Nothing to Do with Me is messy because survival is messy, and that is what this collection is: a study of fight and flight. Each poem brawls and bellows, screams and scrams, claws and clashes, struggles and ultimately survives to tell its tale. Every word is a willful act of existence. Sarah Xerta has done more than write a book; she has created a weapon in the war against the unspoken. It is not autobiographical but bio, graphic, auto ... exposures of the self as it moves through life, without filters or facades. Xerta engages us in bloody, beautiful combat and challenges us to live uncensored.

In this his fifth book of poems, Caribbean-American poet, Rene' A. Martin continues his explorations of themes both profound (the meaning of human existence) and diverting (how our seemingly intelligent species yet manages to display such absurdity). Ultimately, the poetry is an attempt to look into, discern, and explore what lies at the core of the human heart. The book begins with new poems, most written over the last four years. Subsequent poems are extracted from the previous four books, with some revision, beginning with the most recent and ending with his first publication. They appear in this order: Shoal of Time (2010); When Darkness Comes (2007); Bending The Light (2005); Seashells (2003).

Explorations: New and Revisited Poems, by Rene A. Martin

About the Author Rene' A. Martin, a professor of English at Miami-Dade College in Florida, USA, is a Caribbean-American poet who grew up in what is today known as The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Many of the poems in his earlier books are informed by his experiences growing up in and later, revisiting his island homeland. Inevitably, though, his experiences in the US, where he has lived since 1988, and in the many countries he has visited, have yielded additional material and inspiration for his poetry. Above all, his hope is that the poems in this book will delight his readers.

Hugo Williams is rightly cherished for his inimitable fusion of autobiography and irony, and a technical glide that allows his writing to 'slip back to the past as effortlessly as a dreamer' (The Times).

I Knew the Bride is Williams' eleventh collection of poems, and his first since West End Final was shortlisted for both the T. S. Eliot and Forward prizes for poetry in 2009. This new volume bears - and lays bare - those qualities that have become so characteristic of his work: his unflinching survey of his childhood and adult life alike, alighting on moments of vivacity from his upbringing in a theatrical family in the 1940s and 50s (the title poem a touching tribute to his late sister) through to the romantic peaks and pains of his adult years. Straight-talking, self-deprecating and funny, these recklessly accountable inspections are set against a Williams-esk miscellany of day-to-day backdrops that readers have come to treasure: of record collections, kitchen sinks, shopping bicycles, hotels, bedrooms. But I Knew the Bride is no mere rehearsal of old lives lived; instead it takes the author and his readers into startling new terrain in a series of brave, painful and profoundly moving poems 'From the Dialysis Ward', in which the author records his own ongoing hospital treatment with a fearless vulnerability that makes this collection of poems a courageous and inspiring read.

Poems from the Deep By MedievalMom Hugo Williams, one of the best chroniclers of human emotional spectrum, is suffering from failing kidneys and is on dialysis. These poems are written while he is struggling with the business of staying alive, and awaiting --as all his fans hope he will get one-- a kidney transplant. It is impossible not to admire deeply this man, who can lay bare so much of himself in such a few lines, be alert to his surroundings even when he suffers, and feels so deeply and let his readers feel deeply too. He does not have inhibitions, at least not when he writes, and this, in a world of political correctness and extreme self-control is just so rare and refreshing. But there is so much more than his openness. This is art at its best, accessible yet sublime, simple yet intense. This is a purchase you'd wish you had done sooner. Long live Mr. Williams!

Eliot Prize, "I Knew the Bride" by Hugo Williams is a marvelous collection of poetry. The poems in the collection are roughly divided into those that look backward and those that focus on the immediate. They are at once beautiful and provocative; 18 of the poems are grouped together as “From the Dialysis Ward.” Poets have written about dealing serious illness, but I’ve rarely seen the jagged beauty I find in these 18.This is the poetry of pain, sharp pain, sometimes met with despair and sometimes with humor, but always with the determination to get through it. Williams is suffering from kidney disease, and is on another kind of list – a list for a transplant. That’s why, perhaps, the dialysis poems also convey a sense of urgency. If I’m EarlyEvery other day I follow the routeof the Midland Railwayto where it cuts throughSt. Pancras Old Church Cemetery.I might go into the churchand heave a sigh or twobefore continuing via a gateset in the cemetery wallto the Mary Rankin Wingof St. Pancras Hispital. As a young man, Thomas Hardysupervised the removal of bodiesfrom part of the cemeteryto make way for the trains. He placed the headstonesround an ash tree sapling, now grown tall, where I stop sometimesto look at the stonescrowding around the old treelike children listening to a story. That image – the headstones crowding around “like children listening to a story” – is a kind of signature for Williams. He excels at creating images like that, images that startle and grab you by the throat until you realize how exactly right they are. Even immortality, he suggests, can change. The title poem, “I Knew the Bride,” is about his younger sister, Polly, who died from cancer in 2004. It’s a longish poem, and makes much about the idea of hair; he’s taking on his sister’s journey from childhood to death and he punctuates it with references to her hair, including the loss of it at the end of her life. But it finishes with an image that takes your breath away. The heart cries out at this, and indeed at all of the poems in this collection.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Clear and well structured By vrto As a Java developer I've been using plenty of web frameworks over recent years. Every single of them was either using JSP, or was built on the top of Servlets or at least required some configuration in deployment descriptor. Even though I felt quite productive, there have always been present these little things that kept bothering me. If you often happen to see stack traces ending somewhere in servlet classes you know what I am talking about. After some time I realized that it might be good idea to dive into the basics and try to understand the pillar stones of the specification that many frameworks utilize. So I got this book. The book is extremely well structured and the order of chapters makes perfect sense. Each chapter starts with gentle introduction to the problem, properly describes the most important use cases of the core components and ends up with fine-grained details that you might refer to in the future. Chapters have very reasonable length and provided examples are clear. With correct zoom even the Kindle version has proper formatting, which seems (unfortunately) kinda rare in tech books. The only thing that was disturbing me was that author was using fully-qualified class names in API descriptions, even for java.lang.String or java.util.List. But overall impression of the book was very good so I easily forgave author this little annoyance and focused on the content instead.

Fulfills its mission By GABRIEL VAZQUEZ PADUA Well I've read most of this book already, it has been an easy reading, the author explains things in an easy way and gives easy to folllow examples. To be able to follow the examples you must already know core java programming since the author does not goes to the explanation of java language. This is a good starting point to learn JSP/servlets though the examples could have been more practical if the author had ncluded database programming earlier in the book. But the chapter 10 which is a recap of all previous learning and applying it to a more complete application is very good. I have not read the chapters on file download/upload yet but I expect them to add practicality to the book examples.

No waste of time By PetRaf If you are new to Servlets or you just have an idea of what is and want to be guided through, first hand on how to master this web application, this is your book. Really a no waste of time at all book. It really impressed me how simple this book explain complicated things. I'm new to Servlets and a thought it will be a waste of time trying to understand this them with just one book, but the simple language and simple examples he use, was no waste of time at all. If you know how to use a browser, your in. From now on this book will be my #1 recommendation to any buddy that wants to learn Servlets & JSP. It's easy but powerful.

"What information do these data reveal?" "Is the information correct?" "How can I make the best use of the information?" The widespread use of computers and our reliance on the data generated by them have made these questions increasingly common and important. Computerized data may be in either digital or analog form and may be relevant to a wide range of applications that include medical monitoring and diagnosis, scientific research, engineering, quality control, seismology, meteorology, political and economic analysis and business and personal financial applications. The sources of the data may be databases that have been developed for specific purposes or may be of more general interest and include those that are accessible on the Internet.

In addition, the data may represent either single or multiple parameters. Examining data in its initial form is often very laborious and also makes it possible to "miss the forest for the trees" by failing to notice patterns in the data that are not readily apparent. To address these problems, this monograph describes several accurate and efficient methods for displaying, reviewing and analyzing digital and analog data. The methods may be used either singly or in various combinations to maximize the value of the data to those for whom it is relevant. None of the methods requires special devices and each can be used on common platforms such as personal computers, tablets and smart phones. Also, each of the methods can be easily employed utilizing widely available off-the-shelf software.

Using the methods does not require special expertise in computer science or technology, graphical design or statistical analysis. The usefulness and accuracy of all the described methods of data display, review and interpretation have been confirmed in multiple carefully performed studies using independent, objective endpoints. These studies and their results are described in the monograph. Because of their ease of use, accuracy and efficiency, the methods for displaying, reviewing and analyzing data described in this monograph can be highly useful to all who must work with computerized information and make decisions based upon it.

  • The reader will learn methods for easily increasing the speed and accuracy of reviewing data that are relevant to many diverse fields of endeavor
  • This will reduce the drudgery associated with reviewing the data and simultaneously improve the reliability of the interpretations that result from the review
  • This increased efficiency of review will make it easier to provide "full disclosure" of the data to all those responsible for making decisions based on any actionable information that might be contained in the data

What are the consequencesof not seeing those critical events, changes and how to choose the correct path?Without question, Dr. Warner’s years of experience and training has provided new options forimproving my performance as a Medical Device Quality professional. Further and as important, I believehis book “Optimizing the Display and Interpretation of Data” has a chance to actually improve my qualityof life by providing tools to assess and simplify the personal challenges we are all facing in today’suncertain and volatile financial markets.I highly recommend purchasing this book it can change the way you see the world.Earl Anderson, BSEET, Director of Quality & Regulatory Affairs

I am very pleased, as it is extremely helpful in this regard By Amazon Customer I purchased this book as my work involves data interpretation as it pertains to medical telemetry and electrocardiography. I am very pleased, as it is extremely helpful in this regard. Contrary to other literature assigned to my reading list, Robert Warner's book explains things clearly, in a language and format that I can understand, and that I can actually use in my day to day work. Other than that, It is a very interesting read to boot.I want to add more thoughts about this extraordinary book. It really is amazing. The author invites us to explore an assortment of proven methods to make sense out of the vast amounts of data and information that has become available to us in both our private and professional lives. The tools described here can be of huge benefit for those involved in the medical field, as well as those in predicting outcomes such as weather, earthquakes, or the stock market and such. Among several tools described, such as color coding Z scores and moving averages, the author presents something called "Stacked Frame Display". He uses the example of an on-going heart tracing (telemetry) that needs to be monitored for heart abnormalities that may be difficult to catch. The stacked frame display very ingeniously rotates the long and monotonous series of waves 90 degrees, thus causing the upright portion to face the observer. This coupled with a system of using different colors or shades can allow for easy detection of important changes that can be hard to see.Although mathematical calculations are provided for those inclined, each of the methods can be accomplished using computer spreadsheet programs, and step by step directions are included. The book ends with some useful ways to deal with false positives and negatives and such, and a very interesting conversation on the philosophy of probabilities. I found it very thought provoking, and I highly recommend the book.

The book succeeds in explaining complex concepts in very simple to understand terms which makes it a very useful book from a pra By Sceptic This book attempts to tackle the problem of how to effectively interpret and even more importantly communicate the massive amounts of information which surrounds us in any scientific field. It is written from the point of view of a clinician and medical researcher but the concepts are equally applicable to other scientific disciplines and succeeds admirably in its stated goal. I have known Dr. Warner for many years and he has the rare talent to have a bird's eye view of a field in which he is a well published researcher himself. The book succeeds in explaining complex concepts in very simple to understand terms which makes it a very useful book from a practical standpoint while still serving as a reference work for a collection.

Vignettes is a collection of poems set in the urban and suburban terrains of San Francisco and Los Angeles, California suburbs and the small towns of the San Joaquin Valley and various imaginary landscapes. Street scenes and trailer parks, doorway beds and dive bars, tech cafes. Gritty bus rides, dystopian humor, whimsey and cold-eyed observation.
