About the Author
Mike McQuillan is a software and database specialist who lives with his wife and daughter in the United Kingdom. Mike is a polyglot programmer who began messing around with computers in the 1980s, firstly with an Atari 800XL and then a Sinclair Spectrum. He took up databases in the 1990s, and quickly fell in love with SQL. He’s been working with SQL Server since version 7, and is a SQL Server MCSA. When he’s not tinkering with computers, Mike enjoys taking the family on walks around Cheshire with the family pups, Dolly and Bertie.

For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.This book aims to get the newcomer started in SQL Server development, how does it fare?SQL Server is one of the most popular databases in the world, so breaking into this area should be rewarding. This book is targeted at the beginner, it should also be helpful to others wanting to improve their database knowledge.Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.Chapter 1 What Is SQL Server?This chapter opens with a brief review of SQL Server’s history, from the original Sybase/Microsoft offering through to SQL Server 2014 – and the major features of each version are listed. Next, the major components of SQL Server are briefly described (e.g. database engine, SQL Agent). Business Intelligence (BI) components (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS) are briefly described – these allow the import, analysis and reporting of data.The chapter continues with a look at the various editions of SQL Server, highlighting their major features. The chapter ends with a brief overview of some useful SQL Server tools including: SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), Configuration Manager, and SQLCMD.This chapter puts SQL Server into context, its history, editions, and tools are briefly described. These traits apply to all the chapters of the book....ConclusionThis book aims to get the newcomer started in SQL Server development, and succeeds. It is mostly easy to read, with good explanations, discussions, screenshots, T-SQL code, website links, and practical step-by-step walkthroughs. Additionally, the author provides a humorous dialogue, and positive feedback, which should be especially useful for the beginner.In some parts, this book could have been clearer and simpler, with fewer tables, and less scripts changes (very repetitive). Since it is an introductory book, it would be useful to have a section on where to go next for further information (e.g. newsletters, blogs, websites).There are many excellent parts in this book, it should prove useful for the newcomer to SQL server development.
