6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Office 2016 Simplified By SouthGenie I seriously like this new Office 2016 Simplified guide. I’ve been using MS Office long enough to have had a long forgotten love/hate relationship with “Clippy,” that dancing office assistant from MS Word ’97 on my first computer after I finally abandoned word processors and typewriters. MS Office and Windows updates always make me feel a little disoriented, as if I’ve come to visit a place I used to live for the first time after a long absence and I know where I want to go but all the roads and sights are different and I can’t get there the way I used to. I also have that “use it or lose it” syndrome, so programs I don’t use often enough I can’t quite remember how to do what I want to do in. I love the Simplified series because they help me shake off the disorientation and help me find my way around again. This book is well written and organized, and has information for Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, and OneNote. It makes use of color tabs, bold and/or italic text, and screen shots to help you find what you need and draw your eyes to where they need to look to help you organize and use your data and complete the tasks you want to complete. The color tabs at the top help separate the chapters into sections, for example the chapters on Excel all have light purple tabs that you can look through for help with Excel. Colorful screenshots mimic what you might see on the screen while using the program, relevant text is bolded with colored buttons which pair up with matching colored pointer buttons on the screen shot so that you can read the instructions you need and immediately draw your eye over to a screen shot where you would enter the information or click. There are also notes that offer additional information or alert you to particular conditions that can happen and may want to avoid and in some places cross reference to other parts of the book.I can see why some people might feel like this book is oversimplified, but seriously I just want to do what I need to do and move on. I keep this book and The Windows 10 book handy as I work on the computer. I got a second set to keep at work and my co-workers are constantly popping over to borrow them as well. This Simplified Office 2016 book is my new go-to book for MS Office use, it’s a pleasure to use and definitely recommended.

But there are some big downsides. It's Windows only. Apple or Mac aren't even in the index. It's dry. And it's too simplified. For example, there's also no mention of 'dropbox' in the index. Only of real use if you've never used these classic software packages. So while it's fine, it greatly suffers in comparison to the many other guides that are just a click away on Amazon. Hope you find this review helpful.

By Frogsong I haven't used office in a number of years and even when I did it was only for quick and easy things that only required me to know the absolute basics. So, since I rarely used it, I didn't want to spend the money on it and used a free software instead. Now that Microsoft is offering a subscription service, I thought it would be nice to give it a try and see what the new 2016 has to offer. But since I am paying a monthly subscription, I wanted to make sure I had a good idea of all of the benefits it has to offer and in order to do that I needed to know what I was doing. For that reason, this book is perfect. It really takes you through the program in easy to follow steps so you can learn how the program works and what you can do with it. Office 2016 works well with Windows and really adds some nice features. The new subscription service allows you to basically take a tour of a fully functioning product and try it out without the huge investment. And if you don't like it, you can cancel. I very much recommend you get this book before you subscribe and, with the help of this book, make sure you're ready to spend a little time getting to know the software and all of it's new bells and whistles. Then you can better decide whether you want to continue with the monthly subscription, buy the software outright, or pass. This book is well written, well paced and very easy to use. For someone who is new to Microsoft Office, this book is a great place to start. However, if you are already familiar with Office, you might want to skip this book for a more advanced instruction book.

They are romantic without being filthy, and somewhat predictable. Valerian has always been a central and recurring character in this author's books, although he finds himself in a support role this time. Bottom line, I have read many of them, and will likely buy any other offerings by Ms. Miller.

I enjoyed them and always looked for others by her. Thisbook is the end of the series. I loved it but I am sorry there will be no more of this genre from her, as she stated in her forward.

The sun did not rise on the morning of the trial, and neither did Slava’s spirits… As younger sister to the Empress of all of Zem’ and the only one possessing her foremothers’ gifts of clairvoyance, Slava is both one of the most powerful and powerless people in the Known World. Desperate to escape the intrigue and hostility of her sister’s kremlin, Slava takes off on an expedition to the Midnight Land, the uninhabited, unmapped tundra on the Northern edge of Zem’. But as she travels North, Slava discovers that it is more than just the world of women that covets her gifts, and that fate is pushing her to become a most unlikely hero… Combining motifs from classical Russian literature with the genre of high fantasy, this book is both a gripping coming-of-age tale and a subversive exploration of gender, morality, and subjectivity.

The Midnight Land: Part One: The Flight (The Zemnian Trilogy Book 1), by E.P. Clark

Review "A bold beginning to a series that explores gender, empathy, and the frozen north."  Kirkus."A riveting saga from beginning to end, "The Midnight Land: The Flight" will leave fantasy fiction fans looking eagerly toward the next installment of this outstanding series."  Midwest Book Review."The Midnight Land- Part 1" by E.P. Clark is one awesome book that I will not soon forget, and I already can't wait to start the next one (Midnight Land part 2 - The Gift). I've read a lot of high/epic fantasy and this one really stands out in terms of originality, and I loved the Russian infusion."  Indie Book Reviewers. "an original, and ambitious fantasy, perfectly executed...in a way that really brings to light some of the embedded aspects of our own male-centric culture while peppering it with a range of strong and assertive female characters."  Manhattan Book Review. "Beautifully unique and rich in a Central European and West Asian feel that comes together with a surprising and wonder-filled world. The writing has a telling aura of worldly experience, which has lent itself to a gorgeous mix of ideas and a distinctive writing style that I quickly fell in love with. The Midnight Land is sure to do you well in its inspired, character-driven tale of wonder and outer and inner discovery." SPR. "Imagine reading Shackleton or Cook's journals, only with spirits and gods and psychic powers...[The] Midnight Land is a book of exploration, of a young woman coming to accept herself and her own abilities in life, and a fun frolic in the snow. A perfect read for a long winter's night, especially if you have too much or not enough snow."  San Francisco Book Review.

About the Author E.P. Clark starting writing fiction as soon as she deigned to learn to read, which was not particularly early—she spent a good deal of her childhood doing more important things, such as pretending to be a unicorn. Slightly later, she wanted to be a world-class equestrian. But, much to her surprise, the heavy finger of fate pointed her way and she ended up moving to Russia, which led, very circuitously, to her earning graduate degrees in Russian from Columbia University and UNC-Chapel Hill, and her current employment teaching Russian at Wake Forest University. Along the way there have been some odd travel opportunities: for example, almost being trampled by stampeding reindeer in Finnish Lapland. She continued writing fiction throughout all this, however, and has had multiple short stories published. This is her first novel, in what is shaping up to be a trilogy in seven volumes.

I am eager to read the rest of the trilogy and predict a great future for Ms By rosegarden An enchanting fantasy reminiscent of classical Russian fairy tales. I was so drawn in that I was loathe to put the books down until I had finished both volumes. The characters became so real that I felt a bond of friendship in spite of the era and fanciful nature of their lives. Having travelled extensively in Russia, I could feel the eeriness of the forests described by the author. I am eager to read the rest of the trilogy and predict a great future for Ms. Clark if she continues to produce this quality of work.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I would like to say By Shanlynn Walker First, I would like to say, I absolutely loved the story-line in this book. I would completely rate it 5 stars. It was a very intriguing story about a girl with the power of empathy and how she learns to deal with other's emotions and how they influence her own. Along the way there are also talking animals, an adventurous journey, and self discovery - lots of self discovery. It makes you wonder at the line between right and wrong, and the perception of each. It's great. There were only a few things I didn't like about the story, and although they were minor, they were cumbersome enough for me to give the book four stars and not five, like I would have were I simply rating the story-line as I said previously. First, the names are all Russian-like names and very hard to pronounce, not to mention, very long. They are also very similar, which makes it really easy to get confused if you are not very careful about which character the author is talking about. There is actually a sort of guide at the beginning of the book to show you how to say some of the names, etc., and I ended up going back to refer to it many times throughout. I really didn't like that. It was like I had to pause the story long enough to go find out how to pronounce something, so eventually I gave it up and started assigning them all nicknames so I could simply continue reading. I actually nicknamed one of the B. Coleslaw...Finally, there is a large amount of description in the book, which is awesome in a lot of it, but simply dragged in others. I know as an author myself how hard it is to immerse a reader in a fantasy world without making it boring through endless description. The main character, Slava, I felt was over-described in quite a few places, but in different ways that were saying essentially the same thing.Overall, I will say I highly recommend the book for fantasy readers. It's a great book, and honestly, I sometimes have the attention span of a fruit fly, so for others out there who enjoy more description and fleshed out tales, this is a fantastic story. Even with my short attention span and lack of interest in never-ending descriptors, I still enjoyed it, and that's saying a lot!

Clark has written a fantastic story of a young woman’s emotional growth while wrestling with what is both gift and curse—an overwhelming sense of empathy for others. Her name is Slava. As a princess within a royal court of scheming, back-biting, duplicitous family members and courtiers, she endures debilitating ambivalence as a result of both hating those scheming for their self-serving nature and having compassion for their use of such strategy to survive within a dog-eat-dog world. Her growth truly begins when she leaves that world and is thrust among common folk within a beautiful, vast, and deadly wilderness full of mysteries, magical entities, and sorcerers. I will say no more but that I highly recommend this title, and that I’m off to begin the next volume in the Midnight Land series.

Best Ebook PDF Online Christine's Kilimanjaro: My Suburban Climb Up the Mountain of Life, by Christine M. Malone

Christine's Kilimanjaro: My Suburban Climb Up the Mountain of Life began with the author writing a thank-you letter to God. Christine found herself at a crossroads in her life when she stumbled across an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show one day. There she sat transfixed before the television, not expecting that her reality in an ordinary world would ever change. She never saw it coming—that this was the day her dreams would begin to change her life forever. “For the first time, I was going to be my own tour guide up my mountain. I could take a new path, instead of the tired one I had become accustomed to. I discovered something new—something that was no longer impossible—along the way, learning as I wrote that life is going to be messy, hurtful, confusing, even magical at times. But if I don’t stop to enjoy my view in the climb, when and if I finally make it to the top, the top will be nothing more than that. The ‘top’ of a mountain!” A beautifully written story about one woman’s quest to be the change she wishes to see in this world. A spiritual awakening took place as the author wrote out snapshots of her life, standing up to her past and a few demons she really never faced until she began to write her memoir. A moving and poignant path to self-discovery about her present and what she envisions her future to become. “Please stay seated, keep all hands and arms inside the moving vehicle at all times. It’s going to be a bumpy ride, people!” That is, unless when you are reading this book you want to stand up and shout WOO-HOO with me. Face it, some rules are meant to be broken!”

She spent many years as a substitute teacher and was PTA president for six consecutive years at her children’s elementary school. In 2008 she was awarded the Jefferson Award of Excellence in Public Service, along with a nomination for The United Way’s Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award. As a nurse, today she spends her days among many unsung heroes as they wage the war against cancer. Steve doesn't do trucks. Steve doesn't do tents. And Steve doesn't do toilets without doors, or walls. When there’s a mix up at the tour company, Steve swaps the luxury Spanish trip he can't take for an African overland truck tour going through countries he’s never heard of and never wanted to visit. Steve soon realises truck travel in Africa isn't as romantic as it sounds and questions why he is sharing a small tent with a large Welshman when he could be curled up in a bed with his girlfriend, Sofia? To see Sofia again Steve only has to survive on a truck for five months, with eight other passengers and a grumpy driver, as it bounces through fifteen countries down the western coast of Africa. What could possibly go wrong? Diary of a Man Being Driven Around Africa on a Truck with Some Other People is Steve's story as he endures a five-month trip down the west coast of Africa on an overland truck. Steve records the journey as he passes through Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia and South Africa while he copes with his fellow travellers and deals with the girlfriend he left behind.

I guess the moral to this story might be: if a travel agency messes up your reservation and offers you a dirt-cheap 5-month tour through Africa, think twice before taking it.If you want a really fun read, pick this one up. It's written mostly in short, humorous snippets, although the book itself is fairly long (every one of the 157 days in Africa has its own set of snippets).Basic premise: guy trying to decide what to do with his life, and most importantly whether to commit 100% to his girlfriend, decides to go on a trip to Spain. He finds out that the travel agency has screwed up and, much to the ire of his girlfriend, decides to take the company up on its offer of a just-as-cheap 5-month tour of western Africa. On a truck. With some other people. The "other people", especially the ornery truck driver Craig, are all just as funny as the narrator (Steve) who struggles throughout the journey not only figuring out what he wants to do with his life, but grappling with a myriad of other issues. Every time the decrepit truck rumbles across a border, he's hauled in for investigating because he looks just like a wanted criminal. One truck mate constantly tries to seduce him. He's plagued with African sicknesses, a few ouchy accidents, and a lot of culture shock. This books worked for me because even though the writing is deliberately short and choppy, it's crazy-funny in places and at least amusing in the other spots. It is a bit on the long side, though (at least for my limited attention-span), and doesn't really go anywhere (except through Africa, of course) and ends rather abruptly. I had to read the book over a couple of weeks; it was always entertaining, but in small doses, I couldn't quite read it non-stop. But it is quirky and funny and will take the reader to a ton of African countries and through a myriad of wacky experiences.

I took a chance and downloaded it. Well, was I surprised - I loved it! I could hardly believe this was a self-published tome, it reeks of quality and professionalism. Great writing, characterisation, setting and plot. Steve finds himself through no fault of his own on a truck with a number of fabulously drawn characters as they embark on a five-month trawl through Africa. With temptation provided by a fellow female traveler, Steve tries to stay true to his girlfriend in London and you will need to read it if you want to know if he is successful or not. I was addicted from the start and cannot recommend this book highly enough. I will certainly be looking for other work from this author and am secretly hoping for a follow-up that will serve up more of the same. Humorous, taut and with such a wealth of interesting detail, you could hardly be anything than highly entertained! Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

This book gets its subject matter from the human dynamics that come up on a “back of the truck” tour through Africa. OK, I have been on one of these trips, albeit through the northeast rather than west, and there is a lot of reality flitting amongst the laughs here. There are maybe even a few astute cultural observations and contrasts ferreted in as well – but mainly it’s just funny. Very funny I thought.

The greatest mangal kavya in worship of the great goddessThe Chandimangal of Kavikankan Mukundaram Chakravarti is an exemplary work of epic scale that recounts the story of the Goddess Chandi’s constant battle to establish her cult among humans. Through the three books of the kavya—The Book of the Gods, The Book of the Hunter and The Book of the Merchant—we are introduced to Chandi in all her manifestations, from the benevolent to the wrathful, from Abhaya to Chamunda.Mukundaram’s captivating tales and vivid imagery bring together the enchanting world of the gods with the more challenging world of the mortals while critiquing sixteenth-century Bengali society. In his exquisite rendering of the Chandimangal, Edward Yazijian manages to capture not only the performative and humorous but also the reverent aspects of the text.

Nicholas For the first time this work, the foremost example of Middle Period Bengali literature, has been made available in English. The translation is elegant; it will be clear to those who know little about India but are interested in epic poetry. At the same time, it documents details about the social history of Bengal in the sixteenth century. The goddess Chandi is preeminent in the religion of Bengali Hindus. Every autumn, she is worshiped as the goddess Durga in hundreds of places throughout West Bengal and among Hindus in Bangladesh. There are two distinct narratives in the Chandlmangal, quite different from one another, and each exciting. The reader must imagine him or herself sitting in the evening in a Bengal village listening to these tales unfold, enacted by skillful performers before a rapt audience of largely illiterate rural people for whom the oral tradition is the only tradition.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. sometimes I enjoy a little “armchair rangering” through the eyes of one ... By Kevin C. Moses I’ve been a ranger for over 20 years, and when I’m not actually on the job, sometimes I enjoy a little “armchair rangering” through the eyes of one of my “brothers or sisters in green and gray.” Retired Michigan State Police Detective Sergeant and former U.S. Park Ranger Clif Edwards provides just such an experience through the entertaining tales he’s masterfully assembled in Paths Crossed: Protecting National Parks. Spanning fourteen seasons and three different parks—Isle Royale, Pictured Rocks, and Everglades—this third installment of the Paths Crossed series chronicles a wide variety of adventures that cover all the disciplines inherent to the ranger calling. Edwards provides equal doses of resource law enforcement, marine patrol via motorboat and paddlecraft, wilderness foot patrols, backcountry search and rescue, emergency medical responses, and wildland firefighting. Throughout each story, Edwards communicates his passion for both protecting the parks and aiding those persons who, due to a combination of bad luck, environmental and weather conditions, and poor judgement, find themselves in a tight spot. In the process, he keeps his readers turning the pages yearning for more, and in my case, inwardly chuckling at the knowledge that I’m not the only one out there dealing with such crazy, and often comical, situations. A handful of the accounts even involved close calls that Edwards himself and/or his fellow professionals dealt with firsthand, thus giving the reader a candid window to the “hazards of our chosen profession.” Edwards’ most poignant eye opener to the perils of rangering, though, comes in the form of his citing several line-of-duty deaths suffered by National Park Service rangers over the years. I personally knew two of the rangers he honors in this way, one of them as a close friend. For this reason alone, Paths Crossed was worth the read for me, and it’s earned my wholehearted endorsement, both for training purposes and an evening well-spent in front of a warm fireplace.

Tichelaar This review was first published in the June 2015 Marquette Monthly:Clif Edwards, the author of the Paths Crossed series, previously entertained and informed his readers with the first book in this series, Paths Crossed: Villains, Victims, Victors about his years as a Michigan State police trooper. Now he has written this surprising book about his second career as a protection ranger in the National Parks. Surprising, I say, because while we expect tales of crime and colorful characters from a police officer, I never expected the life of a ranger could be full of so many exciting, funny, and absurd situations.Edwards has served at three different National Parks: Isle Royale, Everglades, and Pictured Rocks, and each one had its dangers, challenges, and rewards. As a former police officer who took his ranger job very seriously, Edwards shows that serving in the national park system was not just talking to campers or even making sure people weren’t poaching. His experiences included capturing fugitives, risking his life in storms on Lake Superior, putting out forest fires, educating campers on boating safety, rescuing visitors who need to be carried out of the park, and even cleaning outhouses.Through Edwards’ stories, I learned a great deal about the National Park system and the amazing challenges that rangers face. In fact, several rangers have died in the line of duty, too often at the hands of criminals who do not take their authority seriously. The book is dedicated to one such ranger and partial proceeds from the book’s sales are going to help fund scholarships for her motherless children.Nature, of course, is one of the biggest antagonists to the park ranger, even though nature is often what the ranger is trying most to protect. But then there are the visitors who are drunks, litterbugs, or just don’t think the rules apply to them. Edwards is so devoted to his job that in some of his stories, at first, I thought he was being too much of a stickler, but as each story progressed, I realized the full weight of his job and I admired his clever tactics to protect the park. From hiding in the woods to wait for campers to light an illegal fire, to using his detective background to determine which visitor left behind a can of chili, Edwards did not simply issue fines; he protected one of our greatest treasures and he educated people on how they were threatening that treasure.Perhaps my favorite story in the book is when Edwards meets a group of Boy Scouts, one of whom brags about the giant spider he just killed in an outhouse. Edwards’ response? He took out his phone, showed a photo of the same spider to the boy, and said, “His name was Albert and he was a friend of mine. That outhouse was his home, and he fed on mosquitoes. I got to see him every time I cleaned it. I will miss him.” The point: “Leave No Trace (LNT) can be an elusive concept to grasp.”After reading this book, I have a new respect for park rangers and a new desire to visit more of the National Parks. Fellow readers will have the opportunity to take a mini-vacation through these pages that are filled with natural beauty, adventure, laughter, and wisdom. Trust me, you will never view the National Parks or a ranger’s job the same way after reading this book.
