In 784 Broadway, author Jim Ring brings to life his immigrant Italian heritage through a delightful retelling of summer visits to his family’s small greengrocer store in Kingston, New York. When we meet Jim Ring, circa 1950, he is an eight-year-old who, with his brother Dan, can’t wait to surprise his great uncles with the family’s arrival at the Joseph Garbarino greengrocer store, located at 784 Broadway since 1894. Ring’s stories, rich with humor and wisdom, span nearly three decades and are an impressive chronicle of small-town life in the iconic Hudson Valley, including the family camp near the Ashokan Reservoir in West Hurley and a camp on the Hudson River tributary known as the Rondout Creek. As Ring tells it, these annual visits had a profound role in shaping his character and guiding him from childhood into adulthood, and influencing his career as an FBI agent. A gifted storyteller, Ring brings us unforgettable characters and stories that delight and linger.

About the Author James Ring is the author of the five-star terrorist thriller novel Necessary Assets. Ring is a retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent who investigated the American La Cosa Nostra and the Sicilian Mafia in New England. He received the Department of Justice’s highest award as the architect of the first and only electronic interception of the La Cosa Nostra/Mafia induction ceremony of new members, including the Omerta oath. After retiring from the FBI, Ring founded a business information and investigative service within a prestigious Boston law firm. Ring now devotes his full time to writing. Ring has written on two subjects he believes important. In the novel Necessary Assets, he offers the reader a candid view into the mind of terrorists, devoid of all conscience, who operate in small groups to be effective and avoid detection. He presents characters who are credible, memorable, interesting, and even somewhat unusual such as the Sicilian Mafia leader Vespa, who is beautiful as well as competent. She and her Mafia family want to help the FBI derail a terrorist bombing plot in order to protect their business interests. Ring’s second effort, 784 Broadway, is a remembrance, a sharing of his stories as told by a young boy, a teenager, and later as a parent and FBI agent who realizes how much his life was positively influenced by his Italian immigrant family. The family matriarch, Assunta “Susie” Garbarino, known to all simply as “Gram,” lived to be 97. With her husband, and later sons, she operated this greengrocer store in Kingston, New York from 1894 to 1959. 784 Broadway is an entertaining journey and may evoke the readers’ memories of those who similarly influenced their lives. Ring has two children, five grandchildren, and resides with his wife Merita in Boston’s Italian North End and South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. I think James Ring tells a terrific story demonstrating the power of love to form character. He tells of his immigrant family through episodes of childhood memory as well as through reflection as a family man himself. He does so with humor, compassion, affection and the skill of a wise teacher.

His vivid portrayal of a young boy's deep connection with his Italian immigrant relatives and the impact of their vision of family, community, and responsibility on his own evolving world view remind the reader of the powerful and sometimes unexpected role that certain individuals play in shaping the person we become. The reader is drawn into the world of an up-state New York green grocer and the rhythms of that time and place which were magical for a young boy eager to embrace the deep warmth of family and the thrill of summers in the mountains.

Enjoyable read, the Author sharing his life lessons By MEL23 The story is a lot more than the fun of an eight year old spending his summers with the Great Uncles, and working at their family greengrocer store in a small town, it is the life lessons that the Author shares from experiences all summer including fishing and cooking and "the camp" that trigger memories and make it an enjoyable read. The Author,s stories honor the past, keep us in the present but leave some moments to share our own family stories with our own families or friends, and let the next generation figure it out....as the author has.
