I just dropped a giant deuce that would make a grown man cry like a baby."But that's OK, he still wants her. And boy, does she want him.Likes:•Laugh out loud funny moments.•Realistic personalities that you want to be friends with.•I loved every character.•Reminded me of a Janet Evanovich book (which I loved).•Hot cops? Yes please.•Exciting edge of seat moments mixed with romance and comedy.Dislikes:•More commas would have helped the flow.•The cute, funny ending could have been a bit more realistic.•Not enough of a tie-in to the first book.•Some unfinished incidents and minor unanswered questions that most other people probably wouldn't even notice.Rating: 4.25-4.5 stars, 4 heatThe Down and Dirty:While I didn't quite love Kelly as much as I loved Sasha, it still had Rae's unique, funny-as-hell, realistic way best friends talk kind of dialogue. Kelly was a bit more over-the-top than Sasha, but it added a different, fun element. Another round of editing would have brought Kelly up to a 4.5 star read, but I don't know what was actually fixed after I read the ARC.

They are standalones so you need not read the first one but after reading Kelly, i actually went and one-clicked Sasha as i enjoyed it so much!Kelly is a 26 year old, social worker living a comfortable life untill all of a sudden the unthinkable happens – she looses her job! Now shes, mooching off her best friend whilst working as a waitress waiting to get her life back.Jesse is alpha male K9 cop with a tendency to be in the right place at the right time when it comes to Kelly, with having rescued her from a bad blind date and a harrowing experience involving, strippers, a pole and a helluv alot of cops! This book has it all, the right amount of comedy, sex and suspense. It almost had a slight KA’s Rock Chick’s feel to it, but was completely different if you know what i mean? Kelly and her best friend Ashley had the type of friendship every girl wishes for; a sisterhood! All in all, I highly recommend reading Kelly by Rae Matthews if you are looking for a good fun exciting read!* I was provided an Arc for an honest opinion *#lovefromNZ#abbeys1clickbookblog

I loved that Rae Matthews created down-to-earth, likable characters in real-life (or maybe not so much, especially with the mess Tini gets into) situations. While this book wasn't as laugh-out-loud funny as Sasha, it made a good follow-up second-in-the-series book.Kelly is a down-on-her-luck social worker who's just lost her job, and because she's out of work long enough she ends up losing the lifestyle to which she's become accustomed. One night she's out on a date with Benji the Star Wars buff, when in walks Holy Hotness and basically crashes the date, demonstrating first-date etiquette. There was instant chemistry between Kelly and Jesse (more on him in a bit) and I loved the byplay between these two rich, complex people.Of all of Bash's friends, Jesse was my favorite. He was the one who had the guts to warn Sasha about the stuff that Bash was dealing with regarding Emma. I'm so glad he got his own story! I loved the fact that Jesse Cox (yes, that is his real name) transfers from La Crosse, WI to Minneapolis to become a K9 officer. What I didn't like was what happened at the end. If a guy did that to my dog, I would gladly earn the nickname Ball Crusher.I loved Ashley, even if she did have a potty mouth on her. She was a strong, independent woman not afraid to go after what she wanted. And her sights are set on Jesse's partner Chad Badcock. (I love the names Ms. Matthews comes up with for her characters!)The story was great, the chemistry was sizzling like bacon in a skillet, and the characters were as rich and complex as a cup of fancy coffeehouse java. The realistic banter between the characters had me giggling from start to finish. Tini kept me guessing right from the start, and it was her story line that really held the book together. I hope she's able to find her own HEA in the series. While it wasn't as much fun as Sasha, it was still a great addition to the series. And not nearly as many errors as Sasha had. But it was still an awesome, light-hearted read with many LOL moments. I am anxiously anticipating the third book in the series!

The author satirically reminises about major events and societal changes that took place in his baby boomer lifetime. Movies, songs, TV shows, coloquialisms, parental biases, political events, religious norms, societal changes, all are addressed in a tonge-and-cheek fashion that fellow baby boomers will remember and others will learn about.

I enjoyed this book. Author Jeffery Lewis put together a short but amusing look at the life of baby boomers as told by expressions and song and movie titles. Lewis uses these to tell a somewhat disjointed story of the world as baby boomers knew it when we were young and how we know it today. Parts were superficial but some were very insightful and meaningful such as describing November 22, 1963 with a particularly poignant movie title. I recommend this book for baby boomers because of its insights and nostalgia.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a stunning collection collection By Helen C. Page You never know what you're going to get with a collection of poems, what glimpse of a person's childhood, family, dreams, history, regret. This collection made me wish I could write poems, which I can't. I wish I could pay tribute to my father and mother, the child I was the way this poet does. I was surprised and caught off guard throughout at how, in the blink of an eye, I was brought back to my childhood discovering the world in a shell, how alive my mother and father were again so long after they died. These poems made my heart ache, in sorrow and beauty.

Best Ebook PDF Flora And Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition), by Kate DiCamillo

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You!, is the just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry--and that Flora will be changed too, as she discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart. From Kate DiCamillo comes a laugh-out-loud story filled with eccentric, endearing characters and featuring an exciting new format--a novel interspersed with comic-style graphic sequences and full-page illustrations, all rendered in black-and-white by up-and-coming artist K. G. Campbell.

Flora And Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition), by Kate DiCamillo

From School Library Journal Gr 3–7—Flora starts off her 10th summer by promising her mother that she'll spend more time reading real books, and less time poring over the pages of her favorite superhero comics. But neither she nor her mother could have predicted that her summer would be one long superhero adventure, starring none other than Flora and her new pet squirrel, Ulysses. Ulysses gains super-squirrel strength after being sucked into a vacuum cleaner, and he changes the Buckman family's lives, renewing a sense of hope and optimism in Flora. Fans of the title's print version (Candlewick, 2013) will likely be disappointed by its audio adaptation. The novel features a number of fun cartoons, and does not translate well without the accompanying artwork, which plays a significant role in telling the story. While reader Tara Sands makes a valid attempt to differentiate male and female characters, she does not quite pull it off. The men in the novel come off sounding hokey and exaggerated. While DiCamillo's work shines on paper, the excessive use of dialogue tags, and absence of corresponding artwork, make this novel a poor choice as a read aloud.—Jennifer Furuyama, Pendleton Public Library, OR

From Booklist *Starred Review* The story begins with a vacuum cleaner. And a squirrel. Or, to be more precise, a squirrel who gets sucked into a Ulysses Super Suction wielded by Flora’s neighbor, Mrs. Tickham. The rather hairless squirrel that is spit out is not the same one that went in. That squirrel had only one thought: “I’m hungry.” After Flora performs CPR, the rescued squirrel, newly named Ulysses, is still hungry, but now he has many thoughts in his head. Foremost is his consideration of Flora’s suggestion that perhaps he is a superhero like The Amazing Incandesto, whose comic-book adventures Flora read with her father. (Drawing on comic-strip elements, Campbell’s illustrations here work wonderfully well.) Since Flora’s father and mother have split up, Flora has become a confirmed and defiant cynic. Yet it is hard to remain a cynic while one’s heart is opening to a squirrel who can type (“Squirtl. I am . . . born anew”), who can fly, and who adores Flora. Newbery winner DiCamillo is a master storyteller, and not just because she creates characters who dance off the pages and plots, whether epic or small, that never fail to engage and delight readers. Her biggest strength is exposing the truths that open and heal the human heart. She believes in possibilities and forgiveness and teaches her audience that the salt of life can be cut with the right measure of love. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: DiCamillo has a devoted following, plus this book has an extensive marketing campaign. That equals demand. Grades 3-6. --Ilene Cooper

Review Newbery-winner DiCamillo is a master storyteller not just because she creates characters who dance off the pages and plots, whether epic or small, that never fail to engage and delight readers. Her biggest strength is exposing the truths that open and heal the human heart. She believes in possibilities and forgiveness and teaches her audience that the salt of life can be cut with the right measure of love.--Booklist (starred review) Original, touching and oh-so-funny tale starring an endearingly implausible superhero and a not-so-cynical girl.--Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Despite supremely quirky characters and dialogue worthy of an SAT prep class, there's real emotion at the heart of this story involving two kids who have been failed by the most important people in their lives: their parents.--Publishers Weekly (starred review) Rife with marvelously rich vocabulary reminiscent of the early superhero era (e.g., "Holy unanticipated occurrences!") and amusing glimpses at the world from the point of view of Ulysses the supersquirrel, this book will appeal to a broad audience of sophisticated readers. There are plenty of action sequences, but the novel primarily dwells in the realm of sensitive, hopeful, and quietly philosophical literature.--School Library Journal (starred review) Eccentric characters, snappy prose and the fantastical plot give this delightful novel a giddy, over-the-top patina, but the core is big and hopeful, contemplative and bursting with heart. No small feat, even for a superhero like DiCamillo.--Shelf Awareness In "Flora and Ulysses," longtime fans will find a happy marriage of Mercy Watson's warmth and wackiness and Edward Tulane's gentle life lessons. In Flora, they will find a girl worth knowing, and one they will remember.--The New York Times Book Review Full of Ms. DiCamillo's dry, literate wit and bursting every so often into action-packed comic-strip sequences illustrated by K.G. Campbell... [a] funny, eccentric novel.--The Wall Street Journal [L]augh-out-loud funny, tender, difficult and hopeful all at once. ... Cynics beware, this book is meant for those open to joy, wonder, loyalty and friendship of all stripes.--The Huffington Post Kate DiCamillo's newest book ... is that rarest of all treasures, a truly inventive and appealing children's middle-grade novel.--The Boston Globe [A] fast-paced, funny tale. ... Like all of DiCamillo's books, Flora & Ulysses is filled with adventure, but also plenty of humor and soul. ... DiCamillo has seamlessly blended comic-book elements and a zany cast of characters into a thoroughly original, heartwarming tale.--BookPage This is a fun and clever tale of an unlikely hero uniting an even more unlikely cast of characters. Kate DiCamillo strikes again. Each character is well-drawn, the story is packed with fun references and asides. It's a perfect blend of poignancy and magic.--Fall 2013 Parents' Choice Book Awards DiCamillo does here what she does best, which is tell a deceptively simple story that elucidates big truths. ... And though the ideas are sophisticated, the storytelling is engaging enough to lure in a reader who might be put off by a doorstop of a novel. This slim volume also features illustrations by K.G. Campbell... [which] jell seamlessly with DiCamillo's prose.--Austin American Statesman Beautifully written... The accompanying illustrations and cartoons are enchanting, and the remarkable DiCamillo demonstrates she has storytelling power to spare.--The Chicago Tribune Though their adventures are wild and wacky, the heart of the story is about a girl adrift and how she finds her way home. Pencil illustrations and comic book panels by K.G. Campbell complement Kate DiCamillo's text perfectly. After reading "Flora and Ulysses, " you'll be asking when the next installment is due.--NPR Books Much like its furry hero, this swiftly paced tale is full of bold leaps and surprising turns. ... K.G. Campbell's occasional drawings supplement the narrative and brilliantly interpret the characters, from the partially bald Ulysses to chain-smoking Mom. As with her previous big-hearted novels, DiCamillo proves once again that "astonishments are hidden inside the most mundane being," and gives us another fantastic story.--The Washington Post Beautifully written... The accompanying illustrations and cartoons are enchanting, and the remarkable DiCamillo demonstrates she has storytelling power to spare.--The Chicago Tribune (syndicated from Tribune Newspapers) Brilliantly written and graphically engaging, it's filled with adventure, poetry, and compassion. Worth reading, and equally appealing for kids and adults.--The Boston Globe, Best of 2013

We've read excerpts aloud to my 15-year-old daughter who has never lost her appreciation for children's books (She must get it from me), and she loves what she's heard, and is going to read it next, now that I'm finished it. You can read the description yourself, but the characters speak to what was lovely about the book:FLORA -- A precocious (and self-proclaimed cynical) 10-year-old girl.ULYSSES -- A squirrel who got sucked up by a vacuum cleaner, the survival of which event gave him powers like flying and the ability to understand and communicateTOOTIE TICKHAM -- The neighbor, probably nosy but definitely supportive of FloraWILLIAM SPIVEY -- not William, not Billy -- Tootie's 11-year-old nephew who unexpectedly turns up in her (and thus Flora's) life. He is suffering from temporary blindness caused by trauma.MARY ANN -- A beautiful shepherdess keeping guard over the entry way (she's a lamp)There are other people who support or confound Flora and Ulysses. The whole story is sort of Flora's quest or ultimate understanding of love and support. I chuckled out loud many times as I read, but I was also moved several times. Some of the chapters start off with a comic strip panel of Ulysses' adventures, and there are a few other of K.G. Campbell's drawings throughout, which gave the story extra charm.CONTENT NOTE:This may seem like a cute little book with some comics throughout, appropriate for your high-reading 2nd grader. He or she could read it I'm sure, and might like it, but I believe this is a book best enjoyed when that more sophisticated sense of humor and vocabulary kicks in. My 4th grade son reads on a middle school level and has always had that kind of sense of humor, so I think he got enough of it to love the book appropriately, but I'm quite sure he'd enjoy it even more in another year or so.As I read it, I was surprised at the words used: "euphemistically" (which was used in contrast with literally, so maybe he figured it out), "malfeasance" (a word Flora picked up from her comic book superheroes who fight evil), and the shorter but still unfamiliar to grade-schoolers "cynic" (which is sort of defined about midway through the book). My point is not to criticize the book, because I truly loved it, as did my son, but to suggest to parents (teachers, librarians. aunts, grandparents) that this book might frustrate a younger or less mature child, and as a positive, that this is a book that middle schoolers would love as well if you could convince them to read it. There is also an emotional depth that will be better appreciated by more mature kids.

Hundley And I don't mean the title as an insult or backhanded compliment. My daughter and I come to this from the younger audience DiCamillo books - most specifically the wonderful, screwball Mercy Watson books. My daughter is a second-grader for whom this is a tad advanced, mostly in the vocabulary, though I suspect most of the target audience and even a few adults, may have trouble here and there with this. As a result, we used this as a read-aloud, with the graphic chapters shared in a huddle. Our composite review is a big thumbs up.In Flora, DiCamillo has created a wonderful main character - an extremely intelligent and sensitive 10-year-old girl living in a world in which the adults around her don't seem to have much use for her, so she reasonably views their world with a jaundiced eye. She retreats into "cynicism" and comics until the world rather rudely and amusingly puts her into contact with a most amazing squirrel and some pretty screwball characters who will by turns exasperate, fascinate and enlighten her into some of the ways other people chose, or fall into, to cope with their sometimes hostile and uncaring worlds.Despite how angsty that last paragraph is, the book is for the most part a hoot - it is just a hoot with a point or two to make. My daughter and I both came to like Flora's dad, understand her mom, adore Ulysses, the superhero squirrel (and despite some of the other reviews you might read - he DOES indeed save a life here), and appreciate William Spiver.Only complaint - and the reason for the docking of one star (though I wish I could dock only a half-star) - there are places here in which, much like the Mercy Watson books, DiCamillo pushes the quirkiness just a bit too far a bit too often. That said, there is a lot more here to like.

By Hello Kitchen I never thought that one of the perks of being a grandmother would be the ability to read children's books, alone in my room, without anyone blinking an eye. I may not be in the target age range of 8-12, but I'm glad that I had a chance to read Flora and Ulysses because I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt I could relate as an adult, when I read "Considering the human beings she was surrounded by, believing in a squirrel seemed like an increasingly reasonable plan of action." If only I had a squirrel in my life.I never imagined that a story about a squirrel could be so entertaining, especially since there are 68 chapters! They are short chapters, which makes it an easy read for kids of all ages. However, it also enticed me to read 'just one more' until the book was finished.I loved it! When my granddaughter was finally able to pry it from my hands, she fell just as deep into Flora's world and loved it as much as I did.

How hard can it be to ride bike from Canada to Mexico through some of the highest mountains in North America? In a series of essays and photos, "Bent on the Crest" tells the story of two men in their 50s who undertake this great adventure on their recumbent bicycles. Things don't turn out exactly as planned, but along the way the duo learns a lot about faulty map apps, spotty cell service, wet weather, questionable motels, creepy campgrounds, bad traffic, and glorious food. They also learn how important it is to consider factors such as age and elevation gain when plotting their course. By making some major adjustments they manage to stay the course, and the national parks and other attractions that they visit deliver a steady stream of majestic scenery, pleasant surprises, and food for thought.

Much more than a travel log By DivaSusan A wonderfully insightful reflection covering the inner journey through life's transitions as well as the miles along the trail. The author takes you along for the ride without the investment in spandex. His keen observations and delightfully quirky sense of humor keep you peddling to the next bend in the road. A highly recommended read.

Wise reflections - highly recommended By Lyle Bjork Although, from the viewpoint of one about to turn 72, Mr. Segaar's age doesn't seem like much of a barrier to his biking aspirations, I guess biking along a chain of mountains can be. But his age is an asset in that he has the wisdom and experience to share his loves, hopes, aspirations and realities in a clear fashion that unites whimsey, reflections, hard truths and personal stories. For hard core bikers (spoiler alert!), be aware that he and his husband don't actually complete the trip by bike but do discover that it isn't necessarily a failure. This is a rewarding book for anyone wise enough to both partake of it and overlook a few typos here and there. I read the kindle edition but I'm sure the pictures are worth buying a hard copy. Fans of Terry Pratchett are likely to enjoy the style. I look forward to his next book.

Just about every bridge player over forty has read Victor Mollo's Bridge in the Menagerie, a book that is on any list of the all-time top ten on the game. Towards the end of his life, Mollo continued to write stories about the same well-loved characters (Hideous Hog, Rueful Rabbit, Oscar the Owl and the rest), but they appeared in various magazines around the world, and if you weren't a subscriber, you didn't get to read them. This is the fourth and final collection of these lost Menagerie gems, collected for the first time in book form. Previous titles in this series: Bridge in the Menagerie; The Hog Takes To The Precision; Diamonds are the Hog's Best Friend; Swings and Arrows.

Last Call in the Menagerie, by Victor Mollo

About the Author The late Victor Mollo (London, UK) is one of the best-loved authors ever to write about bridge. He wrote many excellent how-to books on the game (including the classic Card Play Technique, with Nico Gardener) but it is as a humorist, and the author of Bridge in the Menagerie and its sequels, that he is best remembered.
