I wanted to make sure that they would not only like it but would get something of substance out of it. I found it to me not only a kids book but as an adult I found myself laughing out loud over it. All four heroes like all heroes seem to have, are possessed with special attributes that work in their favor later in the story. I liked this book a lot and recommend it to children with advanced reading skills or you could read it to your children as well.

I like very much the cute characters and the fact that the drawing are simple and the text not so long.My kids (2 and 5) interacted so much and made up so much along the storytelling. The book really stimulates imagination. There were not any scary scenes which is often a problem in children's book....I love the message that a king, a musician, a warrior all have useful skills and especially when teaming up that they get extremely poweful.Beautiful!

“Do you think you could teach Rock Hudson to talk like you do?”

The question came from famed Hollywood director George Stevens, and an affirmative answer propelled Bob Hinkle into a fifty-year career in Hollywood as a speech coach, actor, producer, director, and friend to the stars. Along the way, Hinkle helped Rock Hudson, Dennis Hopper, Carroll Baker, and Mercedes McCambridge talk like Texans for the 1956 epic film Giant. He also helped create the character Jett Rink with James Dean, who became a best friend, and he consoled Elizabeth Taylor personally when Dean was killed in a tragic car accident before the film was released.

A few years later, Paul Newman asked Hinkle to do for him what he’d done for James Dean. The result was Newman’s powerful portrayal of a Texas no-good in the Academy Award–winning film Hud (1963). Hinkle could—and did—stop by the LBJ Ranch to exchange pleasantries with the president of the United States. He did likewise with Elvis Presley at Graceland. Good friends with Robert Wagner, Hinkle even taught Wagner’s wife Natalie Wood how to throw a rope. He appeared in numerous television series, including Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Dragnet, and Walker, Texas Ranger. On a handshake, he worked as country music legend Marty Robbins’s manager, and he helped Evel Knievel rise to fame.

From his birth in Brownfield, Texas, to a family so poor “they could only afford a tumbleweed as a pet,” Hinkle went on to gain acclaim in Hollywood. Through it all, he remained the salty, down-to-earth former rodeo cowboy from West Texas who could talk his way into—or out of—most any situation. More than forty photographs, including rare behind-the-scenes glimpses of the stars Hinkle met and befriended along the way, complement this rousing, never-dull memoir.

Call Me Lucky: A Texan in Hollywood, by Robert Hinkle

About the Author From the rodeo to the studio, Robert Hinkle's career has spanned the latter half of the 20th century. Whether acting, directing or producing. Texas Bob has touched the lives of many of the entertainment industry's marquis names. His own eclectic accomplishments can be attributed to a passion for living, a talent for entertaining others, and flair for the dramatic.

In 1952 after 30 months in U. S. A. F. he left behind a rodeo future calf-roping/bull-dogging career to try his hand at acting in Hollywood. As forsaking rodeo lights for studio lights, Hinkle confesses: "I didn't have that little extra something that it takes to be a world champion cowboy like my friend Larry Mahan." His acting debut came after crashing the Universal Pictures studio lot during the filming of "Bronco Busters" Bob's western appearance and demeanor caught the director's eye and landed him a role as a cowboy stuntman.

Hinkle's authentic screen presence led to many other roles over the years, including these "Hud" with Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood in "First Traveling Sales Lady." Starring Ginger Rogers in the last motion picture Howard Hughes produced. He had roles in well known TV westerns such as "Wagon Train," "Gunsmoke," "Wyatt Earp," "Wells Fargo," "Tombstone Territory," "Bonanza," "Annie Oakley," Trackdown," 'Wichita Town," "Walker Texas Ranger," and many more.

The 1955 production of the classic movie "Giant" marked a turning point for Hinkle. Bob was the movie's dialogue director and technical director, and as such helped create the role of Jett Rink for James Dean. Bob's easy-going manner and down-home drawl made him the perfect candidate to coach Rock Hudson, Carroll Baker, Dennis Hopper, Mercedes McCambridge and Dean to "talk Texan." Dean later presented his friend Hinkle with an Oscar for his contribution to the film's towering success.

On the production end, Hinkle's most notable inspiration was director George Stevens and his ability to elicit extraordinary performances from the cast of "Giant." Starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean.

In 1960 Universal Pictures released the motion picture "Old Rex" a family movie about a boy and his dog which Hinkle wrote, directed and produced. Other notable productions included "Born Hunters," a short subject which led to a contract with Paramount Studios.

Hinkle also brought his experience from "Giant" along with his own productions to the set of "Hud" in 1962. Bob did for Paul Newman what he had done for James Dean by coaching Newman, Patricia Neal and Melvin Douglas to be Texans, Neal and Douglas won Academy Awards for their roles.

Hinkle also received critical acclaim for creating and directing the pig scramble in "Hud." At various times he wore the hats of technical advisor, second-unit director and associate producer, positions which he enjoyed as much if not more than acting.

Beginning in the 1960s Hinkle's talents branched out to other facets of entertainment industry. In 1964 he signed an unknown singer named Glen Campbell to a series of country music specials with Jeannie Seely and Henson Cargill called "Hollywood Jubilee." That same year he became the Personal Manager for character actor Chill Wills.

In 1968 a young unknown stunt performer, named Robert Craig Knievel, asked Hinkle to help make him a household name on the magnitude of Elvis Presley. For the next 3 years Hinkle developed and promoted "Evel Knievel" as he became the world's best known showman-daredevil.

In 1970 Hinkle became the Personal Manager for Marty Robbins, Bob and Marty stayed a team until Robbins's death in 1982. It was actually Robbins who first dubbed Hinkle as "Texas Bob."

In 1972 Hinkle combined his film productions roots with country music background by producing and directing "Country Music," released by Universal Studios and starring Marty Robbins and Sammy Jackson. This was followed in 1973 by "Guns of a Stranger," starring Robbins and Chill Wills.

In 1982 he pulled out all the stops when he produced and directed a motion picture entitled "Atoka," in which 100,000 people got together for a picnic with Willie Nelson, Larry Gatlin, Don Williams, Freddy Fender, Hoyt Axton, David Allen Coe, Freddy Weller, Red Steagall and Marty Robbins as host.

Later as General Manager of Network One in Nashville, Hinkle produced numerous TV shows, music videos and national commercials.

In addition to Hinkle's entertainment pursuits he also managed to find time to become a licensed pilot, dabbled in Real Estate in California, and opened two restaurants in Tacoma, Washington. Both were called Texas Bob's Bar B Q. He later opened Texas Bob's Porterhouse in Moses Lake, Washington.

His most memorable achievement, however, goes back to winning a bet with a buddy in 1950. Hinkle bet $20.00 that he could get a date with the Queen of the Rodeo in Moses Lake.

After introducing himself to Sandra Larson he dedicating his bull ride to her along with a tip of his hat from the c1832-1921

Highly Recommend This Book By Ernest Leon Gandy I borrowed the book from my Mom and absolutely couldn't put it down until I finished it, very well written. I know anyone would enjoy this book about all of the actors and singers that Bobby Hinkle has worked with during his 50 years in show business. It is almost like being there with him as he shares the very interesting and personal stories of the movie and recording stars we all grew up with. I highly recommend this book to anyone, a wonderful read! EG

I recently got to meet and chat with Bob Hinkle at the Fairmount Historical Museum in Indiana; Fairmount of course being the hometown of movie star, James Dean...It was the DeanFest weekend in September on Parade Day Saturday and Mr. Hinkle had just served as Grand Marshal, gliding down Main Street in a full sized bright blue parade boat Caddy on four wheels that came to rest along the side of a rode next to an old two story red brick house with large front porch, whereupon he had set up a table with help from his wife Sandy-as they proceeded to offer for sale his newly written tome; 'Call Me Lucky: A Texan in Hollywood.' I was immediately impressed by Bob's candor and repore with folks who stood patiently in line waiting to chat with and get an autograph from the smiling Texan. When it came my turn to say hello and ask Bob to sign my book, He was grinning broadly right at me, putting out his hand to shake mine and instantly making me feel like an old friend. He offered me a chair to sit next to he and Sandy, proceeding to tell my sister and I-several fascinating, wonderful stories about many interesting things he had done which included an amazing recollection of events surrounding the filming of the 1955 film he worked with James Dean on known as 'GIANT.' Bob made it all sound SO REAL and insightful-it was almost (for me) like being there! I enjoyed it immensely! Best time I've had in ages! Then he signed my personal copy of his book; "For my friend Kevin, best wishes to you-Robert Hinkle." He also gave me an autographed black an white still photo of he with James Dean, working with a lasso rope on a movie set for 'Giant.' I was blown away by his kindness and desire along with ability to listen to my questions and comments about the movie, he is truley an amazing person and storyteller; I was so glad to be there and meet him. I highly recommend 'Call Me Lucky: A Texan in Hollywood' to all who are ready for a fascinating, vivid visit down memory lane to 'old Big Hollywood' coupled with an intimate/up close and personal look at who and what some of the legendary movie stars and directors were in that era. I am reading it again right now!

First of all, he knows how to tell an interstging story. Bob does a wonderful job of capturing the essesence of West Texas; the freindly people, the expanse of the land, and the impact both have on a person. I have heard about Bob Hinkle all my life from my Uncle Archie (one of Bob's friends)and from my Dad (who owned the local movie theaters for years#. I can assure you that what you will read is the way it was #giving some grace for rememberances of events that happened over 50 years ago)."Call Me Lucky" was an entertaining and fun read. I laughed out loud at several of the stories. I cried when reading about the death of James Dean. Bob's personality and person shines through in the book. If you are looking for a behind the scenes look at the movie industry (without all the trash) and an enjoyable look at the life of a "good ole' boy" who had a "lucky" life because he was just being himself; then you should read this book.

Occasional comedian and full-time worrier Neil Hughes isn't the kind of person you'd expect to write a helpful book. He's an idiot.Or, at least, so his Inner Critic is constantly telling him. No wonder he's anxious! But somehow, during his nervous bumbling through life, he learned to live with anxiety and to manage the unhelpful mental habits he'd picked up along the way.Oh... and he stumbled on the Meaning of Life, too.Now he's sharing hilarious real-life stories, inventive fantasy fiction and badly-drawn graphs to help you to be less anxious and more happy. In this compelling, surprising and delightful guide to life for humans, Neil explores the roots of anxiety and how to (gently) uproot them, all while battling the irritating interruptions from his doubtful Inner Critic. Then - after handling love, crises, relationships, purpose, and contentment - he even makes time to consider how we can solve death and the Meaning of Life itself.Whether you're pitying Neil's hapless attempts to navigate the real world, or joining him on imaginary adventures to outer space or magical shops, you'll discover deep insights into anxiety, new techniques to live more happily, and plenty of laughs along the way. And, somehow, it turns out everything can be explained using custard...NOT PRAISE FOR NEIL HUGHES"It's not bad, I suppose" - Neil's Mum"Neil has a pleasing use of commas" - Anonymous"it is a book" - Isla McLoughlin, aged 2-and-a-halfSOME PRAISE FOR NEIL HUGHES"To merely call it a self-help book would be a complete disservice to the author. Part biography, part guide, and part Brother's Grimm Fairy Tales of the Strange... if only I had read this growing up then I might not have felt so alone." - Claire Eastham, weallmadhere.com"A brave book and a noble one because, really, what better thing can a person do with their own suffering than to use it to try and help others. It's on my read-this-again shelf." - Nathan Filer, author of The Shock of the Fall

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A great combination! By Bridie Anderson To be honest, my inner critic is taunting me right now about writing a review for a semi-self help book and my lack of experience in doing so. Although, I must admit, my IC is not quite as harsh as Neil's seems to be throughout this book. A quick message for Neil (and his IC): Your inner critic was wrong. A humorous book for the anxious was a good idea.Neil is not, to my knowledge, a doctor of any sort. He has, however, first hand experience in dealing with and struggling with anxiety. This book is a light hearted, non-technical (mostly) guide to finding your way through anxiety and coming out the other side. For any of you who have dealt with this, when you are in the midst of it all, there is no view of an end; no light at the end of the tunnel; no ground to plant your feet on etc. What Neil is trying to do, is help you spot the unrecognisable land/light/end from the haze. And help you laugh while your at it. Tell me that you haven't found yourself relaxing at a moment of unexpected laughter? I have! And it helps.I must admit that there are aspects to this book, and therapy for anxiety in general (which I have a small amount of experience with myself) that I do not agree with. Actually, that is not put correctly because I do not think that they are wrong, I just think that they are wrong for me. What I am talking about in particular are the 'exercises'. I don't like exercises. But that is just me. And that is a small part of the big picture, the rest of which I agree with. For people who do like exercises and find that this helps them, you are in luck. Neil gives you exercises. Then there is the message that I wholeheartedly agree with, because it was exactly what I did - trade anxiety for contentment. For some people, it can be a choice. For Neil and for myself, it was a choice. It is a daily choice, but a choice nonetheless. Neil talks you through the importance of finding self-love and escaping the custard traps (this will make sense when you read it!)Apart from the self-help stuff, I liked the writing and humour. Occasionally, and only rarely, I wished for less jokes. And usually, within a paragraph or two, I got my wish. This idea that could have easily gone so badly, has turned out wonderfully. It is a thrilling mixture of stories ("A fictional statistic I just thought up indicates that books are exactly twice as enjoyable if they contain a story set in Paris. So let's have one of those."), experiences, lessons, and well, custard.I would recommend this book to those who, like me, don't like being told how to 'fix' themselves by someone who gives no indication that they have ever experienced what you have experienced. This book will at least make you realise you are not alone, and will hopefully make you see that someone who experienced those life altering and life restricting inner critic thoughts has been able to use what held him back to move forward with life. And, in amidst all the humour and light heartedness, you will find honest, important gems like this one: "Asking for help is a signal of strength, not weakness. It shows that you value yourself enough to do the difficult task of leaning on another and being vulnerable to them."*** I received a copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own honest feelings about the book.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Light-hearted, friendly, yet insightful and incredibly helpful for dealing with life's problems By R.C. I did not expect this book to be so awesome. I was drawn in by the self-effacing and amusing voice and even as I bought it I thought, "this is probably going to be pretty lightweight, but hey, it looks like a fun read."I was so very wrong. This is a substantial, surprisingly comprehensive, multifaceted, and utterly down-to-earth guide to how to work with your own brain to short-circuit bad habits, habitual worries, feedback loops, and crusty old beliefs to free yourself from the quicksand/custard of your own head. It offers practical tools and tips to help you work with your own beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors to help relieve anxiety by increasing your ability to let go of things that aren't important and giving you overall coping mechanisms to deal with everything else. Before I get into the things I loved, a few things that might be helpful: this book mentions suicidal thoughts pretty early on, so anyone who would be affected by that, beware. Also, it does not touch on medication or seeking professional help for anxiety or other mental illnesses. In fact, that's a downside, I think. The tips in here will likely be helpful to everyone, but some acknowledgement that altered brain chemistries can sometimes be made 1000X easier to deal with when medicated would have been nice.On to: Reasons I Love This Book:- It is practical. The book is filled with actual exercises that you can do to put into practice what you're reading about. These are all excellent and usually focus not on "do X and you will feel Y", but at training your brain to look at things differently. This is something I like best about this book: it's not going to beat you up for not being able to meditate for 30 min every day. It will instead give you a plethora of tools and let you decide what will work best for you.- It has a fresh voice and an innovative, down-home take on the topic. This book is about putting mindfulness and thought processes to work for you. But it does not get too deeply into the whys and wherefores of either religion or science. It's advice that doesn't take itself too seriously, like the author is friend you asked to help you out. It's a conversation, not a lecture. The author doesn't set himself up as an expert, and neither is he selling anything, and that combination is actually very refreshing in this genre.- It is comprehensive. This is a substantial book, and I found myself several times going "I hope he talks about X!" and lo and behold, he did two chapters later. It's organized differently than other self-help books I've read, but he rounded out his thoughts, covered all the major bases, and overall left you feeling like he'd adequately covered every issue he brought up.- It isn't afraid to wade into the deep water topics and how they actually impact your life. Instead of lumping all existential questions into a chapter on "dealing with death", there's a wider discussion. There's even a section at the end that talks about how to live with the knowledge that eventually the universe will collapse into its own heat death, or with lack of meaning in general. And the advice here is solid, giving you fresh perspectives on those thoughts and possible ways to look at the issues differently. This book is at least 5X better than I was expecting. Maybe 10x better. I bought it for myself and actually now want to give physical copies to everyone I know who could use a little mindfulness in their life but who would be scared off by any whiff of New Age or Buddhism. This is a book on mindfulness you could give to your white-bread grandmother (and I might do just that.)

Believe me when I say, Hughes' makes it work in this funny and intriguing book..-"The Mind is Its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven" - MiltonWhen I saw Neil looking for reviewers on http://bookblogs.ning.com/, I was excited to read and review this book. With Neil working as a comedian, I had high hopes for this book and I was not disappointed As a fellow sufferer of anxiety, and someone who knows first hand how crappy the disorder is, I found this book relatable and funny. Many of Hughes' anecdotes about his inner voice and experiences remind me of myself. I find self-help books difficult to review because there are no characters, setting or plot to analyze. What I can say however, is that the advice and experience Neil has put forth in this book is useful, even invaluable. Considering the author is just your average bloke writing about his anxiety, the book is a much more approachable read than many of the anxiety books written by “experts” that are available. I loved this book so much I ordered a copy on amazon.ca - I believe it will be a great book to have on hand during my more anxious times. To conclude, Anxiety and mental health is an issue that needs to be talked about. Hughes' with the aid of humour and experience, introduces the conversation to readers.Inner Critic: This is a wonderful, and humorous look at anxiety. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Possibly the best known wargamer in the world, Donald Featherstone is well-known for more than a score of books on wargaming and also for editing the original wargaming magazine for 18 years. He is one of the people responsible for raising it from a minor fringe interest to the worldwide pastime and commercial interest of today. The whole wonderful world of wargaming is vividly brought to life in this ultimate of books by the doyen of the subject's authors. Full of passion, inspiration, practicality, it suggests ideas, improvements, and anecdotes that jump from the pages of the substantial and beautifully illustrated work. There are entertaining and practical main chapters, shorter features, and scores of snippets, with tips and anecdotes ... a great depth of writing and illustration to harness the enthusiasm of newcomers to the hobby and sharpen that of old hands. Details, new methods, and general stimulation come across in a variety of enterprising ways. All the obvious ingredients are here such as each period and battle is described as a significant example of the art of warfare and development of tactics through the ages. But it is the book's unique recipe of short and long contributions all by the same famous author that make it uniquely rich and almost certainly the standard work for decades to come. This book has been extensively revised. The History of Wargaming Project is edited by John Curry. It aims to present the very best wargaming books and rules to a modern audience.

Both consist primarily of old magazine articles by the great Donald Featherstone not reprinted elsewhere. The original paper edition is, for me, the classic miniature wargamer's bedside reading. The articles are reprinted almost randomly, and interspersed with them is a collection of amusing "down at the wargames club" anecdotes in the best Jorkens tradition. There's all the infectious Featherstone enthusiasm, and the pictures are the best of miniature wargaming eye candy. The revised version available for kindle is an excellent handbook. The illustrations and anecdotes are largely gone, and the material reordered and I think somewhat edited to discuss various types and periods of miniature warfare and then follow with an illustration of putting such a battle onto the tabletop. If I were starting, I'd go for the kindle version. As a veteran of well over a generation of miniature wargaming, it's the original paper book which stays close by--but I'm glad I bought both.Disclaimer: I was fortunate enough to attend Don Featherstone's last lecture in North America some years ago. I couldn't give anything he wrote less than four stars. Good thing I'll never need to.

Remember to be kind to strangers, for many have entertained werewolves unawares.

The last time Stella tried to celebrate Valentine’s Day, she caught her husband enjoying the fruits of his young receptionist. She thought February 14th would forever be spent hunkering down with a movie, ice cream and wine. This year, a series of happy accidents brings Mike Wolfe into her life. Mike celebrates her curves in ways she never dreamed of and finds her personality quirks endearing. In his excitement over his new love, he can’t seem to find the right moment to tell her about his own quirk … that he’s a wolf shifter. Adding to the mess, Stella’s ex-husband would rather see her dead than happy. Will Mike be able to protect her? Will she stay when he reveals his secret? This stand-alone tale is based on the short story “Special Delivery” by Cynthia Fox. It has been expanded into a novella with 25,000+ words and given a sexy, paranormal twist.

I so enjoyed this book By Kimberly Setting: Moonstone Harbor ContemporaryGenre: Shifter romanceStella Davis is a divorcée who is hating on Valentines Day because the last time she observed it, she took sushi to her husband's office for a surprise lunch, only to find his face in some other woman's sushi. So to speak. So now she's at home with her pint of ice cream and Oprah when the doorbell rings and she finds a gorgeous man with his arms full of roses. For the woman down the street. Oops! Wrong house. But Mike, the florist delivery guy, comes back later, they end up chatting for a while, and so their relationship begins. It isn't insta-love, but the lust comes on pretty fast. One thing leads to another and Stella ends up working for Wolfe in Bloom, Mike's florist shop. The problem is that Mike is a shifter and can't seem to find the right time to share the info. There's also a side of danger with this main dish. This is such a good story! I really like that Mike isn't your typical dark and broody Alpha shifter. He's fun, and excited about getting to know Stella, and worried about how she will react if he ever gets around to sharing the info about his true nature. Stella is a confident woman who wasn't willing to take her ex's s***. She isn't hung up on how she looks, and doesn't think she's not good enough because Mike is so gorgeous. Instead, she is enjoying him and everything he can bring to the relationship. And while there is a lot of sex - explicit but not raunchy - there's more than that in the relationship. The dialogue and some of the situations had me laughing out loud a few times. Really, I smiled all the way through it. The story is simple, but given that this is only 114 pages, character and plot development are excellent. The writing itself is delightful. I noticed only a couple of typos, but nothing major. Now, where the heck is Simon's story? Poor guy is lonely...

Hart I found this novella to be packed with lots of humor, a healthy dose of hot & dirty lovin' as well as a vile ex-husband hell bent on revenge who added a dark element to the story. The shady former spouse provided an interested counter to the abundant humor and hot sex. I was frequently overcome with bouts of delighted giggles while reading this story and I just can't recommend it highly enough if you enjoy paranormal romance with a comedic twist seasoned with some HOT down & dirty bedroom/walk-in cooler/beach action!

The strong heroine who quickly got her man and her HEA is expected but the journey is exceptional. I laughed, screamed and got breathless right a!long with her and for a jaded reader like myself that was unusual.

The ultimate Hollywood story revealed: the sizzling relationship between Joseph Kennedy, patriarch of America’s most influential political family, and Gloria Swanson, one of the most prominent silent film stars of her day. Gloria and Joe were in love with each other and with the movies, especially Queen Kelly, which completed the real-life ménage à trois. Starring along with the star of the screen and the Boston Brahman in this exposé are Erich von Stroheim, Kennedy’s wife Rose, Swanson’s husband, and a cast of colorful hangers-on. Madsen recreates their love, scandal, and world, which in its extravagance and intrigue has never been surpassed.

Gloria and Joe: The Star-Crossed Love Affair of Gloria Swanson and Joe Kennedy, by Axel Madsen

Review “Axel Madsen shows Gloria Swanson and Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., in such a satisfyingly full-blown way that few readers—even Kennedys—will carp about invasion of privacy or mud on the idol. . . . [An] unstoppable read. . . . Reckless love, seen big.” —Kirkus Reviews   “Covering events in the lives of both principals until their deaths, the author also adds gossip about the Kennedy clan and members of the film colony.” —Publishers Weekly “Gloria and Joe is great reading. Madsen [is] an expert on Hollywood. . . . The great strength of his book . . . is the background against which the somewhat torrid events were played out—Hollywood at the end of the silent era, in a time of enormous scandals and just before the entire American economy collapsed. It would make a fabulous movie.” —Cosmopolitan

About the Author Axel Madsen authored twenty-two books, including sixteen biographies. His most notable works include an in-depth look at the life of a legendary fashion icon, Chanel: A Woman of Her Own, and an investigation of the relationship between Gloria Swanson and Joe Kennedy, Gloria and Joe: The Star-Crossed Love Affair of Gloria Swanson and Joe Kennedy. Madsen began his journalism career as a legman for columnist Art Buchwald in Paris, and later wrote one of the first books on television’s longest-running news magazine show, 60 Minutes: The Power and the Politics of America’s Most Popular TV News Show. As a 20th Century Fox publicist, he handled Robert Redford, Paul Newman, and George C. Scott, and was fired off Myra Breckinridge for siding with director Mike Sarne against producer Robert Fryer. His Hollywood biographies include the life stories of directors William Wyler, John Huston, and Barbara Stanwyck, as well as an examination of Golden Age Hollywood’s gay underground in The Sewing Circle. He wrote and produced the ITV documentary version of The Sewing Circle. Over the years, Madsen interviewed scores of movers and shakers, from legends like Goldwyn and Selznick to directors like Howard Hawks, Louis Milestone, and Rouben Mamoulian. Madsen died in 2007.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Adequate presentation By Anyechka This book covered an interesting topic, but the writing style left something to be desired. At times it was page-turning and lively, but for a lot of the time it just wasn't written in a very lively and compelling style. From what I've found out, Mr. Madsen's other books suffer from the same problem; they're not badly written per se, just written in a way that gets the facts across and never really goes deeper to make the material compelling and personally involving to the reader. The title refers to the three-year affair between Gloria Swanson and Joe Kennedy, Sr., which was set in motion because they began a business alliance in the late Twenties. Along the way we also got biographical information about Gloria and Joe both before, during, and after the affair. Although as interesting as a lot of these incidents were, it really read more like a report or essay instead of a biography that really conveyed a sense of the author having real enthusiasm and passion for his two subjects. And it was pretty dull to read about all of the business deals and stockholders' meetings, let alone in such detail.I haven't read any of Mr. Madsen's other books, but I have found out that there as in this book, he really does seem obsessed or overly concerned about peoples' sexual orientation. A lot of times he'll refer to or introduce someone as, say, "a gay screenwriter," even if that has nothing to do with the overall story. And some of the people whom he is so convinced were gay just weren't; for example, Alla Nazimova was probably bisexual instead of lesbian, and it appears to just be an old unfounded rumor that Natacha Rambova (whose forname he can't even spell correctly) was a lesbian. Mr. Madsen also makes the claim that her marriage to Rudolph Valentino was never consummated, which blatantly contradicts everything else I've ever read about them. Most couples should be as sexually active as they were. There are also a few other things that are similarly gossipy and unfounded, sort of written in a kind of sensationalistic way, or just repeating old Hollywood gossip and rumors that have been disproven more than just a few times. There was some great material here, about some interesting events, I just wish that it had been written in a more lively style and been more professional instead of succumbing to gossip or Mr. Madsen's strange obsession in outing people he thinks he were gay.
