I had put off learning tableau and thought that i wouldn't be able to find a decent guide to teach me enough to be able to use the software - but not too much that it would take an eternity to get through! This book sets the stage for you to come up to speed and then proceed to take your skills to the next level.I have more of a database background but this manual helped me understand how to use this cutting edge software. It seems that there are endless topics that could be covered in Tableau, but this book really brings you up to speed and is stepped out extremely well.

Good addition to your library; don't make it your only Tableau book By Geoff Lilley Disclosures:I grew up on Excel (20 years, certified, use it 8 hours a day, including charts, PivotTables, and macros)I'm self-taught on Tableau, which left me with a lot of knowledge gapsJane was kind enough to send me a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review, which this truly is.Pros:The language is conversational, and easy to follow.The screenshots are clear and easy to read.The book is well-organized.The definition of the Tableau-specific terms like shelf and pill were succinct, and did a good job drawing on real-life examples.I thought the section on mapping/geography was especially well-written, and clarified a mystery for me. (Long story, but let's just say that Tableau may not know that a certain field in your data set is in fact a city, or a state/region.)In my professional environment (Dignity Healthcare), I am required to use our company's branded colors, so having a quick-and-dirty guide on how to customize the Tableau palette.Cons:I would be grateful if I could have access to the data files.I couldn't wrap my head around the idea of *pasting* a data set into Tableau, as opposed to accessing a physical file or server. That struck me as kind of odd.Nit Picky Stuff(Disclaimer: I am a hack technical writer, mostly writing my own class materials for Excel classes. So I have some pretty specific biases. Please treat the following statements as reflection of my personal preferences.)As someone who was raised on the Microsoft Manual of Style, I'm used to seeing a button's name in bold, and if I'm to enter text, it's in courier font. The use of single and double quotes felt inconsistent to me, and I couldn't see a clear pattern to their usage.Many of the figures had "WORKED EXAMPLE" as part of the title, and I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of that text was.The even-page headers all said the author's name, and the odd-page headers were the title of the book. I would have appreciated having the chapter name in the even page headings, and maybe the sub-heading in the odd page headings.One of the other reviewers made mention of the abundant whitespace. Rather than make a blanket pronouncement, I'd rather split the difference:On pages 30 and 31, there's a pretty good chunk of space at the bottom which doesn't add any value.On pages 32 and 33, I can make a better case for the space - it shows a screenshot, illustrating a particular process.In Summary:I believe that with a program this complex and powerful, you'd be well-served to own more than one book. I happen to own this one, Tableau for Healthcare, and Tableau 9: The Official Guide. Your mileage may vary.

Mandle With a data visualization tool as easy to use as Tableau, it's easy to trick oneself into thinking you've read through everything you need to already in order to be successful with the application. Take the harder route and read up on it as much as possible. Those who do will want to include this book in their library. Although the title might mislead some users to expect Business Cases and Tableau solutions between the covers, it's the latter they'll walk away with after they've finished the book. Thanks to Jane A Crofts, I finally have a clear understanding of what I've been struggling with while data blending. The customization tips Ms. Crofts offers for date formats and brand colors have also eluded me in countless Google searches for All Things Tableau. Thank you Tableau for a great tool and thank you Ms. Crofts for your approach to its use.
