Born in Bucharest of peasant stock, Tudor Arghezi (1880-1967) was awarded Romania's National Poetry Prize in 1946 and the State Prize for Poetry in 1956. The translators of this volume have endeavored not only to convey the spirit of the original Romanian, but to find an English equivalent for its sound. The English verse, printed facing the Romanian, conveys the distilled, metaphorical nature of a poetry that expresses a strong sense of ancestral continuity and apocalyptic visions of the world.
Originally published in 1976.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. LOST AND FOUND TREASURES OF ROMANIAN POETRY By Daniel J. McCann By far one the great miracles of post-symbolist Eastern European poetry. Sharp, ascetic, frightening and often riddled with a strange sense of despondency, these poems give new meaning to hermetic realism. Paralleling Georg Trakl, Arghezi can be vehement, beautifully obscene, political and threatening, but under control and always part of a growing pathology toward revelation through straight and honest imagery that's as much surprising as it is palpible. His biography is as interesting as his poems. No rhyming, no exaggeration-- each poem is marked by a keen and often dark sensibility...he was far beyond his time. I recommend finding this piece wherever you can. This is a fantastic translation too, perhaps the only one."SPOILT WORDSAll my words are twisted and drunk. Do you see them? They fell, got up, wanted to run and play but drink felled them again. They no longer know what they say and they're sick and laughing. My words are spoilt! They pass through swamps under tin stars looking for March gifts and they'd like to gather foolish muddled fruit from willows not yet green.Dont' pamper my words, don't let you lips speak them idly, don't let your voice sing them anyhow with fingers on a lute." --Tudor Arghezi (1880-1967)
