This generous collection of the poems of William Conelly is all the more welcome for being long overdue. Here is a poet who finds extraordinary dimensions in ordinary experience, as in “Treasure” and “The Ford Birthday Ode,” two memorable moments of childhood; as in “Aubade,” “The Sailor,” “Memento,” and “In the Ninth Month”-this last from the point of view of a woman about to give birth. Midwestern by birth, William Conelly has lived on both US coasts, as well as in England and the Middle East. He is smart and imaginative, and brings a thriving intelligence to life’s experiences. I found the poems in Uncontested Grounds original, diverse, and lucid. Many are poems of place. The first of these features a bankrupt farmer who ponders the “blue, remorseless beauty” that first lured him onto the stricken acreage he must sell. But the places vary, and some exude enchantment. I am taken by the touch of a drowsy wife’s feet in “Aubade,” and the couple along Florida’s “Gulf Coast” pitying “those who’ll wake alone.” Conelly writes so well, in a variety of forms, I initially absorbed his insights heedless of their traditional underpinnings. These poems easily bear rereading then; they compose a fine selection from one of our best writers. -William J. Smith

William Conelly followed his father into the military. He later reconsidered, resigned, and took a Master’s Degree under the distinguished American poet Edgar Bowers. After stints in transport and financial services, sales and commercial writing, Conelly returned to the academy in 2000 where, by turns, he has served as an associate professor, a tutor and an instructor of creative writing. His poetry has been published in Iota, The Lyric, Measure, Pebble Lake Review, Pleiades, Poetry Durham, Poetry Porch and elsewhere. He is a dual citizen of the US and the UK and maintains a permanent residence in the West Midlands town of Warwick. He is married with three grown sons. Uncontested Grounds was a finalist for the 2013 Able Muse Book Award.

The military themes that recur throughout the book seem particularly poignant - illuminating lives of soldiers past and present with equal force. I love this book.

This is truly a wonderful collection of poems. William Conelly uses form so subtly that a poem never remains simply an exercise in form as it often happens with lesser poets.His form exists to bring forth the feeling and the thought, to make the thought reflect the feeling and vice versa, while the reader experiences not merely the thought or the feeling, and not even the thought combined with the feeling, but the beauty of his finely wrought language. His poems are experiences; something to live for and to live through. You will not be the same after you read lines such as these:"Grief is innocence, observing shadows/westering from fields and friends, as rivenstrains of music play. Time is not kept.Some final pliancy, at heart, conveysthe soul we were, or are, or will yet be."(f"The Newly Dead")Or these:"My days are only where I've been,that and my guttering desireto rise and maunder off again,the witness of celestial fireanother, and another day,till all I am is what I say."(from "Sadhu")Or this ("In Paris, the Antagonist"):"Our Lady's gargoyle--teeth clamped on a gutter spout,ram horns oblique above stone eyesall of history's hollowed out--that's the devil you know;the flesh and vacantly familiarwhom you bypass in a crosswalk,ten centuries below,the devil you don't."I'm very glad there is a poet like William Conelly working in the English language. I’ve been reading them over and over for a month without tiring. Some of these poems are worth the price of the book by themselves, like “Intuition,” which seems to me to be one of the finest examples of dramatic irony since Robert Browning; “Separates,” about the dynamics of a long term relationship; and “Sea Change.” Subjects and settings? The relationships of men and women, the poet’s unresolved relationship with his father, what can be learned from opening your mind at the shore, late-in-life premonitions about mortality, and various interstices, such as between sea and sky, or shore and sea, most wonderfully those rich and bewildering moments between sleeping and waking. Some of the poems are like short stories, brief narratives or vignettes about men and women doing either ordinary tasks (swimming, taking photographs, waiting at airport gates) or singular tasks (preparing to die or give birth, piloting an air strike). William Conelly will especially appeal to readers who enjoy graceful modern takes on formalism rather than first-draft demotic free verse, who prefer rich ambiguity rather than simplistic declamations, and who are more interested in universal experiences than in a stranger’s self-indulgent diary entries. The poems suggest that William Conelly is modest, perhaps even reticent, observant, wry, honest with himself and with his reader, well traveled, and perceptive. In short, a good companion. Yesterday I spent more on a haircut than this book costs. If you have to choose one, skip the haircut.
