From School Library Journal Grade 6-8-A welcome find for young actors in search of material for auditions. Drawn from Surface's own plays, the selections are predominantly contemporary slices of life, but there are a few pieces based on figures from history and folklore. The monologues take 1 minute or less in length; the scenes for 2-to-4 actors run 3-to-10 minutes, and those for groups, 7-to-20 minutes. The roles are geared specifically to performers ages 10 to 14, feature different ethnic backgrounds, and are gender balanced. Characters struggle with school, parents, and friends-situations with which students of this age can easily identify. Adolescent angst is very much in evidence, and characters frequently vacillate between the emotional peaks and valleys that mark relationships at this age. While this is in keeping with the middle-school personality, occasionally the changes seem somewhat exaggerated. Also, the treatment of a few themes is a bit hackneyed, such as those in the monologues of a girl who wants to find a boyfriend, and another who is embarrassed by her alcoholic mother. In the introduction, Surface writes, "Too many monologues are story-driven, in past tense, and overly narrative." She succeeds well in avoiding those pitfalls and offers middle-graders a fine collection of emotionally charged scenes with characters who explore the issues that matter to this age group in language that will ring true. By Eric Shank Van Eenige Oh, the scenes in this book are actable and entertaining, and will surely inspire students to put forth creative performances. But there is only ONE two-person scene for two males, and EIGHT for two females. Difficult to use this book in a classroom setting if it is your only source for scenes.

I really enjoyed acting them out with my friends and they inspired some ideas for my own plays. This is deffinatelly a great book for teenage actors and actresses.

These pieces aren't perfect but they do their job: provide a young person with material where they can make choices and transitions, and be honest in dramatic situations. I'm working with my daughter on one of the monologues in this book for a middle school audition. At first, the 45 second piece seemed straightforward, but in breaking it down we've been able to find plenty of dimensions. I recommend this book.

Good intro and beginner’s guide to my favorite puzzle By Eric Sedensky This is not a book I would normally have read or even looked into if I had not received a free electronic version from the author, however, once I started reading, I was curious and interested enough to read the book from start to finish. I have been doing Sudoku puzzles for close to thirty years, having first discovered them when I lived in Japan in the late 1980’s when these puzzles first took off. As such, I did not need anyone to explain to me how to solve them, but I am always looking for some clues or insight into how to solve these puzzles more efficiently, so I agreed to read the book.So first, let me explain what this book is not. It’s not a book of Sudoku. There are only a few practice puzzles, and they are not particularly difficult at that. Also, this is not a mathematical treatise or a scholarly analysis of the puzzle and possible solving methods. All this book really is, is a simple, clear, basic beginner’s approach to solving Sudoku puzzles. It provides a careful explanation of the rules and how those rules dictate how you solve the puzzle. It also provides some terminology for discussing the puzzle and solving methodologies, hopefully with a mind to providing a structure for thinking about how to solve the puzzles. Then, it provides a walk-through of a couple of different solving methods. It’s logical, well organized, clear, and practical.If you are new to Sudoku or one of those people who just doesn't “get” Sudoku, this will be a great book for you. It won’t make you an expert, but after reading through this book, anyone should then be able to solve some beginner to moderate level puzzles. If you are already a regular Sudoku-er and have tackled more than a few “deadly”, “evil”, or “diabolical” puzzles, this book will not tell you anything you don’t already know. In fact, although the author basically takes two approaches, in my own mind, they are both essentially the same thing. The only difference is that one of them relies on a more graphic representation of how to go about solving the puzzles, which sort of gives that method a different flavor. Unfortunately, that solving method is also not realistic, as it requires filling the boxes with potential numbers and erasing (I presume) as you go along. (I do the puzzles in pen with my non-dominant (left) hand, to make my brain work harder, so erasing is not an option. )If you've never caught the Sudoku bug but have always felt like you were missing out, this book may be ideal to bring you into the Sudoku solvers’ world. If you are already doing Sudoku puzzles on a regular basis, you may find this book helpful for fine tuning your solving strategy, or you may find it a little too basic. That’s why I can’t quite give it five stars, but it’s useful enough and good enough to rate a solid four.

Well-Written, Good Explanations, Clear Illustrations By Bassocantor In THE SUDOKU METHOD, Sherlock Houdini illustrates the main tactics for tackling typical Sukoku puzzles. He starts with simple tactics, using "crosshatching" methods. From there, he shows the reader how to use "candidates" to solve tougher puzzles, using tactics such as "Naked" or "Hidden" pairs or triples.**BIG PLUS**+ The author writes very clearly and succinctly. One of the better writers I have read.+ The illustrations that depict the various tactics are similarly laid out very well: clear font, clear explanations.+ The graphics are crisp and clear.The only gripe I have with this book (and reason for 4 Stars), is that I don't really think the book truly covers "Advanced" topics. The tactics covered are mostly pretty basic, ranging up to intermediate. If the book were titled, "Beginner to Intermediate" I think it would be more accurate. After all, if Volume 1 covers "Advanced," what's left for the next volume--super-dooper advanced?In any case, I really enjoyed this book. Mr Houdini knows how to write well, and how to explain complicated topics. With those "flow chart" diagrams, I bet the author is a software engineer--right?Now that I've had a taste of these tactics, I hope the author produces a book with the more advanced topics. Not just a primer for the newbie but an education in how to play for even the experienced. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of HUD's, tracking programs, etc. without knowing how to properly utilize these in game play. Opponents are using these methods against you so you need to be versed in how best to utilize the available resources. I have bought Alton's materials for the last three months and have learned more in that time period than I did the prior two years. I had my mind muddled with so many concepts that I could not just sit down and play cohesively. Alton has brought all of the elements of poker together for me making my play flow rather than have knee-jerk reactions. I am enjoying playing much more. His video series that is a companion to this book is excellent. Go to [...] for the video course - Alton does extensive live play and hand replay lessons that are invaluable to bringing together the implementation of his teachings. ALL of his video courses are just outstanding. I am VERY judicious with my time and training budget and Alton's courses and books are the BEST poker investment I have found.

Hoc Phan is a technologist with a lot of experience in frontend development. He started programming at the age of 12 with Pascal and Assembly on a 486 computer. A great book to learn how to make mobile apps if you know Javascript By TheReviewGuy Ionic Cookbook is a great book for anyone learning to develop mobile applications using Ionic. The book assumes you are familiar with Javascript and CSS but does a good job of filling in the gaps for Angular, Ionic, and various tools you will use in creating your applications. This was one of the best parts of the book as learning a new technology often requires a lot of supporting technology and tools which most books and online resources leave as an exercise for the reader to learn on their own (or know before they start using the new technology). Since I’d done some basic Javascript work with webapps before this was all I really needed; the book covered the rest. This was particularly helpful for things that are not directly part of Ionic (such as configuring your code editor for writing ionic and which plugins to install (as well as how to do so). He also covers the other parts of the tool chain (node.JS for instance) and offers options so that you can use tools you may already be familiar with (Visual Studio, Android Studio, or Xcode).When it comes to the examples, Hoc has taken a methodical approach to starting with basic examples from online repositories to get the reader started quickly. These then expand through increasingly complex examples that help the reader understand more concepts (data-binding, use of mobile backend services (firebase) and 3rd party API providers like Facebook.The book also does a nice job of talking about one of Ionic’s best features; the way it makes webapps look “native” on their given platforms. The book also covers the use of Cordova (the underlying technology for Ionic to build and package apps for use in the various device app stores). The book takes you through examples like accessing the camera from your application (this is one of the great parts of Cordova but one of the things that many times get left out of some technical books as it is a feature set of a technology that is used as opposed to part of the Ionic framework itself).In all, this is a great book for people looking to learn the Ionic framework and who might not necessarily have knowledge of the tools they might need to go from being a web developer to being a mobile app developer. I’m grateful to Hoc and his publisher for sending me a copy of the book to review, it was extremely helpful for me in learning to write projects in Ionic.

There is a chapter talking about binding with scroll event to do interesting thing like progress tracking. That is something I haven't seen anywhere. Also the Linkedin authentication is quite new. I am glad I learnt that because the usage of Auth0 is definitely creative here. Most importantly this book gave me lots of information on building and pushing the app to physical iOS device. I am an Android person so knowing this is super useful. Highly recommended!!

By ray@camdenfamily.com I'm copying in a review from my blog, so pardon any oddities:I’ve mentioned now multiple times that I’m a huge fan of “cookbook” style technical books. After I’ve learned the basics of a language, I love to see real, if small, examples of applications built in a language so I can get a feel for what it’s like to actually develop with a particular platform. I was happy to get a review copy of what I believe is the first such book for the Ionic framework, Hoc Phan’s “Ionic Cookbook.”It has over 250 pages of recipes covering a huge range of topics, demonstrating everything from different UI components of the Ionic framework to handling data storage for proper offline support. To be honest, much of what is covered in this book would be incredibly useful outside of Ionic as well. For example, the discussions on Firebase would be useful in a vanilla Cordova application.Typically a “cookbook” style book assumes you know the platform already, but this book spends time at the beginning introducing you to the basics of Ionic as well, so it would actually help someone who is new to Ionic as well. (Although I’d try to have some basic Cordova knowledge first.) At the end, Hoc even discusses how to publish your apps to the app stores, which is yet again a topic that will be useful to folks using Ionic or some other UI/UX platform.While reading, I did find a few things I thought were done wrong, but honestly, those were more “I’d do it this way” type things than real disagreements. Even better, I learned a few things as well. I definitely recommend picking it up!

Recently came across “Philia and Sophia”, one of those delightful treasures in an underrated genre. Through this book, Poetess Nikitha Hingad seeks to entwine two rather incongruous concepts, one of “love” an irrational abstract to “wisdom” which deals with practicality. And she does so beautifully and surprises and indeed bewitches at every turn.Philia is playful, coquettish and even silly, the artlessness of some of the works making them even more charming. “I need you”, “Engaged”, “Intense love” and “How can I” are some poems that strike. But the two haikus and one quadruplet are the real treats.Sophia takes on a more sombre note. “I walk alone”, “Home sweet home”, “Formless”, “Surrender” and “Life” are noticeable works. The last Haiku, ‘My plants are drooping, seeking my care, my affection, weary of waiting’ says a lot in three lines.While the book is simple worded, a few works are naïve and need polish. “The Incomplete” spells out the essence of the book when it says ‘some gems are crude and unpolished’.

It was fun to read and there are a lot of compilation poems about love and wisdom to choose from.This book is very useful and helpful to people who are having a hard time expressing their emotions to someone they love or like. You would definitely learn a lot of tips along the way as well if you read the book.

Would strongly suggest author to re-read work, find the errors and re-submit. I for the life of me could not put this book down. There was a twist at the turn of every page and at multiple time through out reading, I forgot I was even reading! I felt like I was there with him in person going through the stages of his life. I felt like I could relate with SOME of his emotions and situations being from Los Angeles and in the military. The way the system worked and his attitude toward everything astounded me. It seemed like a never ending struggle. Anyway! Get this book, read it, and prepare for the ride of your life!

To leave that life behind is difficult and mad props to Kali for staying and living positive. Kali didn't graduate an ivy league university as English major, so there are all kinds of grammar and spelling errors In this book. He arose out of the unforgiving streets of Oakland and the way the book is written is raw and real.

Inspiring By Brandie I thought this book was repetitive at first but I kept reading wondering if he was ever going to get tired of all the crazy ways! I'm glad I didn't put it down and stop reading it ended up being a great book. I have seen people make it out of the ghetto with absolutely no criminal record and I've also sadly had friends who caught life sentences at 15-16 years old. I did not grow up in the ghetto but I have unfortunately seen my brother do a few years in prison it definitely makes me so humble. Definitely a must read! Makes me that more sure about my career path that I have chosen to study for!

Excellent survey of the field for those just starting out in it By Michael Brochstein About 90% of this book is composed of verbatim interviews with various professionals (mostly photographers but also people in related fields). Whether Mark Jenkinson is an excellent interviewer or just an excellent editor of these same interviews doesn’t matter as the end result are very very readable and worthwhile interviews that cover a wide range of topics.The author could have written this book not as verbatim interviews but as summaries of these interviews but I think it works better this way as we get a better sense of the real people that he has interviewed. Without the verbatim interviews it might have been more generalities and less real specific people that tell real-life stories. The author also interjects with a substantial amount of his own thoughts to give context to these interviews and to note his own experiences and observations.The author has a unique perch as a long time teacher of photography at NYU and as an active and successful practicing professional who has done a wide range of professional work. This has given him a place to watch many people go from students to professionals and to track their careers. The author obviously has an impressive “Roledex” of people he has met as a teacher or working professional in which to call on for these interviews.One gets a good survey of the main topic of this book (“Finding your true path”) from all these interviews and the authors introductions and observations.The following is not a criticism but simply a couple of suggestions if there ever is a second edition of this book;The author interviews one wedding shooter but the one he picks is not IMO representative of most wedding shooters. The one he interviews is at one end (the very high end) of a spectrum. I would suggest adding an interview with a more average wedding shooter. Interviewing someone whose main business is events (corporate / lifecycle) in general might also be a good addition. I would also recommend the next edition include a couple of portrait / headshot specialists.The book seems geared for someone graduating with a degree in photography and trying to figure out a career path. This book IMO is excellent for that group of people. Given that the author has spent many years teaching photography at a university this makes sense. My recommended additions for the next edition of this book are probably not what most photography students are aiming at whereas the interviewees in this book are in the realm of what photography students might indeed be aiming at or considering.FWIW, In addition to this book, I also recommend another book What They Didn't Teach You In Photo School: The secrets of the trade that will make you a success in the industry that should interest those who find this book's topic interesting.Bottom line, I highly recommend this book!

Highly Recommended By Nicholas Calcott Photography Careers is a great addition to the few books concerning professional development for photographers and is aimed at a group that could most use the advice: Recent graduates.In addition to it's target group, it should be very useful for anyone considering a career in photography. It's filled with interviews with photographers and photo professionals of many different disciplines, providing an overview of different parts of an industry that is quiet varied but is often lumped together as one large, amorphous whole. Particularly useful are the interviews with artist Hank Willis-Thomas (who discusses how necessary having some measure of both realism and delusion are for a career) and accountants Richard and Evan Glass (who talk about the kind of financial planning needed to sustain a long and varied career).The bulk of the book is the long interview section, but there's also a couple sections aimed at providing some advice to actually getting started. These sections cover some basic business concepts (managing your money, networking, contracts, negotiating, etc etc) as well as some more specific aspects to this industry (copyright, pitching stories, assisting, etc). All in all, it should provide a variety of good answers to the question "What do I do with a photo degree, anyways?"

The british author's dry sense of humor was just senseless, long-winded & unnecessary, adding nothing to this morbid true story.Usually at 90-95% hit rate with what I purchase on Amazon in terms of good selections but this one was a clear miss. My only salvation was that I was able to re-sell it for more then I paid for it.

By Amazon Customer You get halfway through the book with shoddy detail at best (like, the author claims someone appeared in court on April 31st, which doesn't even exist), and then suddenly you're subjected to pages and pages of the judge's sentencing statement....which only serves to regurgitate everything you just read. THEN, the author puts in multiple fluff chapters about female serial killers and British law that are only barely related to this case. Poorly-researched and poorly-written, with the added bonus of occasional self-serving commentary.
