"The harder I try, the harder I fall." I was telling a friend that sums up my relationship with God. She said "Yeah, me too." That's all of our story. This book of poetry reflects my experiences, connections, and reflections on building relationship with God. The good, the bad, and the ugly. "Let Go and Let God." We can't let God until we let go. This book describes my story of falling for balance.

All of the individual poems it contains are, simply put, beautiful. The structure of the book, which is characterized by a mixture of series of haiku and longer poems (in which Omar L. Rashed experiments with rhymes and rhythms), makes for suitable variety. This variety works well with the thematic relationship that unites the poems into a collection. My only critique of this work is that I might have enjoyed more experimentation with poetry form. However, I know that poetry, if it is to be honest, must be written according to its author's inspiration (and these poems were definitely inspired and heartfelt). Rashed also includes a helpful section of endnotes that allows the reader to understand his references to prophets and other authors, all of whom worked extensively on their spiritual lives. The whole is a sublime reading experience. Hence, I would consider this work an excellent effort from a thoughtful poet.I wholeheartedly endorse this work for anyone who struggles to maintain a relationship with God. Rashed writes with an enlightened perspective about the joyous and the frustrating aspects of experiencing the ultimate spiritual love. Rashed's book combines poems on all aspects of this love, from childlike wonder and the wisdom gained from struggle. This choice will not only allow the work to appeal to many audiences, it reveals a comprehensive understanding of what it means to love. The idea of falling, which has an array of positive and negative connotations throughout the literary tradition, was a great addition to the narrative. Rashed understands that falling in love with God is a constant process (which is both marvelous and painful). Furthermore, the concept of "balance" conjures the image of a spiritual tightrope, as the cover implies. Walking the "straight and narrow path" is a calling that seems impossible much of the time. I found that Rashed's work communicates the truth that the only way to stay on this "straight in narrow path" is to love and trust God. Loving God is hard. Trusting God is hard. Yet, this book will show readers that no one is alone on the road to spiritual illumination. The four haiku at the end of the book summarize this conclusion especially well. The end poem, "The Perfect Date," demonstrates that spiritual growth is a worthwhile endeavor that leads to the most awesome love existence has to offer.I highly recommend this book, and I am very excited to read more of Rashed's work in the future!

There is a deep deep yearning to God for God and with God in the words that occupy the poems from the authorI was particularly drawn to the poems since the Supplications from the Prophetic household, formed the backdrop to the Poems. I am familiar with the Supplications, yet I found myself thinking that if the resort to the Prayers was to prepare oneself mentally and through the heart, Poetry becomes the intoxication that yields the believer to the thresh-hold of the DivineI appreciated that despite the brevity of the work, there was much that this title covered. I havent seen any title in the English language that goes into the poetic element of the imagination (Prayer and Remembrance from al-Ghazali of Egypt, falls short of explaining or drawing inspiration from the supplication)Poetry is the language that ascends the believer from the Isra to the Miraj: a heavenly journey, knocking on Gods Throne

While I'm not a very pious person (although I have my moments), but can relate to some of the struggles that this book illustrates. One of my favorite poems was "King of Heart Pangs" and like the other commenter noted, the references help to understand the writer's background in his beliefs. I also bought his other book, Growing Up: Crisscrossing the lines. I'll write a review on that separately, after, of course, I read it.While I really enjoyed the poems, I think that short stories would be a delightful addition to Rashed's works. I love being able to envision as the plot thickens. I look forward to reading more of his stories though, and have recommended this book to my book club. Keep them coming Rashed!!! Thank you!!

It is a brave thing to send out into the world the most private and vulnerable aspects of one's self. I applaud Renata Bell for her courage. Some of the poems read like pleas, others express a sense of presence, an affirmation of the divinity that resides in each of us in each moment of our lives whether we are aware of it or not. Read as a whole, the book expresses a gentle spirit, hungry for meaning and understanding. I hope her other readers will enjoy her poems, and perhaps be encouraged by them to express their own deep longings.

THE GAMBIT WITH PERFECTIONTHE PHANTOM OF THE EARTH: BOOK TWO In the Great Commonwealth of Beimeni, a subterranean civilization in North America, expansion long ago gave way to peace and prosperity in the face of the history's most devastating plague. Immortality is the reward for service and loyalty in Beimeni, a place where the physical blends with the metaphysical and power consolidates in the hands of those with a genetic edge. The fissures first spread slowly, then swiftly, until now the Great Commonwealth finds itself on the brink of economic devastation, challenged by forces from within that know its secrets and its crimes. At the center of the conflict lie the Selendias of Piscator, founders of the resistance with an uncanny connection to the zeropoint field, and the Barão Strike Team, three researchers tasked with finding a cure to the Reassortment Strain, the plague that nearly wiped transhumankind from the Earth. Traveling from the uninhabitable but pristine surface to the habitable but inhospitable underground, this is a story about dedication to dreams, battle for survival, discovery and connection, song and celebration, undoing past misdeeds, and sacrifice for the greater good.In The Gambit with Perfection, Cornelius Selendia continues his journey to Blackeye Cavern, Supreme Scientist Damosel Rhea makes progress on Project Silkscape, and the consequences of failure during the last Jubilee confront the Barão Strike Team. Captain Broden Barão, Striker Nero Silvana, and Strategist Verena Iglehart have been recalled to the Huelel Facility for a commonwealth mission to the Vigna system. Will the Barão Strike Team succeed in the mission? Will Cornelius make it to the Cavern before the commonwealth's agents recapture him? Will Damy revive the prehistoric life vital to her survival in the commonwealth? As the season shifts from spring to summer on the Earth's surface, civilizations collide inside the planets Earth and Vigna, changing the world in unexpected ways.MORE ABOUT THE PHANTOM OF THE EARTHThe Phantom of the Earth is a thought-provoking post-apocalyptic science fiction series. It relies heavily upon synthetic biology and quantum physics.

The Gambit with Perfection (The Phantom of the Earth Book 2), by Raeden Zen

Review David Estes, Author of The Moon Dwellers -- "[THE SONG OF THE JUBILEE] is a major SciFi book. It is extremely well-written and has a compelling post-apocalyptic hook. The characters and their situations are interesting (scientist, rebel leader, etc.). The underground but highly technologically based setting is vividly described." IndieReader Official Review -- "In a post-apocalyptic world, trans-human scientists fight a deadly disease while rebels battle with the leaders of Earth's last Commonwealth. ... This is the beginning of a complicated and intricate science fiction epic. ... The characters' personalities and backgrounds are revealed bit by bit in the course of the story, naturally and believably, so that they appear as three-dimensional people with real backgrounds and understandable motivations - no cardboard heroes or villains here. THE SONG OF THE JUBILEE is a vigorous yet thorough introduction to a very promising new science fiction world."  Rowena Hoseason, Top 50 Reviewer (Amazon UK) -- "Dazzling. That's the impact of this intro to an extensive dystopian sci-fi saga. The first book in a series of five, [THE SONG OF THE JUBILEE] sets the scene and themes in a complex, carefully crafted future history. ... [It's] a relatively short book. It contains a complete story arc, but it is only the tip of the overall tale. If you find yourself intrigued by the extensive cast of characters and the unfolding multiple scenarios, then you'll want to hop straight on to the next in the series, [THE GAMBIT WITH PERFECTION]."  What readers are saying:"The Phantom of the Earth is very thought-provoking and raises questions not just about what we would do in the event of an apocalypse but how we associate today in our society.""For me, a physics major, the high point was the scientific accuracy of the many elements used to create the world under the surface, and to create the material goods and human skills that make this world habitable.""Mr. Zen has created vivid, complex characters who populate a fully realized and gorgeous world where he spins storylines that capture your imagination and attention and holds it through the entire series of books.""An epic sci-fi adventure spread across a collection of five books in this special bundle.""There is no doubt that this series is a must read for all the lovers of science fiction and I wouldn't be surprised if I see it on the big screen someday.""As an engineer, I appreciated the author's commitment to scientific accuracy. He clearly consulted scientists and engineers about the subject matter, which emphasizes biology and genetic engineering.""Above all, this impressively detailed, passionately created glimpse of a possible post-human future is sure to be regarded as a notable addition to science fiction literature.""From one plot twist to another, Raeden Zen managed to deliver a solid succession of cliffhangers and resolutions from the first book to the last.""If I had one word to describe this omnibus edition of Raeden Zen's The Phantom of the Earth series it would be: spectacular."

From the Author FROM THE EDITORIt was a pleasure to edit Raeden Zen's Phantom of the Earth Series, a subterranean post-apocalyptic that readers of hard science fiction will enjoy. As much credit as Raeden deserves for getting the science right, consulting with leading researchers in the field of synthetic biology and synthesizing information from a wealth of primary sources, what makes this series most compelling for me is the intergenerational conflict it explores. At its heart, this is a story about two families, the Selendias and the Barão-Rheas, who share a common goal of reclaiming earth's surface for humanity. But they come from factions with very different ideas about how much personal liberty the citizens of Beimeni should sacrifice to achieve this aim.  Eternal partners Broden Barão and Damosel Rhea, both scientists, work within Chancellor Masimovian's regime to defeat the plague that drove humankind underground. High achievers within a society that prizes scientific progress, they have every reason to accept the status quo, even if that means banishing underachievers to the Lower Level and sending insurgents to their deaths on the earth's surface. At the series' outset, the Barão-Rheas consider their lives forfeit to the greater cause of humanity's survival, just like anyone else.  Meanwhile, Johann Selendia, interim president of the resistance movement, strives to free his father from imprisonment and keep his underdeveloped brother from harm. The urgency behind this mission is both tactical and personal given that Johann's father, the founder of the Liberation Front, stands to reveal sensitive secrets if he cracks under interrogation. At stake are the lives of millions of members of the Liberation Front, including children, a rare sight in the commonwealth, where babies are developed into adults in a matter of days.  What I so enjoy about this series is that neither death nor banishment can extinguish the true history of the Great Commonwealth of Beimeni, which surfaces bit by bit despite the efforts of those in power to snuff it out. A five-book series is the perfect format to advance this big-canvas story, giving us first a glimpse, then a footing, and finally the full scope of the world Raeden Zen has created. From book to book, children, siblings, and compatriots take up the flag for their cause before it hits the ground. Endings are therefore beginnings, the line between good and evil blurry at best. Discovering Beimeni along with its characters is an intense ride that reaches epic heights by the series' end--an experience not to be missed. -Erin Wilcox, EditorABOUT THE EDITORThe former nonfiction editor of Drunken Boat and copyeditor for Alaska Quarterly Review, Erin Wilcox has edited some of the finest talent of our day, from literary legend Grace Paley to 2015 Pulitzer Prize winner Gregory Pardlo. From the Inside Flap Wilcox Editing Services Q&A with Author Raeden Zen Erin Wilcox: Hi, I'm Erin Wilcox and I'm here with author Raeden Zen, who is a client of mine and the author of the Phantom of the Earth series. How are you, Raeden? Raeden Zen: I'm doing well, how are you? EW: Excellent, and I'm very excited to be talking with you today about your books. Would you run down, just very quickly, what are the titles of the five books that you've written? RZ: Sure, so there are five books and the first book is The Song of the Jubilee, the second book is The Gambit with Perfection, the third book is The Synthesis and the Animus, the fourth book is The Descent into the Maelstrom, and the fifth book is The Restoration of Flaws. EW: And all told, how many pages have you written? Or words, or however you want to measure? RZ: In total it's about 415,000 words or about 1,650 pages. EW: Wow. So it's this huge big-canvas story, and there's just a whole lot of great world stuff, and there's always that question about how are we going to enter this world and find a way in. So I'm curious, and I'm sure our listeners are also curious, who is the main character that we meet first in book one? RZ: The first main character is Johann Selendia, and he is the son of the resistance leader. Initially, the conflict begins where the government has apprehended his father and Johann must act as leader of the resistance in his father's place. EW: And he is the resistance leader for what movement? What conflict is Johann engaged in? RZ: So the conflict is called the Evolutionary War and it's basically a decades-long guerilla war between the Liberation Front and the government of Atticus Masimovian. Johann's father and his mother founded the movement, although at the time of the story his mother has already been killed by the government, and his father at the start of the story has been taken captive. So Johann has to make a choice when his older brother unexpectedly arrives at his inaugural celebration, and he delivers new intel. His name is Zorian, and he lets Johann know he has new intel and schematics to the prison where he tells Johann that their father is being held. EW: Okay, so the plan is prison break--and spring Dad. Alright, very good, and where is all this happening? RZ: So it's happening inside the earth. It's really a three-dimensional setting, but the main setting is 2,500 meters deep inside the earth. That's where the main commonwealth lies, and then the rebels are sort of holed up in a shallower depth of 300 meters, but all of the story ... most of the story ... is inside the earth. EW: The rebels and the resistance leaders are one side in the Evolutionary War, and would you outline the other side? RZ: Yeah, so the main other side is the commonwealth--it's the Great Commonwealth of Beimeni. It's led by Atticus Masimovian and his wife, Isabelle Lutetia. Basically, it comes down to a vision for how to lead humanity in this sort of advanced world where everyone can live forever. If they serve the government, the government will allow them access to gene therapy that will enable them to live forever, and it's sort of a conflict between how to handle that kind of technology, how to handle immortality. The government handles it one way, where if you serve them you get it and have access to it, and the rebels don't feel that's the way the world should be run. They think everyone should have equal opportunity to basically live their lives the way they want, and that's essentially what the battle is over... Read and/or listen to the rest of the interview at wilcoxediting.com.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Complex, Taut, Engrossing Book By Patricia Smith The second book in Raeden Zen’s new post-apocalyptic series has more details and backstory than the first, but the pacing was just as swift. These are “books” with four parts and feel complete but are short enough to finish in a day. The background is complex, with humanity being forced underground by a plague that can adjust at will and is seeping underground. I think the author put in enough scientific background to bring his world alive. Overall, a fun read that I’ll be recommending to friends.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Well written By Zalewski Eric The Gambit with Perfection is the second book in The Phantom of the Earth series. It was much easier to get into this second book than the first given that I was comfortable with the characters and the world. I referred to the glossary less and found that I enjoyed the other appendixes more. So glad the author included that material! The book starts out with a debriefing about a mission across the galaxy and that becomes one of the plotlines. The other main plotline follows the character of Connor through the underground as he tries to escape the commonwealth’s pursuit. The story really picked up in part three and I found the ending and epilogue well done. Next up: The Synthesis and the Animus. I can’t wait to see what happens to Brody, Damy, Connor, and Gwen.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. You can try it. By Mohai Menur I downloaded THE GAMBIT WITH PERFECTION for free but would’ve paid for it, just like JUBILEE. This book goes deeper into the world building and characters and I found myself interested in most of the viewpoints, including Lady Isabelle (the antagonist). It was interesting to hear from the antagonist in the story and it enabled more understanding of what the rebellion and the Barao Strike Team faces as they go through the various plotlines. I’m interested in continuing the series, which is reminding me very much of DUNE. Pick it up for free and see what I mean.

Booking the Library: A Guide for Entertainers,Musicians, Speakers and Authors, by Jessica Brawner

From the Author A lot of people have asked me how this particular project came about, and what on earth it is. So, a bit of my history for you.In 2008 I and two partners started a booking agency. It was something that they had wanted to do, for a while, but they needed someone who could handle the day to day running of things (Me). This booking agency, Unbound Booking, focused on bringing small, quality acts to public venues like libraries, schools, and community centers. We had a dual mission to encourage cultural and arts education in under served communities and to ensure that our artists were being paid a fair and sustainable amount for the art, music and entertainment they produced. For six years, and through various iterations of the business I acted as a booking agent, owner and manager of this company. We grew from one act to fifty acts over the course of that time frame, and worked primarily with libraries across the United States. Our acts ranged from folk musicians, to magicians, to storytellers, to science educators, and quite a few things in-between. All of them were (are) good at what they did, and all of them were (are) extremely hard working people. In 2014, a partnership dispute caused us to close down the company. These things happen. I was not at that time in a position to start up a new agency, but I had all of this very practical knowledge of the industry at my fingertips and quite a few artists who wanted to pick my brain about how I did what I did. And thus, 'Booking the Library' was conceived! It's a slim volume, less than 100 pages all told, that gives an overview of the industry, library trends, best practices, step by step instructions on pricing your shows & contacting libraries, and sample contracts, phone scripts etc. Many of my former performers have read it over and implemented the bits and pieces that they felt they needed. On the whole I am very pleased with how it turned out, and I hope you find it both helpful and enjoyable. As always, I wish you the best in your art.

I ordered it out of curiosity, but I had low expectations, to be honest, figuring it would be a basic overview at best. I've done multimedia pop culture programs at libraries for a decade and over that time, I talked to hundreds of librarians in order to learn how library programming works behind the scenes, what libraries are looking for and how best to tailor a show to meet their needs. Well, no joke--Brawner's book gives you 95 percent of what it took me 10 years to learn the hard way. If you've never done a library program, the book will get you in the door (and probably a gig); if you're a lifer like myself, you'll still find enough new info to make it worth the 10 bucks (certainly I did).Brawner relies heavily on facts instead of opinions--always a plus--and covers all the bases, from how to find libraries and approach them, to pricing your work and negotiating a fee, to proper etiquette once you finally land a gig. Throughout, there's solid, reassuring advice (including a reminder to bathe!) and it's all thoughtfully organized. I had a few quibbles here and there; for instance, it needs a stern warning to lawyers, financial consultants, insurance brokers, psychics and others to not prey on libraries by offering to do a free program on reverse mortgages, etc. as a way to drum up business. At best, they're abusing the public's trust in the library, and at worst, putting a library at risk for litigation if a client they pick up doesn't like the results; not all library programers realize this...until it's too late. I also found the book overwhelmingly oriented towards touring musicians; that said, other sorts of performers will still be able to apply most of Brawner's advice--like the suggestion to bathe, for instance. In all, I wish I'd had "Booking The Library" when I was starting out; it would have saved me a lot of time, without question. No book will help you build a career if what you do onstage stinks, but taking Brawner's advice will at least ensure you won't screw up the offstage aspects.

She loved Renaissance festivals but knew there was no money in trying to book entertainers there. That’s when she learned about libraries…It turns out, libraries across the country are looking for entertainers. Jessica started a booking agency that booked Renaissance festival entertainers at libraries. It was extremely successful and provided a great income for these Ren Performers, until finally she decided to let the business go. Now she’s decided to write about her experiences and tips on how musicians, entertainers, speakers, and authors can make money booking profitable gigs at libraries around the country.I was fortunate enough to read a preview copy…Wow! Booking the Library was just amazing. It is packed full of quick, actionable tips on how to get booked and make money performing at libraries. The step-by-step guide and insider tips from a former library booking agent gets me excited to start booking my own gigs. I also can’t wait to share this book with my musician friends.Yes. That’s the quote I gave to Jessica after reading it. The book was totally awesome. I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone who is looking for a fun and lucrative gig throughout the U.S.

I have looked at playing music at libraries but it was always a very different booking approach compared to other places.Jessica Brawner’s book, “Booking the Library” really goes a long way to demystifying the process. The meat of the book is a quick and easy read. There are enough example emails, contracts, references, and space for notes to cover any questions you might have. She holds your hand like a guide showing you how to approach libraries step by step. She doesn’t just tell you what to do but also what to be careful of while acting professional and maintaining a solid reputation. In other words, she helps you make sure you will get booked again and again! The way the book was written, I think anyone can benefit from it from the seasoned pro to the beginner starting out. It also simply reads like a friend telling you how to book a library gig. I really like that! So to sum up, this is going to help me and I think it could help you too.

Reviews "This book is funny, moving and inspirational. I read some of it and had to get him on my radio show." Christian O'Connell, Absolute Radio Breakfast Show DJ "So honest, uninhibited, down-to-earth and readable despite the difficult subject. The best non-fiction book I have read in a very long time.....and I strongly recommend it." Peter J "Hilarious and moving in equal measures. What a brave man!" David Reuben "Adam Blain manages to be funny, poignant and inspiring describing with heart breaking honesty his journey so far, beginning with a diagnosis no one ever wants to face." RG A must-read memoir about coping with cancer Description Adam is a 44-year-old London lawyer and father of three. Completely out of the blue, and for no reason other than sheer dumb chance, he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour. Adam has endured radiotherapy and chemotherapy which were preceded by major brain surgery to remove the tumour - helpfully described by his surgeon as being the size and shape of a pear. Using the blackest of humour, this book charts Adam's journey from normality to having a disease regularly described as a “death sentence”. How will he cope with the treatment? How will his relationship with family and friends be affected? Most important of all, how will his hair come through this? Quite simply, it is the funniest book so far this year about brain cancer. Warning - this book is intended for mature audiences due to the subject matter and use of strong language.

Inspiring and inspired By Jason Gohlke As someone who has had two family members touched by the cruelly awful form of brain tumor known as glioblastoma multiforme, I thought this book was an incredible accomplishment and practically required reading for family members of glioblastoma patients. Adam Blain has a terrific sense of humor and a rare ability to communicate.

By natasha I had promised myself I wasn't going to buy any more Kindle books, but I downloaded a sample, devoured it, and couldn't resist buying the full book. It lives up to its promise - it is laugh out loud funny, full of black humour. If only positivity killed cancer cells, the author would never have to worry about his mortality again.

At times very funny with moments of great sadness when you think that the author is actually living this experience. An example to us all of how something beautiful can come out of even the most tragic of events. A good read that I would definitely recommend.

Fraternal twins Tyler and Millie have just turned thirteen years-old and they celebrate it with their two most favorite people in the world, Mom and Dad. The twins have always lived a life of love, happiness, and simplicity. That is until Dad lets them in on a secret that would turn their world upside-down. The secret he shares with his over-imaginative, borderline-psychotic daughter and not-so-bright son is that a pot fairy would visit them and leave a present under their pillows while they slept, like the tooth fairy does, but with weed instead of a quarter or a dollar. With curiosity getting the best of the twins, they stay awake in their beds that night to see the Pot Fairy. When they catch the surprised Pot Fairy in their room, they blackmail him into flying them to his secret workplace where other fairies dwell and work. While giving the curious twins the tour, he tells them about an evil, faceless being who wants to enslave all of humanity and eradicate marijuana from the Earth known as the Man. However, the twins learn that the Pot Fairy works for a secret society called the resistance that is dedicated to bringing down the Man and ensuring the freedom to everybody who smokes pot. With the approval and help from their parents, the twins join the resistance to help in the struggle. But the road to victory is blocked by a vicious, evil and ill-tempered muscular madman called the Steroid Fairy, the Man’s top assassin who will stop at nothing to kill the Pot Fairy, Mom, Dad, and the twins. Tyler & Millie Meet The Pot Fairy is filled with unusual characters and off-the-wall surprises that lead to an intense showdown between the naïve Tyler and Millie against their enemies. It’s a must read for anybody who enjoys twisted humor that only David D. Arnold himself can deliver.

It is yet a world that satirically mirrors what we generally think of as reality. It's easy to relate to the characters and situations. Haven't we all been there? Overall, an excellent commentary on life in our society today.
