When Erin Passons, an Austin-based author and technical writer, is laid off from her software company, she immediately jumps into the “get-hired” scene, interviewing at over thirty companies, many of which are touted as “Austin’s Best Places to Work.” Passons tries to keep a (mostly) positive attitude and a (generally-speaking) hopeful heart, but a dozen ping-pong tables and a few thousand mentions of the word “culture” later (and no one born before 1985 in sight), it’s all too clear the hiring practices at Austin’s software companies are as weird as the city itself. “You’ll Never Interview in This Town Again” is Passons’ hilarious, if sometimes gut-wrenching, account of what it’s like to be plucked, pulled, and pried open by Austinilicone Valley, and what it’s like to come out on the other side.

Why this girl wants to be a tech writer and not work for Conan is beyond me. What anchors the book is that she is brutally honest. She may give the companies where she interviewed hell, but she bestows it equally on herself (i.e. sending a cover letter to "Spreadfast"). There were a few serious, beautiful, melancholy moments too (if you want to read the best piece of writing you'll read all year, skip ahead to her interview with Indeed). Bravo and kudos and I can't wait to read more. She may never get another interview in Austin again, but I suspect she won't need to.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. it was like reading a hilarious version of my own diary. By M. Wheeler If you have been unemployed in Austin recently, you must read this book. This is a hilarious look at the ridiculous state of hiring practices in the tech industry. It was also great therapy reading about how others have faced the same insanity in trying to find a job.

By PiscesDogStar Hilarious yet cringe inducing, Erin paints a tapestry of the day to day frustrations of seeking legitimate work in the "Live Music Capitol of the World". To many who live in this wonderful town, these tales contained herein are familiar to anyone who has hoofed it around, had to take part in telephone screening interviews, met with tech firms and dealt with oddball staff, incompetent HR drones and hiring managers (some who even refuse to hire anyone over the age of 30). While some companies are named outright, others names are withheld. But, with some digging it's pretty easy to figure out who the unnamed companies are. Anybody over the age of 35 who lives in Austin and is currently seeing work, will only benefit from reading and digesting this work. Hope Erin keeps writing more tales of Austin, she has a distinct, truthful, somewhat-merciless style and you really empathize with her throughout the course of the book. Kudos, Erin. Keep it up!
