The range of topics in the first segment of the book is refreshing and solidly existential. He takes us from sadness to joy, from solemnity to whimsy and from everyday life to cosmic wonder and throughout, he remains loyal to existential philosophy. In the second section of the book, he is anything but that. He takes us on a tour of things past. Speaking of lost youth, his family and home life; you can see, hear and smell those things of his experience. Though he and I are of a different time and place, his experiences are mine and, I suspect, everybody else’s too. Exchange his Aunt Rose with my Aunt Florence, and he has nailed me perfectly. In the third and final section of the book, entitled “Reflections” the author offers 61 poems, each topic uniquely different, ranging from adoration to zeal and including contrapoints such as lust and love, eternity and transience, religion and iconoclasm, greed and generosity and many others. He finally reveals himself as a complex man and holds a mirror up to the reader’s own complexity. I devoured the book and at the end was hungry for more. I look forward to the next.

Poetry About Being Human By jvp1230 I have known Sherman for many years, and I have published several books for him, including this one, his latest title, Collage. I can assure you that he works diligently on composing and revising his poetry. What I admire most about his poems is that they truly tell stories that have meaning. He is very socially conscious, and wants to bring to our attention the situations and emotions of being human. He not only writes about family and friends, but about the plight of men and women in all different walks of life. And he does all this in a colorful way, using language that flows easily on the page. You will want to read these poems over and over, and ponder their messages.

His writing is an extension of his love of family, especially his beautiful wife Mikki. Sherman taught me the best way to read poetry is out loud! So there I sit reading to my 2 dogs who hang on to every word. A lovely coffee table book to display or pass on for others to enjoy!
