Hutton worked as a barber at the Savoy Hotel and retained his job and his lodgings in Sutton, Surrey, for two years after moving in with Mercury, and then worked as his gardener. 51 of 54 people found the following review helpful. A Review By Diane Just finished this book. I've read both Peter Freestones book and this one and I think I liked this one better. Only because it seemed to flow a little bit better. Personally, I feel Freestone's book was much more respectful of the memories of life working and living with Freddie. Having said that. Do I believe everything that Jim wrote about? Hmmm, I wasn't there so I can't say. But permit me to share my opinions. Do i really believe that Jim had no idea whatsoever who Freddie Mercury was when he first met him? I find that hard to believe. Do I think they had this great love affair? Freddie had a penchant for keeping certain past loves employed by him so though I do believe they did have a romantic relationship, I'm not sure it lasted the full 6-7 years. Some of the things Jim writes about I feel we didn't need to know. That his last two words ever spoken where 'pee, pee', or the details of his final moments on earth. I don't know. It seems almost cruel, I hope that if anyone witnesses my last moments on earth, they have the dignity and respect to keep it to themselves or share only with close family. Some of his comments about freddie seem almost mean spirited, for example: He would put his hand up to cover the lower part of his face, especially when he guffawed like a donkey. Hmmm, I know he had help in writing this, but I would hope he had final say in what would be written in his book, maybe not? I find it interesting that people who are involved/associated with famous people choose to write about them AFTER they are gone. Could it be they know they would be ostrasized/disinherited if they chose to do so while that person is alive. Or maybe there is a law against it? I mean really, this man knew how private Freddie was. I read an somewhere where Jim said that he didn't believe it was Freddie's choice to make a final statement about his illness, that Freddie would have said "it's none of their business" REALLY? And yet Jim thinks that Freddie would think Jim's book IS our business? I don't know, even Mary has said some things about Freddie since his death I'm sure he wouldn't want made public, What? How come she never made public statements when he was alive? Oh yeah, he would have disinherited her. I don't know. Did Mary treat these men poorly. Again, one sided. She gave them the option to take things from the home. Gave them 3 months to find new accomidations. They weren't living on the streets during this time, they where living in another section of his property the 'Mews'. The section of the book where it explains that she stopped by and found that the alarm wasn't turned on. That would have angered me too. Here this woman is entrusted with his home (and i'm guessing all the personal papers, letters, mementos) of this man throughout his lifetime and not to mention the fact that I'm sure after his death there was probably an increase of fanatical fans trying to get inside his home, I probably would have done the same thing as she did. That's alot of responsibility for a person. I'm not sure i'm buying the "freddie wanted me to live there if i wanted after his death". This was not a foolish man. He would have had this written into his will. He had plenty of time to include this into his will if that was truly his decision. I'm guessing he knew or had a 'feeling' of the friction between Jim & Mary. I don't think Freddie for a second would expect Mary to live out her life with any of his ex lovers/friends as house mates. I do commend these three men for taking care of Freddie in his last years, especially his last days (though again, we really didn't need the deets) of those agonizing last moments. I wonder though, had Jim written this book while Freddie was alive (of course, minus the last moments of his life)what Freddies reaction might have been? I wonder if Freddie had written a book about their relationship, how that might have read. My point being. This is one sided. We'll never know the true story of Freddie Mercury and his inner circle because he chose not to write an auto-biography. Why? Because he was a private person. What i'm trying to say here is this - we are all very complex and how we interpet a situation will be diffent in how the other person involed may interpet the same situation. This story is one sided and there are simply two sides to every story when it involes two people. I think in the future when reading about famous people, I will stick to auto-biographies.But at the end of the day i can say this much. Freddie Mercury was a flawed human being as we all are. He had a talent that he shared with the world. A man who was kind to his family, friends and fans. A man who is missed by many.

People call it "cheesy", but it should be BACK IN PRINT By A Customer After I have read this book, I was angry with people, who either dismissed this book as Jim Huttons's weepy-cheesy attempt to make a quick buck from FM's death, or who ran Hutton down for "breaking confidentiality", by telling the TRUTH in this book. Both of those groups of poeple are COMPELETELY WRONG. Firstly, I, too, found this book a bit weepy in style, but later I realized that it was through no fault of Hutton's, but rather book's editor (Tim Wapshott, if my memory serves my right, who has a general tendency towards "over-dramatizing" things). Publishers, no doubt, also wanted a weepier version, so that people would be willing to buy a book from an unknown man. As for Hutton's atttempt to make money, let me remind you that while FM was alive nobody (public and fans) ever knew, who FM's "husband" was, much less his name...Hutton did not flash in front of the cameras (unlike some lovers of today's celebrities). So, it is unfair to say that Hutton tried to profit with this book. Instead, this book should be seen as his attempt to channel his grief towadrs something positive and to express his own feeings. I, personally, thank him for this book. Obviously, being an honest person, he did not idealize FM in his memories and THAT IS WHAT I LIKED BEST! . Let's also not forget that Hutton himself is affected with HIV, so it is good that we have this book to read, before it is too late. Secondly, people, who were offended by this book's intimate details, well... SORRY, but this is who FM was... not some angel, but a real person with his ups and downs, 100% gay man, who lived with another man, died from a painful decease, and had other things to think about (his past, his relation to God, his family, his loved ones) than his fans or press, while he was sick. I was especially touched by the last part of the book, where Hutton says something like.... "/for lovers/ not to waste time on stupid arguments and misunderstandings, because the day will come and it is gonna be too late...instead, just listen to your hearts, etc." I think it is a beautiful message, and that we could all learn something from Hutton/FM example.
31 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Freddie was the Greatest Performer the world has seen By P. Jacobs I couldn't put this book down. It is revealing. It does share intimate details. It does show the faces of Freddie. It does chronicle his deteriorating condition due to AIDS. It does show the not too flattering behavior of Freddie's inner-circle after his death. Would Freddie have wanted seven years of his life spilled out to the public in printed words? Probably not. Yet, I believe he would have understood Mr. Hutton's need to share this most important and wonderful part of his life with the world. I, for one, appreciate the work he put into this book, including the beautiful candid pictures of Freddie. It must have taken great effort to recall some of the more trying times. It is obvious from reading Mr. Hutton's account of Mary's behavior why this book was criticized by some for its revelations. However, he was very flattering towards her character preceding Freddie's death. Therefore, I believe if his account was false or based on anger towards Freddie's Will, he would have painted a different picture of her throughout the entire book. A super book for those who want to know what Freddie was like and how his illness affected him and those close to him. It was written in a very warm, affectionate, and honest manner.
