46 of 54 people found the following review helpful. Proselytizing Catholic Dogma through Elder Scrolls By The Wizard Oz By the Nine! As a student of religious studies and a HUGE Elder Scrolls fan, I could not wait to get my hands on this book. After all, the description claims this book "engages with the world from the perspective of academic theology and religious studies." With this in mind, I was expecting an intelligent, thoughtful, objective, philosophical conversation (much like one would have at any university that matters) told through an amazing video game series. Unfortunately, I could not have been more disappointed.At the least, this book should be titled "Catholic Theology & The Elder Scrolls," though the theology certainly leans towards the more conservative side of this religion. A graduate student at the Catholic University of America, a private university in Washington D.C., the author's bias spills through the pages. When it comes to religious studies, there is no meaningful conversation to be had here, only a narrow worldview told through a shallow understanding of the Elder Scrolls series. For a game that honors a variety of cultural/religious traditions while immersing you in them--letting YOU choose YOUR path--the author cherry picks bits and pieces from Elder Scrolls lore and presents them in a way that favors and fits his understanding of Catholic theology. If you're not on board with that, you might be as doomed as the dwarves! A belief he states, though subtly, in the book.If you're looking to reenforce a Catholic worldview through bits and pieces of Elder Scrolls lore (all of which can be found online and in-game for free), you might enjoy this. If you belong to any of the other countless other religious traditions (not to mention secular perspectives) and/or were hoping for a meaningful discourse on religious studies and theology, go elsewhere. In fact, the description is so misleading, I plan to complain to Amazon. False adversing and Catholic proselytizing is all this is. This book is just that bad. Cast it to Oblivion!
21 of 24 people found the following review helpful. but I happen to enjoy reading about different theologies (I am not Catholic) so ... By Truthwarrior This book wasn't what I thought. I thought it was going to be a book about the theology of Skyrim in the sense that it would tell us about the different divinities of the Elder Scrolls (i.e. the 9 divine, the Oblivion realms, etc). I thought that would be interesting. Instead it is one of those books about how to understand theology (in this case Catholic Theology) using a common outlet (in this case Skyrim) for illustrations on concepts which might be too abstract. I might have been upset because I felt mislead..but I happen to enjoy reading about different theologies (I am not Catholic) so I will keep it.The only other problem is that the book came bent and torn and it was supposed to be new.

This book barely talks about the Elder Scrolls at all. It might make up, at best, 20% of this book and then it's just to convery his heavily biased Catholic perspect. I guess if your extremely Catholic and you feel guilty playing, this might help alleviate your guilt. But if you were looking for a book that actually discusses Elder Scrolls theology then I suggest you look elsewhere. This book is just to biased with Catholic theology and only mentions the E.S. theology to fulfill his religious perspective. While it seems there is a small crumb of open-mindedness within the pages, a speck of other mythology of our reality, and even mentions of other games, this book is completely mis titled. Again, E.S. fans looking for actual books that deal solely or at least mostly with that world, I wouldn't bother with this book. However, it does provide interesting view into a Catholics perspective on video game and other theology, if you can put up with the heavy bias and clear yet subtle abhorrence the author has for Atheists.
