Breakaway: An Autobiography, by Dan Murphy

About the Author Doctor Daniel John Murphy was born in Alton, Iowa in 1944 and received his M.D. from the University of Iowa. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine as well as the Sergio de Melo Award for his work in Timor-Leste. In 2009, he was presented the Medal of Merit, the country’s highest honor, by former President José Ramos-Horta. His story was also recently featured on Sports Illustrated.

We played basketball on opposing teams in high school. The St. Mary’s team with the Murphy brothers playing always beat our team in my high school years. The gyms they played in, and the teams St. Mary’s faced were the exact situations my team faced. Backboards against the wall so there was no driving the basket, 2 rows of bleachers on the side lines, changing in the 5 grade classroom: all the same. St. Mary’s team learned the fast break and the full court press very well from Mr. Pots, in that they schooled us on those techniques in a game. Our team had never practiced against that kind of play making, so we were befuddled. Dan’s description of small town high school basketball in that era is very precise.Dr. Dan’s father was a very, very respected and well known in that community. I also enjoyed reading about people I knew well mentioned in the book.Dr. Dan is a very good writer, the story moves right along, although he does make a few jumps forward in the story line, that I personally wished were filled in. He stops the story far, far too early. I wish he had added 15 years more. I hope there is another book of this sort in his head, for he is a master story teller.Dr. Dan and I share the same birth year, and as I indicated he was a well-known contemporary of mine. I worked in Flores Island off and on for one island north of East Timor, so am a bit familiar with the culture of the area, and the peoples of the Sunda Islands.On a personal note, it is not often that some one from your youth, writes about his or her life in such detail, that you can lock step your own experiences against his/hers and compare. The events he describes are so familiar to me; Vietnam, Delano Grape Strike, migrant workers, and living foreign for extended periods of time.Dr Dan is obviously a man of integrity, of brutal honestly, and a life to admire. The book is highly recommended.

My review is biased because I have personally known Dr Dan for 50 years. We both grew up in the small rural community Alton, Ia. We became lifelong friends, medical school classmates, roommates, and participated in some episodes during our years growing up, that we now are amazed happened, and we survived. I agree with John DeBeer that the book is well worth reading, especially if you grew up in a small rural community like Alton, IA, and know Dr. Dan, and how he has lived and dedicated his life, to serving the poor and impoverished communities!!

By Mary Fegebank If you like basketball; if you can relate to growing up in a small mid-western town; if you enjoy reading about unique adventures; you will LOVE this book. See how basketball played a part in developing Dan's motivation, drive and integrity. This book is conversational in tone, inspirational and insightful. By the time you finish, you will truly know the man who is "Dr. Dan".

We could all use a little help in the kitchen. If you’re like us, you’re not a trained cook, you’re not a trained housekeeper, and you’re not a trained grocery shopper. We’ve packed this book with every food hack, kitchen tip, and (not-so-common) common sense bit of information we could find from across the internet—only leaving out those we found to be ineffective and/or dangerous. Among them are ways to save time, money, and effort when it comes to preparing and storing food, tackling common kitchen tasks, and more. Excerpts: # 12 # Dairy products can be preserved by freezing them. Write the date of freezing on the container so you’ll know when it’s time to use up the contents: • Milk can be frozen for up to two months. As the milk thaws, the fat will separate a bit, so you’ll want to shake it up before you use it. • Dairy coffee creamer can be frozen for up to six months. • Most cheeses can be frozen for up to two months in a freezer bag, but block cheese can become dry and crumbly. For best results, shred cheese before freezing. Allow the cheese to thaw in the refrigerator before use to better preserve its texture. • Salted butter can be preserved in the freezer for up to six months while unsalted butter can be frozen for just one month. Wrap the butter, still in its original packaging, in plastic wrap and then place the whole thing in a freezer bag for best results. • Not all yogurts are created equal, especially when it comes to freezing. Greek yogurt works best for freezing, lasting up to two months. Let the yogurt thaw and give it a good stir, or enjoy it while still frozen for a special treat. # 54 # Non-stick (PTFE or Teflon) coatings break down under high heat, above 350°C/660°F (though some sources report that breakdown can occur at temperatures between 150°C/300°F and 230°C/450°F)—above these temperatures the PTFE coating begins to dissociate, releasing perfluorooctanoic acid, which can cause polymer fume fever (also known as Teflon flu). To avoid this, use your non-stick pans for medium-heat tasks: light frying, warming side dishes, and sautéing. Also remember to use wood or plastic utensils on non-stick surfaces. Metal utensils will scratch non-stick surfaces, and the scrapings will wind up in your food. # 205 # Want to keep your kids’ lunch cold but hate the hassle of messing with ice packs? Buy yogurt in tube packs and freeze them. Put a frozen yogurt tube in your kid’s lunch each morning. The frozen yogurt will keep the lunch cool, thawing out on its own right around lunchtime.

This is a great little book for people who want to save time By Luann Garis This is a great little book for people who want to save time, money, and food. I don't normally look at these because they popup when I'm looking at something else and always forget to go back (most are a waste of time because I rarely find more than 1 thing that I don't know about or that works), but this book stayed on my mind and I decided to look through it. I was pleasantly surprised to find some that I know work or that I tested and they work really well.I know everything that is included about coconut oil really works because I use it for everything; my friends and family laughed at me at first but now I have them convinced. My father-in-law recommended the lemon juice hack to keep those pesky ants away inside and out years ago and I scoffed at the suggestion, but this really works because we use this treatment every spring and summer and don’t have ants at all. To add to that, the cleaning hacks all work really well too and these were all told to me by my mother-in-law who used several in her cleaning business.I hope all that need a little help, to quote the authors, will take the time and money to look at and use this book. I have some nieces and nephews who are starting out on their own and they are each going to get copies as gifts. I know I will be telling friends and family to make that investment because it does the job.

If you are like me, with limited time to dredge the net because you have your plate stacked way too high with a pile of life and your household computer is in the deathgrip of someone hopelessly addicted to World of Warcraft (what does "Zug Zug"even mean?) you will appreciate having all these helpful tidbits in one place for whenever you need them.

IrAal First off, I am happy to see this book make it fromKickstarter to reality in such a short time! A fun book that highlights some of the Russian "children's poems" that may make you scratch your head but WILL make you laugh! It is a great collection that is artfully illustrated and will certainly not gather dust like so many coffee table books tend to do.#Note: I bought it through Kickstarter and the author was very responsive, informative, and hands-on throughout the process.

Bonashnoz OK, so these are more like Russian expressions than true nursery rhymes, but that said, what an insanely cute/funny book! The illustrations are great, and they are accompanied by English and Russian translations along with phonetic pronunciation for the Russian.This will make a perfect gift for any Russophiles in your life.

And different people comprehend humor in many different ways. This book is a presentation of a very specific sector of a Russian Dark Humor. They called nursery rhymes, because the main characters are children. The humorous effect arrives from two things: 1) It is a play on combination of innocence and craziness/ horror. 2) Little children or nursery like rhyming enhances the humorous effect. They are part of the fun. That is why the author is using transliteration to convey the rhyming and rhythm.Like I said before, this sector of humor is very specific. Yet this book is a gem for humor lovers, who collect samples of humor from around the world. Book has absolutely beautiful and funny illustrations.I liked the book. And I admire the author, who had enough courage to undertake the difficult task of conveying very specific sector of Russian humor to the English speaking audience.

By Edward Easy reading for the most part and every reader will recognize situations that have become all-too-familiar in their personal experiences.It quickly becomes evident that there is no room in Guy's psyche for incompetence, mediocrity, apathy, ignorance, arrogance and a host of other conditions. Laurels are not to rest on, but to build on.How can businesses treat customers like dirt and get away with it? They don't always get away with it and Guy tells what he did about it in folksy, humorous and often colorful language.The offenders run the gamut from Bubba at the repair shop to highly educated professionals who should know better. From small businesses to major corporations to government agencies, the results are often the same; poor customer service.The reader will realize they have a voice and a vote in similar situations. A voice to make phone calls and write letters. A vote to spend your hard-earned money elsewhere.Don't accept the status quo, do something about it!

A perfect book for the individual who’s had enough of Corporate America’s antics to reduce our culture to a mere doormat. The author creatively captures the frustration from so many occasions that should have been pleasant for us the customer. He is not afraid to call names and point fingers. As you read chapter by chapter you will be cheering him on as Guy rips in to the offender and leaves them fully exposed.I wish more of America would read this book and take a stand like the author. We have been beaten down to believe we must expect whatever disservice is handed to us. The truth be told, we are the customer and once we are eliminated, the service these ungrateful moguls provide are no longer needed and they wither and die.It’s a sad situation but Guy’s comic relief turns a dismal situation into a bearable one. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in this.5 stars.
