ALMOST THERE takes the reader on a journey of the heart, mind and body of G. William Jolley, who in the late summer and early fall of 2012, and at seventy years of age, solo hiked the Washington Section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Page by page, the reader experiences the PCT with its challenges and beauty, and is invited into an honest and vulnerable look at one man's reflections on life: relationships, influences, and meaningful moments. Beginning at the trailhead just yards north of the Columbia River Gorge, the journey covers hundreds of miles, crossing pristine creeks and rivers, trudging up switchbacks to high mountain passes, sloshing across snowfields, and meandering through lush meadows. And along the way Jolley encounters Trail Angels and other PCT hikers, while reflecting with candor, humor, and gratitude. ALMOST THERE will inspire the reader to rethink whether a person is ever too old to go into the wilderness. Indeed, "Old men and women ought to be explorers."

Would I want to?" More than that, I've wondered what it really feels like, how the individual days flow, what life is like after weeks alone on the trail. This book explained it all to me! I gained an understanding of the rhythm of the days, the mostly positive chance encounters, the challenges and scary parts, the physical discomforts, the way the mind slows down and goes deep when one is mostly alone in the beauty of the mountains. The trail is an obvious metaphor for life: some maps help, some don't, one's attitude is everything, and it is ultimately about putting one foot in front of the other with as much grace as one can muster. The author, in all his quirky humanity, is a good companion along the way..

Still on the way up By Amazon Customer The title "Almost There" got my attention right off, as it is the maddening response given to climbers like me, still on the way up, when we ask of go-getters already coming down from the summit, "How far to the top?" This new book was recommended to me as a veteran hiker and mountaineer in the Pacific Northwest, having traveled many segments of the PCT (but never the entire trail) and having summited the big peaks in Washington. Jolley has not written a trail guide; there are plenty of those. He has written a fascinating and insightful stream of stories and reflections that sprung from the places he witnessed and the people he met while hiking along the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington state. Jolley is a hiking outlier, a 70-year old among far younger women and men who take the challenge each year to experience the PCT. I continue to ponder Jolley's musings long after putting the volume back on my shelf next to "The Challenge of Rainier" (Molenaar) and "The Meaning of Wilderness" (Olson).

By Jill Meyer An interesting memoir that integrates the authors life story into his travels of the Pacific Crest Trail. He brings in his challenges he faced in his own life and with those faced on the trail throughout the book. This story makes one think of ones own journey through life, and how rewarding it can be despite the obstacles we encounter.
