By Jam Diaz The only reason I got this book is due to my boyfriend's insistence that I should try to at least be aware of the nature of his work and make myself delve into his world of computer geekiness. I'm no tech-savvy so imagine my utmost hesitation in giving in to his precious request. But a girlfriend's got to do what she's got to do right? :) True enough, the moment I laid eyes on those symbols and numbers, I'm already doomed. LOL Everything is a blur and I had to ask his honest opinion just to be fair to this author and not give it a low rate just because it's not my cup of tea. In the words of my geek-of-a-boyfriend,"This book is a good start to learn and understand PHP and the pseudo-complexities that come with it. Though, I doubt you can learn everything in just a day, this book can provide a good and solid foundation in PHP use especially to individuals who want to make and customize their own website. The author's simplified approach makes it even easier for readers to grasp and walk through the basics. The writing is precise and very on point. I had read another programming book where the author explained JS Syntax, Operators, and Variables in a narrative form when it could have been presented in a table-form manner for easy differentiation. Also, the link for the tutorial video at the end was a great add on because theory should always be put into application for better absorption."We've agreed with a 4-star rating since I have yet to experience an "AHA!" moment with this book. I will try to re-read it again some time maybe by then words like "syntax", "bitwise operators", and whatnot will no longer be jargons to me. LOL

But having a non-programmer knowledge and no idea how program scripting works, it seems like a daunting undertaking for me. I'm in medical field! What do I know about programming and codes? I'm a computer bum myself but programming is a bit too complicated for me, it had been such a foreign concept to me...this PHP programming...with all those codes and tags. But having my interest won over anything...I took it to myself to learn, even just the basics. Why not teach myself through reading?! Books offers a great deal of knowledge if one only has the interest to read it, understand, and apply what they learned.So far, this book has been very helpful in jump starting my way towards understanding PHP. The information are presented in an easy way so that the readers can follow the steps easily. This is a good book to read for beginners like me. Helpful and easy to understand.

I have followed the author for a while on his website and he is an excellent writer, able to explain in simple English sometimes complex ideas. The quality of the book is high, the pictures wonderful. This is the second of his books that I have purchased, this was hard copy and the first was for Kindle. I found the hard copy to much more satisfying and pleasurable to read / follow as with the best will in the world the Kindle can be fiddly when jumping back and forward.

I realized last year that if I wanted to move my photography forward that I was going to have to learn about light and lighting.I've been following Neil for some time on his Tangent site. He is a master of on-camera flash not to say he isn't as masterful with strobes and constant light.My interest in lighting is using small flash off camera but I ran into circumstances that using off camera flash wasn't practical, hence the purchase of this publication.In just the few chapters I've read I see an immense improvement in photographs/portraits taken of my family so I can only imagine the improvement as I continue with the book and practicing.

Neil is an amazing teacher and his techniques outlined in this book are very clear and concise. I have learnt quiet a few tricks about my on camera flash and use it successfully in couple of weddings that I have shot.

I wouldn't say the internet is broken (yeah I know, that's not the author's point, just a catchy title) -- but ratings systems and some other things certainly are. Or more fundamentally, PEOPLE are broken. I was able to read it free (sort of) on Kindle Unlimited, but I wouldn't pay $5 for it. Maybe for all three parts...

The bias really made me want to stop reading it. But who doesn't love a good TRUE gangster story. And this book is chocked full of real gangster stories!!! Not some fictional, wanna-be-New-Jack-City-crap. So, I dived in - nose first. It was a relatively quick read. And, yes, I knew that the author was one of the co-creators of Don Diva Magazine. I have a personal preference for FEDS Magazine (it's grittier and I don't care who squealed to the feds about what illegal stuff they did with the homies - I just want the story "out of the horses mouth"), so I put my FEDS-til'-I-die pride aside, and kept reading. I'm pretty glad that I did because it was a pretty good book.Pretty good...I think it would have been a better book if the author would have stayed neutral and just presented the material. The chapter on Alpo only presented a portion of his testimony as a government informant. Why didn't they get the whole transcript? As a reader I wanted to know if there was anything else in that transcript that would support the whole anatomy of a snitch claim. Also, was it just the one case that Martinez appeared as a witness for the government that kept him in witness protection or were there others that sealed the deal? (I know there were more cases, I'm just sayin'...) If a chapter is going to be dedicated to black and latin drug lords turned informants, it could've presented more than one informant and more information that could better substantiate the "he's a snitch" claim. Did he brag around town about snitching? Just saying, as a reader I was left wanting to know more. The letter from Porter's mother, although touching was not enough to bolster the claim. Seemed like a thinly veiled character attack on Martinez, which lacked journalistic integrity. Both of those dudes where drug barons (I say barons because they were making millions as CEOs of their criminal drug organizations - not lowly street hustlers).There are three sides to every story. Readers have heard Martinez's side, the author attempts to piece together/fill in the blanks of Porter's side and we'll never know the truth. The two dudes that were there aside from Martinez are dead. The cynic in me feels that this is a convenient strategy employed by Martinez to ensure that his tale of the evening is more credible to the masses. With the target dead and the triggerman dead, who can dispute your version of the truth. If this was Martinez's strategy, the strategy was flawlessly executed. No disrespect intended (and my condolences to the deceased and their loved ones) but if you read these true stories with a strategic mindset, then you may find yourself noticing a flawlessly executed strategy and even mouthing the words "well done" while your friends are arguing, whining and crying about integrity amongst criminals in the background. But hey...that's just my opinion.At any rate, Friends, acquaintances, frenemies and confidantes kill each other all of the time in the criminal underworld. Families hate to admit that they are enablers by accepting the money, cars and gifts while turning a blind eye to the behavior and the drug dealing/kingpin career. "Snitching" is an unfortunate, but viable endgame strategy in the drug game. The object is to survive - not die. In the end those that don't die sometimes (not always) become informants. Loyalty in this sinister drug world, is to money.Aside from the "vendetta", the book was informative. Well done, Cavario. By the way, I've seen these stories re-posted on some guy's site. I had no idea that they came out of this book.

I read this book as a little girl in Germany in the late 1940's and I bought the original German version again to re-live my reading experiences as a child.Even though life on the mountain with her grandfather and the goats, surrounded by all this Swiss postcard quality beauty, sounds pretty nice and even funny at times but that does not make up for the very sad story of a small orphaned girl that gets passed on from poor relative to poorer relative until her cousin finds a way to remove her to a foreign city in a neighboring country, many miles away from what she loved. She is hired (no pay) out to a rich household run by servants to function as amusement for a paralyzed daughter of a mostly absent father. The fact that she is much younger than the patient and has not had any schooling is not considered while she is ordered to attend homeschooling 8 grades above her skill level. She is treated as a lowly servant and expected to show gratitude above all.It goes on and on until the little girl is so homesick that her health is threatened and she is shipped back home. I cried and ached for her just as I did 67 years ago when I promised myself to never let anyone abuse me or patronize me no matter how rich or important they are.Spare your kids this horrible story.

By JAF Unlucky is a great read, with interesting characters and a fast-moving plot that includes humor and suspense. I am not a poker aficionado; nevertheless, the description of the card play was clear, understandable and exciting. I am sure that an experienced poker player would enjoy it as well. The characters are absolutely believable, engaging and worthy of the reader's care, and the dialog rings true and is sometimes sparkling. I really enjoyed reading this book. I hope that there will be more in the future!

Set in England at the dawn of the poker boom, It starts out with the narrator getting involved in a game where the organizer has set the whole thing up for his own benefit. He deals every hand, "to keep the game moving," but there is no dealer button. The action starts right after the dealer and he is last to act on every street of every hand. This is such a huge advantage that it does not really matter if he is not above a bit of clumsy cheating as well, although he isn't. Those of you who have never played in private games might be astonished that people would play under such conditions.But the narrator plays and acquires a poker mentor, loses a girlfriend, gains another. The poker mentor gives him some good advice, some bad advice and their poker adventures and other adventures go beyond that original game.There is a real thread of English class relations and the narrator is on break from the U, so he isn't totally _immersed_ in the generally dingy world of London and nearby card rooms.

By Jason Sorensen This item is neither boxed nor a set. the three "books" would better be called chapters. Reads like a 3rd grader recorded the "security" discussion in the secretary's office. Editor review is nonexistent. There are no concrete examples or instructions, just vague ideas: use strong passwords (no examples or guidelines) etc.

You must read in this book By Lorence There are many people who are engaging in this now that it's nearly impossible to fully understand where a hack might come from or what it might entail. But if you read this book you should know and understand about hacking, this book is full of information.

By CoronersDisciple The first part of the book is a regurgitation of the same information you can find in any System Security book. The book has some information in it that I haven't seen in other books, but nothing you can't find on the internet--so no real secrets thus far. A lot of poor grammar usage and my copy seems to be missing pictures that are referenced as 'the picture above' or 'the picture below'. Lastly, though not a big deal and not the reason for only 2 stars, don't be fooled by the title and picture, this is one book with different sections. The first section can be skipped by most experienced security professionals--truth be told, I skipped right to the hacking.

Making Movie Magic Happen By Christina Hamlett In 1999, Steve Martin starred in Bowfinger, a comedy about an aspiring filmmaker so determined to make his first movie that he has spent his whole life accruing what he believes to be the magic amount that will make this quest a reality: $2,184. I feel the book gave me a good idea of what it's like, and what my expectations should realistically be. Some parts might seem simplistic at first, but if no one tells you these things, you have to learn them the hard way. So knowing these little tips is really helpful. It was thorough as well, covering each topic area step by step. I am currently re-reading it to ensure I am as prepared as I can be for AFM.

It strikes a chord in anyone's mind and heart. I loved the poem "Words" that pertains to the PTSD disorder, "Canine Soldier", is so unique, and the passage of time between the new recruits boarding the bus to leave all their loved ones behind with a somber, stoic, apprehensive look on their young faces. No words are spoken.The pictures are astounding. I just adored the cover. The back cover takes you into the life the author lives with pure intentions in her heart. I am partial to anyone loving dogs and other animals as Ema Lin loves them. She fosters and donates hard earned money to her local rescue. In closing, the last two pages are so interesting by giving the reader a full background on the dog rescue she fully participates in and also fully supports knowing every single penny donated goes only to the dogs and kitties, including transport with 15 stops usually traveling the east coast and Michigan!!! I get so excited about the miracles taking place within the dog rescue realm. The people you meet while in dog rescue are phenomenal!!! This book describes a special place and time. I just hated to finish the book and being forced to leave "that place."
