2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Simple, Maybe Simplistic? By Oscar Trent This biography is brief, easy to read, written for the young, and does not get sidetracked from the story. I love the story of John Hus and would recommend that any Christian learn it—however, here is why this book lost two stars:1. Dallmann glosses over some historical issues which are important to the story of Hus' death. Most obviously, the legend of "the goose and the swan" prophecy at Hus' execution is firmly in the realm of legend. (See Location 349.) The earliest retellings of it are from Luther himself and Foxe's Book of Martyrs (both over a century later!), while one story which popularized this account, "Hus the Heretic", has been shown to be a shameful hoax. The first-hand accounts of Hus' death do not include this story.2. This account is obviously pro-Protestant—"the life of a martyr"—which I am fine with, but it paints several characters with a broad brush as a result. I understand that, for instance, the Pope (or antipope) John XXIII was by all accounts an evil man. But Chapter X begins "King Sigismund and Pope John XXIII, the two vilest men then living on the face of the earth..." (Location 149) This seems over the top to me, even for a fly-by biography such as this one. Again, such insults smell of sectarianism.Having just finished the 400-page Hus biography by Victor Budgen, I wanted to be able to recommend a different biography to my friends. And I will, with the two caveats that I mentioned above.

It is a brief picture of a man I never knew much about, but now want to learn more. I did not know he was a contemporary of John Wycliff and was strongly influenced by his writings. He was a rare breed in his day as men like him are today. Few would dare to speak out against the corrupt clergy when the price may be death. Trusting in his God, this man not only spoke out and exposed the vileness of those pretending to be God's men, but he went to be executed by fire for his beliefs. Few today would stand up to the corruptness permeating many religious leaders in all denominations today. Not that there are not true men of God, but like John Hus, there are few who are of this caliber.

I think this work would make up a decent biography written for a High School class. On Kindle this work is free. If one needs an introductory to John Hus and his martyrdom for his refusal to be obedient to the Roman Catholic Church. Matthew Spinka like other thorough biography gives a more comprehensive presentation of John Wycliffe thoughts and John Hus. One should read this work as a sort of primer that gives a broad sketch about John Hus' ministry. One will get an elementary understanding John Wycliffe's thought on the Lord's Table, some understanding that Hus defense on Wycliffe's argument, along with the Historical time line, Hus ministry, Roman Catholic persecution, safe conduct promise, trial and martyrdom. One will not come away with the ideas of Wycliffe were not in total agreement with Hus. Hus would not bow to the Roman authority. Wycliffe was critical of economic dominion over its less privilege members. The thoughts of these two men and the interaction of these dealt cannot be dealt with much significance in such a short work.
