Making Movie Magic Happen By Christina Hamlett In 1999, Steve Martin starred in Bowfinger, a comedy about an aspiring filmmaker so determined to make his first movie that he has spent his whole life accruing what he believes to be the magic amount that will make this quest a reality: $2,184. Convinced that this princely sum - and a luckless coterie of flunkies as desperate for fame as he is - will put him among Hollywood's elite, he embarks on a wild and crazy plan to make his Chubby Rain SciFi flick on the cheap by secretly filming a paranoid action star. What could possibly go wrong? Well, plenty...and especially considering that the script was penned by someone who should have had a tighter grip on the production's purse strings: Bowfinger's own accountant. While the childlike naiveté to keep one's savings in a shoebox under the bed and the adult guile to engage in guerilla movie shoots is the stuff of hilarity in film, it's no laughing matter when you make the decision to start shopping your dream projects to movers and shakers at the American Film Market. What most people don't know about how movies get produced and distributed could easily fill a book. Fortunately author Ben Yennie was just the man to write it and to share his before, during and after strategies to make your own participation at AFM a stellar success. "The Guerilla Rep" is chock-full of insider tips about what type of badge will get you in front of industry decision-makers, where you should stay, and how to master the art of the perfect pitch. Did you know, for instance, that you should always take three projects (just in case someone says,"So what else have you got?") or that film distributors don't want to talk about new acquisitions before the last 2 or 3 days of the conference? Yennie also stresses something that I always advise my author clients before they attend a meet-and-greet with literary reps; specifically, do your homework on who's interested in what types of projects, keep a positive and focused mindset, and maintain realistic expectations. Too often in the giddy excitement of going to events that have the potential to further one's professional career, common sense falls by the wayside. Yennie wisely emphasizes that the first impression you make could likely be a lasting one; your personal appearance, your business cards, and the packaging of your material are all critical factors insofar as a prospective distributor singling you out as someone s/he wants to work with and make serious movie magic.A must-read - and humorously conversational - resource that should be on every future filmmaker's book shelf!

I feel the book gave me a good idea of what it's like, and what my expectations should realistically be. Some parts might seem simplistic at first, but if no one tells you these things, you have to learn them the hard way. So knowing these little tips is really helpful. It was thorough as well, covering each topic area step by step. I am currently re-reading it to ensure I am as prepared as I can be for AFM.

Unlike other books for industry introduction, this one is specific for AFM and it gathered a lot of author's personal experience to tell you what you should and shouldn't do before, during and after AFM!
