I've Always Kept a Unicorn tells the story of Sandy Denny, one of the greatest British singers of her time and the first female singer-songwriter to produce a substantial and enduring body of original songs. Sandy Denny laid down the marker for folk-rock when she joined Fairport Convention in 1968, but her music went far beyond this during the seventies. After leaving Fairport she formed Fotheringay, whose influential eponymous album was released in 1970, before collaborating on a historic one-off recording with Led Zeppelin - the only other vocalist to record with Zeppelin in their entire career - and releasing four solo albums across the course of the decade. Her tragic and untimely death came in 1978.

Sandy emerged from the folk scene of the sixties - a world of larger-than-life characters such as Alex Campbell, Jackson C. Frank, Anne Briggs and Australian singer Trevor Lucas, whom she married in 1973. Their story is at the core of Sandy's later life and work, and is told with the assistance of more than sixty of her friends, fellow musicians and contemporaries, one of whom, to paraphrase McCartney on Lennon, observed that she sang like an angel but was no angel.

I've Always Kept a Unicorn: The Biography of Sandy Denny, by Mick Houghton

Review I've Always Kept a Unicorn is rich in insight from those who loved and despaired of her. While never over-embroidering the story, Houghton builds it through the intelligent and sensitive recall of everyone from Thompson to the Guardian's Richard Williams. About the Author Since the 1970s, Mick Houghton has written on music for various publications including Sounds, Time Out and, more recently, Mojo and Uncut. He worked as a PR at Warner Brothers, before setting up his own agency, Brassneck Publicity, where he's represented artists such as Echo and the Bunnymen, Julian Cope, Spiritualized, Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, and the KLF. As one of the Grammy-nominated compilers of the box set Forever Changing: The Golden Age of Elektra Records, 1963–1973, he went on to write the critically acclaimed Becoming Elektra: The True Story of Jac Holzman's Visionary Record Label, published in 2010. 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A biography worthy of The Lady, Sandy Denny By noraj1214 There was once a special moment in time, and it belonged to a young singer and composer named Sandy Denny. A once-in-a-lifetime voice, she, along with fellow contemporaries Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Judee Sill, and others, were pioneer singer-songwriters who wrote songs of great lyric and musical quality. Mick Houghton’s new biography of Sandy Denny explores her life and art.It was a creative time in the mid to late 1960’s for folk music, where traditional acoustic was still revered, yet there was electric folk on the horizon known as folk rock, in which Sandy was part of. We follow Sandy as she befriends fellow artists John Renbourn, Alex Campbell, Bert Jansch, Jackson C. Frank and Anne Briggs whose influence on Sandy’s style of singing can be heard. But Sandy Denny was not solely a folk artist. She played acoustic and electric guitar and piano as well, and her voice was strong enough to be heard above the drums, electric bass, and guitars on the rock songs. As a recording artist, she collaborated with Alex Campbell, Johnny Silvo, The Strawbs, Fairport Convention, and Fotheringay, as well as recording solo albums. From 1975 onward, be prepared for frank observations by those who knew her well, Dave Swarbrick, Linda Thompson, Richard Thompson, among others. Her own insecurities clouded her self-esteem. In her final years, she married Trevor Lucas and had a baby girl, then finally a fall down a set of stairs and resulting brain hemorrhage led to her passing at the age of 31.Mick Houghton says Sandy is primarily known for “Who Knows Where the Time Goes”, but there are many songs she wrote with powerful lyrics and melodies including “Solo”, “Late November”, and “Full Moon”. She leaves an enduring legacy as one of the finest songwriters but especially as a great singer. This is a fine biography worthy of The Lady, Sandy Denny. The next step is to listen to her voice and hear her songs. I rate this book 4 1/2 stars.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. the best biography of Sandy Denny By Philippe Aerts Quite simply, the best biography of Sandy Denny. There are 3 available books on the late British singer, and this one is the one. Well written, thoroughly researched by Mick Houghton ( who did a STELLAR job with "Becoming Elektra") this bio doesn't disappoint! The highs and lows of Sandy Denny's life were previously well documented, but this bio is just a better read. A previous book by a different author: "No More Sad Refrains" had a more sensational and downright depressing take on Sandy Denny and her late husband. I found that previous bio to be a bit tasteless, and frankly poorly written! This new 2015 bio changes all that. If you love the music of Sandy, this is the book of her life. Recommended read.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Substantial But Flawed By Deselle This Sandy Denny bio is informative and thorough in fleshing out the details of one of the great tortured artists and difficult personalities of poplar music. Interviews and first hand accounts of many of the habitués of the English 60s and 70s folk scene gives it an authority that far outstrips the circumspect musings of the extensive cannon of Denny/Fairport/Fotheringay liner note listings. Much of the tone of the book — which is ever-so-slightly fawning about her great vocal talent and at times magnetic personality — is set by these interviews and personal recollections. It manages to give a complete picture of Denny that explains all the twists and turns her career took while giving a (not exactly unvarnished) clearer picture of her own contributions to her seemingly constant troubles. While it is the most comprehensive account of Denny to date, it suffers from some flaws that range from minor to more substantial. The narrative jumps time periods frequently so that only a handful of the most knowledgeable insiders will be able to know for sure when exactly events happened and in what order; there is nothing wrong with a non-liner narrative but in this case it often gets so muddled to the point of being a distraction. It also relies too heavily on some sources that seem to say the same thing again and again in slightly different ways, or in piling on redundant commentary to make points that are minor at best; it could have used a better edit with an eye to reducing overstatement. The greatest flaw, however, seems to be that even though you follow Denny and see her throughout the book through the eyes of her contemporaries, you rarely have a sense of place or truly feel the atmosphere of what must have been quite an interesting time to live through. In other words, there is rarely a sense of immediacy or vibrancy, only one of history.

A long-kept secret revealed sends Jaela Andrews' fleeing to Macon. But if Jaela expects to find peace and quiet in the old Victorian Home in Macon, she's in for a big surprise. Handsome handyman Eric Larsen, was hired to update the old Victorian home where Jaela is staying, and nothing will stop him. Not even complaints from the cute little spitfire who is house sitting for the Carlsons. He suggests that Jaela buy a good set of ear plugs if the noise bothers her. Then there's the eccentric elderly woman next door. Madge Wilcox keeps her binoculars zoned in on the house. Was that an Indian war dance in the attic? And Madge does not buy Jaela's explanation that the Carlsons are touring Europe and allowed her to stay in their home for the summer. The elderly woman sees a crime behind every bush. Amid clamor, chaos, and confrontation with the charming but infuriating handyman, Jaela finds a lost letter. Through the letter plus encounters with those who have faced similar circumstances, will Jaela finally let go of hurt and receive God's healing for her scars? Jaela and Eric come from very different backgrounds. Jaela was born into an upper class, wealthy family while Eric has worked to help support his mother and younger siblings since he was fourteen. He's smitten with Jaela but cannot provide her with the finer things she's accustomed to. In Eric's own words, "It' like a match between a princess and a pauper." Love knows no boundaries. Though Jaela balks at first, declaring that she can "take care of herself," she is touched by the handyman's gentle, protective nature. No one has ever made her feel the way Eric does. What secret does Jaela's mother disclose? What does the hidden letter reveal about Jaela's past and where does she find it? All these questions are answered between the pages of "Beneath A Macon Moon". Follow Jaela's struggles as she finds forgiveness and discovers a special love that transcends boundaries.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Read! By AnnE. This was another book by this author that I very much enjoyed. The author tells a beautiful story of two people, Laela and Eric, as they face the things in their past that have caused so much pain and hurt and learn not only how to trust each other but also to trust God and and find a way to forgive those that have brought so much hurt in their lives. The book is a wonderful combination of love, faith and some humor that makes for a very enjoyable read. I was gifted with a copy of this book in return for a honest review, and it is a book that I definitely recommend.

Jaela Andrews finds her life busted open with lies and feels her world has been shattered. How could your parents, or who you thought were your parents keep those kind of secrets. The man you loved and adored is not your biological father. Eric Larsen has had to take on the roll of man of the house after his father decided he couldn't take it anymore and walked out on his wife and three children. Words of a child spoken in anger leave bitterness into adulthood when they can never be unsaid. Is social standing more important that people and love. You can never unring a bell, and so it is a valuable lesson about watching what you say and do before you lose your loved ones. I loved all the clichés in the story. The characters are charming and heartwarming with lots of witty dialogue. From the nosy female crime sleuth neighbor, the lonely male neighbor with a sweet tooth and handyman brothers. The valuable lessons of forgiveness, not only asking for, giving to others and especially forgiving oneself. This story has many beautiful examples of God's love, His precious Son's gift, and forgiveness. It isn't preachy, it is practical and a reminder to us all. The golden rule never goes out of style.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Novel of Forgiveness By Larry Hammersley Ms. Brooks has written another wonderfull novel of forgiveness. Jaela and her love interest, Eric, are the point of view characters. Ms. Brooks is a master at storylines with the characters needing to forgive others and forgive themselves. The reader can take these lessons to heart on how to deal with the burdens and guilts of life. Jaela is a rich girl who drives a BMW and Eric is a struggling construction worker who only has a yellow flat bed truck to drive. We are made to wonder if these two can make a go of it. There is so much especially in Jaela's background that will leave the reader wondering if she can ever get her life right spiritually and emotionally with all that has happened to her.I like the neighbors of the Carlson house where Jaela is "house sitting." A favorite line from the grumpy lady Madge Wilcox when she tastes Jaela's banana nut bread is "I've tasted worse." She continually cuts large slices for herself and small slices for Jaela. Not only is there the emotional and intense moments in this story but also lots of humor with remarks that are made between Jaela and Eric. You will enjoy the resolution of this novel as you read the way things fall into place. A highly recommended read, indeed.

Now, thanks to Selikowitz's enlightening e-book, the world will know about the time Vugar Jalilov asked me to fix a thread on his cowboy hat. And they'll also get the inside scoop on which Azerbaijani celeb ripped the elusive 'embroidered vest' on the reality show 'Horse Partners.' Now however, I am defiant, this is the best book I've read this hour! Daniel Selikowitz is a combination of George Eliot, A.M. Barnard, and Harper Lee. Wait... Michal - did you pen this masterpiece?

By Mark Tanner Despite the cover, this book IS NOT about the proper etiquette for serving pasta when dining with two couple over the age of 60 (if one couple is wearing grey sweaters and the other couple is wearing light blue collared shirts - apparently you should serve the person wearing the same color as you first). However, the book does seem to be by Daniel Selikowitz. Partial Credit.

By Whitney(Shooting Stars Reviews) Corrigan Politics begins when Corrigan realizes that Mack is in trouble. But this time it's worse than he thought. She and the rest of the supernaturals must join together to solve this crime. The problem is it will be more dangerous than anything they've ever done before, and Corrigan is bound and determined to get Mack with him now before it is too late. But he never would have expected things to happen the way they did. This book was really good! I totally loved getting to see Mack and Corrigan together! I also enjoyed getting to see the rest of the sups work together against a terrible foe. The problem though, I was really sick of Mack and extremely mad her for what she does in the end. It's a horrible cliffhanger, and I can not believe she did that. I'm seriously so angry right now! I wanted to strangle her. And I felt so badly for Corrigan. But I'm super excited to read the next book now!

For instance, Corrigan told Staines via the Voice that Mack was a Draco Wyr but then several pages later Corrigan muses to himself that he should tell Staines about Mack's true nature ... But I thought you already did that?!Or when he comes to Mack's aide after the vampire attack and she is unconscious on the ground, he shifted so he is naked but then goes to undo his cuff (of his shirt) ... Then it's mentioned again that he's naked ... How do you unbutton the cuff of a shirt you aren't wearing?!Anyway, even with the inconsistencies the book was still good. I like Corrigan and I love Mack. It's fun to read from Corrigan's POV. Just a little more editing required I think

Corrigan's side of things By dissreader I loved the series first time around and enjoyed all Corrigan's side of the story (books) thus far, but there was not much new information in this book. Read both sides of the story in order for the most enjoyment. Still a nice reminder of a fun paranormal series....

By Jimbo This is a great book for those who are new to c# and also for those who are new to programming in general. All the general principles of programming are covered as well as those things related specifically to c#. The author is a good teacher who's very good at explaining things. There are lots of exercises at the end of each chapter and these aren't the usual "type what you see" exercises that just have you mindlessly type everything exactly as you see, but give you problems you actually have to solve yourself. This is a much better way to learn in my opinion and strangely enough hard to find in other programming books. Solutions to all these exercises can however be found on the WROX website and downloaded also. The book contains 7 parts. The first part covers mostly working with the IDE and creating basic controls and the remaining parts cover the actual coding. Each chapter has a corresponding set of videos that can be found on the website. These cover what was taught in the chapter as well as adding some new things. Each set of videos contains roughly 30 minutes of content. These are really helpful to watch after studying the chapter. Like I said, the author is a great teacher and explains things in a way that a total noob can understand. This is a great book and worth every penny.

In all seriousness, a good into to C#! But it never hurts to add something easy on the eyes when you need a break from struggling through code instruction. :)
