Rhona McAdam's sixth collection of poems, Ex-ville, reflects upon what we leave behind: the people, places and journeys that shape our lives.

We peer through many doorways in this suburb of the imagination. The poet's move back to Canada from her home in England unfolds in a bittersweet series of poems that probe the meaning of departure and arrival.

The ambivalent pleasures of travel in an anxious but beautiful world lead us eloquently astray in many countries, longing "for home in each new bed, / worrying the nests of strangers".

The poles of life from first to second childhoods are explored with deft wisdom and technical skill, whether fingering the keys of failed piano lessons or taking the wheel when old age leads parents into dementia and institutionalization.

There is sadness and wisdom in these poems, as well as joy, love and passion. Ex-ville is a book to welcome and celebrate, and then return to, often.

The poems range from memories of lost times and people gone forever, musings about or directed at past lovers, revisitings of past ironies, and moments of humour (may McAdam never lose her delicious sense of humour) and sorrow. One of my favourites in the collection, “Scatterling,” considers how after living for many years in London, even after a long time back in Canada small specks of her self must still be “caught in hedges” and in the memories of those she met and worked with in the U.K. It is a lovely poem steeped in loss but also in hope, its title a lovely example of McAdam’s gentle humour. McAdam’s poems are accessible and honest. Highly recommend.

By nicole I've been wanting to try learning new languages for awhile now but never seem to have the time When I saw the 7 day description I decided to try this book out and am so glad that I did. It gave me exactly what I wanted, an introduction to the French language without months and months of lessons. I love that there was not only descriptions of why things are pronounced how they are, but also audio to go with the lessons so I can actually hear for myself if I'm getting it right. If there's something I wasn't exactly sure of, or something I wasn't exactly getting right, I was able to go back to the audio tracks to double check myself. And having my Kindle reader on my phone made it so easy to just slip in headphones and read while I was on the bus on the way to work and still be able to have my audio to go with it. If you're going on a trip or just want to try learning French, I would highly recommend this. And the movie and music of the day segments made it super fun to learn a new language! I was definitely not disappointed.

By Cynthia Navarrete I will recommend this book for French learners who want to immerse themselves into the language. I did learn French in my school years, never got the chance to take it further and of course I didn’t remember much about what I learnt in school. This book was helpful for getting back on my feet. I bought this book right before I traveled to France for vacation and what I learnt from this book was useful in my time in France. Without this book I think I would have been somewhat lost. It retaught me the basics of French and it is really useful for travelers when they need the basic vocabulary and pronunciation in daily situations. I would highly recommend it for travelers who are going to a French speaking country and those who are learning French for the first time.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great book to start learning French! By Amazon Customer I never got the opportunity to learn French in high school or college and now that I am a mom, I don't have much time to learn it either. This book allowed me to use snippets of my day to learn and practice French when I get the chance. Having the audio paced throughout the book, instead of as an afterthought, was a great way to understand how to pronounce the words, and practice my pronunciation. I enjoyed having the book on my Kindle app to listen to the audio and read at the same time. It covers a lot of the words you need in everyday conversations as well as how to conjugate most verbs. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has little time during the day to learn another language.

These poems were written between 1997 and 2003. They evoke a strong sense of Scottish history, on the land and at sea, in places ranging from Aberdeen to Cromarty (the main setting, especially for local myths such as Captain Reid’s mermaid and the Sutors) and further north into the Highlands. Although there is a heavy sense of decay, in buildings, machines and people, this is due to the passing of time. Only the landscape remains pure and undefiled.

I have only read a few so far but they are really well crafted and inspirational. If you love poetry and/or Scotland, this is well worth the read (and more than reasonably-priced). 4 stars so far, only because I haven't read them all yet.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Last Day of Freedom is a gripping prequel by RJ Vickers By Tiffany H Allen The Last Day of Freedom hooked me from the beginning. Easy to read with great protagonist character development. I haven't read The Natural Order, but if the prequel's intriguing storyline is any indication of this author's style, it'll be on my list. Tristan is both stubborn and lovable and the loss he suffers is painfully portrayed in a way that makes me want to hug him. Simple yet articulate writing. I look forward to more from R.J. Vickers.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Perfect Complement to The Natural Order By Hillary I'm currently reading R.J. Vickers book, The Natural Order (half-way through), so when I discovered that she had written a prequel, I immediately purchased it. I'm so glad that I did! This short, quick-to-read, compelling back story of how Tristan ended up in juvie provides just the perfect complement to the full-version novel. In the prequel, we are finally granted the opportunity to really understand Tristan's internal story, his thoughts and his beliefs. We learn about the tragic incident that changed his life by living it with him, and with that, we feel with him- for me, exactly what a good book should do. This is what has been missing for me during my reading of The Natural Order. Every page I kept hoping to uncover the whys and hows of Tristan as the protagonist because I want to be sympathetic and like him, but I haven't been able to. Now I can, and I can't wait to go back and start the Natural Order over again with this brilliant bit of new information. The Last Day of Freedom is a must-read, and then should be immediately followed-up with The Natural Order for a total fantastical reading experience. Well-done R.J. Vickers!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Launch to a New Series By iskeen R. J. Vickers writes clearly and well. Her characters are believable and her situation is challenging. Two boys, devoted to each other, are caught in an emergency situation (earthquake) with dire consequences. Bad things happen, and then get worse and worse. R. J. Vickers really knows how to build suspense -- every premonition of trouble is followed by glimmers of hope and then deepening disaster.I especially liked the subtlety of the title, "The Last Day of Freedom." Since the prequel starts with a disaster and the timeframe of the aftermath spans months in various stages of lockup, we are uncertain exactly which day is the last day of freedom. At first, we think the last day is the day of the earthquake, but by the end of the prequel, we are almost sure that the "Last Day of Freedom" is taking place in the final car ride. The Last Day of Freedom: A prequel to The Natural OrderFantastic set up for "The Natural Order," the first book in Vickers' new fantasy series. At the end of "The Last Day of Freedom," we are led to believe that all the disasters have been explained in natural terms. But put that thought aside. Vickers' writes so well, something tells me there's a lot more to this story, and "The Natural Order" will be a natural winner.

By Brenda Telford Even though Bruce was now Karla’s ex-boyfriend, she felt an intense horror as she saw him being clutched in the claws of a dragon that was Taurian’s deadly enemy and flown away, destination unknown. But even while she sought Taurian’s help to rescue Bruce, Karla knew he still wasn’t strong enough to complete this mission. The Mesmer ritual wasn’t complete – he needed her help with that and Karla wasn’t sure she could…I loved Bedding the Dragon by Aussie author Rinelle Grey! A fun, light hearted novella which follows on from Waking the Dragon (#1) and Dressing the Dragon (#2). Set in outback Australia this is a paranormal romance series which I highly recommend.

The Mesmer ritual has to be completed now if they have any hope to rescue Bruce and win what is bound to be a fight to the death. Karla doubts that even with the ritual done, Taruis won't be strong enough....she has it in her head to go after him herself.....Like I said, it's about to get real.

If they were written as one big book, then you'd finish the book and then have to wait for months for the next installment to be released. This way, you get to read a segment of the story and then a couple of months later the next one is released. No time to forget where the last one left off and if you do, it won't take you long to read the previous story. Great characters!

Boost your efficiency with WebStorm By Hugo Before I was satisfied using just few features of Webstorm, but this is a powerful IDE not just a basic test editor, this book start from very beginning downloading and installing, presenting all the interface, how to create projects, add new files and how to do the basic functions. The next chapters show how to use the powerful features of the IDE, this show's me much more that I could imagine, before I use poorly this tool, than the book show how to build Web and Native Hybrid Apps, even if know how to do this, you will find new ways to improve your efficiency using Git or Mercurial for example, it's simple, but before I normally use terminal and import manually. This book show how to automatize your job with package managers inside the IDE, this makes my workflow more professional and they teach you how to use the tools to debug and test your projects, to achieve the best quality in your projects.Nowadays these technologies are everywhere, with HTML, CSS and JavaScript you can build games, websites, webapps and hybrid-apps. When I decided to start using WebStorm, my focus are Web and Mobile, there is a bunch of tools that you can use, I like in special Cocos2d-js, Cordova/PhoneGap, Ionic and Phaser.I liked that this book shows the power in every aspect of the IDE, independent of your project or your focus, you will find more ways to do, if you don't know some technologies, I'm very beginner in Web applications in general, you will find the ways to start in the right way, this help you have a basic notion and how to make every work more productive, the way presented is fluid so if you practice you can improve your job more and more. I recommend this book for everyone who work with this IDE or are searching for an IDE to do basically every kind of application.

Definitively reccommended for all Webstorm users By Amazon Customer Short version: buy it, it is worth it.I am working with Webstorm for quite some time now and regard it as the best existing production environment for web projects. So I'm very content with the many features Webstorm offers. However, I seem not to be able to keep up with the speed of improvement of this complex IDE (current version is 11). Mostl of the time I use only the few familiar features I'm accustomed to and don't have the time to look any further. Therefore I was a bit excited to see that a book covering Webstorm was published by Packt and ordered it immediately. Packt is very very good at covering niche themes that other publishers don't touch, though not all of their books are well-founded (okay, most of them are). This is one of the good ones."Webstorm Essentials" covers Webstorm 10 which means it is quite current (Version 11 is out for two months only). With about 180 pages it is not cluttered but written to point. Of course the basics are explained which already is inspiring to try out approaches different from those I am used to. More important are the chapters where Stefan Rosca and Den Patin (to give due credit to the authors here) describe good practices for project setups of, say, React, Angular or Meteor projects. I don't do all of these currently but like to get an overview about it for later. It is true that I could have most of these information online for free (on www.jetbrains.com or elsewhere) but I enjoy to have a book handy to browse and read "offline" without having to stare at a screen. Well done. I give it five stars!

WebStorm (almost) perfect how-to By Fred Usually, I am not fond of IDE books, since they pretty much end up by listing every single keyboard shortcuts of the IDE. Here the author made a a lot of effort to show you how WebStorm can help you tackle your project faster, far from being a reference book you usually don't need. From starting a new AngularJS project, to live-debugging your Bootstrap application, your not only will know all the marvels you can do with WebStorm, but also how to do them quickly. The only reason I do not give this book a 5 stars is because the "Developing your web Application" chapter is way to long and dives way too deep into front code (JavaScript, HTML, CSS, etc.), rather than just staying at the WebStorm / IDE level. Now, to be honest, this is minor since you can easily skip part of this chapter. Overall, should you need to learn more about WebStorm or need to bootstrap your WebStorm project, this book is spot on.
