With nowhere left to run—where will you go? Most of the world’s population is either dead or dying from a virus that looks a lot like the one Bree and Nate tried to destroy—and not all of them remain dead. Chased by hordes of zombies, they flee the city with what remains of their merry band of miscreants. But even when most of them survive the first day, they are far from safe—because there is no safe place left. The fight for survival forces them to become resourceful, and soon they realize that the undead might not be their only problem. In this new world, it’s each man or woman out for themselves—and just because someone has a pulse doesn’t necessarily mean they make a good ally. Yet there is hope—a bunker in Wyoming, outfitted with weapons and food, and above all else, defensible shelter for the winter. Can they survive the two-thousand-miles trip across the country with nothing but the clothes on their back and what they can scavenge along they way? This is not the kind of challenge that Bree ever imagined she would have to face, but she’s determined to survive—even if that means to learn how to on the job. Books in the series (so far): #1: Incubation #2: Outbreak #3: Escalation #4: Extinction

By Rawrr Bree becomes a budding soldier as she and the gang begin a grueling trek to Wyoming amid the zombie apocalypse. Along the way they pick up a fun character to hate, kill lots of zombies, and dodge the usual sickos that tend to emerge in bad times. This book reads more like a typical post-apocalyptic zombie book than the first book (which i liked) with all the usual pitfalls but the author still managed to keep it interesting. Some of the other characters actually gain names and personalities so the characterization is slightly better but Nate is still too unemotional and flat at times (like to the point where he seems very one dimensional). I get that he's supposed to be the tough love kind of guy and he doesn't want to "sugar coat" things for Bree but sometimes he just comes across as way too egotistical and condescending and I can't help but despise Bree for liking him and letting him treat her the way he does (she always just accepts his criticism as fact and he's ALWAYS right according to her). There WERE some good moments in there where Nate managed to show another side and had a little more dimension but as it is, it never lasts and most of the time he just comes off as a smug a-hole, which i find really off-putting (in fact, I've been trying to read the 3rd book but it seems like he's become even more egotistical and condescending in that one). I always get the feeling he wouldn't care much if Bree died. And can i just say wtf is up with the way everyone made fun of Bree for having a period? Seriously? These people are supposed to be over 30! Usually by the age of at least 25 a guy no longer snickers or freaks out about crap like this (usually by then they've had a girlfriend or you know, become familiar enough with females to realize periods happen). And okay, major SPOILER alert here but i have to say, I was really put off by the whole beating scene... It seemed like it came out of nowhere (i mean i get why but didn't find it believable), was pretty out of character, and didn't really make sense. This isn't Outlander and Bree didn't go running off in an attempted escape; she made a mistake that turned into a cluster**** but she took full responsibility afterwards (bad enough she lost her dignity while doing it). Of course then she does a complete 180 and is all "hey guys, it's no big deal cause no one died, right?" which is TOTALLY out of character for her (she's not that clueless) but i guess the author really wanted to write in this scene. Having everyone beat her in a bizarre hazing ritual was just OTT and ridiculous. A total waste of resources, too. It serves no purpose to beat your team members when you're living in 3rd world conditions with no access to proper medical care (all it would take is a spleen rupture and she'd bleed out internally). And then afterwards we have Nate admitting that he knows she'd just do it all over again anyways? I think the worst part about all of this is that Bree seems to agree and accept that she deserved to get beaten! For trying to do what she believed (and apparently still believes) was right at the time. Ugh.

By janosch73 I was very happy when book two in the Green Fields series was published so quickly after the first one as I couldn't wait to get on with the story and to find out what had caused the apocalypse. I liked the character development of Bree a great deal; how she is able to justice her place in the group of soldiers as a former labrat and how she is treated just like one of the guys. She faces even some of the funny realilties of the life after the apocalypse that still show how she's a human being and a woman! Those moments and the more courageous, snappy bickering with the guys created some great, funny moments in the book. In addition to the fun there were some action-packed events and the long, long walk ahead to possible safety. Some successes to Bree and some failures as well which show that her character development is not complete yet.In book 2 we get some questions from book 1 answered, or do we? I don't want to write any spoilers here, but I do believe that Adrienne has not told us the entire truth of the story in this book. There are more revelations to come for sure and I can't to read more. I already have my favourite guys in the story, I can't figure out why Nate is so special or what his backstory is really? And the ultimate question, are they really going to make it, which is still completely open. I bet that book 3 doesn't give me the answer to the ultimate question either, but more adventures and challenges for this great bunch of survivors whose journey I want to follow to the end.

Problem hi's when the dialog between characters starts. Makes absolutely no sense what is coming out of their mouths. And there is a lot of aggression that makes little sense as well. The inner monologue of the main character Bree is really good--exceptionally good--- but then when she actually speaks...s***e ensues. But she's not the only one. Everyone is just really snotty for no reason. And the Nate busts out in this log sermons that is...well, I have no clue...but it's worth reading, no doubt.
