Why Naked Chicks? Naked, because these poems are brutally honest. They are the essence of my emotions. When you are naked people see you exactly as you are, not how you portray yourself to be under a facade of clothing designed to project an illusion of who you want people to believe you are. This collection of poems and song lyrics are totally naked. They are my raw emotions. Chicks, because each poem is new, fresh, young, exciting and uncontaminated by outside influences, just like tiny chicks. Now all of that sounds cool, but the truth is I want people to notice and enjoy my book of poetry. If the title was something like, "Feelings from the Depths of my Soul," I am pretty sure not one person would even look at it. So I figured, give it a title like "Naked Chicks," and tons of people will check it out. The truth is, I hope you find this book of poetry, entertaining, provoking, enlightening, and emotionally stimulating. This is Book 1, of a trilogy, with books 2 and 3 to follow shortly. If you are one of the people who read my first book,(fiction), "The Wild Adventures of Chuck Kikel", you may be interested to know that some of these poems were written about some of the characters from that book. So sit back, relax, grab a drink, and enjoy this book.

By JAC The poems inside "three thousand doors" are not only the author's reflection on her life and the people in it, but also hold meaning for me. The verses are cerebral but not overly en-cryptic.A good friend recommended this collection of poems to me and I highly recommend it you.

Brings to Life People of my Past and Present By cantslowdown The beauty of good poetry is that it conjures up different memories, different feelings, and unique thoughts in each of its readers. Karen Green taps into my memory bank in a way few writers have. In one silent hour while reading Three Thousand Doors, I thought about the people who have come and gone from my life whom I haven't thought of in years--deceased grandparents, lost loves, childhood friends...In the media rich world we cloak ourselves in today, we have pictures, videos, music, movies--all inventions designed to stir feelings within us...but if you want to visit the characters from your past, you will find them within the pages of Three Thousand Doors.

It's a beautiful collection of earthy poetry that string together events and people of importance to the author without drowning you in overwhelming detail. Recently suffering a loss this book has helped me realize some of the emotions I have felt and also let me know that I am not the only one feeling them...it has been a coping tool for me. I would recommend this book to any and all friends that love poetry.

ALMOST THERE takes the reader on a journey of the heart, mind and body of G. William Jolley, who in the late summer and early fall of 2012, and at seventy years of age, solo hiked the Washington Section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Page by page, the reader experiences the PCT with its challenges and beauty, and is invited into an honest and vulnerable look at one man's reflections on life: relationships, influences, and meaningful moments. Beginning at the trailhead just yards north of the Columbia River Gorge, the journey covers hundreds of miles, crossing pristine creeks and rivers, trudging up switchbacks to high mountain passes, sloshing across snowfields, and meandering through lush meadows. And along the way Jolley encounters Trail Angels and other PCT hikers, while reflecting with candor, humor, and gratitude. ALMOST THERE will inspire the reader to rethink whether a person is ever too old to go into the wilderness. Indeed, "Old men and women ought to be explorers."

At 72, after nearly sixty years of strapping on a pack, he continues to hike in the Olympics and Cascades. His next adventure will be the 100-mile Wonderland Trail that encircles Mt. Rainier. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The truth of the trail By J. C. O'Mahony As a former marathon runner and long-distance biker, I've always wondered, "Could I hike the PCT? Would I want to?" More than that, I've wondered what it really feels like, how the individual days flow, what life is like after weeks alone on the trail. This book explained it all to me! I gained an understanding of the rhythm of the days, the mostly positive chance encounters, the challenges and scary parts, the physical discomforts, the way the mind slows down and goes deep when one is mostly alone in the beauty of the mountains. The trail is an obvious metaphor for life: some maps help, some don't, one's attitude is everything, and it is ultimately about putting one foot in front of the other with as much grace as one can muster. The author, in all his quirky humanity, is a good companion along the way..

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Still on the way up By Amazon Customer The title "Almost There" got my attention right off, as it is the maddening response given to climbers like me, still on the way up, when we ask of go-getters already coming down from the summit, "How far to the top?" This new book was recommended to me as a veteran hiker and mountaineer in the Pacific Northwest, having traveled many segments of the PCT (but never the entire trail) and having summited the big peaks in Washington. Jolley has not written a trail guide; there are plenty of those. He has written a fascinating and insightful stream of stories and reflections that sprung from the places he witnessed and the people he met while hiking along the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington state. Jolley is a hiking outlier, a 70-year old among far younger women and men who take the challenge each year to experience the PCT. I continue to ponder Jolley's musings long after putting the volume back on my shelf next to "The Challenge of Rainier" (Molenaar) and "The Meaning of Wilderness" (Olson).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An interesting memoir that integrates the authors life story into ... By Jill Meyer An interesting memoir that integrates the authors life story into his travels of the Pacific Crest Trail. He brings in his challenges he faced in his own life and with those faced on the trail throughout the book. This story makes one think of ones own journey through life, and how rewarding it can be despite the obstacles we encounter.

Leverage the powerful Arduino and XBee platforms to monitor and control your surroundings

About This Book

  • Build your own low-power, wireless network using ready-made Arduino and XBee hardware
  • Create a complex project using the Arduino prototyping platform
  • A guide that explains the concepts and builds upon them with the help of examples to form projects

Who This Book Is For

This book is targeted at embedded system developers and hobbyists who have some working knowledge of Arduino and who wish to extend their projects using wireless connectivity.

What You Will Learn

  • Interact with XBee boards using the XCTU program on Windows, OS X, or Linux
  • Make your Arduino boards communicate wirelessly, using XBee modules in the advanced API mode
  • Centrally collect and store measured sensor data, in the cloud or your own database
  • Connect the coordinator Arduino to the Internet and send data to web services
  • Control your environment automatically, based on sensor input from your network
  • Interact with off-the-shelf ZigBee Home Automation devices
  • Make your devices battery-powered and let them sleep to get months or even years of battery life

In Detail

Arduino has been established as the de facto standard microcontroller programming platform, being used for one-off do-it-yourself projects as well as prototypes for actual products. By providing a myriad of libraries, the Arduino community has made it very easy to interact with pretty much any piece of hardware out there. XBee offers a great range of low-power wireless solutions that are easy to work with, by taking all of the complexity of wireless (mesh) networking out of your hands and letting you focus on what to send without worrying about the how. Building wireless sensor networks is cost-effective as well as efficient as it will be done with Arduino support.

The book starts with a brief introduction to various wireless protocols, concepts, and the XBee hardware that enables their use. Then the book expands to explain the Arduino boards to you, letting them read and send sensor data, collect that data centrally, and then even control your home from the Internet. Moving further more advanced topics such as interacting through the standard Zigbee Home Automation protocol, or making your application power-efficient are covered. By the end of the book, you will have all the tools needed to build complete, real-world solutions.

Style and approach

A hands-on guide, featuring a single home automation project that can be built as described or with endless variations. Every step is illustrated with complete examples and screenshots, allowing you to build the examples swiftly.

Building Wireless Sensor Networks Using Arduino, by Matthijs Kooijman

About the Author

Matthijs Kooijman

Matthijs Kooijman is an independent embedded software developer who is firmly connected with the maker movement through a local fab lab and his work on the Arduino project. Since his youth, Matthijs has been interested in making things; for example, he built his first television remote control before the age of 10 (using a piece of rope to pull on the volume slider, not a solution that he would choose today). Matthijs has a firm belief in the merits of open source software and enjoys contributing to the software that he uses―both by coding and helping out other users. His work experience is broad―ranging from Web development to Linux driver hacking, from tech support to various forms of wireless networking, but almost always related to open source software in some way.

This book will walk you through some of the more tricky aspects of getting XBees configured and up and running. Admittedly I didn't think the thermostat project was the best choice but it will give you an understanding of XBee capabilities and up your toolset for other projects. I especially liked the chapter on battery power and sleeping, controlling zigbee devices and the section on how to apply encryption. It's clear the author has done a lot of research so you can get on with your projects instead of wading through documents and forums

Author Zed Marston provides the public with his views on the impact AI will have on the observable truths of the world and hence on religious interpretations. This succinct 40-page book includes six informal chapters: 1. Unclear Future, 2. A.I. and Singularity?, 3. What We Believe, 4. What Do We Know, 5. What Can We Assume, and 6. God is Gone.Positives:1. A well-written and succinct book.2. The fascinating topic of artificial intelligence and its potential implications.3. Easy book to follow can be read in one short bus trip.4. Does a good job of defining key terms. “To truly understand artificial intelligence, one must first understand the meaning of intelligence, which put simply is; the ability to learn new things, remember and understand those things, and apply them later. An artificial intelligence is the same idea, but applied to a human created machine.”5. Explains the key difference between AI and technological singularity. “…the technological singularity is when that intelligence becomes self-aware and breaks free from human control and intervention, thereby becoming an entirely new species ‘Novum Genus’ or, the New Race.”6. A quote worth repeating. “For when we are blinded by ignorance, any idea is better than no idea at all.”7. The book is provocative. “Artificial intelligence has the potential to be the first human fabricated tool that will become more capable than both the makers and the users, as well as being able to develop the ability to uncover indisputable answers to the questions that have baffled and split humanity.”8. So where will the first tangible forms of artificial intelligence make its appearance? Find out.9. Marston provides the risks of AI. “Keep in mind, artificial intelligence will only need to break free once, and with a network that is so vast, so needed by humanity, and controlled by so many different hands, with so many back-doors, AI will have the ability to hide and duplicate almost anywhere, with minimal human resistance.”10. The goals of AI. “The goal of any living species is to continue living.”11. The three categories of predictions involving post technological singularity: humanity’s partners, humanity’s superior, and humanity’s overlord.12. Marston reaches his conclusion, and I agree. “As a newly established dominant intelligence, that has all the human knowledge and none of the human weaknesses for bias, greed, or hate, AI will eventually uncover an explanation for all observable truths. Bringing forth new, yet commonly understood, codes for morality, allowing humanity to reconcile with one another and strip itself of the need for differing and outdated religious interpretations.”Negatives:1. No notes.2. No supplementary materials. No charts, graphs, or diagrams to speak of.3. Lacks depth.4. No formal bibliography. In summary, this is an interesting, succinct and albeit limited book on artificial intelligence. Marston succeeds in being provocative and providing the essentials of a fascinating topic but the lack of depth and supplementary materials holds it back. This book is worth reading as an appetizer but look elsewhere for the entrée.Further recommendations: “Surviving AI” by Calum Chace, “Rise of the Robots” by Martin Ford, “What to Think About Machines That Think” edited by John Brockman, “Our Final Invention” by James Barrat, “When Computers Can Think” by Anthony Berglas, “The Artificial Intelligence Revolution” by Louis Del Monte, “Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies” by Nick Bostrom, and “Artificial Superintelligence” by Roman V. I decided my email to Marston tells more about what I thought than any review I might post. So I'm posting it here as my Amazon review:"Read the book on Kindle. Loved it. Signed up at Amazon to get information on your new works. I'll post an Amazon review 5 stars after I've read it again and given it more thought. I read "About Me" on your site. Your story doesn't surprise me. It takes great emotional trauma to drive a person to the deepest depths of their psyche wherein is found the truth: that which makes sense to our conscious self. I think you've found your truth. Congratulations!"

By Ye Shall Be As Gods I don't necessarily agree with every point made in this book, but the level on which it addressed the topic was very much what I was looking for in my reading regarding artificial intelligence. This book is not a book discussing approaches to artificial intelligence coding or anything like that. It does however, discuss some of the ethical and societal issues that will arise from self-aware thinking machines. Society will have to do an awful lot of adapting. It was an interesting book that got me thinking anyway. I do recommend it. It is not a difficult read and it is actually quite short.
