Twenty-eight year old Maggie McDonald is a self-proclaimed singleton. She came close to tying the knot once but bailed out on her own wedding when she realized that she didn’t want to do anyone else’s laundry or account for where the money in the checkbook goes. Maggie witnessed first hand the heartache that both her mom and Uncle Hor (which is short for Horatio and not indicative of a certain character trait) endured and has no desire to suffer the same fate. But a serendipitous turn of events just may alter Maggie’s fate after all. A prolific reader and Scrabble player, Maggie has always seemed to possess the gift of words. She hones her skills daily as an obit writer for The Boston Hub and is accustomed to the response her words elicit, but when Maggie gives a toast at her best friend’s wedding, she is not prepared for the proposition she receives from Morty Finklestein, a newly engaged senior citizen and Elk member extraordinaire. The proposal: one thousand dollars to give a toast at the couple’s wedding in Florida. The catch: Maggie must stay with the couple for a week, observing their relationship in order to give a heartfelt and personal speech. Spending a week at a retirement home in Florida isn’t exactly the vacation that Maggie has in mind, but, as Maggie finds out, things don’t always turn out as she plans. After obtaining a few “toasting gigs” through coincidence and highly questionable circumstances, Maggie soon catapults to semi-celebrity status. With a profile in People magazine and a shout-out on Perez Hilton’s website, Maggie becomes the quintessential “it” girl: the highly sought after (and expensive) wedding accessory for the rich and (somewhat) famous. When Samantha Chase, the stuck-up daughter of a well-known vineyard owner in Napa Valley, hires Maggie to toast her wedding, Maggie thinks she has been hired for another typical wedding by one of her typical clients, except this time the experience is anything but typical. Samantha Chase’s fiancée is none other than her own ex-fiancée, Jack. Now it seems as if it is Maggie who will be stiffed at the alter, although, quite to her surprise, Maggie finds that her feelings about love, marriage, and especially Jack, have changed. Told with humor and wit, The Wedding Toaster chronicles the journey of one woman’s transformation from a lovelorn cynic to a hopeless romantic. From a retirement home in Florida to a trailer park in Tennessee to a dude ranch in Wyoming, Maggie celebrates the unique love stories of a cast of quirky characters and finds out, along the way, that love just may be worth it after all.

With nowhere left to run—where will you go? Most of the world’s population is either dead or dying from a virus that looks a lot like the one Bree and Nate tried to destroy—and not all of them remain dead. Chased by hordes of zombies, they flee the city with what remains of their merry band of miscreants. But even when most of them survive the first day, they are far from safe—because there is no safe place left. The fight for survival forces them to become resourceful, and soon they realize that the undead might not be their only problem. In this new world, it’s each man or woman out for themselves—and just because someone has a pulse doesn’t necessarily mean they make a good ally. Yet there is hope—a bunker in Wyoming, outfitted with weapons and food, and above all else, defensible shelter for the winter. Can they survive the two-thousand-miles trip across the country with nothing but the clothes on their back and what they can scavenge along they way? This is not the kind of challenge that Bree ever imagined she would have to face, but she’s determined to survive—even if that means to learn how to on the job. Books in the series (so far): #1: Incubation #2: Outbreak #3: Escalation #4: Extinction

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You almost lost me with that pointless punishment scene... By Rawrr Bree becomes a budding soldier as she and the gang begin a grueling trek to Wyoming amid the zombie apocalypse. Along the way they pick up a fun character to hate, kill lots of zombies, and dodge the usual sickos that tend to emerge in bad times. This book reads more like a typical post-apocalyptic zombie book than the first book (which i liked) with all the usual pitfalls but the author still managed to keep it interesting. Some of the other characters actually gain names and personalities so the characterization is slightly better but Nate is still too unemotional and flat at times (like to the point where he seems very one dimensional). I get that he's supposed to be the tough love kind of guy and he doesn't want to "sugar coat" things for Bree but sometimes he just comes across as way too egotistical and condescending and I can't help but despise Bree for liking him and letting him treat her the way he does (she always just accepts his criticism as fact and he's ALWAYS right according to her). There WERE some good moments in there where Nate managed to show another side and had a little more dimension but as it is, it never lasts and most of the time he just comes off as a smug a-hole, which i find really off-putting (in fact, I've been trying to read the 3rd book but it seems like he's become even more egotistical and condescending in that one). I always get the feeling he wouldn't care much if Bree died. And can i just say wtf is up with the way everyone made fun of Bree for having a period? Seriously? These people are supposed to be over 30! Usually by the age of at least 25 a guy no longer snickers or freaks out about crap like this (usually by then they've had a girlfriend or you know, become familiar enough with females to realize periods happen). And okay, major SPOILER alert here but i have to say, I was really put off by the whole beating scene... It seemed like it came out of nowhere (i mean i get why but didn't find it believable), was pretty out of character, and didn't really make sense. This isn't Outlander and Bree didn't go running off in an attempted escape; she made a mistake that turned into a cluster**** but she took full responsibility afterwards (bad enough she lost her dignity while doing it). Of course then she does a complete 180 and is all "hey guys, it's no big deal cause no one died, right?" which is TOTALLY out of character for her (she's not that clueless) but i guess the author really wanted to write in this scene. Having everyone beat her in a bizarre hazing ritual was just OTT and ridiculous. A total waste of resources, too. It serves no purpose to beat your team members when you're living in 3rd world conditions with no access to proper medical care (all it would take is a spleen rupture and she'd bleed out internally). And then afterwards we have Nate admitting that he knows she'd just do it all over again anyways? I think the worst part about all of this is that Bree seems to agree and accept that she deserved to get beaten! For trying to do what she believed (and apparently still believes) was right at the time. Ugh.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great read! By janosch73 I was very happy when book two in the Green Fields series was published so quickly after the first one as I couldn't wait to get on with the story and to find out what had caused the apocalypse. I liked the character development of Bree a great deal; how she is able to justice her place in the group of soldiers as a former labrat and how she is treated just like one of the guys. She faces even some of the funny realilties of the life after the apocalypse that still show how she's a human being and a woman! Those moments and the more courageous, snappy bickering with the guys created some great, funny moments in the book. In addition to the fun there were some action-packed events and the long, long walk ahead to possible safety. Some successes to Bree and some failures as well which show that her character development is not complete yet.In book 2 we get some questions from book 1 answered, or do we? I don't want to write any spoilers here, but I do believe that Adrienne has not told us the entire truth of the story in this book. There are more revelations to come for sure and I can't to read more. I already have my favourite guys in the story, I can't figure out why Nate is so special or what his backstory is really? And the ultimate question, are they really going to make it, which is still completely open. I bet that book 3 doesn't give me the answer to the ultimate question either, but more adventures and challenges for this great bunch of survivors whose journey I want to follow to the end.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read it! By Kindle Customer I really like what's going on in this book. It's nuts but interesting. Problem hi's when the dialog between characters starts. Makes absolutely no sense what is coming out of their mouths. And there is a lot of aggression that makes little sense as well. The inner monologue of the main character Bree is really good--exceptionally good--- but then when she actually speaks...s***e ensues. But she's not the only one. Everyone is just really snotty for no reason. And the Nate busts out in this log sermons that is...well, I have no clue...but it's worth reading, no doubt.

The poems of ancient Tamil are one of India's most important contributions to world literature. Presented here in English translation is a selection of roughly three hundred poems from five of the earliest poetic anthologies of classical Tamil literature. These lyrical poems are intimately related to the agricultural society that produced them, and their direct connection with the earth as well as their use of ornament and suggestion give them a quality unlike that of any other poetic tradition.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Essence of Tamil Yoga By Jai The author, an authority in Tamil religious traditions, presents a long introductory essay plus translations of 4 South Indian Saivite poets. The essay is organized into 6 topics: Medicine, Alchemy, Yoga, the Siddhis, Religion, and Society, followed by selective translations of the poets' works. The phrase, "poets of the powers," refers to the yogic siddhis that these saints manifested. That they are not better known to the West is due to prejudice by orthodox Brahmin Hindus: these Tamils were never "Sanskritized" (that is, domesticated, sanitized and incorporated into the religico-political agenda of 20th century Hinduism)--as we might also say of the prehistorically ancient Tantric traditions. Yet their gnowledge of yoga is profound and deep. For example, Tirumular--who knew Patanjali--discusses the inner alchemical significance of the 5-fold mantra, "Om Nama Shivaya," Praise be Lord Shiva. That alone makes this work significant for anyone interested in the primordial yoga/tantra traditions of ancient India. Its importance is underscored by the fact that there are so few works on Tamil Yoga (other examples being Younger's scholarly "Home of Dancing Sivan, Govindam's fabled "Babaji and the 18 Kriya Yoga Traditions," the same groups' recent publication on Boganath, and a related book by Dr. Zvelebir, our present author). This book is priceless for anyone interested in Tamil yoga/alchemy, Saiva Siddhanta, and the pre-Hindu religious traditions of Tamil Nadu.

The Web is slowly but surely changing from a model in which a human reader browses content on web pages to a model in which services and clients (not necessarily humans) exchange information. And because of this, author Silvia Puglisi explains, it makes more sense to build platforms instead of just products or applications. Platforms are like ecosystems interconnecting different applications, services, users, developers, and partners, and offer many benefits.

In this book, you'll learn how to design and develop Representational State Transfer (REST) platforms in Rails. You'll begin with an introduction to Ruby on Rails, and then move quickly through new concepts. At the end of each chapter, you'll have learned something new about building and organically extending a multi-service platform spanning different devices—and will have had some fun in the process. By the end of the book you'll know how to build an architecture composed of different services accessing shared resources through a set of collaborating APIs and applications.

  • Explore the basics of REST and HTTP, including REST architecture and the role of hypermedia

Solid Coverage, but Too Many Mistakes By Nathan D I purchased the ebook for this and it is almost unusable without keeping the errata handy, reading the open issues on GitHub, and Googling. I am not sure if the print version is different. For example,On page 46, it has you edit a migrations file and has this line:create_table :categories, {:id = & gt; false} do |t|It should read:create_table :categories, {:id => false} do |t|, but the book formatting has replaced all "=>" with "= & gt;". How was this missed? This happens constantly throughout the book. Then it has you add a "respond_to :json" at the top of the first controller you edit, which doesn't work in Rails 4.2 without the "responders" gem. Not a huge deal as it does specify Rails 4.1 in the Gemfile, but this book was just released and you'd think it would work for a version of Rails that has been out a YEAR AFTER the release of this book.On page 50 it has use you add attributes to the generated CategorySerializer to show which attributes to include in the JSON response. It clearly says to "specify the attributes cat_title and cat_subcats", but then the following code just makes up attribute names that result in an error:class CategorySerializer < ActiveModel::Serializer attributes :title, :sub_categoriesendFinally, when you figure all of that out, it has you use curl to test the JSON response. It says the curl response should be:{"category":{"cat_title":"SCIENCE","cat_subcats":34}}But, after you figure out all of the problems from above (if you even do), you actually get a JSON response showing EVERY attribute. It turns out (after an hour of reading through the Errata and Github page), that even though the author had you generate the application using "rails-api new" instead of "rails new", the ApplicationController (which is never mentioned) inherits from ActionController::API (when using rails-api new), but the author's code actually inherits from ActionController::Base (showing that she generated the code via rails new which is NOT what was used in the book). Changing to ActionController::Base results in the correct JSON being returned.I really want to like this book as I am very interested in the topic, but having mistakes in almost every single piece of sample code makes you go crazy! I will gladly change my review if the ebook is updated to reflect the plethora of mistakes I have found so far.The material looks solid, but I would only recommend buying if you are willing to figure out all of the sample code. Here is a link to the (currently unconfirmed) errata: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/errataunconfirmed.csp?isbn=0636920034469

Example Code Errors Ruin the Ride By El Juncal Chock full of code errors that prevent the example code from running ... resulting in a huge waste of time. As a previous reviewer has stated, you must keep stack overflow, google and the errata list handy at all times when creating the examples ... I expected MUCH BETTER from this publisher.

Broad coverage of topics focused to Rails. It starts with the basics of restful, ruby on rails quick tutorial, designing API's in RoR, testing, deploying API, integrating into openweathermap.org, and lots of code examples and pictorial diagrams to help understand why things are done the way they are. It closes with a strong chapter on privacy and security. Fairly quick read if you skip a lot of the code examples and use code examples later for a reference.
