A Remarkable Biography About a Remarkable Actress By Lon Davis Show business biographies can be terribly superficial since actors and actresses are conditioned to keep up their public images long after their careers have faded. Jeff Gordon conducted innumerable phone interviews with retired actress Lynn Bari and found a subject who was anything but protective of her formerly glamourous image as a movie queen. Ms. Bari was, in fact, brutally honest about her alcoholic mother, her exploitative husbands, her directors, and her co-stars. She was also incredibly honest about herself. These revelations--artfully inserted into Mr. Gordon's well-written narrative--provide the foundation for one of the most seering biographies I have ever read. And, believe me, I've read hundreds of them.

The author's encyclopedic knowledge of Hollywood's heyday adds to the truly sympathetic view of this human and appealing star. Anyone interested in the inside world of the great old movies would enjoy this book.

Lynn Bari died 20 years ago but the author established a friendship and recorded many conversations with her towards the end of her life. Bari had a sharp mind with excellent recall, in spite of being a reformed alcoholic and suffering heart attacks and other illnesses in her last decade. Gordon has told her story, interpolating quotes from the star herself, typed in bold so they are easy to find and read. At the same time, he has many quotes from her beloved sister-in-law and son which provide authenticity to the text. Many of her contemporaries such as Claire Trevor, Anthony Quinn and Cesar Romero, all of whom have passed away now, are quoted.Bari worked her way up from extra work into supporting and eventually starring roles. Much to her displeasure, she was one of a few actresses named "Queen of the Bs" but her career encompassed some famous A films, lots of TV and some very successful stage appearances long after her film career had faded. Along the way, there were 3 traumatic marriages and there is plenty of detail about the evolution of 20th Century Fox to which Bari was contracted for 14 years. Also, Gordon has avoided endless detail of the synopses of her films and this is a great relief. This is a brilliant biography, cleverly balancing Bari's personal life with her performing life and bringing her personality to life with lots of first hand detail. The text is literate and easy to read. There are also lots of photos all reproduced excellently. The only question is why has it taken so long to appear after the star's demise.
