At times joyful, often whimsical and always deep, Vagabondage describes Beth Spencer's year of living in a van, and what she gained and lost in the process. This is a rich but accessible verse memoir you'll dip into again and again. My favourite? 'Lost Woman Looks for Herself', about a woman who went missing from a tour bus (based on actual news). Vagabondage has the best of both worlds, the power of emotional storytelling coupled with the art of poetry. An absolute gem.

PIXI.JS Book with great Examples and Explanations By VitoshAcademy I am a blogger, writing articles for various programming languages, that I find interesting. I was provided with a paper version of the book from Apress, after a request from my site.So, let the review begin :)Pixi.JS is a rather small IT book of 200 pages, which you may read quite quickly, if you do not make the examples from the test code. However, this is an IT book, thus you should try to do the examples and even make them broader, if possible. So let's start.What is the book about? It learns you to use the Pixi.js graphic rendering engine by example. It assumes some pre-knowledge on JS, as far as the js basics are not explained in the book, but this is also not what the book is all about. It is all about making nice things with Pixi.js, and for the author the nice things are games. As he mentions, if you can make games with PIXI.js, you can probably do anything with it (which is probably true for any programming language, by the way).So, the book is really about the games. In 7 chapters, you learn how to use Pixi and some other libraries to make sprites, move and animate them, make shapes and make games. Which is pretty useful and enough to get a working game like this (the game is presented in chapter 7 of the book, see the second screenshot after the review).I would like to pay special attention to the introduction, which is really well-written (I enjoyed it) and where you learn how to set the PIXI environment. In the next chapters, the author uses simple language to explain the ideas behind PIXI. Furthermore, the provided code is full of useful comments, which help you grasp his ideas. Last but not least, the whole code is freely available online at the site of Apress.Com, so you can take a look at it and decide yourself on whether to buy the book or not. Just one note - if you download the code, do not open it with Chrome, but with Firefox. Due to some reasons, Chrome did not want to run on my PC (probably because of some security levels or simply because I did not have a server installed).I personally went deeper into PIXI and I have developed a small game with hitting boxes, with some libraries and ideas from the book. The game definitely can become better, but I enjoyed doing it and this is what matters at the end of the day! (check the first screenshot after the review).The verdict:If you are looking for a PIXI book, written in a great & easy language with examples - that's a good match! Enjoy it! :D

These trio although they have totally different personalities do compliment each other pretty well and their being mischievous is never annoying. I love the way this book is written, it is very well illustrated and it brings out the kid in every adult and makes a teen-age boy giggle and grin. Definitely a must read!

The characters are unique and funny. I almost fell off my chair on reading some of the pages. "Some" girls might feel that some of pages are a bit on the gross side, but boys will love it. What added to the fun was the attention paid to produce detailed illustrations, the authors really cared out delivering a high quality product.The only downside was that I wished the book was a bit longer, it started to wind towards its end as I started getting into it. Skittlez Bucket, please keep it coming.. My friends and I are waiting..

By Jas B Slogged through the Epidemic series and couldn't subject myself to Radioactive The "prepper" stuff was done with lists. Some really silly/ignorant stuff was referenced. Like the CDC trying to get enough antibiotics to cure ebola, a virus. The writing evoked a 14 year old breathlessly trying to stammer out a tale that seemed to have him really excited. Greg, the know-it-all prepper did some really stupid things (e.g.: bound a guy's hands in front and left him unattended, blocked off most of his lines of fire with no funneling, gives the inexperienced woman the most difficult firearm to handle while he takes the AR, only one AR?, etc.). The writing had me gritting my teeth constantly and if this had been a paperback instead of a Kindle I would probably have thrown it down and stomped on it. But, hey, ignore this review b/c the other two (as of 11/8/2015) are both rated as helpful by all the readers who gave a rating to them. So, what do I know. Except that I won't be reading anything else by this/these authors, even for free.

Greg and Veronica are perfect and complement each other well. This book gives an insight into what could happen in a country when a lethal epidemic strikes and what people will do to survive. I was rooting for Greg and Veronica! They protect themselves and those they care about. A great read!!While trying to live a civilian life, Jim gets drawn back into his military experience. His family is at stake and Jim, along with friends, puts his life on the line for them. The scenario shown in this book lets us know that there are always threats to everyone's safety. This descriptive book shows how people do what they need to in order to protect the ones they love. I enjoy this book so much that I read it twice!! A great read!!

The plot is choppy and boring. It reads like it was written by a grade school child learning the difference between metaphors and similes. Many sentences are missing verbs (at least 2 per page).

Smart, well organized and very instructive By Matthew Barnes I had this very instructional book handed to me by a fellow I work with at a fast moving start-up. Knowing that I'd been a pioneer in guerilla and web marketing, he wondered if the advice in it was worthy of following. I am not easily impressed with marketing books as many of them seem to be written by people who are looking to pat themselves on the back with congratulatory self indulgence in a field that is far more art than it is science. This book is quite a bit different. Written like a bible it offers specific and concrete advise on the steps and considerations one makes when planning and implementing a successful campaign. Much of the book covers topics that are basic but with an approach that concretely identifies the questions one should be asking to make good decisions. Chock full of diagrams, and enumerated lists, the author sought to provide a situational guide for most marketing situations and strategies employed today in modern marketing. If you are a self-starter trying to learn marketing from zero, this book will propel you forward with great wisdom and helping you find that marketing mindset. If you are a young marketer, you will find this book an invaluable guide and resource for new ideas and tactics. If, like me, you are an old hand at raising the public profile of products, services and institutions, this book will also provide you with some interesting ideas that may expand your toolbox or clarify your instincts into more articulable perspectives for your clients. By Kimberly Odom I will admit that when Naresh asked me to read his book, Fifty Shades of Marketing, I almost turned him down. Marketing?! Are you kidding me?! I immediately thought I boring, boring, boring and oh yeah, extremely boring. However, that same day I mentioned to my husband that I had gotten an email to read and review a book titled, Fifty Shades of Marketing. I told him I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it because marketing is a boring subject. He told me to read it anyway because I may be able to apply some of the tips to our own business and to my blog. So, I told Naresh that I would read and write a review about his book.I started reading Fifty Shades of Marketing on Friday night and guess what y'all? It was so good I finished it by Saturday afternoon. Naresh is a great writer and this is by far the best book I have ever read about marketing. Naresh discusses everything from direct marketing, the importance of an email list, affiliate marketing, podcasts, how to brand yourself and more. In every chapter he gives examples of how each strategy will and won't work. Strategies he's used and the results. Each chapter is engaging and exciting to read. I even laughed at some of the stories he told in the chapters.Some of the strategies in the book I will be applying to my home business and some to my blog. I feel like this book applies to all. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how whip their business into shape and dominate the competition. Naresh is a great writer and displays his intelligence and fun-loving ways in his writing.

By JD A quick light-hearted read that brought back a flood of memories from my own deer camp experiences as a youth. These ageless stories are bound to live way beyond when the statute of limitations runs out .

The excitement of an 8 year old boy comes through loud and clear as the author describes the rituals of 'The Hunt'. Each character comes to life as cousins, uncles, brothers and one patient father are described. I will have to admit that although I am not a hunter I personally know the players. Jeff's descriptions really are larger than life. The author chronicles 55 years of hunting with humor, wit and a bit of exaggeration. This memoir will provide an evening of pleasurable reading. You will pass this delightful read to all of your 'Deer Hunting' friends.

20 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding conclusion to a trilogy By Elfhelm Outstanding conclusion to Mr. Dalzelle's trilogy. Tight pacing moved the story along nicely. Our intrepid (but rebellious) captain Jackson Wolfe once again finds himself in harms way and has to make some tough decisions to fight a war with the Phage that is seemingly impossible to win. I really enjoyed this trilogy and read through this final book in one setting. I read a lot of science fiction so come across quite a few duds. This book (and trilogy in general) is not one of them. Start with the first book, though otherwise you will be totally lost.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Two Dimensional Disappointment By David Of the three books, this was my least favorite. The formula was becoming predictable (e.g. constant political double-cross, etc.). The real disappointment for me was the lack of personal relationship development between the characters - any of them! Having served in war, I know what kept me and my team going was thoughts of home, loved ones, family - all of which are lacking in this series. The bigger species extinction focus does not replace personal loss because the former is simply too big to fully conceive, while the latter hits us in the gut. No character seemed to have a personal connection outside their service duty, which is just not believable.There are a few moments when I thought Davis and the lead character were going to be together, but it never happened and there was always an extremely fleeting sense of maybe. If the lead character is supposed to represent the soul of humanity (e.g. the desire to be true to one's values, the struggle for freedom, the joy of togetherness, helping the underdog despite political machinations), he should certainly understand and possess the same need to love and be loved that we all have. Deep down it is that for which we are most willing to fight. Consider the nose art on WWII plans, or how many pilots and tank commanders keep a picture of the woman or family they love in front of them to help them stay focused in times of extreme stress. This connective element in a story makes loss seem more painful and wins more thrilling. Consider, who didn't feel for the boy when Old Yeller got shot? Or to establish closure, does any picture say victory better than the classic war-time photo of the sailor kissing the woman in Times Square? Human emotion improves a story because we can relate to those feelings and this creates one more tie to the characters and what is happening to them. This story did not have enough of that for me. I continually felt disconnected.Don't get me wrong, I am not looking for a romance novel, but I do appreciate more three dimensional character development, which would have to include a relational element beyond that of shipmate or friend, for at least some of the characters. Men may not look for all of the romance or sensuality in books that women seem to appreciate, but we do like to see the hero get the girl as the story fades out...

About the Author Technical writer Joseph Joyner has been fascinated with computers and all things having to do with technology since a very early age. After reading it I still don't know where I stand and what is devops. Is it only a suite of tools that you bundle together to automate as much as you can? Or is it more to it?Finally, the book would benefit from some editor's touch.If it wasn't less than 5$, I'd be very upset.

Fascinating subject, sloppy book By Edward Moore The subject of famous Hollywood starlets who were, in fact, deep in the closet is certainly a fascinating one--imagine the harsh, paranoid life one would have to lead, hiding one's true feelings and lying to protect one's careers while still seeking love. And I'd really love to read a well-executed, thoughtful study of this subject.This isn't it, kids.Axel Madsen's "The Sewing Circle" is, at best, a sloppy book, with plenty of rumor & opinion presented as fact & more typos than I've ever seen in any other "professionally published" book. For crying out loud, they misspelled Greta Garbo's name--at the head of the chapter dealing with her childhood!There are some interesting tidbits here--the speculation as to why Garbo ended her career when she did, the behind-the-scenes gays & lesbians who drove the creative engines of Hollywood, the sad, ultimately lonely endings that many of these women met--but the presentation is so haphazard that it's difficult to get anything useful out of it. And if every mention of Mercedes de Costa were deleted, this wouldn't be a book--it would be a pamphlet.This book sorely needed an editor, a fact-checker, a proofreader...it needed help. Had such help arrived, this might have been an interesting, trashy read. As it stands, it's just trash--recycle it & move on.

By Mr. & Mrs. X When I first came across this book, I was very excited, because I am interested in all aspects of how the various entertainment media manipulate the world and present only a selected vision of what it's really like. I looked forward to reading a detailed account of life in Hollywood and how hard it was to deal with oppression and prejudice and have to live a secret life. Instead of an inspiring, enlightening read, I got a scatter-brained, typo-laden gossip column. I can't believe, as was stated in another review, that the typos were the fault of the printer. The amount of effort put into researching and writing this book is reflected in the quality of the copy editing.It could have been worth my money. Oh well. I'm glad I bought it from the Quality Paperback Book Club and not at retail price.

Aside from the massive number of typographical errors, it was meandering, constantly bringing up new names of stars with absolutely no context, dropping them, then mentioning them again 100 pages later. A poor book that manages to make an interesting subject boring.

The abstract manner in which every poem is written immediately immerses you into those parts of yourself that we keep hidden. Reading this is like talking with an old best friend who just gets you on the deepest level. They understand your pain, your joy, and your longing. A beautifully written piece.

Evident through the words of each piece, it is both endearing and heart wrenching to unravel, as well as timeless in its ability to resonate among all those who suffered at one point or another, for one reason or another, along their journey through life. Each poem is carefully crafted to invoke emotion and bring to the surface that which connects us all: Heart. It is a very touching powerful book. I highly recommend."

Some of these poems yanked hard on my heart strings. The pain and the struggle she went through. Heartbreaking. But then to see the strength found to pull out of that. Though I'm not a tango dancer (I do other kinds of dance), I was drawn into the passionate embrace of it by Vander Schaaf's gift with words. She weaves spiritual insights in and out with passages of memoir, and describes a remarkable transformation in her body image and spiritual and relational health through being introduced to this beautiful dance form.I highly recommend Passionate Embrace for anyone who loves dance and bodily movement, anyone who is afraid of their own sensuality, or anyone who feels distant from God yet is open and curious about unique ways of approaching the Divine.

Purchasing dance shoes, chatting with friends during a party or choosing the right outfit for an evening out, turn into memorable moments. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and continued thinking about it long after I put it down. I highly recommend it to dancers and non-dancers alike.

Her first-person narrative of an intimate journey to being a body rather than just having a body kept me turning pages until I read the very last page. It is far less about Tango than it is about "dancing into the arms of God". A truly transformative read!
