First the HR woman interviewed me, then the manager, then the V.P. of public relations, then the Director of Compliance, and finally a panel of people from the whole office. I had to come in three different times for the five interviews. Little did I know that in the four years I’d be at AVD, I’d report to seven different people. This is why I can’t get anywhere in life. Well, it’s one of the many reasons. I am terrible at interviews. I am thoroughly convinced that I got this job because AVD was worse than me at interviews. They were disorganized and asked cliché questions. Them: What are your weaknesses? Me: Chocolate. Well, and men who compliment me. Them: What is your greatest strength? Me: My ability to color code things by paper clip color. Them: Why do you want this job? Me: I’ve always longed to spend 7.5 hours a day in a small, compact, gray space. Them: What would you do if your bosses both wanted you to do something at the same time, but you could only do one? Me: Learn to juggle. Them: Why do you want to be a secretary? Won’t you be bored? Me: Me? Bored? Oh no! Believe it or not, I’m giving up a life of riches and fame to take this job. That’s just how much I want to be a secretary. I got really sick of traveling the world. You can imagine how many chiropractic adjustments you need due to all the plane rides around the world. Traveling is very hard on the back, you know. And the expensive, tailored gowns! Oh and the talented, rich and handsome men ogling me at every turn was its own cross to bear. The long days with nothing to do but sit on my veranda by the ocean were growing old. It was after my butler served yet another round of appetizers that the ingenious idea occurred to me – become a secretary. It seemed like it would be a job filled with far more excitement than the one I had been living. After all, the root word of secretary is secret and it promised to be a job filled with mystery and intrigue. I always dreamed of sitting in an ergonomic chair and getting flowers on secretary’s day. As a secretary, I get to make travel arrangements, thus seeing the world from my ergonomic chair on wheels. No longer do I have to eat heavy, tempting meals. There’s no need to spend weeks in weight-loss spas or any of that. No, no, I’ll just eat Lean Cuisine on my lunch while browsing the Internet. Of course, now I’ll have to be downgraded to a mere administrative assistant so the others won’t be envious. But I will insist upon calling myself a secretary, even if it is only in secret.

By Gail A Rimkus Many of us have interesting stories to tell about our job history, and funny stories to share about our search for romance, but how many have taken the time to write a book about these true adventures? Enter Carey Robin, a talented and witty author with a flair for humor writing! She has put together a brilliant collection of humorous essays that kept me laughing from start to finish. Carey's candid and straightforward writing style drew me into her world as she searched for employment and love, and carried me along on the scenic route through her resume of employment opportunities, including a file clerk, secretary, night hotel clerk, tutor, and teacher, to name a few. There is even a chapter on what to do if you are bored at work, which had me laughing a lot! And then there are the boyfriends, most of whom have a descriptor in their names, such as Desperado, The Monk, and the Hunchback. The honesty that Carey portrays in her writing makes her completely relatable as she reflects on the men she has deemed date-worthy, and the resulting relationship disasters that followed. My favorite chapter in “Office Girl” is the one titled “Dating”, where Carey has come up with a list of personality types of the men out there in the dating pool. To quote from the book--“I’ve ranked them in order of the potential for loss of time and energy, self-esteem, as well as their ability to ruin every aspect of your life . . .” “Office Girl” is a “can’t put down” book that I plan on reading over again. I recommend this book to those who long for a peek into the reality of one woman’s quest for romance and steady, interesting, well-paying employment. And yes, the story has a happy ending!

The stories in here are hilarious and even more absurd because the author survived all these terrible, awkward jobs. I know I have been there, too. If you want a funny perspective on a situation so many of us lived through: this is the book for you! Not to mention all her great stories of the mess that is dating in our culture. My favorite part is the extensive list of possible male personalities you will run into, complete with their potential for loss of time, energy, self esteem and possibility of ruining every aspect of your life. These are perfect for any woman trying to navigate the perilous waters of on-line dating.This is another great book from Carey RavenStar Robin. I expect she will write many more that will blow us away!
0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. comedy for stuck Millenials By Old World Social Worker Though written by a Generation X-er, I think may Millennials will relate to this authors story. Themes of being stuck in minimum wage/low wage jobs with advancement unlikely, seeing bizarre corporate politics and workplace rules undermine an enjoyable career, coworkers and bosses being zombies inside and outside work, realizing mom and dad taught one little about adult life and careers, etc. Some things just never seem to change in the corporate/office culture for women, entry level workers and para-professionals. This both demonstrates how this can be both tragic and hilarious. I would recommend this for any Millennial niece, daughter, granddaughter, neighbor whom is frustrated with her office job and needs some comic relief and validation.
